Antarctica continues to defy the global warming script, with a report from Meteo France, that June this year was the coldest Antarctic June ever recorded, at the French Antarctic Dumont d’Urville Station.
According to the press release, during June this year, the average temperature was -22.4c (-8.3F), 6.6c (11.9F) lower than normal. This is the coldest June ever recorded at the station, and almost the coldest monthly average ever – only September 1953 was colder, with a recorded average temperature of -23.5c (-10.3F).
June this year also broke the June daily minimum temperature record, with a new record low of -34.9c (-30.8F).
Other unusual features of the June temperature record are an unusual excess of sunlight hours (11.8 hours rather than the normal 7.4 hours), and unusually light wind conditions.
Dumont d’Urville Station has experienced ongoing activity since 1956. According to the Meteo France record, there is no other weather station for 1000km in any direction.

There are a couple of weeks, around the 21st of June when the sun does not shine at all. So how could they get an average of 11.8 hours a day of sunlight in June? Unless they mean a TOTAL of 11.8 hours for the entire month. I may have made a wrong assumption, since the wording isn’t explicit. In any case, why would the hours of sunlight vary that much from one June to another? Are sunlight hours on cloudy days not counted?

The Antarctic is a large continent and depending where the station is located, will determine if there is sunlight in June

Dumont d’Urville Station is is 66.39.49S – quite a bit away from the actual south pole.

Does the June daily minimum temperature consist of an average of all June minimum temperatures or is it the coldest temperature recorded during June? I’ve been in Minnesota when the temperature was around -30F, so it doesn’t sound all that low for an Antarctic winter temperature.
Could this be the start of the little ice age predicted by Abdussamatov?
That station is located at 66.33S and receives 3 hours of daylight on June 1st. Drops to 1.2 hours around the 21st and by the end of the month it is up to 1.8 hours. Daylight probably isn’t considered the same as sunlight tho’.

The article does not discuss sunlight it discusses insolation, ie the amount of solar radiation received by an exposed surface.

Forget that last comment of mine. The station is at 66.66S. That makes the the hours of daylight June 1st 2.6 hours. dropping to none JUne 15th through June 27th. achieving a whole 0.9 hours by June 30th.
The XUV Photometer System (XPS) is one of four solar irradiance measurement experiments that was launched in January 2003 as part of the Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment (SORCE). Yes, the spectral variations affect global albedo via cloudiness changes which alters the proportion of TSI entering the oceans.
Some of us have proposed models that acknowledge that fact and incorporate the consequences.
This should read “coldest ever June for Dumont d’Urville” not Antarctica. As for “hours of sunlight” I’d suggest it’d be the same as “hours of sunshine”. They’d be measuring it with a special Antarctic model of the Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder or the French equivalent.

Brisbane, Australia has had many cold nights last month and a half. Call it weather or call it climate — the earth could be entering a mini ice age. Interesting to read that the cold in Antarctica is associated with a cloud-free sky. The cold nights in Queensland also tend to be cloud-free.

The weakening of the polar vortex is visible in the form of rising temperatures in the stratosphere above the polar circle (the temperature of the stratosphere is still below normal).

Yes it was actually nice to hear the weather girl announcing the coldest July record for 100 years, hard to deny the cold weather and the effect of sun and clouds, the minute a cloud obscures the sun it’s damn cold here in Melbourne Australia and lately at night the clouds clear so that little UHI effect remains over the city.
It was also reported that substantial snow is falling at Mount Macedon to the North of Melbourne, I sort of recall that happening back in 1961. I guess this is all new for the kids born in the recent warmalogical decades.

On http://earth.nullschool.net/ , I have been tracking the various areas of Antarctica for temperature using that sight at the surface level setting. So far for July I have been able to locate temperatures of about -71.9C or -97.42F. It will be interesting to see what the record coldest day becomes this year with the last record being set at -135.8F on December 10, 2013 by NASA Satellite. The same satellite data recorded -135.3F on July 31,2010. The coldest thermometer temperature was -128.6F at Vostok on July 21, 1983. Got mittens?
The trend in Antartctia has not stopped. it would have to drop another 1.2 millions square km or MORE and stay there for it to “drop”. Its just fallen to its trend line now and will probably resume its expansive growth within weeks.

10 July: Local France: Alps get summer snow as wet weather to stay
Holidaymakers in the Alps in recent days would have been forgiven for thinking they had come in the wrong season after the region was hit by some very unseasonal snowfalls. There was bad news for sunseekers too with the sun set to stay away for much of July.
Parts of the Alps looked like a winter wonderland on Thursday as summer snow continued to fall, disrupting the usual holiday activities…
The only place youāll be guaranteed sun is down on the Mediterranean the forecaster says, as well as along parts of the Atlantic coast if you are lucky.
Thankfully the weather forecaster says things should improve in Autumn and September, but nothing is guaranteed.

