New Zealand Climate Commission Report Recommends Fewer Cars, More Electric, Fewer Cows

Guest essay by Eric Worrall

Climate ambition meet Modern Monetary Theory – a slap for every remaining productive sector of the New Zealand economy.

Ardern says climate crisis is ‘life or death’ as New Zealand landmark report calls for sweeping changes

Climate Commission recommends shift to electric cars, large-scale agricultural reform and an end to reliance on gas in homes

Tess McClure in Christchurch @tessairini

New Zealand has been handed a new vision for dramatic reduction of its greenhouse gas emissions – including reduced animal numbers on farms, no new household gas connections by 2025, and a dramatic shift to electric cars in the next decade.

The report laid out pathways for New Zealand to meet its greenhouse gas reduction obligations by 2050. They include wide-scale agricultural reform to reduce methane emissions, dropping herd sizes by 10%-15%, ending imports of combustion-engine cars, eliminating new household gas connections, and less travel by car overall. Some of those changes would need to be dramatic transformations: to meet its goal for transport emissions, New Zealand would need to increase electric vehicle share of the market to 50% in the next 10 years. It is now around 1-2%.

At the release of the commission’s advice, Ardern said the report was “one of the most significant documents I’ll receive in my time as prime minister”.

She also noted that the path ahead would be challenging for New Zealand. “Having a roadmap doesn’t change the fact the road will be steep and tough at times,” she said.

Read more: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jun/09/jacinda-ardern-climate-crisis-life-or-death-landmark-report-new-zealand-electric-cars-farms

The full report is available here, but it is pretty heavy going. I didn’t make it past the self congratulation, assurances of respect for the indigenes, and repeated claims the report is objective. The signal to noise ratio makes it close to unreadable.

If New Zealand intends to follow the report recommendations, New Zealand likely needs to find a lot of money for subsidising Lithium electric cars, building new renewable generators, and building or renovating houses so they can survive New Zealand’s brutal winters without fossil fuel heating. But the Ardern government probably thinks lack of money is not a problem. New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern openly embraces Modern Monetary Theory.

According to Wikipedia, MMT’s main tenets are that a government that issues its own fiat money:

  1. Can pay for goods, services, and financial assets without a need to first collect money in the form of taxes or debt issuance in advance of such purchases;
  2. Cannot be forced to default on debt denominated in its own currency;
  3. Is limited in its money creation and purchases only by inflation, which accelerates once the real resources (labour, capital and natural resources) of the economy are utilized at full employment;
  4. Recommends strengthening automatic stabilisers to control demand-pull inflation[10] rather than relying upon discretionary tax changes;
  5. Bond issues are a monetary policy device, not a funding device.

The idea appears to be governments can print money whenever they run short, limited only by the risk of triggering hyperinflation or stagflation. President Joe Biden’s advisors are also reportedly fans of Modern Monetary Theory.

While the already rich do very well in a loose fiscal environment, such as the environment created by practitioners of Modern Monetary Theory, some might suggest excessive money printing has negative effects, like debasing the value of the cash savings of pensioners and other people of limited means. But I guess the government can always help pensioners out with some of that newly minted money, if they behave.

There are well known methods to restrain demand pull inflation in a loose fiscal environment. For example the government could radically increase the supply of workers, flooding the market with labor, to counter demand pull upward pressure on wages. More workers chasing the same number of jobs makes it difficult to demand a raise, even if the cost of living is rising.

Open top hole, insert hoof, chew the carbon cud.

Reduce, Reuse, Redistributive change. Yeah, there’s a clinic for that, and with an 8 to 1 parts, organs, and cellular exchange rate, an individual human life is not worth the social cost of CO2 we… it emits.

The key is herd numbers, you might well mandate a maximum herd size, but you can always have another herd, as uk farmers do , we herd number cattle number stamped on plastic yellow tags fixed to a cows ear.

In New Zealand, there is a national register of all farm animals, every single one is tracked – even lifestyle blocks with maybe 2 steers. Its there for controlling serious animal health outbreaks, which is sensible.

A different Ross here, but to quote from

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/nov/08/we-are-a-role-model-how-james-shaw-pushed-new-zealand-towards-a-zero-carbon-future

“Our” Climate Change Minister enjoys a craft beer, (oops, escaping carbon dioxide!!!) but can’t name a book or music.

