Only 20,000 new jobs this month, the smallest number since September 2017, when hurricanes battered the country and a number of its territories, like Puerto Rico and the U.S.

February job gains were particularly poor when compared to January’s 311,000. One reason that economists have offered is the difference in weather. January was relatively mild, allowing an unexpected expansion, even as so many were furloughed from the federal government during the shutdown. February, for those who forget too soon, was quite cold for much of the country.

Even if February’s numbers don’t make a trend, there is a factor that keeps showing up. Weather. The month broke records for cold and heat and rain and snow. The hurricanes in 2017 were so bad, decimated areas still haven’t seen a full recovery and probably won’t for years.
Weather can have wild swings. Climate drives the variations and has a much longer horizon. Although there are people who want to believe that all the scientists are wrong and that nothing need be done, we’re already seeing the effects. It’s not just scientists. Insurance companies are the canary in the coal mine as they write the checks to cover the disasters and damage. Although the company denies playing down information, ExxonMobil reporetdly has known about climate changefor decades.

The more you think about it, the more you realize that a Green New Deal isn’t so impractical and unrealistic. Inaction is.

The only truth in the post is that people who work outdoors don’t work in sub zero weather. Often they collect unemployment for that week or weeks. ( how many did that would have been a productive path for Forbes to pursue.) Instead mindless fear-mongering with numerous false statements relating normal weather events to CO2.
Not true. Miners work outdoors in subzero weather and do NOT get the winter off, nor a week nor a day usually. Construction guys do, but NOT miners. They work in below zero temperatures because you can’t just shut down a mine and its equipment. My husband worked in -70F temperatures (because coal, uranium, etc don’t always occur in warm places—it’s often in the coldest, most remote places) and high wind. They rarely shut down for any reason. Miners might be snowed in overnight but that’s just way it is. Oil field is the same way (it does pick up some in warmer weather, slows some in colder, although right now I can find ads for a 100 or more openings in the oil field and it’s been below zero several times). In the real, productive world, people don’t get to not go to work because “It’s cold”. They have to deal with it and they do.
Construction is based on unemployment over the winter, it’s paid by the employer and it’s done so you don’t have to start over with a new crew every spring. That seems smarter than retraining on a yearly basis, but maybe not.
Why is my comment not true. I never said ALL works stops. Yet a great deal does. This is very true when exposed skin is subject to frost bite in minutes.

What exposed skin? People who work in this are not stupid. They wear gloves and other such gear. EMT’s, police, etc. I can’t think of a group where exposed skin is vital to the job and would preclude working in subzero weather.
I used to walk to night class in college in -70F wind chill. I’m not buying this.
Around 5 years ago, Forbes was notable for making the point that the natural-gas fracking revolution would pretty much take care of the US’s share of C02 emissions all by itself; a market-based solution I might add. This has by and large already come to fruition.
Articles like this make me extremely disappointed in Forbes, which I’ve always up to now respected. Even allowing for influences by the greenie-industrial complex, this is intentional misinformation, particularly the blaming of “climate change” for current weather vagaries.
The big picture is that nearly the entire “chattering class” is now completely and irrevocably detached from the ordinary reality and concerns of their working and business owning countrymen. Having no ability to run in 2020 on legitimate issues, they manufacture an endless stream of artifical, abstract “problems” only they can solve–because they created them.
I’m here to tell you that the LAST things working family men and women are worried about are abstractions like “intersectionality,” “unconscious bias,” and the lunacy that taxing the people will change the weather. Even the millennials are groaning under the weight of their student loans, under water before they even start. Jobs that pay a living wage are EVERYONE’S No. 1 priority–except those silly effete “top-out-of-sights” who’ve never actually had to work for a living. That’s why they’re resorting to ever more hysterical fear peddling. Trouble is, they only ever talk/read/listen to/watch each other!
It has become second nature accept the meme and talk about Climate Change i.e. Man burning fossil fuel as the principle ill upon which all things bad can be linked. The Crony Capitalists are the worst offenders, advancing this hoax by finding the profit angle.
I don’t know how we can recover from this. Since the Children have been conditioned to believe that the Emperor is fully clothed there is no one left standing to point out the obvious truth that the climate changes naturally always has always will.
But there is no money to be made with the truth.
His latest recommendation is STRONG BUY for all the DOPE Stocks. He believes Americans are stupid and wanna get stupider.
They’re just flinging linguini against the wall at this point, hoping a strand will form a silhouette of the Madonna – “Aha!” What a desperate, pointless existence, writing ever scarier predictions while John Q. Public grows more and more inured to their flapdoodle.

I think the proper word would have been “extrapolate.” In any case, My opinion, after reading this ridiculous piece, is that Mr. Sherman is not a very astute thinker.