From that site I certainly can’t see how it could be interpreted that there were more than a few hours of sunlight rather than the excess of 11.8 hours quoted for June. Even the average quoted seems far fetched unless they stretch the elastic to include dusk and dawn and then some.
Perhaps someone has an explanation for what exactly is meant.
I’d suggest the 11.8 hours of sunshine quoted is a monthly total. Australian stations normally give a monthly average, but then we have plenty of sunshine and a daily average for the month would be more meaningful. I’m not a great fan of Stokes-Campbell sunshine recorders but they’ve been used for a very long time. They do require a manned station, because paper cards have to be changed daily (preferably after sunset, although they can be changed at the same time daily and sunshine hours apportioned to the correct day, giving cards split over two days). Given the automation of weather stations one wonders whether measurement of sunshine is another element that’ll have a patchy record for the future.

Shifting atmospherics… the hours of sunlight vary because the sunlight is refracted through thick layers of atmosphere due to the sun’s low angle above the horizon and local sunrise/sunset can occur before/after actual sunset.
Thanks for that. According to this page, in the Northern Hemisphere over the last 7 years there has been a general downward trend in temperatures for each specified Winter month, while an upwards trend for the Summer months:

This may correspond to the apparent colder Winters at least the U.S. has seen over the last few years. This trend is particular striking for December where the trend was -0.9Ā° C per decade, or -9Ā° C per century(!)
I wanted to know if this is also true for the Southern Hemisphere, or for the planet as a whole? Note for the planet as a whole, I mean Winter months for the Northern Hemisphere, such as December. Are temperatures showing a downward trend globally for those months?
Judging from this report on Antarctica, IF there is a trend for the Southern Hemisphere, it is also for the Winter months in that hemisphere and is also downwards.
I was reminded of this by something Neil DeGrasse-Tyson said during the episode of Cosmos titled “The World Set Free”. One of the evidences he gave for greenhouse warming at about the 34 minute mark as broadcast was that the Earth was warming faster in Winter than in Summer. He says this is to be expected for greenhouse warming, whereas for solar warming it would be the reverse.
But in the last few years at least in the Northern Hemisphere the warming IS higher in the Summer. So I wanted to know if this a global phenomenon.

This means the Southern Hemisphere is nearing equilibrium. The temperature variation is insufficient to drive winds and enlarge the polar vortex. This is a bad thing. This means the cold air will now mass over the arctic and the ice increase will again resume under it. As the cold air mass increases in size (the down-welling cold has not slowed and has infact increased in speed) it will bleed outward from the polar region. As this mass increases your going to see record cold all over the Southern Hemisphere. As the ENSO is now going cold and the heat dissipated, there is little to buffer what is coming. I expect to see many all time low records broken the next 6-9 weeks down south.

But interesting changes are beginning up north too..
It might be cold in Australia but we have just been in the Kalagadi Park On the border of SA/Botswana and Namibia where the night time temperature fell to -10C. The water pipes all burst and there were dead birds on the ground in the morning. The water hole was frozen over and the Sand Grouse were skating across it trying to peck through for water.
The altitude is 3000ft and we were at 25Deg South. Maybe all that sea ice in the Antarctic is to blame but it was very cold under my blankets inside the tent.
I wonder why nobody pays attention to the temperature drop of ocean currents in the North.

Annual Contiguous US temperatures have been declining at (-0.36 F/DECADE) since 1998. This is happening in 7 of the 9 climate regions in United States. Only the Northeast and the West both of which receive the moderating effect of the oceans, had slight warming trend of 0.2 and 0.3 F/decade respectively. Theses 16 year annual temperature declines illustrate that despite any summer warming , the cooling during winter , spring and fall offsets any summer warming resulting in the annual temperature declines . It shows that the problem is not global warming at all but global cooling The rate of winter cooling is 3.7 times greater than the rate of summer warming, clearly showing that the year will cool more than it will warm

Not only have winters been getting cooler since 1998 in Contiguous US [48 states] and Canada, but winters have been getting colder for the Northern Hemisphere as a whole and for the Globe as a whole. The trend of global land winter temperature anomalies since 1998 has been declining at o.20C/decade and the trend of Northern Hemisphere land winter temperatures has been declining at -0.34C/decade. These are as per CLIMATE AT A GLANCE NCDC/NOAA web page . Declines in winter temperatures trend is also present in England and Europe records. . Winter temperatures declines if significant, can lead to colder spring, summer and fall as we are already seeing in North America this year . This pattern can lead to 17 years to date of no further global warming . I see this pattern continuing for decades into the future as the oceans cool and the ocean conveyor belt is modified.