“The political, for now, leaves no time for much else. He draws a blank when asked to name books or music he enjoys; weekends will, if he’s lucky, involve a walk with his wife, Annabel and a craft beer – “one of my greatest pleasures of modern Wellington” – when the work he brings home allows it.

The table-top role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons, always a big part of his life, is on the back-burner. He only keeps up with new episodes of Star Trek: Discovery because he is not allowed to read ministerial papers on aeroplanes.

“There’s a thing particularly about sci fi where you’re imagining possible futures,” he says. “And so interestingly, there’s a coherence there between what we do here and that.”

But he says his move to politics and all has come with it will be worthwhile if “that was the moment when we got on top of our emissions and started to bring them down.””

Along with China. It is rather comical that western civilizations try to remove fossil fuels by purchasing stupid solar panels for their grids which are made by China who uses fossil fuels and slave labor to make them and fossil fuels to ship them. Finally, western civilizations use fossil fuels to install, maintain and back them up.

If China, India, etc. don’t do the same, will it make any difference? If not, what’s the point of measures that could cripple economies to accomplish nothing?

Not so. It only has to get to bottom of North Island where 2nd largest city and capital is located, as well that’s mostly an underused DC line which has lower losses.
The rest of North island can gets it electricity from hydro, steam geothermal and wind…yes it’s pretty windy
They are already at 80% renewable , the only reason coal use is up this year is a natural gas plant is undergoing planned maintenance

You say I am wrong about the power loss but give exactly zero evidence for saying so. If you think the power from the South Island stops at Wellington you are totally deluded.

The answer is yes. Overnight the power runs the other way as the NI has ‘excess’. of course if the links between nort and south are cut – there are 3 – there would be trouble, but thats a reality. Huntly coal power is running because its on call and they have a natural gas pre processing plant closed for maintenance so some GT arent running. They should keep Huntly but wont.

Why would a power plant be “On Call”?

Perhaps because there is unreliable power connected to the grid?

Yep, that must be it. And all coal burned to keep the Huntly plant ready for duty when called upon is wasted.

And the cost to build and install the unreliable power equipment was wasted.
And the cost of maintaining the unreliable power equipment is wasted.
And the cost to extend the grid to connect to the unreliable power equipment was wasted.

But at least you have functional dispatchable “on call” power available when the unreliables fail to meet the needs of your islands, at this point anyway. Given the politics of NZ, that may not the case be for long.

From the article: “Ardern says climate crisis is ‘life or death’ as New Zealand landmark report calls for sweeping changes”

President Biden said today in a speech he gave in Europe that the U.S. military told him that Climate Change was the most serious problem the United States faces.

There may have been a general or two who looked at things that way, and the Joint Chiefs ought to fire them, since there is no way they can know that Climate Change is an existential threat to the U.S. or the world. All they are doing is presenting unsubstantiated speculation as facts, just like the Climate Alarmists do. The generals are repeating what they heard, but they couldn’t back their claims up with facts any more than the alarmists can. Were I their superior officer, I wouldn’t let them near the decision-making process.

We don’t need politically correct military generals. They will end up getting a lot of people k!lled.

Biden is looking so weak he may cause some of the world’s murderous dictators to overstep. He looks like Neville Chamberlain. He doesn’t want any confrontation with Putin. He said so before he left for Europe. Biden is operating from weakness.

The Biden weakness may be a result of delusional thought processes, or it may be the result of the Russians having something on Biden and his family that they can use to blackmail Biden into doing their bidding.

The wife of the Mayor of Moscow gave Hunter Biden $3.5 million dollars. I wonder what she bought with that? Maybe she bought Joe’s capitulation. That a pretty cheap price to pay. it looks like the Russians got a bargain.

That’s Ok, but it doesn’t make up for all the capitulation beforehand. There would never have been WW2 if dear sweet Neville had a hard steel pair of nuts and stood up to Hitler after the Sudatenland takeover. German generals were ready to overthrow Hitler once League of Nations came out with a threat of war over the issue, but instead it gave away part of Czechoslovakia, the big paper wagging in the air that Chamberlain is so pathetically famous for, especially after Hitler then took the rest, and Chamberlain still didn’t do anything.

