Even the most generous interpretation, that by not ending fossil fuel use by this date we are locked into a destructive future, past the tipping points, and our inevitable doom, is as absurd as the non-generous interpretation of the above tweet, which is now deleted:

And perhaps during that insightful explanation, why it is that the tiny minuscule element does not trap all the heat represented by the light spectrum – as Physicists have known for a very long time….and why a rise in CO2 has been found to be followed by a fall in temperatures in past millennia?

As Greta might say – “Hur vågar du berätta dessa förbannade obekväma sanningar”

Wa? I’m a science guy. Your comment looks confused. IR radiation is part of the electromagnetic spectrum and is sometimes called heat or light, as by people using a thermal imaging camera. I can’t understand what you’re trying to say,

IR radiation is a spectrum, and only a very small portion of that spectrum can be absorbed by CO2. If memory serves, it’s the 14.99 micron frequency.

Can you name this person who has claimed that CO2 traps all the heat represented by the light spectrum? I’ve never heard anyone make such a claim.

Over the last millennia, temperatures have both risen and fallen.
CO2 has only been rising for the last 200 years or so, over that time, temperatures have mostly risen.

Reply to  MarkW
June 21, 2023 4:54 pm

“temperatures have mostly risen.”

Absolutely nothing to do with the enhanced atmospheric CO2 though.

The globe has been warmer than now for most of the last 10,000 years, with a distinct deficit of CO2

Reply to  MarkW
June 24, 2023 4:35 am

My – evidently very – clumsy point is that the global warming>AWG/CC aficionados do NOT explain the action of CO2 as a – very trace element – greenhouse gas – how does CO2 warm this planet? I know no one who does not accept this planet goes through cycles of warming and cooling; I never read that the climate doom mongers refer to CO2 as a vital element for all life on this planet, nor the level of CO2 with which “they” are happy, nor that parts of this planet are greening solely because of increasing CO2 levels – nor the level of atmospheric CO2 below which ALL life becomes unsustainable….

As a non scientist I rely on others for my information; your correlation of a – transitory – warming planet with rising CO2 which therefore must be limited is thinner than threadbare gossamer; the paucity of your statement is that assuming we eradicate all human activity produced CO2, and lets for the sake of argument ignore any loop effect of sequestered CO2 being released to be reabsorbed etc etc, what are the “you” of which you are a part going to do if the planet warms more than your benighted 1.5% ( or whatever figure it is by that stage ) – what steps would you be happy with to reduce the warming effect of the Sun – encase the population of the planet under reflective glass ( as was suggested for Houston, Texas a while back?).
Never ceases to amaze me that salad munching AWG/CC loons overlook their salad peppers are grown in greenhouses into which is pumped …CO2 – why do you think that is?

A random sample of 2,500 air molecules would contain about

1,932 nitrogen molecules
519 oxygen molecules
25 water molecules (assuming 1% absolute humidity)
23 argon atoms
1 molecule of CO2

But Greta and other alarmists blame that single CO2 molecule for heating the world, even though each of the water vapor molecules absorbs more infrared radiation than the single CO2 molecule.

So if people really want to stop global warming, they need to prevent water from evaporating from the oceans. It would be a huge task to cover all the oceans with an impermeable tarp, but it could serve as a support for Biden’s proposed railroad across the Indian Ocean.

Hey, I like that atmospheric sample constituency example, that would be impressive refactored to show how insignificant a molecule of methane would look in that collection, being that it is often ritualistically chanted, as being as much as 80x more warming potential than CO2.

It didn’t say we would be dead by today.

As seen in the pasted-in copy of a gritpost.com message from Greta, dated 21 June 2018, that is provided at the top of the above article, the operative phrase is “. . . will wipe out all of humanity unless we stop using fossil fuels over the next five years.”

By my reckoning five years have just passed since that 2018 message from Greta . . . and there is no debating that her post stated “wipe out all humanity” be the end of those five years.

No “maybe’s” about it.

Well, if that’s the case (my apologies for my typo), then it’s a pretty non-meaningful statement if the “wiping out” might eventually happen at an indeterminate time, say, anytime 5 hundred to 5 million years into the future as a result of failing to stop using fossil fuels by June 2023.

But maybe I’m just being a bit too harsh on 20 year-old Greta who, after all, just graduated from high school on June 9, 2023.

Greta Thunberg is not yet cognizant of the limitations of solar panels and wind turbines. Those renewables of wind and solar only generate occasional electricity, but are incapable of manufacturing anything for society.