Just heard on the ABC (Australia) News that Brisbane and many areas of Queensland had their coldest overnight temperature ever recorded. Many inland areas of Queensland had morning temps down to -5 celsius

Definitely a cold June in the Sunshine Coast Hinterlands in SE Queensland with numerous frosts and Saturday morning saw the hardest frost yet. Even under a double coating of shade cloth the basil has cocked it. Clear nights with winds light but from the west and a big, scary moon. However, the autumn was very mild and often warm, so I expect it is just weather and not a sign of winter coming.

I have noticed this year that when the jet stream moves out away from the continent that the rate of ice growth slows. The opposite happens when the jet stream closes in on the continent. The jet moved out to where it is crossing over Australia and the sea ice anomaly has dropped from +2.08 mil/km2 back down close to +1.0 mil/km2 in a relatively short time. The sea ice should see its anomaly increase next month and into September.

Nearly all the CO2 is released in the northern hemisphere, which is now much hotter than the southern hemisphere. But what counts is the melting of the Greenland and Antarctic ice caps which are both loosing 30 feet of vertical height per year. The other problem the thawing of the Siberian permafrost which is now releasing lots of greenhouse gasses and the thawing of the Arctic ocean floor, which is also releasing huge amounts of methane greenhouse gas, so much so, that soon the arctic methane heat trapping effect, will exceed the man made CO2 warming effect. And that’s how an unstoppable extinction level event happens. A warmer world means a much dryer world (IPPC 2007) and we see California running out of water now.

let me see, around twenty years ago we were being warned about the possibility of a mini Ice age, then abruptly the warnings stopped without any retractions to the science, real science, behind the forecast prediction, then the governments of the world immediately after started pushing global warming with their false science. Peter needs a new play book. The old one is 180 degrees out of sync with reality. Increased temps mean increased sea water temps, which mean increased water in the atmosphere, which means greater water distribution globally.. Increasing temps increases water vapor while cooling temps decrease water vapor.. The earth has shown the supposed link of CO2 to water vapor to be minuet to nonexistent and that CO2 trails temperature changes. The world has been cooling for some time already.
Read a book entitled “South”, written about the expeditions of Sir Ernest Shackleton around 1911. You’ll find that temps like this aren’t exactly “news”, except when a variation of 2-3 degrees is considered “news” justifying energy taxes to fight “global warming/cooling/climate ennui”. Every year, during the summer (December in Antarctica), the ice shelf melts completely, enabling a carerfully timed voyager to arrive at the coast of the polar ice cap. Every June, it refreezes, and freezes for 400 miles or more from the coast. Shackleton’s ship was suddenly caught 400 miles out as the water suddenly froze, and within a few weeks, the hull was crushed. They were trapped until the following Spring, when the shelf melted, and they were then able to row away in several dinghies they’d salvaged from the main ship. Both ice caps have ALWAYS melted entirely in Spring, and refroze every Winter, and it’s only now “news” because the average American has been encumbered with a public school “education” that qualifies him for life on the dole, endlessly voting for Democrats. I agree with most of the posts, most of us know the sun is a variable star, but I have measured something else too, the inclination of earth axis have changed 2′ in the last decade according to my observations and that points to variability factor to influence the earth orbit of 0.2 degree at perigee and that means the polar regions winters will be shorter and with more sun, about 10 minutes more.
It may not seams much, but remember the sun drives the winds, ionization and temps at the poles.

Inland NSW (New South Wales), we also recorded -5 C. this morning with a very thick frost. It’s been noticeably getting colder these last few years, complete with snow, which we didn’t used to get at all, normally.
The reason it is so cold is because man-made CO2 traps the cold molecules so they can’t escape the atmosphere, ergo, it gets colder and colder. We must stop all man-made CO2 for the sake of our children, if they don’t get aborted. We must also get more taxpayer money to buy carbon credits so that we can stop all this cooling that’s happening in Antarctica and North America with the Polar Vortex. It’s all so clear.

Global warming models predicted the severe cooling at Antarctica, and whatever else might happen in the future.

Two points that many people may not realize are that winters starts on June 21 in the southern hemisphere, just as summer starts here the same day. The other point is the arctic and antarctic circles are the circles on a globe that have at least one day when the sun does not rise above the horizon in their first winter day, at sea level.
Just as having one hot summer doesn’t prove global warming, having one cold winter doesn’t prove global cooling. Insisting on global warming no matter what the evidence shows does demonstrate something about it’s proponents though. The term bigoted used to mean someone who wouldn’t see the truth even when it was put in front of them, but now it s used for other purposes.