No kidding! This should be GREAT NEWS! for the 1.06 deg. increase in the earth’s temperature (fever if you will). Isn’t that the proper medical protocol for runaway fevers? To immerse the patient in an ice bath? Al Gore should be THRILLED (not in a crazy sex poodles way) that Global Warming is CURING itself!! We’re SAVED! Quick, someone tell AOC!! When we stop the warming, then it will finally warm up a bit.
“Warmer” will improve the economy. Colder is just bad and miserable and raises costs (heating; lower mileage; snow removal…on and on…).
Since most (all actually) of the CO2 effect in the models is warming…I’m sure Forbes will have lots of articles about how great the warming will be for the economy.
There was NO talk the first 15 years of AGW about how rising CO2 would bring colder winters. Heck, the children were going to need to watch old videos to see what snow even looked like by now…YES, BY NOW.
Climate Change is a very widespread propaganda program.
Fortunately it’s still not getting much traction amongst the public…unfortunately, the public still isn’t concerned about rising costs and loss of freedoms. The GND will probably help with that.

To be fair, judging by the extract above, the guy didn’t say it was man’s fault. He just kind of inferred it.
Being an optimist, I think it’s a step in the right direction.

I think its a pretty fair assumption Erik is talking about AGW, and it seems a safe assumption that negative mentions of climate change and Exxon Mobil infers he means anthropogenic climate change.

Inferences are fine, but this blog is about evidence. Not that I disagree with you, the article clearly appeals to the climate faithful, but like I said, perhaps it’s a step in the right direction that the blame isn’t overtly directed at man.
I think we sceptics have to be careful not to be drawn into the trap of subjectivity and suggestion. Easily done, but it’s also important to recognise small victories.
I have noticed a few other recent posts elsewhere that are much the same.
But I’m an optimist, perhaps it’s just me.

Your sceptical bias may influence you to interpret that the guy said it, but he didn’t, he merely inferred it and you, like the alarmists, fell for it hook line and sinker.

HotScot, All I am saying is that reconsidering the New Green Deal, an insane proposal based on CAGW dogma, is certainly the equivalent of

Also, I never said you were an alarmist, but I did say the Forbes author, in his giving validity to the Green New deal, is a radical CAGW supporter. ( a distinction without a difference)

Forbes is traditionally an economic magazine in support of capitalism. The author caters here to the “New Green Deal”

I believe it’s more a symptom of the almost ubiquitous use of “Climate Change” to represent “Catastrophic Anthropological Global Warming”. You know, that phrase now designated as a ‘Snarl Phrase’ used by Evil Deniers.
The references to ‘Exxon Knew’ and the Green Leap Forward (GND) make this abundantly clear. I see no steps in the right direction here.

Reread the last paragtaph HotScot. What is 5he action it is clamoring for? Yeah, its got to 5he point 5hat 5hey no longer hsve yo rrpeat its our fault.
What happens if we reduce the CO2 permanently with renewable energy and electric cars. Using this logic the summers would get colder and the winters would get warmer. That will reduce CO2 emissions by 100%. We have developed ways of burning coal and natural gas with no emissions, and a way to produce Alberta Bitumen with no emissions so that it is 40-45% lower than any other oil in the world. That would have reduced global emissions by 85.7% if we needed to but with hydrocarbons we can adjust the CO2 level anywhere they claim it needs to be.

Thinking a little more about it, from the correspondent’s perspective, It’s easy to deny being hysterically climate change partisan when someone points to this article accusing him of same, by just saying “I didn’t say it was man that was the problem” because of course, he didn’t say it was.

I think it would be pretty difficult to recast the Forbes article as being about natural climate change, more likely the author assumed everyone would know what he meant, so I think it is premature to suggest this is evidence they are trying to back away from their CAGW positions. But yes it is interesting.

The Great Depression was horrible. I wouldn’t wish that kind of experience on anyone. Right now, we’re as close to full employment as it gets. There is no similarity.

What CO2 are we reducing? Atmospheric or otherwise? That in the oceans perhaps?
What is the definition of “permanently”? I’m not sure that’s possible unless the atmosphere suddenly abandoned the planet. Even then……..
I’m a layman so, again, forgive my ignorance but my perception is that with increased atmospheric CO2 the whole world would heat up. Therefore, if we reduce atmospheric CO2 were reduced, the whole world would cool. The alarmists don’t seem to distinguish between winter and summer.
As every organism on the planet won’t stop the production of CO2 I don’t think there is any way CO2 emissions could be reduced by 100%. The oceans are a bit of a problem in that respect as well.
I’d be interested to see the coal and natural gas burning facilities that produce no emissions.
I suspect extracting Alberta Bitumen takes considerable effort. I would be surprised if all the machinery involved didn’t produce emissions, CO2 or otherwise.
I can’t figure out your last sentence. Are you saying that if the world used Alberta Bitumen we would reduce atmospheric CO2 emissions by 85.7%?

My perception of climate alarmism is that with increased atmospheric CO2 etc……
My perception is that increased atmospheric CO2 would have little to no effect on the planets temperature because it has never been empirically demonstrated it does.
You got it close to right. If all of the coal fired power plants and natural gas fired power plants use technology that reduces their emissions to zero, and Alberta Deasphalted Bitumen is the only oil produced in the world for about 60 years, we would only have 14.3% of the man made CO2 emissions we have today. That should take us back to about 1765 emissions.
I think every year is getting colder since about 2017, I do not believe CO@ur momisugly has much to do with anything but plant growth. Bt the solar and wind people started that because they did not believe anyone could make coal clean burning.
God put the coal on earth. He guided my carrer from day 1 until today so that I owuld know how to do it. And I do.
