I get hate mail like this from time to time and I’m pretty certain I know who this one is from to Dr. Roy Spencer as it fits the speech and punctuation pattern of some emails I have received. This one is completely unhinged, but it is worth reviewing just so you can see how a true global warming zealot behaves. It’s the sort of ugly and hateful thinking that gets promoted daily by people like Miriam O’Brien aka “Sou” and the “Hotwhopper” madding crowd whose website exists solely for the purpose of denigration.
I’m with Dr. Spencer and the Washington Post on this. The “climate emergency” promoted by Paul Beckwith is “utter nonsense”, and is the worst “science” of the year
More on the Global Climate Emergency: Email from a “Fan”
July 1st, 2016 by Roy W. Spencer, Ph. D.
I get some hate email from time to time. Actually, not very much. I guess I’m still cruising under the radar.
In response to my post yesterday criticizing Paul Beckwith’s postabout the allegedly unprecedented crossing of the equator by jet stream winds (a post which, after much criticism, he has since modified), I received a heartfelt email (reproduced below) asking me to, ummm, back off on my criticism.
This email I received yesterday is rather disturbing because I fear it reveals the low caliber of scientific knowledge that exists out there. Too many people are too easily fooled by pseudo-scientific ramblings which can go viral and cross the globe in a matter of hours. This cuts both ways in the global warming debate, as frequent readers of my blog know I have banned people on my side of the argument for pushing too hard on what I consider to be bad science (e.g. the claim that there is no such thing as the “greenhouse effect”).
Even Jason Samenow from the Capital Weather Gang posted agreement with me that there is nothing unusual about winds at the jet stream level moving back and forth across the equator. Jason also quotes other PhD-level atmospheric scientists in that article.
So, I’m just going to leave this here…I was tempted to answer many of the points made below, but I think it will be more enjoyable for regulars here to take a shot at it.
What A way to treat a fellow scientist. Who the f**k cares if its man made or not! Paul is getting the word out there to people…what are you doing? I don’t see you doing anything except having a web site that no one even knows about…I’ve never heard of you. Paul Beckwith puts a lot of hard work and time into trying to raise the issue…You however are a disgrace to global scientists! Or do you not agree this is an emergency? This one video finally caught some attention and you have to f**k it up…Idiot! We NEED for this to be news so maybe, just maybe something will be done! This video has gone viral…let it be! You have made up lies about him and tried to discredit him…why would you do that??? Many people have moved to the southern hemisphere to get away from the radiation…because this was NOT supposed to happen. You need to take down what you said from your web site! What is happening is dangerous and people need to know…too many people already do not believe GW is real…they need to prepare! They need to know! Jesus Dude…What’s wrong with you? And let’s not throw stones about Donations…You have your own Donation button!!!! Fix it Please…
And….discuss!

The unhinged zealots who write hate filled messages to “save the world” are suffering from drug addiction or mental illness: perhaps a combination of both. This is my opinion.
Maybe they are only uninformed ?
Doug S says, “drugs”
It would be interesting to know if this person is on psych medication, or a so-called recreational drugs.
And sincerity or gullibility in an activist can still get a lot of people killed. Just look at the history of the intellectual revolutionaries in Europe during the 1900’s.
Sincerity is no guarantee of truth.
We need somebody a lot smarter than me, to put together an article on the brain, neural chemicals and getting high from psychological reasons. I just come across bits and pieces that I can never find again. So a quick summary.
Believing we are superior and getting outraged makes us high and we like it. Entertainment is full of righteous outrage stimulation.
We see other people high on righteous outrage and mob mentality starts.
Job 1 is to get high, 2 is to stay high and 3 is to get higher. Examples
We feel good when our team wins and we are saving the climate from humanity.
It is an outrage that people are not trying to save the planet.
If they try to take away our high by telling us we are wrong then we double down on the righteous outrage.
Is there a drug that can get people higher than a rioter and leave their coordination and senses in good working order?
..”Job 1 is to get high, 2 is to stay high and 3 is to get higher.”

I guess, but the thing you really need to avoid is the hangover.
Good luck with that.