Greta is not cognizant that the planet populated from 1 to 8 billion in less than two hundred years, and that population explosion began right after the discovery of oil. That growth in the population was not just based on crude oil by itself, as crude oil is useless until it can be manufactured into something useable.

Today, through human ingenuity, we have manufactured that useless crude oil into more than 6,000 products that are currently benefiting society and fuels for the 50,000 jets moving people and products, and more than 50,000 merchant ships for global trade flows, and the military and space programs.

But ridding the world of oil, without a replacement in mind, would be immoral and evil, as extreme shortages of the products manufactured from fossil fuels will result in billions of fatalities from diseases, malnutrition, and weather-related deaths.

Shortages of fossil fuel products would necessitate lifestyles being mandated back to the horse and buggy days of the 1800’s, and could be the greatest threat to the planet’s eight billion residents.

The people of Texas sure are “cognizant of the limitations of solar panels and wind turbines” even if their government and ERCOT says all is well!!!

Texans asked to turn down AC and shut down appliances to avoid blackouts (msn.com)

And though temps may wax and wain, according to the weather models this heat dome could persist over the state through July! And that means the high pressure stays and thus wind generation will almost certainly suffer during periods.

When will the people say enough is enough!

I´m, wuhu, alive.

Back in 2020, 3 years before we all would be dead, a report titeld “Avoiding a climate lockdown” written by Mariana Mazzucato was published. After that, it was picked up and republished by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), which describes itself as “a global, CEO-led organization of over 200 leading businesses working together to accelerate the transition to a sustainable world.”.

In short: an economist who works for the WHO has written a report concerning “climate lockdowns”, which has been published by both a Gates+Soros backed NGO and a group representing almost every bank, oil company and tech giant on the planet.

The text of the report itself is actually quite craftily constructed. It doesn’t outright argue for climate lockdowns, but instead discusses ways “we” can prevent them: “As COVID-19 spread […] governments introduced lockdowns in order to prevent a public-health emergency from spinning out of control. In the near future, the world may need to resort to lockdowns again – this time to tackle a climate emergency […] To avoid such a scenario, we must overhaul our economic structures and do capitalism differently”.

There is never any scientific evidence cited to support this position. Rather, it is a fact-free scare-line used to try and force a mental connection in the public, between visceral self-preservation (fear of disease) and concern for the environment. It is as transparent as it is weak.

Everytime i hear the “bells” from the red alert, Greta Thunberg et al, it reminds me of a Victoria Wood sketch from the 1980s, where an upper-middle class woman remarks, upon meeting a coal miner: “I suppose we don´t really need coal now we´ve got electricity”.

The division Mariana Mazzucato is head for at the WHO is by the way, called “The Council of Economics of Health for all. Lucky us. Health for ALL. How dare you.

Public reaction to COVID changed many aspects of life I’d assumed were settled – after decades of denegrating Malthusians, doomers and anyone thinking sudden catastrophic changes happened off Wall Street I wonder whether technological advance will allow the few to upset the many – maybe that’s the next stage of “old” kicking in.

More on topic: The more GT personal details that turn up in public forum, the less I blame her or her parents for participating. She might not be bright enough to understand her own cause. Her parents might know she won’t ever be. What a difficult situation they could be in.

I dont blame Greta Thunberg for her actions. On the other hand I dont either see anything usefull in anti-Greta, Naomi Seibt, but I have to admit, she has more potential at an educational level than Greta.

Her parents that´s a whole other discussion that is hard to settle, but I think it´s not an coincidence that they support her, their daughter is following the consensus and as long as her rhetorical “device” stay´s tuned, at, how dare you, she´s nothing else than a one hit wonder, and it goes like this “Always look at the “dark” side of life”, just let her “sing”, her predictions of tipping-points and death is upon us is dated back to the book Man and Nature from 1864.

Why 1864, because I Won´t count Malthus predictions back in 1798 as a tipping point. But what the “heaven”, Fossil Fuels is still here, the meme deleted, that´s just Greta, what we should be “affraid” of is the devasting of the educational system and the downward levels of critical thinking.

As many as eight billion people will die before the end of this century if we don’t, by the end of the week, curtail every activity that supports human society. And if we do those 8 billion won’t make it past Christmas.

After a few days of a certain relative staying, I am inclined to believe that headline…

June 21, 2023 11:15 am

Well, we didn’t stop with fossil fuels, we haven’t succeeded in reducing any emissions so we’re all doomed and on our way to glory any day now. Can I have all the taxes and green subsidies that I have been forced to pay for the last 30 years back please?

