Coldest Antarctic June Ever Recorded

Story submitted by Eric Worrall

Antarctica continues to defy the global warming script, with a report from Meteo France, that June this year was the coldest Antarctic June ever recorded, at the French Antarctic Dumont d’Urville Station.

According to the press release, during June this year, the average temperature was -22.4c (-8.3F), 6.6c (11.9F) lower than normal. This is the coldest June ever recorded at the station, and almost the coldest monthly average ever – only September 1953 was colder, with a recorded average temperature of -23.5c (-10.3F).

June this year also broke the June daily minimum temperature record, with a new record low of -34.9c (-30.8F).

Other unusual features of the June temperature record are an unusual excess of sunlight hours (11.8 hours rather than the normal 7.4 hours), and unusually light wind conditions.

Dumont d’Urville Station has experienced ongoing activity since 1956. According to the Meteo France record, there is no other weather station for 1000km in any direction.

Coldest Antarctic June Ever Recorded
————
How long has June been recording?

July 12, 2014 12:05 am

There shouldn’t be any sunlight in June in the Antarctic????

Louis

There are a couple of weeks, around the 21st of June when the sun does not shine at all. So how could they get an average of 11.8 hours a day of sunlight in June? Unless they mean a TOTAL of 11.8 hours for the entire month. I may have made a wrong assumption, since the wording isn’t explicit. In any case, why would the hours of sunlight vary that much from one June to another? Are sunlight hours on cloudy days not counted?

“There shouldnā€™t be any sunlight in June in the Antarctic”
The Antarctic is a large continent and depending where the station is located, will determine if there is sunlight in June
For example, http://www.antarctica.gov.au/about-antarctica/environment/weather/sunlight-hours shows the sunlight at a number of Australian stations.
Dumont d’Urville Station is is 66.39.49S – quite a bit away from the actual south pole.

Indeed. But I just checked their station blog and I understand/guess the 11.8 hours of sunlight is for the whole of June. And its sunlight and not sunshine.

Winter over at Dumont d’Urville
“Midwinter party. To break the monotony of the winter, there is a traditional party on the shortest day of the year, June 21st, which in our case lasted for 8 days”
Some other quotes from this blog:
“Temperature in DdU is not bad: around 0 in summer, down to -37Ā°C (-35Ā°F) in winter. But the wind is a killer. I had 250 km/h (150 mph) and there has been recorded wind up to 315 km/h (200 mph) ! I’ve seen rocks and buildings fly, and I wasn’t even that drunk.”
And this description of a photo of the base..
“The small white buildings in the center are freezers (warmer than the outside air !),”

=====
Does the June daily minimum temperature consist of an average of all June minimum temperatures or is it the coldest temperature recorded during June? I’ve been in Minnesota when the temperature was around -30F, so it doesn’t sound all that low for an Antarctic winter temperature.

That station is located at 66.33S and receives 3 hours of daylight on June 1st. Drops to 1.2 hours around the 21st and by the end of the month it is up to 1.8 hours. Daylight probably isn’t considered the same as sunlight tho’.

Solar Radiation
The Sunā€™s illumination is the ultimate energy source for the Earth’s biosphere, and the ultimate driving force for atmospheric, and oceanic circulations. The Sun is a variable star as one can see from sunspots recorded back to Galileoā€™s time in the early 1600s. Satellite observations over the past three decades show that the sunspot activity is associated with changes in solar output energy. The total solar irradiance (TSI), improperly called ā€œsolar constantā€ until a few years ago, has been found to change about 0.1% in an 11-year solar sunspot activity. The current most accurate TSI values from the Total Irradiance Monitor (TIM) on NASAā€™s Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment ( SORCE ) is 1360.8 Ā± 0.5 W/m2 during the 2008 solar minimum as compared to previous estimates of 1365.4 Ā± 1.3 W/m2 established in the 1990s.
Sun-climate research is an interdisciplinary field focusing on understanding solar variability and climate response on different time scales, and is critical for understanding and isolating human-induced climate change. Accurate and continuous observation of the TSI is required to monitor and understand the causes of the Earthā€™s radiation (im)balance, over time. Still, knowledge of TSI alone is not sufficient for understanding the physical processes in the Earthā€™s ocean and atmosphere system. Recent studies have shown that even for identical TSI variations, atmospheric and ocean temperatures responsd differently depending on the details of Spectral Solar Irradiance (SSI) variations. SSI observations from the Spectral Irradiance Monitor (SIM) instrument on SORCE revealed variations of SSI in the descending phase of solar cycle 23 that were not anticipated by some semi-empirical models. These groundbreaking continuous SIM observations of near full solar spectrum SSI are unprecedented in the history of Sun observations and have helped scientists to understand the important role on climate of SSI variations. Improved TIM and SIM instruments on an upcoming Total Solar and Spectral Irradiance Sensor (TSIS) mission, expected to launch in 2016, will provide even more accurate Sun observations for detecting yet unresolved solar variations, and for further strengthening our understanding the role solar variations have in a changing planet.
Sun-climate research activities in Climate and Radiation Laboratory focus on analyzing observed solar irradiance for understanding solar variability, and investigating observed and simulated climate responses to solar variations recorded in satellite observations in order to pin down the physical mechanisms in the Sun-climate connection. Recently a joint Sun-Climate Research Center (SCRC) between NASAā€™s Goddard Space Flight Center and the University of Coloradoā€™s Laboratory for Atmosphere and Space Physics (LASP) has been formed to foster collaborative studies of Sun effects on Earthā€™s climate. The center provides opportunities for scientist collaboration, and is a means for post-doctoral scientists and graduate students in science, engineering, and mission operations to move between LASP and Goddard.

