Dr. Katharine Hayhoe tries to scare Canadians with threats of warmer temperatures

Mass Public Indoctrination Program on Climate Change Introduced in ‘Alberta Narratives’ During Calgary Climate Symposium

By Michelle Stirling and Trevor Marr

CALGARY, Alberta, Canada

As the IPCC Cities Conference progressed in Alberta’s capitol city of Edmonton, March 5-8, 2018, Canada’s energy center was not going to be left out.  The Calgary Climate Change Symposium featured “Climate George” – George Marshall, activist and author of the UK, and Dr. Katharine Hayhoe of the Political Sciences department at Texas Tech University.

clip_image002
“Climate George” demonstrates a sleight of hand – why talk facts and evidence on climate change when moving personal stories about how your house flooded are so effective?

Marshall introduced the idea that it was too difficult to talk about climate change because it was such a polarizing issue, suggesting that conversations would immediately turn to talk about the spinach tart at dinner rather than the climate ‘crisis.’  The conversation would be especially difficult in Alberta where so many jobs rely on oil, gas and coal, he intimated.

Marshall noted that his background is in the social sciences and that facts and evidence just turn people off – so the way to go is to have people tell personal stories of how climate change has affected their lives.

There was some interactive play in the audience, where audience members were asked to turn to total strangers near them and explain to each other how climate change affected them and what were their worst fears.  The 2013 catastrophic flood of Calgary’s downtown core was suggested as a topic – and there was a certain romantic attachment expressed about how Calgarians were SO kind and compassionate to each other in that time of distress and devastation.

Indeed, the 2013 flood in Calgary was NOT a climate change event, but a weather event.  Flooding in Calgary is common, and as Roger Pielke, Jr. pointed out in his 2005 paper “Misdefining ‘‘climate change’’: consequences for science and action” – there is no ‘danger’ from flooding if people don’t build on a flood plain, as has been done in Calgary.

clip_image004
Dr. Katharine Hayhoe likes to ask audiences how many have experienced ‘global weirding’? Hands up!

Dr. Hayhoe then charmed the audience with her folksy presentation telling us how her mother’s tulips were coming up in March instead of April and how this had never happened in all the time she was growing up in Ontario.  This would normally be termed an anecdotal commentary, not scientific evidence, but this is the path the “Alberta Narrative” has taken.

Earlier in the day, Dr. Hayhoe had mocked Friends of Science Society in a most un-Christian-like way, though she admitted she liked our billboards.

clip_image005

clip_image006
Friends of Science Society billboard across from the Edmonton, Alberta Shaw Conference centre, site of IPCC Cities Conference.

Dr. Hayhoe presented graphs and maps showing Albertans that there were averages of weather stations and there were trends that showed warming.  These were largely indecipherable to the audience but just throw a little red on there – even the one representing more snow – and people will be sufficiently alarmed.

clip_image008
A terrifying shade of red seems to envelope Alberta – which is often -40C/F for days in winter and which saw extremely high temperatures in the Great Depression…but of course that was then and this is now. And downscale modelled!

Likewise, Dr. Hayhoe said Alberta’s winters were good because they kept nasty bugs, insects and poisonous snakes away from Alberta.  Likewise, noxious weeds like kudzu, which she said cannot take root in any region with extremely low winter temperatures but has been found in Ontario.  http://www.inspection.gc.ca/plants/plant-pests-invasive-species/invasive-plants/fact-sheets/kudzu/eng/1331750489827/1331750551292 This was apparently meant to show that Ontario is warmer than ever.  (Note – in fact there are poisonous snakes in Alberta in the Medicine Hat region.  Odd that almost all ‘snowbirds’ – aka: Canadian winter vacation escapees – love to go to places that have many poisonous snakes.  That does not seem to be a deterrent for sun-seekers. But back to science.)

Dr. Hayhoe also showed how her ‘downscale’ modelling could help cities forecast the need for larger pipes for infrastructure in the event of future flooding – but not too large.  That would cost too much.

clip_image010
Earlier in Dr. Hayhoe’s presentations she notes that the climate has been stable until now.

