NIMBY’s are making more noise than wind turbines

There is increasing concern that electricity generation from fossil fuels contributes to climate change and air pollution. In response to these concerns, governments around the world are encouraging the installation of intermittent electricity generation projects including Industrial Wind Turbines (IWT’s).

But Whoa, Nelly! NIMBY’s (Not-In-My-Backyard) around the globe from Germany to Australia, California, New York, and Massachusetts are speaking loudly, and acting, to put a halt to the invasion of noisy wind farms in their backyards. Following numerous reports from Maryland to Canada to France on wind turbine noise, the NIMBY’s are becoming energized (no pun intended).

  • The National Center for Biotechnology Information located in Bethesda, Maryland (NCBI) reported that industrial wind turbine noise amplitude modulation, audible low frequency noise, tonal noise, infrasound, and lack of nighttime abatement have been identified as plausible noise characteristics that could cause annoyance and other health effects. Documented symptoms reported by individuals exposed to wind turbines, include: Sleep disturbance, Headaches, Ear pressure, Dizziness, Vertigo, Nausea, Visual blurring, Irritability, Problems with concentration and memory, and Panic episodes associated with sensations of internal pulsation or quivering when awake or asleep.
  • The Green Energy Act (GEA) of Ontario, Canada may have been well-intended, but a recent analysis published by the Fraser Institute, Environmental and Economic Consequences of Ontario’s Green Energy Act, demonstrates that the GEA has had disastrous impacts on Ontario’s energy rates and is going to seriously threaten economic competitiveness for the manufacturing and mining sectors.
  • The French Academy of Medicine Declare Wind Turbines Health Nuisance. The planned extension of the terrestrial wind energy sector raises an increasing number of complaints from associations of local residents reporting functional disturbances achieving what is known as the “wind turbine syndrome”. The report notes that noise is the most frequent complaint. The noise is described as piercing, preoccupying, and continually surprising, as it is irregular in intensity. The noise includes grating and incongruous sounds that distract the attention or disturb rest. The spontaneous recurrence of these noises disturbs the sleep, suddenly awakening the subject when the wind rises and preventing the subject from going back to sleep.

Despite the political obsession for intermittent electricity generated from wind turbines, NIMBY’s are alive and well! Here is a sampling of NIMBY’s around the globe from Germany to Australia, California, New York, and Massachusetts that are stepping up to stop the installation of those monstrosities in their backyards:

  • In Germany, thousands are being driven mad by practically incessant, turbine generated low-frequency noise and infra-sound, and are fighting back with a fury and energy which has rattled the wind industry. There are now hundreds of anti-wind industry groups across Germany. And many of those groups and individuals have launched litigation against developers and government to either prevent wind farms from being built, or to seek substantial financial compensation for the loss of the use and enjoyment of their homes. In Germany, locals expressed their opposition in no uncertain terms – voting 25 to 1 against a giant wind project proposed for their patch of paradise.
  • In Australia and New Zealand, reports of adverse health effects and reduced quality of life are also documented in Industrial Wind Turbines (IWTs) projects in their countries.
  • In California, San Bernardino is the state’s largest county, and “has banned the construction of large solar and wind farms of more than 1 million acres of private land.” Residents do not want their rural desert community littered with renewables
  • In New York, America’s Rural Communities, like Arkwright, NY have gone on the offensive against big wind’s turbine onslaught. Andrew Cuomo, New York’s wind power obsessed Governor is determined to carpet his state with thousands of wind turbines. Faced with the threatened onslaught, and already fed up with what they have had to suffer, the upstate New Yorkers have taken matters into their own hands and produced a documentary about noise from local wind turbines.
  • In Massachusetts, the Town of Falmouth had documentation prior to the installations of its wind turbines that the megawatt wind turbines were too loud for residential locations. The documentation includes emails, maps, a written letter warning and an admission by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center in 2013 that “mistakes” were made in the original acoustic noise predictions. The first Falmouth wind turbine started operating in 2010. Ultimately the wind turbine installations in Falmouth are far worse than any experiment ever conducted in the United States as state and local officials always had first-hand knowledge of the damage to health and the requirement to take property with no compensation. State and local officials were following an agenda to achieve 2000 megawatts of commercial wind turbine power by the year 2020.

The list of the NIMBY resistance goes on and on at locations like New YorkWisconsin, and Scotland, etc.

Before too hastily pursuing those wind turbines for the generation of intermittent electricity, politicians should read the numerous published reports from Maryland to Canada to France about the effects of wind turbine noise, and listen to their NIMBY constituents that are rejecting those monstrosities in their backyards.

Articles about people complaining have been around for a decade yet wind turbines continue to be installed. Will it be another decade before complaints turn into action?

Another red flag about wind farms is the vast tracts of land required to set them up.

An remember, the author of Mein Kampf justified his expansionist military aggression on Germany’s need for “living space”

So stay alert Poland, France, Belgium, Netherlaands, Switzerland, Austria – your farmlands might be again required for Angela’s “living space” for all the windfarms she requires to get to net zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

Wind turbines are ineffective in reducing carbon, expensive, and a noisy eyesore They are primitive 16th Century technology which cannot replace reliable power generators. Other than that ….