Um, okay…

UK (along with France) declared war due to Polish defense/alliance pacts that Chamberlain had pushed for, in hopes of stopping German aggression in the wake of the Czechoslovakian invasion. He had hoped Russia would also sign on, but of course they were secretly plotting with the Germans to divide up Poland.

That pact backfired when Hitler invaded Poland anyway on Sept 1 1939, forcing France and Britain to declare war. The British and French amassed at the French border but there was not much activity for several months, a period referred to as The Phony War.

Then after Hitler quickly conquered Norway in the spring despite British support, Chamberlain was forced to resign May 10 1940 when it was clear the opposition would never accept him as leader of a war coalition government. That same day Germany launched its offensive against France.

The Nazis ousted the British and French forces from the continent at Dunkirk by June 4 and then overran most of France.

Chamberlain’s earlier attempts at appeasement probably did not seem unreasonable to most people at the time. Nobody was in a hurry to get into another Great War and few saw Hitler for the monster he became. And historical hindsight is 20/20 of course. And it might seem fair to fault him in not maintaining and improving the military well enough, but the same could be said for most all the PMs after WWI.

Pretty good summary… The initial area Hitler was claiming was Sudetenland , which German speaking not Czech, and under the allies principles at Versailles should have stayed German, but wasn’t. How far Hitler would go in wanting all checkoslkvakia wasn’t clearly recognised at the time , and of course they wanted peace even more.
It’s forgotten now but the Poles took a small piece of Czech Silesia as well , so they weren’t innocent of war mongering

It’s even worse than that. I quoted “American generals” as saying climate change was a problem, but Biden’s actual words were: “The Joint Chiefs of Staff said Global Warming was the greatest threat to the United States”.

So Biden is saying the highest generals in the land are signing off on Global Warming being the greatest threat facing the United States.

If that is the case, and I doubt it seriously, then we need new members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. I personally, think Biden is taking liberties with what generals may have said about Global Warming.

It’s called “kicking the can down the road”. It’s a common human reaction when one doesn’t know what to do about a situation, but dictators take that to mean they can do as they please, so that, doing nothing, is not a good way to reign in dictators. It actually emboldens them.

Except for ACT, maybe.

But yes, while a little while ago (April 12, 2021) we had:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/300275333/national-wont-vote-for-climate-change-commission-proposals-in-current-form

Recently we have:

https://www.interest.co.nz/news/110779/theres-likely-be-some-cross-party-consensus-emissions-budgets-differences-will-arise

Clearly nobody in National has read any skeptical sites, including this one.

And Rod Carr is legally blind, so he likely won’t be reading them either.

And he was influenced by his (already brainwashed?) children to take it on:

Meanwhile, the sheeple are lapping it up … according to a 1000 people survey!

The bit about STUFF being a climate alarmist leftist propaganda outlet – a couple of years ago the conducted an online survey about climate change and stated that any comments denying climate change would not be accepted! I guess the survey provided them with the the expected result!

New Zealand, like the rest of the world, is getting colder, just as we published in 2002, and the exact opposite of the ~50 years of failed predictions by global warming fraudsters. The warmist fraudsters have made 48 failed, full expired very-scary global warming predictions to end 2020, all of them wrong. The probability of that being random stupidity by warmist scientists is ~281 trillion to 1.
These warmist fraudsters were not just being exceptionally stupid, they were lying to you from day 1, and they knew it.

CLIMATE CHANGE, COVID-19, AND THE GREAT RESET
A CLIMATE, ENERGY AND COVID PRIMER FOR POLITICIANS AND MEDIA
By Allan M.R. MacRae, May 8, 2021 UPDATE 1e
Download the WORD file
https://thsresearch.files.wordpress.com/2021/05/climate-change-covid-19-and-the-great-reset-update-1e-readonly.docx
[excerpt]
This treatise was originally sent to Canadian and American politicians and the media in March 2021. Most of them won’t understand it, because they have no scientific competence and have been utterly duped – programmed for decades by false climate scares and green energy frauds.
This update was written in May 2021 to report even more global cooling as measured by satellites and new harsh cold events, particularly in Europe and North America that have severely harmed early crops. Harsh cold events have struck all countries in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres.