There are two:

2. Money

btw: nice summary of the warped personality disorder obviously operating here — Narcissistic-Histrionic-Borderline, perhaps? “Troubled” would seem to cover it.
The short answer is, I think, that these people are still unable to distinguish their worldview from their worth as a human being. To maintain psychological stability, they need to always support the “right” side, the Victims, against the “wrong” side, the Oppressors.
They never use any more intellect than that to arrive at a decision
Thus the people arguing for action on climate change believe they are supporting Victims (Gaia, the Third World, the poor) against the Oppressors (white male capitalists, Fox News, the Koch Brothers, Big Oil etc).
On every issue, they take the same Victim v Oppressor stance. Trump is an Oppressor, so are the people who voted for Brexit, those who oppose gay rights etc etc etc.
The even shorter answer is: these people haven’t grown up yet.
It’s a very emotional kinda thingy Dude so what part of that don’t you get?
Paul Beckwith reminds me of the Woody Harrelson character in the movie ” 2012″

Anthony! I hope you will share this person’s contact info with the FBI. He should be on the “no fly” list!
This is a troll….not true and valid hate mail. Every line is just weird enough to be real but the non-sequiturs are too frequent and constantly go to a differnt point. Could almost be AI generated. (Assumed Intelligent).
“I don’t see you doing anything except having a web site that no one even knows about…I’ve never heard of you…”
Wattsupwiththat.com has several thousands of regular readers, gets mentioned by both side of the ‘debate’ and it’s a ‘web site that no one even knows about’.
I think my irony meter just overloaded.
Beckwith’s video refers to the RobertScribbler.com blog as his source about the impending doom of a minor jet stream gyre crossing the equator. Scribbler’s article about this is here:
https://robertscribbler.com/2016/06/28/gigantic-gravity-waves-to-mix-winter-with-summer-wrecked-jet-stream-now-runs-from-pole-to-pole/#comment-84352 Scribbler’s headline mentions gravity waves, but the article says nothing about them, only about waves in the northern jet streams. His claim that the seasons are “wrecked” is hilarious. Based on that and other hyperbolic article headlines, Scribbler appears to be a 350.org or Grist style Progressive zealot, and as such, is unreachable. His commenters seem to be exclusively of like mind, probably due to Scribbler’s moderation policy. The commenters include some of the regulars from Grist, RealClimate, and some of the alarmist types from Judy Curry’s and Bishop Hill (eg. WebHubTelescope and EntropicMan). The echo chamber effect is in full swing. It’s kind of funny to read in small amounts.
I posted several questions to Scribbler. I was polite, but challenged the science that got Beckwith worked up. Scribbler killed it in moderation. I also followed up with a second set of questions that were a bit more provocative, asking if his Progressive politics informed his scientific conclusions, or if he considered himself a Malthusian or a misanthrope (in the clinical sense). That post never got out of moderation, either. In my first post, I had mentioned that Beckwith’s video was featured here (under a very fair headline about it’s stupidity). I had not yet read Roy Spencer’s post on this subject, yet, but have now.
If Scribbler and Beckwith are becoming more representative of the quality of articles in favor of CAGW alarmism, I may become slightly more optimistic.
“Many people have moved to the southern hemisphere to get away from the radiation”. LOL!!
OMG! Here I recently moved south out of Minnesota to get away from that very radiation and lo and behold, I didn’t get far enough south! What shall I do?
OK, twist my arm. Crack open another Red Horse it is. That will cure any radiation that follows me.
Very good advice which I don’t always follow:
“It’s not fair to get into a battle of witts with an unarmed person.”, and
“When you argue with a dumwit, soon bystanders can’t tell who is who.”
Dr. Spencer: just one minor suggestion. If you changed, ” Too many people are too easily fooled by pseudo-scientific ramblings which can go viral and cross the globe in a matter of hours.”
to
“Too many people are too easily fooled by pseudo-scientific ramblings which can go viral and cross the equator in a matter of hours,” it would make for a nice inside joke.
……………….
I have a theory about these types of cranks. They must have boring lives. They desperately want to live in exciting times where they have a chance to be a hero, do a noble deed, be right about a major event when everyone else is wrong, or at least be a sympathetic victim. They do not take kindly those who threaten their hopeful scenarios of mayhem, forcing them to consider that they are doomed to live an uneventful, meaningless existence.
The real problem is that the person appears to be ‘sincere’ which makes him a “useful idiot” (look up the origin) for the “CAUSE”. He is a religious zealot, and you cannot reason with a person who “WILL NOT EXAMINE THE EVIDENCE”.
“JesusDude”
That invocation should reminds us. When you mess with the faithfuls’ donation plate offerings, you mess with the installation of the stained rose-colored glasses in the mosqchurchtemplegogue of the Holy Off the Wall Rollers, and that is playing with glacier melting fire.
He’s right. And those people moving started moving to Southern Hemisphere decades ago.
900 went to Jonestown.
More recently many others are going to the southern Hemisphere and walling off small towns in order to defend against the walking dead.
We need to get the word out.
Don’t forget the “Heaven’s Gate” crowd (1997), they got off the planet …

