Open Thread – trying out a new comment system

Hello,

Now that the move has been successful, I’m trying out a new commenting system plugin called WPDISCUZ.

You can read more about it here. https://wpdiscuz.com/

The original comment editor I installed last week didn’t work properly for everyone, and it screwed up comment indentation, so I had to disable it.

Try it out, leave a comment, leave a comment rating, try the sort features, etc. You can edit a comment up to 15 minutes after making it.

You can also visit another thread to see how it looks with many comments already in place.

-Anthony

UPDATE: I think I have the “reply” in nested comments working, and the EDIT function working properly. Also, the good news is that once you put in your name and email, it should always remember you….at least that is what I’m told by the documentation.

The bad news: General comment form is at the top, and there appears to be no way to change it according to this thread:

https://gvectors.com/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting/remove-the-comment-form-to-below-comments/#post-3911

So, just use it for a general comment about the article, or scroll down and reply to an existing comment.

UPDATE2: You can display an image (or YouTube video) within a comment, (see examples in the thread below) but you MUST use https rather than http. Just simply insert the image URL, no tags or HTML needed.

If you use http all you’ll get is a link, but no embedded image.

Feel free to play around with inserting images or video in comments below.

When it flags a comment for moderation (“Comment awaiting moderation”) the warning flag it’s nice and visible — but there’s no “edit” button. (There’s also no “reply” button, but that’s reasonable.)

Ah yes, was going to mention that. I think my comment in currently waiting moderation. But I can’t find it. Probably way down below after I hit the ‘Load More Comments’ button! Hmm, dunno if I like that either.

I couldn’t comment on regular threads after the update–I kept getting a server 500 error. I wonder if I can succeed with this comment.

(Hey! Success!!! And I can edit too!)

So the “invisible link” problem is apparently not specific to twitter links. It’s all links.

To the person who posted a comment, the links in his own comment are invisible, though they still work when clicked. Here’s a screenshot of this comment:

comment image

But if you “select” them, they’re really there:

And for everyone else the links are visible, except that they disappear when hovered over with the mouse (view in a “Private” or “Incognito” window to see this behavior in your own comments):

Hmm… I think the difference isn’t “your own” vs. “other people.” I think the difference might be “visited” vs. “not visited.” The “visited” links are white-on-white (invisible).

And the mouseovered unvisited links.

Just a few stylesheet changes.

I see that this problem is now resolved.

Ok, here goes. Posting with a new pseudonym. Hope it works! Last comment I made yesterday, I tried to edit, but alas, no edit function! ABC 123

Fashionably late to the party……..as ever.

Already in moderation!

Moderated……No more.

Lets see if replying to my own comment does anything.

Ooooooooooo…….Look. I can edit!

Not sure I like the edit function, much more fun deciphering peoples digit malfunctions.

Editing again.

Does anyone know if the edit function rolls over. i.e. If my first edit allows 15 minutes, if I go in and edit again, does it reset the clock?

Stupid question?

hot scot,
I dont think it resets the clock but seems that you can do as many ‘edits’ as you want until the clock runs out. The real kicker is that your posted comment is visible on the WUWT page while you are editing and then changes after you save it after edit. Fun part is you can make the WUWT page visible comment keep changing for those viewing your comment! Cuttlefish got nothing on the edit function!

I think generally the system is better than it ever was with a few exceptions.

1. The inability to post images or videos directly is a huge loss.
2. The formatting style sheet I would personally like to see fine tuned.
For example
(a) the default ‘blue’ colour in WUWT is rgb(17, 123, 184) but in the comments it’s a wishy washy (to me) rgb(0, 179, 143)….
(b) Also the font size changes a shade too much from comment to reply.
(c) The blockquote style is just an indent rather than a nice shaded box.

But the ability to edit is a massive massive improvement for someone like myself whose typing skills are very low.

If only we could post pictures and graphs…and videos

Scrolling down do images now work?

I cant make images work

What is the trick?

Ok. needs https which means that about 90% of the images on the ‘net cant be posted

Otherwise you get an invisible but clickable link.

I really dislike this format – I think the font is too light and small and it gets even smaller for the strangely inset secondary contributions. Please remember not everyone has 20/20 vision.

But happy to stick with the hard work you are putting in to get things improved and appreciative of your websit and efforts.

Had some problems getting my steam powered computer to let me see the new site but all seems well now and am trying leaving a comment so if you hear a loud explosion from South East England you know it didn’t go well.

Problems with hrefs “disapperaing” ( actually displayed as white ) are likely caused by the CSS

In your custom css file lines 255 to 265 are

/* special case for the site’s mast head */
.site-title a, a:hover, a:visited {
color: white;
text-decoration: none;
}

/* special case for the site’s main menus */
.menu a, a:hover, a:visited {
color: white;
text-decoration: none;
}

probably should be

/* special case for the site’s mast head */
.site-title a, .site-title a:hover, .site-title a:visited {
color: white;
text-decoration: none;
}

/* special case for the site’s main menus */
.menu a, .menu a:hover, .menu a:visited {
color: white;
text-decoration: none;
}

Not an expert in this so might be wrong!

Anthony ==> I like the “Read More….” feature — it solves the problem of “essay-length” comments pushing other comments way off the bottom of the page and taking lots of PgDn’s to get past.

I also like that the original comments are easily distinguished from the replies to them — easier to identify the threads.