SUMMARY

We published in 2002 that there was NO catastrophic human-made global warming /climate change crisis, and green energy schemes were NOT green and produced little useful (dispatchable) energy. Dangerous global warming and climate change have NOT HAPPENED and green energy schemes have proved to be COSTLY, UNRELIABLE AND INEFFECTIVE.

Global warming is NOT a threat, but global cooling IS dangerous to humanity and the environment. In 2002 we predicted that natural global cooling would start circa 2020, based on low solar activity, and that prediction is strongly supported by recent evidence.

Politicians foolishly believed scary global warming falsehoods and brewed the perfect storm, crippling our energy systems with costly and unreliable green energy schemes that utterly fail due to intermittency, at a time when we need more cheap, reliable, dispatchable energy due to increased energy demand and imminent global cooling. The people of Australia, Britain, Germany, California, Texas and elsewhere have all suffered due to GREEN ENERGY FAILURES THAT WERE PREDICTABLE AND WERE PREDICTED.

We published in March 2020 that there was no justification for the Covid-19 lockdown, and that it would cause great and needless harm. The Covid-19 lockdown is now estimated to have caused 10-to-100-times the damage of the Covid-19 illness, in terms of increased harm to individuals, families and the economies they depend on.

The same leftist groups concocted and promoted the global warming fraud and the Covid-19 lockdown scam, for political and financial gain. Then these groups linked the two frauds, stating “to solve Covid-19 we have to solve Climate Change” – utterly false and foolish, not even plausible enough to be specious. Then these same groups proposed their Final Solution, the “Great Reset”, a Chinese Communist Party style dictatorship, a centrally-controlled economy where we live like poor slaves, lorded over by our wealthy political masters.

The tragic reality is that the twin frauds of Climate-and-Covid have been accepted by most politicians. Some have covertly or overtly embraced extreme-left politics, and others are so simple-minded and gullible that they believe any falsehood that is repeated often enough. We are governed by scoundrels and imbeciles.

The previous government signed up to the Paris Accords in 2016, thus making the targets law , fully expecting to pay around $1.5 bill per year in carbon costs.
The reality is it’s here to stay ever since the conservative national party and it’s PM Shipley signed onto Kyoto.

At some stage New Zealanders will wake up but it might be to late and our economy will be wrecked .There is a real divide between the populations of the major cities and the country areas .This government is incompetent and driven by ideology and they have no idea how the food even gets onto the supermarket shelves .
They are spending money like there is no tomorrow yet St Jacinda was on TV this morning saying there is no money to pay nurses any more .The nurses are striking through out the country for better pay .This government have run a very large deficit to fund Covid response and are paying them selves very well as politicians .
Our tourist sector is having a very hard time but farming and forestry exports are keeping the country going.
I have told this government when they sent select committees around the country before they issued this climate wish list that methane from farmed livestock is a non problem .
All enteric methane is a cycle as all fodder consumed by farmed animals has absorbed CO2 and the tiny methane emissions break down in 8 to 10 years in the upper atmosphere into CO2 and water vapour . Not one additional atom or molecule of C02 or CH4 is added to the atmosphere over any time span.
From 1999 untill 2008 methane atmospheric levels flat lined so what was the problem ?
Over that time period world coal extraction was steady around 4.7 billion tonnes but from 2009 coal mining and use ratcheted up and 8.2 billion tonnes was mined in 2018 which corresponded with a rapid rise in methane levels but still a very small amount under 2 pp million .
No one in this government wants to know these facts. They want to restrict our farming which has the lowest carbon footprint in the world for our milk and meat products exported to the other side of the world .
This government is happy that Asia burns as much coal as they want but they are going to restrict exports of food to those same countries .
Farming to feed the world ,

Hello Alistair,
Of course the select committee process was an exercise in futility a bit like a mock trial ,they were always going to go down this road and even the most convincing scientific based argument was never going to change their minds.
Greenpeace have chimed in with a statement that New Zealand has the highest per capita methane emissions in the world .
I would point out that New Zealand exports 4 to 5 times as much meat and milk than what is consumed here .Why are those so called emissions not counted in the countries were the food is eaten .
The same applies to our forestry exports which are grown on a rotation of 27 to 30 year Over 70% of these forests are exported as logs or sawn timber and are classed as our emissions .
This makes no sense to me as these trees have absorbed CO2 over their life time and a great deal of the timber will still be around when the next rotation is harvested so they are a carbon sink .Why not ?
Can any of you tell us why timber meat and milk products grown for export are designated emissions in their country of origin BUT coal and oil and gas are emissions in the country where they are used ,not in the country of origin.
When we dig into this climate change we soon find out that the inmates are running the Asylum .

