Greenland Temperature Updates

From NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

By Paul Homewood

Every year I publish the latest Greenland temperature data from the DMI. Unfortunately they have not got round to updating it for 2021.

The data is of course extremely damning for the alarmist narrative about rising temperatures in the Arctic and Greenland meltdowns, as it shows that Greenland was just as warm in the 1930s to 50s as it has been in the last two decades, with the exception of that one warm year in 2010.

Maybe that is the reason for the withholding of the data for the last two years.

However we can still access the up to date numbers from GISS:

https://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/station_data_v4_globe/

GISS publish both the unadjusted (ie actual) temperatures as well as their homogenised ones, which are used in their global temperature dataset.

The actual data follows the same trend as DMI, with temperatures as high around the 1930s and 40s. (The numbers are slightly different because GISS use meteorological years – Dec to Nov).

In contrast the tampered figures show considerable warming over the period.

Nuuk is on the west coast, and temperatures on the east side at Tasilaq show the same pattern:

It is worth noting that temperatures at both sites in 2021 and 2022 were below those 20th Century numbers.

Give it a little more time for the officially forgotten concept of turning points in long cycles.

I found a more recent version of this AMO index graph, without the longer term warming trend from global warming, at:

The article I found this at is:

Okay thanks, except it looks like this is the detrended version that is not from good statistical practice given the very few cycles involved.

Data from GISS
Would those be the Ad-GISS-ted data?

From 2010 WUWT post on this airport.
Where is the temperature adjustment for 1979 when this airport was built, 2.5 miles and at 283 feet elevation. (Verses the sea port location at the old “Sea Plane Airport”). Seems like a big change, since I doubt many weather observers would have hiked out to take daily readings.

And how much residual heat was given off with the 3,117 ft × 98 ft x 18″ concrete being cured? How Much Heat is Generated? As a general rule, the Portland Cement Association estimates that for every 100 pounds of cement, the concrete gains anywhere from 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit in temperature.

It’s kind of funny looking at the concern about Greenland warming up, until you look at the scale (on the left side of last diagram), and see the range is from +2 to -4 deg C. Nothing funny about that.

Wake me up when the Greenlanders bring in the barley harvest.
You know, like they did years ago?

Greenlanders farmed grains at a time when the Nuuk area of Greenland was warmer than it is now, but (according to data favored by Judith Curry) the world as a whole was cooler than it is now.

How about the people who live in Greenland? Are they complaining about warming and the sea rising?

Have you got your climate anxiety therapist‘s number handy?

“”Ice sheets can collapse at 600 metres a day, far faster than feared, study finds

The West Antarctic ice sheet may already have passed the point at which major losses are unstoppable“”

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/apr/05/ice-sheets-collapse-far-faster-than-feared-study-climate-crisis

Be very afraid and all that.

600 metres per day – that’s a joke innit

How fast do we reckon this ice sheet is collapsing….

(I’d guess about 5 mph – 190,000 metres per day)

They probably meant 600mm/ day They have trouble with the decimal

Meanwhile, in the real world, Antarctica averages more than 40° below zero, so even if it were to warm by a few degrees it would be in no danger of melting (or “collapsing,” in the Grauniad’s terminology).

Antarctic ice mass fluxes are in near perfect balance. The best and most comprehensive study to date of Antarctica ice mass fluxes is this one, from NASA:

Zwally, et al (2021). Mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet 1992–2016: Reconciling results from GRACE gravimetry with ICESat, ERS1/2 and Envisat altimetry. Journal of Glaciology, 67(263), 533-559. doi:10.1017/jog.2021.8

They reported an Antarctic ice mass trend of −12 ±64 Gt/yr.

That’s a fancy way of saying “zero.” (12 Gt/yr = 0.1 inch sea-level change per century.)

Don’t think it would be the first time.

Does anybody remember Doctor Who (ie Tom Baker)?

“”Russell T Davies, Showrunner said: “In a galaxy of comets and supernovas, here comes the biggest star of all. Jinkx Monsoon is on a collision course with the TARDIS, and Doctor Who will never be the same again!”

I suppose this article is more about Greenland than Dragqueenland. But I’ll bite. It does seem the next season of Dr. Who will be led by the first gay doctor, who may or may not be the love interest of the drag queen recently added to the cast (Monsoon).

This gives them the opportunity to ask their audience to declare their personal interrogatives along with their pronouns. Because Science. Perhaps they will travel in time to explain how if only we embrace children having transgender surgeries, we can reverse the damage allegedly done by CO2 and cowburps.

Yep, it’s the next season of Dxctxr Whx.

Anyway, since these graphs illustrate the concept of a turning point in a rough sense, at what point does the lack of the hockey stick acceleration (even with “adjustments”) become an issue for the Greens? Surely, at some point it will become difficult to indoctrinate new “scientists” into the profession.

Having grown up in the hysteria as opposed to creating it, they won’t like seeing these tricks revealed up close. How much economic destruction can we endure before this nonsense goes away?

What is very clear is the PDO/AMO cycle. Nothing happening here.

The big deal for Greenland is that it is gaining permanent ice extent and elevation. On the current trend, it will have 100% permanent ice cover before 2100.

Greenland and Iceland are the only locations so far showing increased permanent ice cover. However the Northern Hemisphere has a long term upward trend in annual snow extent so only decades to centuries before the permafrost on the large land masses begins its long march southward.

DMI says Greenland is losing ice. Rightwingers have been saying DMI’s Surface Mass Balance indicates Greenland is gaining ice, but DMI says their SMB does not include Greenland’s ice sheet losing ice at its edge.

As for northern hemisphere snow cover: The trend is slightly downward according to
https://euanmearns.com/northern-hemisphere-snow-cover-2/
There is the matter of NH snow cover decreasing a lot in the spring and increasing in the fall, with the fall increase having a factor of snow replacing lack of precipitation in places gaining fall humidity from the warming Arctic Ocean.

Where’s the catastrophic SLR that we’ve been promised? The state of the ice dome of Greenland doesn’t mean didley squat to most people that don’t live there and perhaps some mariners who would be directly concerned. The whole point of the wailing and hand wringing over it warming is catastrophic SLR! That is the Final Nail!

So where is that catastrophic SLR? We’ve only been promised it is about to happen for the last 30-40 years and what do we see? NOTHING out of the ordinary! Yet the same old clowns continue to make the same old noises about “melting” and “warming”.

Anyone with a brain behind that eye can tell that the “warming” is trivial, even if we accept “adjusted” data.

What’s up with the Nuuk temperature graph having the legend placed where it largely covers the 2010 spike?

Graphs above if accurate clearly show the effect of adjustment and homogenization, cooling the past to ensure today is hotter, to match the hockey stick shape better.

As always, evidence of a crime.
