Germany’s radical, fear-porn health minister, Karl Lauterbach, has once again stirred controversy with another of his wild doomsday exaggerations.
Italian minister of tourism unamused
Nius.de here reports how Italy is “angry with the German health minister” who has been spending his summer vacation in the Italian Tuscany. Since the end of Corona and the start of summer, Lauterbach has made extreme heat Germany’s number one health issue and has been busily hyping Europe’s regular summer heat as some sort of threat to humanity.
“No future”
On his most recent escapade, Lauterbach tweeted of the once popular summer holiday destinations of Italy: “Arrived in Bologna Italy today, now it’s off to Tuscany. The heat wave is spectacular here. If things continue like this, these holiday destinations will have no future in the long term. Climate change is destroying southern Europe. An era is coming to an end.”

Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè took issue with Lauterbach’s outlandish tweet: “In any case, we are sure that Germans will appreciate Italian holidays more and more,” adding: “I thank the German Health Minister for choosing Italy as a destination, which has always been the preferred holiday destination of his compatriots. And of course we look forward to welcoming him again in the future.”
Lauterbach not using “objective data”
Giuseppe Ciminnisi, president of the Fiavet tourism association, accused Mr. Lauterbach of misrepresenting the weather and climate data, telling Germany’s FAZ he should analyze the issue “on the basis of objective data in order to substantiate his opinion.”
It turns out that Italian hot weather is exactly what warm weather deprived Germans are looking for. Nius.de comments: “According to Ciminnisi, Italy is ‘overcrowded’ with tourists this year. According to forecasts by the polling company ‘Demoskopika’, 68 million tourists are expected in Italy this summer, more than 35 million of them from abroad – that would be a new record.”
Bologna summer temperature is normal
German energy expert Prof Fritz Vahrenholt reacted to Lauterbach’s claims in the German talk round panel “stimmt”: “That’s really terrible because we know that on the day he landed there, it was basically 30°C and the week that followed it didn’t get over 31°C. That, by the way, is usual in Bologna. In July in Bologna the average high temperature over the last 30 years has been 32°C. That means instead he could have said that we are seeing pleasant temperatures, not quite as hot as usual. But, he has to spread fear among the people.”
The heat crisis seems to be solely in Karl Lauterbach’s mind. Vahrenholt added that currently 15 million Germans are now headed to southern Europe for their summer holidays this year.
Lauterbach is among them. Can 15 million Germans be wrong about that?

Ah, the jet stream (entirely natural) is causing climate change? Now that is a new idea worth following up! Not man made then?

The irony is climate alarmists can only see the heat, not the source of it, sunshine. You don’t get one without the other. This is a pattern with them. NASEM puts on whole seminars talking about the heat and not the light that supplies it.
On TV, on Accuweather for instance, it’s all about the heat all day, not about the light, the UVI.
When the UV Index is high to extreme, expect it to get hotter, especially when it lasts for weeks. It happened in the SW US again this summer as the UV index was in the extreme for weeks. It happened in 2020/21, which I think killed a lot of people in the US and elsewhere.
During the CV19 event, from studying the data, I recognized the potential for many heat deaths as likely mistaken for CV19 deaths, so heat is a legitimate concern, but I don’t agree with broad heavy-handed rules health officials put forward, as they are unnecessary for >95% of people.
In 2020/21 the strong sunshine was from lack of clouds due to the building La Niña.
In my one of my two AGU posters from 2020/21 on these subjects, I talked about the 2003 European heat wave that killed ten’s of thousands, and how that was a consequence of strong sunshine, also related to a time of high solar irradiance, such as we have experienced this year.
While I can appreciate warnings and advisories, it is not the place of anyone to lockdown all of society over health risks that are not equally shared by everyone. There are vulnerable populations that should heed such warnings, but these warnings just don’t apply to everyone.
While these conditions are real with potentially bad outcomes, there is no need to panic.
While these real risks deserve respect, the over-reaction to them by governments does not.