In New Zealand there are currently some 26.15 million sheep and some 4 million beef cattle.
To reduce ( i.e.cull or kill them) these numbers by 15% we are talking mass slaughter.
By way of example sheep numbers declined from 26.8 million to 26.1 million as a result of a drought last year.
There was consultation with agricultural groups in recent years but to get a truthful answer to their responses will require a FOI request and a long wait,I suspect.

Paris itself doesn’t require anything – all commitments are purely voluntary. Some countries, like China, have committed to increase emissions, some countries, like Pakistan, have made non-specific promises with unspecified timelines. If NZ commits to any specific reductions, it’s all on the NZ government.

The scariest thought to me from this governance is the end phrase “…so they can survive New Zealand’s brutal winters without fossil fuel heating.” I’ve believed for decades we would in my lifetime see the start of a sudden new cold era. These extremists will not only deactivate, but demolish all the infrastructure of fossil fuel discovery, recovery, refinery, and delivery. So that not if, but when the real deep cold climate change occurs, (and the temperatures plummet fast) there will be no ability to restart the fossil fuel system to avoid mass mortality from exposure including “in home”. (as happened to 40+ people in Texas in January 2021 (at the same latitude as … Bermuda).

I had a Canadian girl from just north of Toronto, where it freezes 3 to 6 feet under the ground, come out here in November and she frequently felt the cold whereas I was happy in a tshirt. I put it down to the amount of moisture in the air and the wind.
The big differences between a UK winter and ours is that some days here the temperature can hit 18c on a nice day whereas in the UK it is perpeturely gloomy.

Mike, I’m a three hour drive west of Toronto, a ten minute run to the river that forms the Canada / US Border. The region’s temperature is strongly moderated by the “Great Lakes” which are giant thermal batteries that make our summers, and winters milder than they would be otherwise. North of them in Ontario you do get deep cold winters. Toronto is right on the shore of Lake Ontario, the lowest of the Great Lakes, so she might not have been all that “deep cold” familiar. I spent some time in the 1980’s in a town in Cheshire. The people thought I was lying when I said I was two kilometers from both a river a mile wide, and the beach of a lake that was 300km away from opposite shore. Their town “river” was ten yards wide, and walkable from stone to stone. It’s all relative.

You are told “climate change” means only warmer/hotter. Look at a temperature graph zoomed way back. From now backward to the last 600Ky-1MY. What you will see at that perspective is a series of 120-150 glacial eras interrupted by brief interglacial warm periods of about 10KY. We are already about 2-3K years past the average time interglacial warm periods end. When they end, the descent into deep glacial cold is now thought to be more a plunge. A century at most, perhaps a fast as decades. The breadbaskets of Canada, Ukraine, Russia, China quickly totally unproductive in years. What does that … has to be many magnitudes more powerful than weak limited thermal forcing of CO2.

The fountrys electricity supply is already 80% or so renewable, hydro and geothermal being the bulk , which luckily provide grid stability for the wind generation. So no south Australia blackouts. The location of long narrow country in a windy part of the world also means the output of wind turbines is greater % of Max capacity than most other countries that use them.

I must admit that I’ve been negligently myopic. Researching into the Northern Hemisphere’s experience with Glaciations, but knowing near zero about the effects in the Southern, outside a wee bit around Chile. I’m going to change that. What clicked that light on was your reference to “Hydro”. (which in my Canadian Province of Ontario is still the common name for home delivered electric power… Niagara Falls, and all.) My brain went from water moving from high elevation to low …to water in a new ice age … frozen, but moving ever so slow. I started thinking what was happening in Australia, and New Zealand 40 KYA ?

