This is a puzzle. Why are we so willing to gamble thus with the fate of human civilization, with 95 percent certainty of catastrophe? Is it that we’re in denial? Are we just repressing a reality that’s too traumatic to confront? Yes, probably. But it’s also something much simpler: a geography problem.
The great irony of global warming is that its causes and consequences are inversely distributed. The rich nations of the global North are responsible for 70 percent of historical CO2 emissions, but they bear only about 18 percent of the total costs. It’s the South that takes the hit: according to the Climate Vulnerability Monitor, the global South loses nearly $600bn each year due to drought, floods, landslides, storms and wildfires. As climate change worsens, their losses will reach a staggering $1 trillion per year by 2030.

The solution is simple, at least conceptually: open the borders. By tearing down the walls that separate the causes and consequences of climate change we can force a more honest reckoning with reality. Once the victims of climate change have the right to seek refuge in Europe and North America, it will obliterate the moral hazard of global warming. As rich nations finally start to feel the heat, so to speak, you can bet they’ll act fast, doing everything in their power to ensure that people’s home regions remain livable. Even if it means pushing for a new, more ecological, economic model.
This might seem unrealistic at a time of rising anti-immigrant sentiment. But either we do it now, finding orderly ways to integrate climate refugees and allowing ourselves to be spurred to action by the suffering we’re forced to confront, or down the road, we’re going to face a refugee crisis more severe, violent and destabilising than anything we can imagine. We have a choice.

I remember reading some assertions from people actually working with refugees saying that anyone who thought they could “pass” as Syrian was claiming to be from Syria, because they believed they were more likely to get to stay. So you had people who were really from Africa, South Asia, and other Middle Eastern countries who were “Syrian”, according to their applications.
I suspect that there were a lot fewer actual Syrians arriving during that period.

When we think of propaganda in the U.S., most of us, immediately think of Russia. And rightly so, but there is another propaganda threat that is spreading around the planet, with all those refugees.
The refugees themselves are a by-product of Islamic extremism. Extremism and terror are used to propagate Islam.

Al Jazeera, is mostly staffed by members of the ‘Muslim Brotherhood.’ It is, an Islamic propaganda machine.
The biggest threat to our freedoms here in the U.S. is political Islam. The goal of the faithful followers of Islam even at the refugee level is too, establish a population base,(they don’t believe in birth control) which is used to spread political Islamic ideology.
They establish parallel societies within the countries they go to. They try to establish sharia law as their law within those societies, not the laws of the country they are in. This is historically true and is occurring NOW in Europe and other areas around the planet.

My apology to those WUWT persons living along in southern border states. You may view the refugee/migrant threat differently.
It is not climate change that brings the flowing migrants across our southern borders but, drug cartel extremism, terrorrism, corruption in government. Those drug cartel terrorists are linked to Hezbollah, one of the largest (if not thee largest) drug, human, money, goods traffickers on the planet. Migrant flowing across the southern border are primarily from Mexico, Central and South America. But also they come from North Africa and the Middle East. Large terrorist organizations use our porous southern border to smuggle radical Islamics as well as arms and drugs. Drugs are trafficked worldwide for financial support of these terrorist groups.

Absolutely correct. You don’t see tens of thousands of Costa Rican’s trying to leave the country because of climate change or global warming. In fact they have volcanoes and earthquakes, and it is very hot there too. If anything, the world is visiting Costa Rica at a very significant rate and many actually move there to retire with a residency permit for a small investment in the country. Costa Rica is one CentroAmerican country that actually really has its act together and the facts bear that out. Other Latin American countries should follow this model how a sovereign country can manage its affairs better.
It is is either some type of political Marxism, Authoritarianism or some type or religious extremism that leads to mass emigration out of a country, like the Middle East in the case of war torn conflicts and religious extremism. Or usually because of severe economic impairment such as Venezuela, Cuba or how other countries like in the civil wars in the 1980’s like El Salvador, Nicaragua and Guatemala were traumatized to this very day, and are having a hard time pulling up their own socks to make something of themselves. It is now going in the right direction but happening very slowly. And then a place like Mexico which can’t get its act together to control corruption and crime. Don’t blame global warming and/or climate issues for these obvious other reasons for emigration, including over population issues. And dozen’s of other reasons too many to list. But nothing to do with so called CAGW causing mass migrations.
The demise of Western Civilization in Europe has already been inexorably set in motion, not by Global Warming, but rather by government sanctioned Islamafication.
30 million Muslims currently reside in Europe (excluding Turkey), which will soon exceed 60+million by 2050.
The Islamafication of Europe was narrowly avoided twice in European history by two major victories: first, at the Battle of Tours in 732, and second during the Seige of Vienna in 1539, both of these events saved Western Civilization and led directly to the incredible freedoms, technologies, scientific and medical advancements, literature, music, art, and the astounding lifestyles we currently enjoy and take for granted.
Western Civilization had a nice 2800 year run, and I’m glad I won’t be around to witness its inevitable decline and fall.

