Great Travel Reset: Poll: 41% of French population favors restricting EVERYONE to ONLY 4 airplane flights in their ENTIRE LIFE to ‘fight against global warming’

From CLIMATE DEPOT

Consumer Science & Analytics (CSA): (Via Google translate) Engineer Jean-Marc Jancovici, an expert on climate change, once again called for drastically limiting plane travel, and declared the need to establish a quota of 4 flights per person in a lifetime…

HERE and the CSA Institute have just carried out a survey among the French on a possible restriction of the use of airplanes to fight against global warming and to anticipate the depletion of resources. Questioned by the CSA institute, 64% of French people aged 18 and over say they are in favor of reducing their use of airplanes in the medium term for environmental reasons.

Philippine van TICHELEN, General Director of HERE. “These figures show a very clear majority in favor of a reduction in the use of the plane. Ecological awareness is obvious in a context where natural disasters worsened by global warming (extreme heatwaves, fires, etc.) themselves have repercussions on the vacation plans of the French in Greece and Italy in the very short term.”We once again find a higher score among those under 35 (48%)…and this rises to 59% of 18-24 year olds.

This study was conducted by the CSA Institute and carried out online, on July 18, 2023, with a representative sample of 1,010 French people aged 18 and over, constituted using the quota method.

HERE study: The French and the proposal for a quota of 4 flights per person in a lifetime

A CSA & HERE study

41% OF FRENCH IN FAVOR OF THE PROPOSAL OF A QUOTA OF 4 FLIGHTS PER PERSON IN A LIFETIME, ADVANCED BY ENGINEER JEAN-MARC JANCOVICI

On May 30, engineer Jean-Marc Jancovici, an expert on climate change, once again called for drastically limiting plane travel, and declared the need to establish a quota of 4 flights per person in a lifetime. Numerous reactions followed, for and against this proposal.

While the carbon footprint of the aviation sector is regularly singled out in the fight against global warming, and the reduction in the use of aircraft is often cited as one of the measures having the greatest impact on on an individual scale, HERE and the CSA Institute wanted to take stock of the French’s relationship with airplanes. They have just carried out a survey among the French on a possible restriction of the use of airplanes to fight against global warming and to anticipate the depletion of resources.

A majority of French people ready to reduce their use of planes

Questioned by the CSA institute, 64% of French people aged 18 and over say they are in favor of reducing their use of airplanes in the medium term for environmental reasons (including 40% completely in favor). This share peaks at 72% if we focus on those under 35, and at 77% of French people taking a plane (17% of French people surveyed do not take a plane).

“  We are certainly declarative, these intentions must pass the test of facts declares Philippine van TICHELEN, General Director of HERE . But these figures show a very clear majority in favor of a reduction in the use of the plane. Ecological awareness is obvious, in a context where natural disasters worsened by global warming (extreme heatwaves, fires, etc.) themselves have repercussions on the vacation plans of the French in Greece and Italy in the very short term… Added to this is also the impact of inflation and the increase in the cost of air travel, which in the medium term is directing the French towards other modes of transport for their travel.  »

In this sense, the proposal by engineer Jean-Marc JANCOVICI to limit each person to 4 plane journeys over a lifetime is rather well received since 41% of French people say they are in favor.
We once again find a higher score among those under 35 (48%).
“While the 18-35 year old period is often a period conducive to discoveries, to first initiatory journeys, this age group turns out to be the quickest to engage in a very reasoned use of the plane: close to the half of them are in favor of JM Jancovici’s proposal, and this rises to 59% of 18-24 year olds , specifies Philippine van TICHELEN. »

Conversely, Ile-de-France residents are less favourable: only 33% (and 43% would not be at all favourable). “A surprising figure, which could be explained by the fact that Ile-de-France residents are more often required to take the plane for their professional trips, and therefore that the remaining share for their personal trips on the quota of 4 flights per life per person would be even more reduced, argues Philippine van TICHELEN. »

The top 4 destinations in case of air flight quotas

If this measure were adopted, the French would mainly turn to 4 countries on 3 different continents: the United States (31%), Canada (14%), Japan (13%) and Australia (11%).

In terms of organization, travelers would spread their 4 flights over a fairly concentrated period of around 5 years for 24% of them, 40% over a period of 10/15 years , and 28% over a period of 20/ 30 years. Logically, those aged 65 and over would organize their flights in a more concentrated manner over 5 years (41%).

This study was conducted by the CSA Institute and carried out online, on July 18, 2023, with a representative sample of 1,010 French people aged 18 and over, constituted using the quota method.

The text of the article says the French people favor reducing their use of airplanes. It does not say they agreed with 4 per lifetime. What was the exact wording of the poll?

64% of French people aged 18 and over say they are in favor of reducing their use of airplanes in the medium term for environmental reasons”

Yuh, let’s see if they do what they say.