Karl Lauterbach should respect decisions these autonomous people made and accept their fate.
If he thinks he’s spreading awareness, he’s wrong, he’s only plying authoritarian ignorance. The only thing he should do is give advisories about the possible dangers of heat/sun to the few.
Otherwise Karl is just another nanny-state flunky frantically overplaying his hand.

Am gonna assume Herr LunchBreakLout set off from Frankfurt on his jollification. (isn’t there supposed to be an emergency going on, who do think you are going off on holiday at this time? Boris Johnson?)
Anyway as best I can see on July 13 the ‘all-day’ average temp was around 21C and the night-time low was 14C for Frankfurt
If he set off early morning and travelled by air (hence why I chose Frankfurt) he’d have been going from that 14C into a Bologna lunchtime temp of about 30 or 31 and obviously hotter at the his arrival airport.
For most folks that would be a bit of a ‘thermal shock’ – not a big one though and would normally be A Pleasant Surprise if not Actual Expectation.

It is the earth’s atmosphere not the earth’s troposphere. If the scaremongering will use the ground surface temperature rather than the temperature 2 m above the ground, the might as well use the temperature of the thermosphere layer of the earth’s atmosphere. The thermosphere is the layer between the mesosphere and the exosphere.

Yup. The warmunists can not come up with any particular cause of destruction resulting from ambient air being slightly warmer, if in fact it is. What science not warmunism tells us is that the biosphere is far more productive in tons of biomass per square mile of Earth surface area, when warm weather prevails than when cold weather prevails. It’s obvious to every sentient being and most animals and plants which either thrive only in the warm season, or else spend most waking moments in the spring and summer storing up food and fat for the coming winter.
The essence of the warmunist argument is that today, or some year in the not too distant past, was the “Goldilocks” moment in climatological history. Thus any change all, no matter how small, especially any warming, is a catastrophe. That anyone actually believes such tripe is a wonder to behold.
Had a debate here in Denmark yesterday where I told them that there was a difference between presenting surface temperature measurements and air temperature measurements … According to them, I was a claptrap, wore small shoes, a climate denier, and a troll member of a misinformation cult.
After a while, I asked them do you know about color psychology – and presented them with an image of a road view weather forecast from July 2017 of Europe and one from the same date 2022. It was on average warmer in 2017 than in 2022, the difference was that the picture of the weather forecast from 2017 was blue and green, but the picture from 2022 where the average temperature was lower was red and orange. Talk about the weather in southern Europe. The fighting words got better and better. However, I received no death threats;)
Then i told them. India, for example, experienced their coolest summer measured in 44 years in 2021, it was the fourth coolest in the country’s history based on data air-measurements. On May 4 this year, they experienced in New Delhi the coolest morning recorded in the last 41 years …

I believe the Jet Stream has been stuck in its trajectory for a while now affecting those living to the North of it with miserable weather and those to the South nice summer warm weather. Of course, add El Niño to the equation and the added warmth it brings in the South, you have, in ‘some’ places weather that is warmer than normally seen.

I’m surprised that Lauterbach didn’t march towards Poland just out of habit but I suppose the Germans like taking over Italy more and visiting famous hill top monasteries just for the view. But on a more serious note I’m getting fed up with the BBC puting out dier weather warnings and expected temperature records only for none of it to materialize but do they apologize or put out a correction? No, they just move on and adapt the story, today’s news bulletin is that the record for consecutive days where the temperature will be above ???? is expected to be broken in Greece. Unless it doesn’t.

In the Scandinavian countries we don´t call our southern neighbors Germans or Deutsche but Tyskar as we believe they came from Toskana or Tuscany in the old days. If we are right they should know that it is hot in Italy in the summer and has always been.

When I was stationed in Germany (1986-89) I loved it when it got hot! The frauleins would break out their sun dresses and never wore skirts under them. And down by the Isar they would be sunbathing nude or topless on the bank of the river.
