From Villanova University Media Room
VILLANOVA, Pa. —The Villanova University Ethics Program in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has named atmospheric scientist and well-known climate change advocate Michael E. Mann, PhD the recipient of the 2019 Praxis Award in Professional Ethics. This year’s award will be presented at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 11 in the Villanova Room, Connelly Center, followed by a lecture by Dr. Mann.
Since its inaugural year in 2007, the Praxis Award is given to a professional or academic who exemplifies the highest ethical ideals of their profession or who has contributed to professional ethics scholarship. Dr. Mann is considered a pioneer of climate change and has significantly contributed to the scientific understanding of temperature changes over the past thousand years. He is distinguished professor of Atmospheric Science at Penn State University, with joint appointments in the Department of Geosciences and the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute. He is also director of the Penn State Earth System Science Center.
Dr. Mann was a Lead Author on the Observed Climate Variability and Change chapter of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Third Scientific Assessment Report in 2001—which was among the IPCC’s many efforts that earned it the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He was organizing committee chair for the National Academy of Sciences’ Frontiers of Science in 2003 and has received a number of honors and awards, including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s outstanding publication award in 2002 and selection by Scientific American as one of the fifty leading visionaries in science and technology in 2002.
“The Ethics Program of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences recognizes Dr. Mann for his professional courage, his scientific work, his commitment to defend science against those who seek to politicize the findings of science, and his recognition that scientists do their work in the context of a global and independent reality,” said Mark Doorley, PhD, director of the Ethics Program. “We need science in order to navigate the challenges of that reality; and we need scientists to speak up, as Professor Mann has done—and continues to do—in the present moment.”
The Praxis Selection Committee reviews nominations annually, selecting a recipient who has accomplished one or more of the following achievements:
- Excellence in fulfilling and embodying the ethical ideals of a profession;
- Excellence in connecting professional work to a broader understanding of the common good;
- Excellence in promoting and embodying ethical integrity in a professional field;
- Excellence with respect to research in the field of professional ethics;
- Excellence in terms of influence on the field of professional ethics through writing, teaching, consulting and/or professional leadership.
The event is was free and open to the public.
Is he trusted buy 97% of the science community?
Then I do not trust the case they are preforming.
What the world needs now is awards for the top ten dumbest, most ironic and absurd awards.
This one would put Mann in the running along with Obama, Arafat, Al Gore and the IPCC’s Peace Prize.
“College of Liberal Arts and Sciences”?
There is good science and bad science, but no such thing as liberal science.
They fell for the ‘Im a nobel prize winner’ ruse.
An ethics award for utterly unethical if not fraudulent chicanery.
An other bung to avoid.
I guess they didnt watch fellow warming believer ( but ethical ) richard muller ‘s you tube lecture wherein he says he wont even read a paper with mann’s name on it , and why .
I just finished dinner as I read this..
seriously upset my digestion
what utter farce!!!!
hard pressed to think of a LESS deserving individual re ethics
So, I guess the way to be “ethical” is to misrepresent results, hide data, and to coerce others into suppressing a free exchange of ideas.
Who knew?
Doublespeak.
A “Professional Ethics” award for “Michael E. Mann”, surely you are yoking!
…
Fun Friday was yesterday, or is this Satirical Saturday?
I see that this university is the only Augustinian Catholic university in US and ranks about 50th in US. I had never heard of it and wondered how important it is in the scheme of things. Well apart from ranking let us have a look at its alumni. The only one I have heard of is Bradley Cooper – of course a renowned intellectual colossus.
Why waste time even considering this – it is primarily motivated by publicity for the university to attract the “intellectually inspired, morally grounded, globally minded” young people it claims make up its members.
I only want to know if this will help or hurt recruiting
The biggest ethical scoundrels are always given the most auspicious awards! Notice there isn’t a Nobel prize for science but if there were, Mann should get it every day! (It should be noted that Alfred Nobel was such a scoundrel that he dedicated the bulk of his estate to setting up the award to change the perception people had of him after he read an early obituary of his life that said “The merchant of death is dead”!) On second thought, I’m all in favor of Mann getting the award daily if people are reminded of the real, unflattering story of the award’s namesake!
Well personally I think Michael Mann is a worthy recipient of an award for practising liberal arts via such institutions. Generally speaking I find liberal artistes quite ethical in not trying to hide what they’re up to as it’s fairly obvious to any reasonable intelligence from their utterings and predictions compared to science and the scientific method.
Doomsday prophecies have a recurring emotional appeal it seems although you’d expect continually pushing out tipping points into the future would wear a bit thin at some stage.
Mann is anything but an artist! I see him more as Dr Strangelove! Mann’s vision of the future is anything but rosy!
Shouldn’t posts like this carry a health warning?
“The following article may cause loss of lunch”
If that smug grin gets any wider it’s gonna take the top of his head off.
The Monty Pythonian climate flying circus must go on !
This guy and the universities and media that support him deserve a collective Master clown Nobel Prize.
The Wayne Gretzky award would be more appropriate. /sarc
90 to 95% of American Universities closed their collective minds decades ago. Villanova is just another 3rd rate school with a basketball team. In the next 5 to 7 years enrollment is going to drop nationwide and many schools will close. Best news ever.
I predict that in 10 years time, if those who propose that the Sun is entering a Maunder-type or Little Ice Age type of activity which could result in crop losses and colder temperatures, then the warmist/alarmists might want to not show their faces in public. Any losses of lives from lack of correct infomation might boomerang on them, perhaps?
Got that covered Orville. Don’t you know that global warming makes it colder too? That’s why we have to call it “climate change” now.
This reminds me a bit of a similar situation with respect to Carl Sagan. I am not saying that Sagan had ethical issues, but an inordinate number of committees give him one award after another from say 1980-1990s or so. The more daft his stances on things, the more awards he collected. Finally, when the AAPT gave him the Oersted Medal in 1990 there was a letter to the editor of the American Journ. of Physics complaining that somewhere there must be someone working in the field of physics besides Sagan to give an award to. Michael Mann seems to garner an inordinate number of accolades, especially from folks who don’t know him.
Awards committees run with the herd just like all others. I note that the Oersted medal for the past three years has been given not to people who focus on physics or its teaching per se, but to those who write about the value of diversity, and expanding physics to a broader community of learners.
Is there an award given for the biggest liar and fraud on the planet? Because Mann would be a shoo-in for that.
Ethics redefined as doing anything and everything to support a political narrative no matter how far separated from reality. This is akin to awarding leadership of the UN committee on human rights to a war criminal, or giving an American president a Nobel Peace Prize simply for winning an election. Awards such as this often seen to be gifted out of sympathy, political agreement, or just plane malfeasance.
“Hi. My name is Michael Mann. You may call me ‘Doctor,’ or better yet, ‘Nobel Prize Winner Michael Mann, PhD.’ If you publicly contest the Nobel Prize part, I will sue you. If you say unflattering things about me, I will sue you. If you critique my science I will attack you personally and then sic my mob of True Believers on you.”
“Now ask me about my ethics.”
Somebody’s taking the piss!
Presenting an ethics award to Michael Mann is akin giving a medical research award to Jack the Ripper.
The same Michael Mann who could not be bothered to supply his source data?
The same Michael Mann who made a mash up of statistics to make his cherry picked results conform to his theory?
The same Michael Mann who calls people “denier” when they want to debate, or question his results?
The same Michael Mann who made the Medieval Warming Period disappear?
The same Michael Mann who sues his critics in order to silence them?
Michael Mann is a lot of things; but he is not a scientist, nor is he ethical.
Villanova has just managed to besmirch their own reputation by endorsing Dr. Mann for anything.