I had taste of the true believers’ attitude recently, when I joined my wife and her friends for coffee. My wife exasperated by my views, has let has slip about my scepticism to these friends in the past. In the chatter about the Brexit referendum, I made a remark about EU energy policies. I was swiftly rounded on: “Oh, you’re a climate denier”. “That’s just not up for discussion” . There was real distress in their voices. A few minutes later ..”The ozone hole is healing, isn’t that good”. Self restraint on my part was the order of the day. I wanted to ask what they thought a ‘climate denier’ was, but didn’t, out of politeness.
Did I do wrong?
How has it become socially unacceptable to dissent?
Sounds like there’s a market for “Handling Climate Dummies for Dummies”.
“too many people already do not believe GW is real…they need to prepare! They need to know! Jesus Dude…”
Sounds like a manic street preacher to me.
GW could stand for anything: God, the Second Coming, the End of the World, the Martian Invasion, the zombie apocalypse…
This guy probably thinks he is not religious, but I always get a wry smile out of people invoking Jesus to add emphasis to their own personal sin/death/salvation narrative.
Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahahahahahahahaha
Lamest email ever, dripping with angst and that frustration of trying to explain without knowing anything about what you are trying to say.
lots of ???? and pretty weak and totally unsupported assertions.
A keeper this one.
Chalk this up as another human made a simpleton by the church of climatology
And he says no one knows this site baaaahahahahahahaha
Dude! You should have fled with all those “…people (who) have moved to the southern hemisphere to get away from the radiation….” It’s the radiation, Dude! The radiation has fried your brain! Wrapping yourself around the pant-leg of Paul Beckwith ain’t gonna’ save you! Once you start foaming at the mouth, it’s too late to run.
I classify the warmist community under 3 groups: the true believers, the opportunists, and the useful idiots. For this guy I might need to create a fourth group: useless idiots.
That seems like a valid classification, William R.
(I am s-o-o-o stealing that one.)
That was good … LOL
Not only do I wear a tin hat, but have an EDS strap as well. In addition, the room I never leave, has a copper halo and has grounds running from it out the height of the house. I can see where this guy’s brain got a short circuit.
Besides, the important people read this site. Obviously he isnt.
ESD strap maybe? (Electro Static Discharge)
Of course.. sorry auto correct does that. I have to proof read several times. You would think I was not able to write at all. The last sentence is an example, I changed the wording, it kept putting in ill-fated. Sometimes it’s good, and sometimes it’s what? Aft error I hit send. After…. not aft error.
This is what happens when OJ Believers venture into reading their science pages.
No words.
LEAVE PAUL ALONE!

Who exactly is this “Paul” I’m supposed to leave alone ?
I don’t do “click-bait”.
For a person who hates to see big oil companies getting rich while polluting the world, the theory of global warming is manna from heaven. After decades of having to base their fight on visible, tangible evidence of how pollution is damaging our planet, pollution that will go away relatively quickly if you stop polluting, they now finally have a much longer term, more obtuse weapon that can be shaped with fear tactics to seem much worse than pollution. This glorious theory says if you don’t stop the advancement of oil companies NOW, we will have an unsolvable problem in twenty to fifty years. How bad? Well thats where Al Gore and his “you must exaggerate to get the public’s attention” approach comes in. While these predictions are based on scientific principles they don’t want any debate on the scientific aspect of global warming, because ultimately their reasons for supporting global warming activism is not a concern about the effects of man warming the planet, it is for the reason that they want to shut don’t big oil companies by any means necessary. I’ve always supported the development of alternate energy sources, solar power seems like a clean logical way to go for instance, but the economics of supplying energy to the planet has to be balanced against giving people a chance to live a higher quality of life. Blind support of policies that try to limit global warming seem like the biggest hazard this world is facing related to climate science.