Ardern is pro-green and very friendly with China.

They live in an isolated bubble that can’t even defend their own airspace declaring themselves pacifists, warm in the knowledge that push comes to shove and a major threat comes from the north/northwest then the NZ Government will bravely defend the country to the Last Australian.

Their exports are Hobbits and All Blacks. Hobbits are only an industry because the exchange rate is favourable to other nations and the All Blacks don’t play the entire year.

Ardern’s publicly stated last year that the fix for her country’s employment problem was to use NZ labour to rebuild post China Virus Australia.

Honestly, if it wasn’t for the still terrifying All Black and the warm nostalgia of the ANZAC Spirit we would throw rocks at them.

I believe the 1999 Defense White Paper stated that Australia’s weakest link was NZ and a small military force would easily take over the place, also that terrorists could easily enter NZ and by proxy get to Australia as NZ does such a terrible job in these areas by being the parasites they are (in a geo-political sense).

Now that they and Victorian governments are part of the CCP it looks like we need to ‘treat some white ants’ or red ones as the case might be.

You forget the ACC levy of 1.5% (We have MediCare levy at the same rate) and the GST, on everything apart from female sanitary products, at 15% (We have GST at 10% but it is not applied to everything). Now do your sums with that additional information.

So if you are paying 33% income tax, add 1.5% ACC and 15% GST to get the effective tax rate.

I just broke the numbers down to ‘international’ genuine tourists. Business people arent seeing the sights and friends and family are doing mostly that.

Unfortunately it seems likely we will have to go over this self inflicted and self righteous cliff as reason no longer has any value in the general population. There is an article here (https://www.aier.org/article/lockdown-kitsch/) that argues the mass of people are experiencing something profoundly communal. Perhaps better to read the article rather than my interpretation and here are two extracts:

“If the Covid experience is indeed an aesthetic experience, the impotence of our counter arguments, our practical concerns and our personal pains is certainly explained very well. Those we wish to convince to change their minds are not using their minds; those we wish to share our concerns do not have concerns; those we wish to feel our distress cannot see us or our distress: they are caught up in a kind of satisfaction – occasioned by the concerted responses of governments and populations to an invisible global attack – that is comprised of a heady sense of profound community, of fellow feeling on a universal scale. We cannot touch this experience with our facts and our projects and our pains. At the very most, we can only threaten to puncture its ecstasy; insofar as we do that, we are batted away as an inconvenient distraction.”

“An immoral distraction too – which is why the batting away can get so ugly. An aesthetic experience, Kant advised, is not in itself a moral experience. Appeals to moral content and respect for the moral law detract from the disinterest necessary for the aesthetic mode. A fourth neighbour, with concerns about the morality of sipping wine under a midsummer’s sky while nearby children suffer from neglect has made a category error too. But not because morality is irrelevant to aesthetic experience, but because particular moral content is irrelevant to it. In fact, an aesthetic experience, because it is premised upon the setting aside of conceptual analysis, worldly projects and personal preferences, is excellent preparation for the moral and a good sign of a moral disposition; it only excludes particular moral issues. This explains the most curious feature of the Covid consensus: its combination of intense righteousness and ethical indifference; its simultaneous heady capture of the moral high ground and calm disregard for moral fallout all around.”

Eating fewer cows means killing more animals for food. Plant food requires killing lots of animals (frogs, field mice, birds, boars etc.) to protect plant crops. Many die by chemical warfare, spraying of chemical agents, while grass that feeds cows doesn’t require any contamination, it is resilient by itself.

Just 30 ppm above the Total Death Zone for all plant life on earth (at 150ppm). The foundation of the food chain of all life on earth. The industrial revolutions fuel sources of coal, and petroleum were for plants like an oxygen mask placed on the face of a blue faced emergency patient. I think a man managed rise in CO2 levels to the 1000-1200 ppm level would be a perfect target range. We do need to focus harder on the toxic byproducts of current production, and consumer waste. Even a cursory glance at the MMT wiki shows is is based on Abba Lerner’s functional finance. All this sounds cozy, and gives monetarists a warm fuzzy feeling.