Earth on the Brink of an Ice Age

The earth is now on the brink of entering another Ice Age, according to a large and compelling body of evidence from within the field of climate science. Many sources of data which provide our knowledge base of long-term climate change indicate that the warm, twelve thousand year-long Holocene period will rather soon be coming to an end, and then the earth will return to Ice Age conditions for the next 100,000 years.
Ice cores, ocean sediment cores, the geologic record, and studies of ancient plant and animal populations all demonstrate a regular cyclic pattern of Ice Age glacial maximums which each last about 100,000 years, separated by intervening warm interglacials, each lasting about 12,000 years.
Most of the long-term climate data collected from various sources also shows a strong correlation with the three astronomical cycles which are together known as the Milankovich cycles. The three Milankovich cycles include the tilt of the earth, which varies over a 41,000 year period; the shape of the earthās orbit, which changes over a period of 100,000 years; and the Precession of the Equinoxes, also known as the earthās āwobbleā, which gradually rotates the direction of the earthās axis over a period of 26,000 years. According to the Milankovich theory of Ice Age causation, these three astronomical cycles, each of which effects the amount of solar radiation which reaches the earth, act together to produce the cycle of cold Ice Age maximums and warm interglacials.
Elements of the astronomical theory of Ice Age causation were first presented by the French mathematician Joseph Adhemar in 1842, it was developed further by the English prodigy Joseph Croll in 1875, and the theory was established in its present form by the Serbian mathematician Milutin Milankovich in the 1920s and 30s. In 1976 the prestigious journal āScienceā published a landmark paper by John Imbrie, James Hays, and Nicholas Shackleton entitled āVariations in the Earth’s orbit: Pacemaker of the Ice Ages,ā which described the correlation which the trio of scientist/authors had found between the climate data obtained from ocean sediment cores and the patterns of the astronomical Milankovich cycles. Since the late 1970s, the Milankovich theory has remained the predominant theory to account for Ice Age causation among climate scientists, and hence the Milankovich theory is always described in textbooks of climatology and in encyclopaedia articles about the Ice Ages.
In their 1976 paper Imbrie, Hays, and Shackleton wrote that their own climate forecasts, which were based on sea-sediment cores and the Milankovich cycles, “ā¦ must be qualified in two ways. During the 1970s the famous American astronomer Carl Sagan and other scientists began promoting the theory that āgreenhouse gassesā such as carbon dioxide, or CO2, produced by human industries could lead to catastrophic global warming. Since the 1970s the theory of āanthropogenic global warmingā (AGW) has gradually become accepted as fact by most of the academic establishment, and their acceptance of AGW has inspired a global movement to encourage governments to make pivotal changes to prevent the worsening of AGW.
The central piece of evidence that is cited in support of the AGW theory is the famous āhockey stickā graph which was presented by Al Gore in his 2006 film āAn Inconvenient Truth.ā The āhockey stickā graph shows an acute upward spike in global temperatures which began during the 1970s and continued through the winter of 2006/07. However, this warming trend was interrupted when the winter of 2007/8 delivered the deepest snow cover to the Northern Hemisphere since 1966 and the coldest temperatures since 2001. It now appears that the current Northern Hemisphere winter of 2008/09 will probably equal or surpass the winter of 2007/08 for both snow depth and cold temperatures.
The main flaw in the AGW theory is that its proponents focus on evidence from only the past one thousand years at most, while ignoring the evidence from the past million years — evidence which is essential for a true understanding of climatology. The data from paleoclimatology provides us with an alternative and more credible explanation for the recent global temperature spike, based on the natural cycle of Ice Age maximums and interglacials.
In 1999 the British journal āNatureā published the results of data derived from glacial ice cores collected at the Russiaās Vostok station in Antarctica during the 1990s. The Vostok ice core data includes a record of global atmospheric temperatures, atmospheric CO2 and other greenhouse gases, and airborne particulates starting from 420,000 years ago and continuing through history up to our present time.

Uh, MN just had the coldest winter in 130 years. Where 1 to 3 evenings 25 below, F were de rigueur, we had two dozen. We had a stretch of 44 days without breaking zero F. While not threatening the record of 68 days set in 1874, still a six sigma departure from the norm.
We’ve had the yearly total in precip over the past 90 days. A year ago last April we had 40 inches of snow and record late ice outs in many lakes mid-May.
This has not been due to a displacement of Arctic air from Siberia, it is not due to PDO in negative phase, it’s not a linear increase in atmospheric carbon.
Merely because one cannot say where the truth lies does not insure one is not lying.
It is clearly visible blockade ozone in the region of Australia. Lows arctic and jetstream will move north. Ice stopped.