Following these power point displays of graphs, maps and a rear view mirror, telling us we could not look back while society drove forward because we would drive off the curve on the climate change highway, Marshall and Hayhoe said there would be a province-wide campaign just like this one, to go to dozens of communities and get hundreds of people telling their ‘Alberta Narrative” about how climate change has affected them.

http://www.aenweb.ca/delegates/alberta-narrative-project

Power Point:

http://www.aenweb.ca/files/ab_narratives_project_overview_invitation_deadline_feb_14.pdf

Both seemed to express some sadness that the oil, gas and coal workers in Alberta should ‘be treated respectfully’ as they are about to be replaced by wind and solar generation – which was really the thrust of the Marshall-Hayhoe event.

Marshall had shown a map of Canada made by Yale Climate Connection, indicating that Albertans were less inclined to ‘believe’ in climate change – and several graphs that indicated this was due to either being conservatives or Christian.  Dr. Hayhoe later discussed how she often spoke to faith groups.

Neither seemed to know that most of Alberta’s resistance to the idiotic Alberta Climate Plan is that there are over 70,000 Professional Engineers and Geosciences who are part of Alberta’s professional sector.  Most of these science professionals are well aware of the climate modelling fiascos, the iffy data, and the torrid claims about climate change that are nothing compared to earth’s own ‘active planet.’

In other words, Albertans judge climate catastrophe claims on the evidence, facts and data, not on the anecdotal stories of foreigners who are trying to boondoggle Albertans out of billions of dollars for ineffective wind and solar.

In closing, Mayor Nenshi spoke, thanking the Rockefeller Foundation for the “Cities” person who is now part of City Hall staff and saying that there was a prepared speech which he was required to read. This seemed a bit odd as the Mayor is a very capable public speaker.

One wonders who paid for it all – including the catered reception – and just how shafted will Albertans be as this climateering train wreck runs its course.  The present tab on coal phase-out and the early implementation of more wind and solar is already about $30 billion in costs.

Now THERE’S an Alberta Narrative.

One P. Engineer who attended had this to say:

I attended the Calgary Climate Symposium last night at Telus Spark with keynote speakers George Marshall from UK and Katherine Hayhoe now from the USA. There was plenty of hype, drama, fearmongering, telling us to Prepare for the Changes, calls for ‘conversation’ and it was more of a UN propaganda, fabricated goose-stepped indoctrination into an Orwellian 1984 manipulation (or should I say People-ipulation?).

In the parking lot after the thought control session I asked the respectful, pleasant Ms. Hayhoe the definition of the Climate Change? And her definition included Natural causes, but she looked me in the eye and said we should now be heading into an Ice Age, but we are not, because of Fossil Fuels killing our climate with CO2! I said that is a Good Thing, as we were shivering in a frozen (-20C) and 3′ deep, snowy parking lot as she was telling me we were perilously warming the Planet!

I was trying not to laugh! Actually, I was too cold to laugh! I reminded her of the fact that we used to be covered in 2km of Ice and Snow during the Ice Age and I asked her ‘What Caused THAT? Caveman SUV’s?’ And she said that today is different!?! She asked me to look at her web site for more convincing info to support her concern for “PeopleKind,” I will look at it ASAP!

UPDATE: This slide from her presentation pretty much says it all. Reality vs. predictions – reality wins.

As an graduate of the fine University of Texas Tech class of 1970 with a degree in Electrical Engineering I’m a bit ashamed the Ms. Hayhoe is associated with the University of Texas Tech in any capacity. I’m hoping she didn’t get that Doctorate Degree at Texas Tech.

“One wonders who paid for it all – including the catered reception…” It would be interesting to find that out. Industrial scale wind proponents lured leaseholders in Ontario similarly. Al Gore came to Ontario and whipped everyone into a frightened frenzy to make sure that all would submit to the incursion into rural communities.