Hey Greta, welcome to the club of false predictors of the end of the world, joining the likes of Paul Ehrlich, Al Gore, Michael Mann, AOC, and the “boy who cried wolf”. After 40+ years of false dire predictions that never happen, people stop listening.

I figure the COVID shutdowns gave a couple of extra days.

Even under an EXTREMELY generous interpretation, it’s wrong.

If we equate ‘Climate Change’ with ‘Gradual Heat Death of the Universe’ [hey, they both have something to do with temperature changing!], then yes: humanity (or whatever we have evolved/devolved into) will definitely be ‘wiped out by climate change’ withing 1×10^106 years from now (assuming we make it out of our solar system and eventually out of our galaxy).

If we remain stuck on earth, and call ‘climate change’ the ‘gradual change of the sun into a red giant cooking the earth’ we only have about 500M-1B years left above ground… and another 4B-5B years in subterranean dwellings powered by fusion/geothermal. Doesn’t sound like much fun, but maybe our technology will have advanced far enough for us to enjoy virtual living on what Earth used to be like. By that time, evolution/genetic drift will definitely make us different enough to be another species entirely (although we might still call ourselves ‘humans’). 500M years ago trilobites were the most advanced species. Who knows what it will be in another 500M years.

None of this, however, has anything to whether or not we stopped using fossil fuels between the years 2018 and 2023.

But AOC said we had (I forget how many years) left!
WHICH EXPERT SHOULD I BELIEVE!

June 21, 2023 5:52 pm

winning an argument with a child with a strawman is lame

doing it with sarcasm, the lowest form of humor, is below lame.

anyway

Even the most generous interpretation, that by not ending fossil fuel use by this date we are locked into a destructive future

well thats exactly what the article she cited argued. so its not a generous interpretation
its an accurate one.

Something to think about.
I thought “Racist” was the main card.
Maybe it’s just the same card in a different suit?

The problem is that an alarmist comment or misquote gets promoted hugely.

Greta was told of an article on GritPost no longer available but saved in Web Archive:
https://web.archive.org/web/20180501150731/https://gritpost.com/humans-extinct-climate-change/

The article misquoted James Anderson — a professor of atmospheric chemistry at Harvard University — who did not say anything about humanity being wiped out.

So Greta didn’t even read the article but tweeted inaccurate information without fact-checking it. She isn’t a reliable source and should not be treated as such. She should not speak at important venues because she has no clue.

What James Anderson actually said is even more laughable:

“The chance that there will be any permanent ice left in the Arctic after 2022 is essentially zero,” Anderson said.

Quite a top climate scientist. Most cli-sci we hear about are like him, even more zero than Arctic ice.

Mosher – all we have to do is wait. As a species, we will outlive all these lies and stupidity. The world will not burn and the madness will sink into history as an object lesson and warning for all future generations.

If that’s really the case, it might be a good thing because it will finally shut up all the climate alarmists, Greta Thunberg among others.

Water vapour is by far the largest identified cause of global warming yet it is insufficiently measured, considered, planned for or even reported. Yet some say that water vapour is i reality the compensating mechanism that moderates the earth’s temperature down to the minor cyclical nature that has existed for the last 1000 years.

…..yet it insufficiently measured….

We don’t really need to measure it. We can see it. As soon as the relative humidity exceeds 100%, clouds form….immediately reflecting 50% of incoming sunlight to outer space…thus reducing the Sun’s energy striking the surface. Wherever Sun does strikes the ocean or other wetted surfaces, about 80% of its energy goes into making water vapor, which random hours later and a random windblown distance away…..again creates clouds in a never ending randomized energy balance.

The end of the world went well then, didn’t it……(22nd June)

I like the picture of Greta.
She seems to be thinking, “Damn! We’re still alive. NOW what do I claim?”

June 23, 2023 2:24 am

Nothing pisses warmistas faster or more completely than having their forecasts of doom fail.

Which is really very strange: One might suppose that the people who are the most worried and fearful of Bad Things Coming Soon, would be relieved to learn that their fears and concerns were overblown, or better yet, completely wrong.
But no, no…on the contrary, they absolutely hate it when nothing bad happens…again.

I do not think it is a sign of a healthy mind to be certain that something bad is going to happen, and to be very upset about this belief…and to then be even MORE upset when the thing that was feared, does NOT happen.
I am fairly certain that it is actually pathological to think and behave this way.