They do want to increase their connectivity with the “useful idiots” and “fellow travelers” in the West; making them believe they are of like mind about such things. They want to give the Left another reason to support open borders. All Al Jazeera only desires is to spread radical Islam as is required by all “good” Muslims. The Islamists have clearly stated that they see two ways of defeating the West without fighting, by immigration and by birth rate. Open borders spreads that process. Remember that ISIS and al Qaeda already have a foothold in South America. As we tried to defeat them in SW Asia and the Middle East they have metastasized around the world. The reason they include China and India as developed countries it that the first is brutally tough on radical Islamists while the second is what they consider to be traditional Muslim lands presently ruled by Hindus.
Equatorial regions experience little to no warming. They shift the heat poleward. Seemingly, the SH experiences little warming. It is precisely the Arctic which seems to get it all. Ergo, by theory, the industrial nations are under the greatest threat, if any such threat were to come along. Waiting to see seems prudent.
NGOs are the new Colonial Masters who decide what happens to poor tropical/subtropical countries whose problems would otherwise be easily solved in this modern age. Will these much put upon people’s ever be free? Biting the hands that are extended to them would be a good start.

According to the list from the site below, China is number one emitter. Included in the top ten are Saudi Arabia and Iran. Yet Saudi Arabia, a rich country, doesn’t allow refugees to live in their country. They would rather build mosques in Europe and U.S. and supply them with imams to further Islamafication around the world.

I feel horribly for people who are stuck in countries that are terrible places to live. And I do think that when possible, asylum should be made available to those who are MOST vulnerable, like the Yazidis. I read accounts of what was done (is being done) to the women, and I think the perpetrators should all be bombed into oblivion. Get THEM out of the hellholes and bring them to safety.
But let’s be real. ISIS is not gang raping Yazidi/Christian/minority-religion-following women and selling them into sexual slavery over and over and over again because CO2 went up “x” ppm. Slightly increased temperatures are not the reason Afghani women are being brutalized or killed if their wristbone peaks out of their burka or whatever.
As for the “economic” “refugees”, I feel less sympathy. While life sucks where they live, they are not really in imminent danger. Also, if people can scrounge up hundreds of dollars to pay someone to float them across the Mediterranean (often multiple times), I have a hard time believing survival is not possible.
Regardless of actual issues, if you take AGW as real (stay with me), Hickel’s argument is self-defeating. If “refugees” all come to rich countries, they will start using more resources and generating more CO2. Gaia will die even faster!

Al Jazerra is a mouthpiece of the Qatari government…..in Arabic. But the English-language version is (apparently) fairly balanced. Apparently it excoriates the other governments of the area (though the Qatari government is immune to such attacks).
As for refugees, do any Americans hear the news of several hundred innocent people killed by the forces of al-Assad and the Russians? We in Canada do, and I fear for 300,000-400,000 Syrians who are unable to escape and who are denied food and water.
Unlike many people here, I have known Muslims on a personal level.They wanted nothing more than what we take for granted in the West. Yes, some do want to kill us, but we have to remember the killers from our own ranks, like the unbalanced ex-student who took 17 lives recently, the McVeighs, and others who were not Muslim..