The local weatherman can not even get the weekend forecast accurate within 2deg C! So telling us that they predict ANYTHING with accuracy 100yrs into the future is a very weak fortune cookie guess! I have an idea, rather than committing to a ctrl-alt-del of the World’s established energy infrastructure, let’s base Policy on 5 year increments of Reality! Reality is not mapping to the 100yr prediction already!
In fact, CO2 is GREENING the Earth, increasing food production and it can be said that the only negative to a 1part per MILLION fluctuation in Global Average CO2, is the HUGE DECREASE in the IQ of Climate Scientists and the Leftist Liberal Democrats (BTW what is the Level of Accuracy on measuring 1part per MILLION?).
The Climate is doing NOTHING out of the Ordinary! The Climate has been Warmer, it has been Cooler, it has been Wetter, it has bee Drier, there is no increase in storms, in fact the number of Category 5 Hurricanes has decreased, so perhaps the CO2 reduces Hurricane intensity? We must remember the Earth has gone Warmer (Warming Periods) and Cooler (Ice Ages) with or without Man or Man Made CO2! The Climate of the Earth fluctuates, trends up, trends down, because we are a living and breathing, ALIVE Planet! The year that the Earth’s Climate Stops Changing, will mean the Earth is Dead! Thank God for Climate Change!
Yes it is true, AGW has now been redefined to stand for Al Gore’s Wrong!!! So are Kathy and George!!! They did not fool Donald T, but Justin T, Catherine M, Rachel N are VOID of reality!

According to the paleoclimate record and the work done with models, one can conclude that the climate change we are experiencing today is caused by the sun and the oceans over which mankind has no control. There is no real evidence that CO2 has any effect on climate and plenty of scientific rational to support the idea that the climate sensivity of CO2 is zero. Climate change has been going on for eons and will continue to go on whether mankind is here or not. The climate change we have been experiencing is so small that it takes a network of sophisticated sensors, decades to even detect it. One must not confuse true climate change with weather cycles which are part of the current climate. Even if mankind could somehow stop the climate from changing, extreme weather events and sea level rise would continue because they are part of the current climate. I would thing that warming would favor Canada since it is such a cold place to begin with. Spending more on infrastructure that will help protect people from the ravages of weather may be a good idea but trying to fight climate change is just a total waste of time and money.

It’s amazing how these so called “climate experts” have talked themselves into such gloom and doom scenarios for the planet and now go round preaching like evangelists. But if they believe their own twisted models and don’t apply common sense then what can you expect. Wasn’t the old computer expression “Garbage in, garbage out”!!

“Dr. Hayhoe then charmed the audience with her folksy presentation telling us how her mother’s tulips were coming up in March instead of April and how this had never happened in all the time she was growing up in Ontario. This would normally be termed an anecdotal commentary, not scientific evidence, but this is the path the “Alberta Narrative” has taken.”

A definitive not-innocent lie!
As Lance and others have pointed out, Hayhoe’s flower claims are bogus.

“Earlier in the day, Dr. Hayhoe had mocked Friends of Science Society in a most un-Christian-like way, though she admitted she liked our billboards”

Since the signs simply point out that science is about inquiry; that illustrates rather well that Kayhoe is against inquiry and therefore against proper science.

“Likewise, Dr. Hayhoe said Alberta’s winters were good because they kept nasty bugs, insects and poisonous snakes away from Alberta. Likewise, noxious weeds like kudzu, which she said cannot take root in any region with extremely low winter temperatures but has been found in Ontario”

Gross assumptions that demonstrate Kayhoe’s cause/effect abuse of science.

“Dr. Hayhoe also showed how her ‘downscale’ modelling could help cities forecast the need for larger pipes for infrastructure in the event of future flooding – but not too large. That would cost too much”

Kayhoe directly implies that city planning engineers are unable to calculate necessary drainage systems.
The Kayhoe, promptly applies the classic developer response and minimizing required pipe and drainage by purposely underestimating rainfall amounts and frequencies.
Of course, city planners should believe a climate activist rather than engineers…

“Following these power point displays of graphs, maps and a rear view mirror, telling us we could not look back while society drove forward because we would drive off the curve on the climate change highway, Marshall and Hayhoe said there would be a province-wide campaign just like this one, to go to dozens of communities and get hundreds of people telling their ‘Alberta Narrative” about how climate change has affected them”

Ignore the past and ramp up emotional impact, then have people “testify” for their salvation.
Classic religion and condemnation without any science.
Katharine Hayhoe gives science and scientists a bad name and should be ashamed.