Meanwhile, 4 of my wife’s relatives stopped by. They started whining about the climate. I expressed the fact that I’m now a climate skeptic- not that I think it’s absolutely wrong- but that “the science” doesn’t yet have all the answers. Then, they ganged up on me- implying only a total moron would be a climate skeptic. After they verbally assaulted me, I kicked them out of the house. I wouldn’t have minded if they simply said they believe in “the emergency” but ganging up on this hot tempered Italian is going to far. First time I’ve ever been confronted like that, in person, in my home! Crazy, crazy, crazy climatistas.

Oh, and they expressed great love for Greta Thunberg! “She’s helping to save the planet”.

As long as there are no exceptions for the elite and ruling class. No buying spare flights from the poor.
1st class/luxury flights should be banned. Politicians and especially Climate Scientists should set an example by limiting themselves to 2 flights per lifetime.

So 41% of the French population are totally-ignorant of the facts about so-called global warming. Surely so many cannot believe the Green nonsense about carbon dioxide?

Especially when France is one of the few countries in the world where electricity is 3/4 nuclear.
So much for CO2, but they still insist in believing the propaganda.

EVERYWHERE some sort of newspeak dictionary has popped up.

I’m not a statistician but having read a fair bit of Kahneman and Tverskey, to me all I see is a glaring violation of the ‘law of small numbers’. A random sample of just on 1000 is inherently misleading per se. So they apply a method prone to selection bias instead? Hmm, this from a self styled climate expert? My initial thought was it’s cobblers and the more I read merely confirmed that.

In climate science, any method that yields the correct answer, is by definition a legitimate method.

If 48% believe that air travel should be limited to 4 trips per lifetime, what is stopping them from acting on their beliefs?

Perhaps the real answer is that 48% believe that other people should be limited to 4 trips per life time. Like John Kerry, their time and mission is too valuable to be restricted to 4 trips per lifetime.

a quota of 4 flights per person in a lifetime…
John Kerry, Bill Gates, Leonardo DiCaprio will soon use up that allocation. Or do they get exemptions for being very important people who need to travel around the world attending climate conferences?
And how will the French Rugby team get to play abroad?
And no more flights for you M. Macron after you’ve had your four.
64% of French people aged 18 and over say they are in favor of reducing their use of airplanes in the medium term for environmental reasons.
I wonder how many of them will actually do it. Simple way of finding out: if French airports become less busy we’ll know they mean what they are reported to say.

Surely a bullshit poll!

Only a national referendum, where every citizen can vote, is truly indicative of a nations mood – a snapshot, often biased poll will always give the result the pollsters and involved parties want

So, John Kerry really is French?

Speaking of which, I’d support enjoy making some very harsh examples out of the biggest hypocrites. Kerry, Gore, Greta (especially because of her virtue signaling stunts) and actual world leaders backing climate hysteria all at the top of the list.

This is beyond absurd. If they want to limit their travel, go right ahead, but they need to stop trying to monitor and restrict other people’s behavior.

How many in the poll were government railway employees and their family members?

October 2, 2023 8:31 am

64% of French people aged 18 and over say they are in favor of reducing their use of airplanes

So reduce your use of airplanes.

It’s amazing to me how many people think something should be done, but don’t choose to do it unless it’s mandated by law.

Also, does anyone realistically believe that there won’t be all sorts of exceptions for government officials and the “elites”? Also, it wouldn’t surprise me they work in some sort of “flight offset” system.

The late French President Charles de Gaulle once remarked “Les Francais sont des veaux”, translated as “French people are like calves” (implying that they follow the herd to the slaughter).

In their defense, France does have an excellent network of high-speed trains, that enable a French person to travel between major cities in France in two to four hours, where a plane doesn’t save much time. There is also a good train network to neighboring countries such as Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

Train travel isn’t as practical in a larger country such as the United States, where cities can be thousands, instead of hundreds of miles apart.

Also, contrary to our genius president who takes credit for building a railroad across the Indian Ocean, trains don’t swim very well. Europeans who want to travel to the Americas will either have to use one of their four lifetime plane trips, or else sail like the 16th century explorers and Greta Thunberg. The history books tend to omit the sailing ships that ended up on the bottom of the ocean, with one Titanic exception.

October 2, 2023 10:35 am

So, if my wife and I were to fly from the US to Paris (1 flight each), then to Bordeaux (an additional flight each), and return, we’d use up our entire quota?

Can we establish an exchange, by which folks with no intent to ever fly can sell their quota allotments to other folks to use?

October 2, 2023 11:04 am

Such polls are essentially meaningless. Why? At least three reasons would skew the results:

  1. A large fraction of respondents, especially in a country such as France, have never flown and don’t intend to fly. So it is easy for them to say flying should be limited.
  2. France is comparatively small (80% the size of Texas) and roughly square, so travel is easy by rail, bus or auto.
  3. Class envy.

Responses would have little or no connection to people’s stance on climate change.