Ian – t o be concise about the theme of this thread, protecting Islamic supremacism and the Hijrah (ie, conquest of Infidel lands by collective immigration) explains why Al Jazeerah peddles this obvious non-sense.
I really hate to invoke this card, but…I am a woman. I see the attacks and harassment suffered by hundreds of women in Europe and elsewhere at the hands of so-called refugees. Remember those attacks in Europe on New Year’s Eve the year before last? Hundreds of “refugees” raping and sexually assaulting hundreds of women. And the governments tried to cover it up and ignore it as much as possible. Think that was a one-time thing, for the perpetrators or the government? Hardly any of those men were caught or charged. So hundreds of men who think rape and sexual assault are acceptable pastimes are wandering around Europe. And those are the ones we know about from a single night. I have read too many reports of crimes being ignored or kept very quiet because the authorities are afraid of being labeled racist or anti-refugee or anti-immigrant.
There are enough so-called men in Western countries who think they can do whatever they want to do to women, despite being taught that women are equal and have rights. In many (if not most) of the refugees’ countries, women are chattel, not considered worthy of respect. Even if women have rights on paper, in practice, they do not. Society teaches men that women are nothing, and that men can abuse them in any way they wish. The media often ignores or downplays it, but there are plenty of cases where immigrants from these places continue to treat the women of the family like crap, and the communities support and reinforce it. There are good men, and I want to believe that they are the majority. But there are plenty who show that they still buy into the sexist ideas and act accordingly.
The vast majority of “refugees” are men of fighting age, which means many, likely a majority, have families, yet they are COMING BY THEMSELVES. This means they have left their wives and children in a dangerous place WITHOUT PROTECTION. Those cowards value their own lives more than their families and left them to suffer and die. Oh, they’ll send for the family once settled? The whole country is in upheaval, how likely is it that they will be able to locate them quickly, let alone transport them? How much will the family suffer while waiting? These men will not fight for their country to become a decent place, and they abandon their families. It is not kind of me, but I do not want to spend limited resources on people like that, especially since those resources are then not available for the truly helpless.
There are decent men from these places, but they are not vulnerable the way women and children are. Bring the women and children (and men from minority religions) to regional refugee camps first. Those “men” can wait until the defenseless are helped. Take care of the ones most in need of help first. And you do not put people in more danger. Open borders mean no screening, no standards. As you point out, there are already murderous scumbags here. We do not need to throw open our doors to others.

MY family gave refuge to a Muslim teenager from Iran. We helped educate, employ, and became successful business partners with him. (His career culminated in a handful of patents earned for 3M company.) Thus, I have had a long abiding interest in MENA, including many months soon to come in Turkey.
Furthermore, Ian underestimates the wisdom of his American cousins. Because of the several wars in MENA since the 1980s, exercised with American leadership, over 1% of the US population has spent prolonged time in service there and among Muslims, whether in the military or as contractors to governments or through private industry.

Most westerners have no knowledge on this topic. Nor do they realize, what is going on in their own countries with respect to the enactment of ‘sharia law’ supplanting the current laws in their own country.
A quick google search on, “sharia law in America,” or “sharia law in Canada,” would reveal to them just how far this so called “religion of pieces,” has spread in the west and Europe.

So much for the World Bank’s definition on poverty, living on less than $2.00 per day. Expenses $1.90, result happiness. Expenses $2.10 per day, result misery.
Most of the ‘developing’ countries’ misery is due to their governments, and the laws that they apply. Add to that a religion that is inclined to fatalism, and people are not, or are dissuaded from, trying to improve their lot. Much easier to ask for gifts from others (the ‘Baksheesh’ tradition), or to try to move to lands with better governing and religious systems.
And no, while the majority of the Muslim invasion are young, healthy, single men, it would not be any better to admit young, healthy, married women and children. That just pushes the problem around the corner for a few years. Can the children be educated to believe that Islam is evil? Doubtful while their mothers believe that it is the best of religions (the most ‘feminist’ of all religions – Yassmin Abdel-Magied) and should conquer the world, and they must do their part in bringing up their children as “Soldiers of the Crescent”.
My fear, that at some time in the future, there will be so many Muslims in Western countries that the signal will be given for an uprising, and there will be a civil war between Muslims and (unprepared) Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, agnostics and atheists. Of course that would result in a remarkable drop in the world’s populations, but presumably that is not what Erlich, Mann, Flannery et all really want.
If I am not mistaken there has been one “officially” claimed climate refugee, or so he claims. The rest are opportunist playing the victim card. The question which should be on everyone’s lips in the West is WHY is the vast majority of refugees are male aged between 17 and 35 and muslim? Does climate/war/economic distress somehow only affect the male followers of this political ideology more than others and if so exactly how? We are repeatedly shown how the family is everything to the followers of this ideology with all their masculine bravado yet here we are being asked to believe by the “media ” that males are running away from war and leaving their families wives children parents behind to the mercy or whatever may befall them. Are you serious? A much simpler answer would be to look at the last 1400 years of European history and what the followers of that ideolgy have been after for the whole of that time. They have form, they have a track record.. and right now they cannot believe their luck to have found that not only do they not have to fight a war to get into Europe but in fact we have government funded organizations tasked specifically to help them come in! The question then is why in the politically correct distorted world we inhabit can it be that this compelling and obvious driver is not even mentioned by the limp wristed dogooders and those in the shadows who pull their strings hiding under the exceedingly questionable banner of liberalism?