This is very worrisome for Calgarians as we know what this kind of funding means… In Vancouver for instance as documented in detail by Vivian Krause
http://fairquestions.typepad.com/rethink_campaigns/
In particular the ever so close relationship between Tides and the campaign of Vancouver’s Oh so green Mayor Greg Robertson…

No, one should not say “people-ipulation” instead of “manipulation”: the Latin root is “manus” (4th declension feminine noun) meaning “hand”. Nothing to do with the Anglo-Saxon “man”. I’m all in favour of using non-sexist terms like “chairperson”, “police officer” and “firefighter”, but fake etymology is a bane. “Herstory” for “history of women” is the classic case: “history” has the Greek root ίστημι, “histemi”, meaning to establish or set up: nothing to do with Anglo-Saxon possessive adjective “his”.

I just checked: “manipulus” in Latin means “handful”, and also a group of soldiers, one third of a cohort, which is 360 soldiers, so the “maniple” is 120 soldiers. I knew the “manus” root was right, but was trying to think of a verb as root for the other part. Wrong! Anyway, the “hand” meaning makes sense of the basic meaning of the word, as in “She manipulated the controls of the combine harvester with skill.” Hope y’all are not distracted by this.

The subject of Science:
Follow this link – its very slick and some attractive women (am I allowed to say that?) are trying to sell something. All above board.
It may be something very interesting anyway, seeing as how we are all going to be engulfed by an avalanche of extra food calories in the coming years. Not least as how we are all so rich and intelligent.
Of course, no-one says what form those calories are in – sugar, fat or protein.
All you need to endure are the first 15 minutes – does anything they’re talking about in there sound familiar?

Something very serious to ponder ff those girls are correct.
Innit?

Climate advocacy science as entered the duality phase of warmer and colder in the same region depending on when or if you look at it. For the same region we have Hayhoe saying warming and the following from Rutgers explaining colder caused by climate change also for the same region. At least with quantum physics duality the strangeness led to the electronics revolution and quantum computers in due time. With advocacy climate science we just get wasted time.

“… winters were good because they kept nasty bugs …”
I am an agro-climatologist
At one of the meetings (in my country), it was warned that – as a result of warming – a new insect pest Diabrotica virgifera (western corn rootworm) would be dangerous.
I asked a simple question: where is the higher profitability (yields)? In countries with a warm climate (where is the western corn rootworm) or in my (cool) country?
There was silence in the room …
Cold winters – versus insect pests.
The truth is: frosts destroy mostly weakened (eg with parasites, diseases) insect pests. And natural enemies of insect pests. Pests (after cold winters) are few, of course, but can fully realize their – insect pest, reproductive potential. This is why after the cold winters (especially pests of several generations in the growing season) the majority of insect pests, have disastrous gradations. No frost winter = no gradiations. The oscillatory model – equation L.-V. will operate.
And as a result of IPCC global warming – the “Business as usual” scenario, GDP – Budget of Canada is expected to increase by around 100% (for one person – http://naukaoklimacie.pl/cdn/upload/56ee8403d66c4_procentowe-zmiany-pkb-w-roznych-krajach-w-scenariuszu-biznes-jak-zwykle.png – sorry for the Polish version).
The knowledge of the supporters of the catastrophic version of AGW, is so often (too often): “an embarrassing.”

Read the news, that is exactly what our NDP (read socialist) government in Alberta and our LIberal (read leftist money wasters) Canadian government are proposing to impose on us.
I have nothing against a little wind or solar being added to the mix or even to them being lightly subsidized as startups.
What I really can’t stomach is the arbitrary and forced shutdown of perfectly good world class coal-fired plants or the ridiculous carbon taxes meant to put fossil fuels at a disadvantage.
The next step could be to tax food directly (it is already taxed indirectly through the carbon tax) on the justification that we are farting out too much CO2.