When Abba Lerner was confronted in 1971 at NYC Queens College on Keynesian banker Schacht’s 1930’s policies, he blurted out ‘If the Germans had accepted Schacht’s policies, Hitler would not have been necessary’ – interesting how a Prof. showed his true face.

Schacht, founder with Bank of England’s Norman Montague, of the Basel-based Bank of International Settlements, was Hitlers economic minister. The BIS today is totally free of Swiss jurisdiction, and immune to any legal process.
‘Modern’ Monetarism may seem to be a quackademic aberration, until it puts boots on, or maybe high heels.

For those Hayek followers, note Lerner studied in London first under Hayek, then Keynes and Friedman. All 3 monetarists play a tweedle-dumb tweedle-dee battle, a step beyond Wonderland.

Ardern says climate crisis is ‘life or death’

That’s actually a true statement…. though not because there is a “climate crisis” but because of the foolhardy policies being pushed by true believers of the phony “climate crisis” (like Ardern).

MMT’s main tenets are that a government that issues its own fiat money:

1 Can pay for goods, services, and financial assets without a need to first collect money in the form of taxes or debt issuance in advance of such purchases;

True, but that’s only part of the story. The other part is that doing so ultimately leads to the devaluation of the money (meaning you’ll need more of it to purchase the same level of goods and services). Print too much money and you’ll end up in Weimar Germany.

2 Cannot be forced to default on debt denominated in its own currency;

Again, while technically true (instead of defaulting, you print all the currency needed to cover the debt) it has the same results as point #1 – the more you print the less valuable each unit of your currency becomes.

3 Is limited in its money creation and purchases only by inflation

Which, is a function of how much your money is worth (which is basically the sum total of the goods, labor, and other resources available in your economy). The more money you print, the less each unit of that money is worth.

It’s very simple: the total amount of currency you have represents the sum total value of your economy. When you print more, that means each unit of your currency will represent less of that total economic value.

Some illustrative numbers.

  • C (currency) = E (economic value)
  • given an economic value of 1000
  • and currency of 500 units

C(500 units) = E(1000) thus C(1 unit) = E(2)
If you double your units of currency for your same economy, you halve the economic value each unit represents.
C(1000 units) = E(1000) thus C(1 unit) = E(1)

What is New Zealand’s current electrical energy sector breakdown? Mostly fossil fuel? Mostly hydro? Nuclear? Wind? Solar?

The transport sector can reasonably be transitioned if there is enough electricity to every home to support two or more fast chargers (this is currently figured at least 100 amps (115 vac) per charger). Most homes in the United States would need service line upgrades for this and urban areas will have to be entirely re-wired.

Heating also, if there is enough dependable already-wired-to-homes electrical power and citizens can use “other people’s money” to make the transition.

Home cooking with electric will be OK, but commercial kitchens will kick up a fuss —

Does anyone on these commissions actually live a normal “man on the street” life (and live in New Zealand?) Do any of the commission members live in the countryside? Raise livestock? Understand New Zealand’s economy?

New offshore gas exploration permits have been banned, but what exists is still running.

The Huntly power station runs on gas & or coal but the Greens are pushing to phase out coal – now we are importing coal from Indonesia.

If you go to the top in this, um, relatively conservative centre-right libertarian blog, please note that here, the red-blue colours are reversed from what they would be in the US;- here, red is the socialist Labour govt, blue the National ‘conservative’ party.

New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern, is trying to blame the cows, for the constant brain farts, she is having, no comparison, give the cows a break!

Lack of individual transport in a sparsely populated country like NZ very likely will be a matter of life and death.

As will lack of cheap effective heating in the glacial extents of South Island.

Horse-face is a totalitarian monster on a massive power trip. But if that is what Kiwis want, they are going to have to live with the results of that choice.

It’s all very well for you lot to laugh.
I have to live in this country run by impractical virtue signalers.
My cousin has to try and keep the family farm profitable while these nutcases are trying to kneecap farmers. (Farming is a major source of NZ export income.)

Don’t know about NZ but today electric cars would be a little range- anxious in Australia, with half the country covered in snow ❄️

Good luck NZ. Hope you all have strong pedal power because that is the motive power your politicians want to leave you with. Oh – and plenty of winter gear coz it will be cold.