I have no idea why they’re not using the helical vertical generators… they can operate at lower wind speeds because they catch much more of the wind, they can operate at higher wind speeds because you don’t have to worry about excessive blade-tip speed ripping the blades apart, they can have centripetal governors built into them that automatically splay the blades apart with excessive wind speed to limit maximum rotational rate, they’re much quieter than what’s being used now (stand 50 feet from one, and you wouldn’t even know it’s there from the sound), there’s no need for any ‘steering’ of the blades into the wind because it catches the wind no matter which direction it’s coming from, they don’t blend birds and bats into puree (they appear as a solid object to birds and bats, so they don’t fly into its blades)… perhaps someone is (or many someones are) getting a lot of kickback from the manufacturer of current type wind turbines?

For instance, this one is rated up to 120 MPH wind speed… that’d rip apart a traditional wind turbine:

Crony capitalism has been and still is the driver of solar & wind farms.
There are so many examples of superior technology, design & engineered products that got bugger-all market share because their promoters didn’t pick the right political / financial connections.

No, but it might do nearer 1.2Mw, which is closer to the everage size of the fan type as i understand it.

No, it will be in the 20-30 kW range…these are low to no output machines.

But they make great kinetic art.

The picture in the link shows the weslaco 005 helical savonious vertical wind turbine. It was a wind resource research project at the Weslaco Texas site. The turbine is located atop a 100-foot tower and is flanked by two 195-foot tall meteorological towers, which were installed in March 2008. –

Can’t find any results … so have to assume its yet another fail !!

That picture is quite interesting in that it shows one of the problems trying to combine wind and solar. Both technologies perform best with unobstructed access to the resource they are trying to collect, so in a rooftop installation, the shadow from the wind turbine seen encroaching on one of the panels will drastically reduce the power output from that string of panels. With so many turbines around the solar installation, there will usually be some shadow cast on the panels. Still, I guess they get double virtue points for trying both. Would be interesting to examine the solar generation data against times when shadows are cast across the panels.

The office building has some geothermal installations too, and gets more energy as it uses, is said.

The energy balance for 2011 compares a total for electricity consumption for geothermal energy for building heating and cooling of 43.92 MWh with electricity generation via PV and wind power of 55.05 MWh. This results in an electricity surplus of 11.13 MWh for pure building operation.

Quadruple Virtue points if they mount them in the outflow from a hydroelectric plant on its way to the source of cooling water for a nuke plant. Not only that they could even save money because then the solar and wind items wouldn’t have to be anything more than sculpture because the other things would generate so much more power anyway. I’m surprised nobody’s using hydroelectric or nukes to generate electricity.

There’s an ongoing case in the South of France where the authorisation to build was cancelled 3 times, and they still went ahead and built the ruddy things. They have already killed a Cinereous Vulture and 2 young Golden Eagles.

There is a lot of money at stake so lots is being spent on suppressing any medical evaluation of the effects of low frequency noise from windmills on the human body. If research does get published that proves the damage then it will open up a deluge of claims. Not all NIMBYism is bad as sometimes the proposals are ill thought out.

In Germany we have about 30.000 windturbines on land with a total installed capacity of 62 GW and 1450 windturbines offshore with 8 GW. Have a look at this graph:
(klick on the blue tab: “Letzten 7 Tage”)

No explanation so fare was given by the government, where the elctric power should come from in the near futur

Griff, you have plainly not researched ‘infrasound’, or the successful lawsuits stemming from it. You should do the research. The evidence is there. I will not do your homework for you. Google keywords infrasound problems. Grok the science.Read the lawsuits. Look at the jury verdicts.
Also, take your head out of the sand it is buried in, and learn. Otherwise you are as useless as the guy who said audio speakers are ac driven from the amp on my recent grid stability post, ignoring the absence of AC hummmmm.

So, you haven’t tried connecting DC to your speakers, have you Rud

Speakers work by oscillating about their center point, can’t do that with DC.

Maybe DC that is constantly switching polarity like a sine wave. 😉

And no, if the is no audio signal being sent, there is no AC signal, so no hum.

Again, hook up a 1.5V battery (DC) and see what happens to your loudspeaker drivers.

Just don’t do it for too long or you will let the smoke out of the speaker coil.

Download a program called “Audacity” (its free) and open up any sound file you like..

.. you will see that it is not DC, but very much vibrations above and below a central zero line.. ie AC

Here’s a bit of an aside, related tangentially. There is major construction occurring several blocks from me. They are rebuilding a shopping mall, among other things, and they are chopping through rock and using pile drivers. The work is far enough away from me that I don’t usually hear the banging, but I can hear what I would call low-frequency noise from the pile drivers. I can hear it/sense it while working in my basement office, thump thump thump, probably like the low-frequency noise from windmills. But unlike the windmills, the construction workers stop at night.

Local opposition can be easily bought off. “Here, take this money in exchange for shutting up. Or not, and see where that gets you, especially since your neighbors have already taken the deal”. Hey, the extra cost just winds up being paid by ratepayers and taxpayers, so, win-win.
It’s quite a racket.