The XUV Photometer System (XPS) is one of four solar irradiance measurement experiments that was launched in January 2003 as part of the Solar Radiation and Climate Experiment (SORCE). Studies of the solar XUV radiation began in the 1960s with space-based rocket experiments, but the knowledge of the solar XUV irradiance, both in absolute magnitude and variability, has been questionable due largely to the very limited number of observations. With the launch of Solar & Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) in 1995, Student Nitric Oxide Explorer (SNOE) in 1998, and Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Mesosphere-Energetics-Dynamics (TIMED) spacecraft in 2001, there is now a continuous data set of the solar XUV irradiance, and advances in the understanding of the solar XUV irradiance have begun. The SORCE XPS, which evolved from earlier versions flown on SNOE and TIMED, continue on these solar XUV irradiance measurements with improvements to accuracy, spectral image, and temporal change.

Yes, the spectral variations affect global albedo via cloudiness changes which alters the proportion of TSI entering the oceans.
Some of us have proposed models that acknowledge that fact and incorporate the consequences.

This should read “coldest ever June for Dumont d’Urville” not Antarctica. As for “hours of sunlight” I’d suggest it’d be the same as “hours of sunshine”. They’d be measuring it with a special Antarctic model of the Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder or the French equivalent.

Currently, the sea ice around Antarctica abruptly stopped. This means the weakening of the polar vortex in the lower stratosphere.

It was also reported that substantial snow is falling at Mount Macedon to the North of Melbourne, I sort of recall that happening back in 1961. I guess this is all new for the kids born in the recent warmalogical decades.

So far for July I have been able to locate temperatures of about -71.9C or -97.42F. It will be interesting to see what the record coldest day becomes this year with the last record being set at -135.8F on December 10, 2013 by NASA Satellite. The same satellite data recorded -135.3F on July 31,2010. The coldest thermometer temperature was -128.6F at Vostok on July 21, 1983. Got mittens?

From that site I certainly can’t see how it could be interpreted that there were more than a few hours of sunlight rather than the excess of 11.8 hours quoted for June. Even the average quoted seems far fetched unless they stretch the elastic to include dusk and dawn and then some.

I’d suggest the 11.8 hours of sunshine quoted is a monthly total. Australian stations normally give a monthly average, but then we have plenty of sunshine and a daily average for the month would be more meaningful. I’m not a great fan of Stokes-Campbell sunshine recorders but they’ve been used for a very long time. They do require a manned station, because paper cards have to be changed daily (preferably after sunset, although they can be changed at the same time daily and sunshine hours apportioned to the correct day, giving cards split over two days). Given the automation of weather stations one wonders whether measurement of sunshine is another element that’ll have a patchy record for the future.

The El NiƱo Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the dominant mode of tropical variability on interannual timescales. It is well known to have significant influence on the Walker Circulation in the tropical Pacific. Large perturbations to the circulation as well as resulting changes in water vapor can change ozone concentrations in the lower atmosphere. The largest changes in ozone from ENSO are seen near the tropopause which is a particularly sensitive region of our climate system. Ozone is an important greenhouse gas and changes in its amount especially in the upper troposphere influence radiative forcing at the surface. Ozone is also an important source of the hydroxyl radical (OH) which can impact the oxidizing capacity of the troposphere and the lifetimes of some greenhouse gases. Observations of the ozone sensitivity could provide a useful way to evaluate the representation of processes such as ENSO in chemistry-climate models. .

To investigate the 2011 Arctic ozone loss, scientists from 19 institutions in nine countries (United States, Germany, The Netherlands, Canada, Russia, Finland, Denmark, Japan and Spain) analyzed a comprehensive set of measurements. These included daily global observations of trace gases and clouds from NASA’s Aura and CALIPSO spacecraft; ozone measured by instrumented balloons; meteorological data and atmospheric models. The scientists found that at some altitudes, the cold period in the Arctic lasted more than 30 days longer in 2011 than in any previously studied Arctic winter, leading to the unprecedented ozone loss. Further studies are needed to determine what factors caused the cold period to last so long.
“Day-to-day temperatures in the 2010-11 Arctic winter did not reach lower values than in previous cold Arctic winters,” said lead author Gloria Manney of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., and the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro. “The difference from previous winters is that temperatures were low enough to produce ozone-destroying forms of chlorine for a much longer time. This implies that if winter Arctic stratospheric temperatures drop just slightly in the future, for example as a result of climate change, then severe Arctic ozone loss may occur more frequently.”

Thanks for that. According to this page, in the Northern Hemisphere over the last 7 years there has been a general downward trend in temperatures for each specified Winter month, while an upwards trend for the Summer months:
October 13, 2013
HADCRUT4 Northern Hemisphere Winter Doom .
http://sunshinehours.wordpress.com/2013/10/13/hadcrut4-northern-hemisphere-winter-doom/
This may correspond to the apparent colder Winters at least the U.S. has seen over the last few years. This trend is particular striking for December where the trend was -0.9Ā° C per decade, or -9Ā° C per century(!)
I wanted to know if this is also true for the Southern Hemisphere, or for the planet as a whole? Note for the planet as a whole, I mean Winter months for the Northern Hemisphere, such as December. Are temperatures showing a downward trend globally for those months?
Judging from this report on Antarctica, IF there is a trend for the Southern Hemisphere, it is also for the Winter months in that hemisphere and is also downwards.
I was reminded of this by something Neil DeGrasse-Tyson said during the episode of Cosmos titled “The World Set Free”. One of the evidences he gave for greenhouse warming at about the 34 minute mark as broadcast was that the Earth was warming faster in Winter than in Summer. He says this is to be expected for greenhouse warming, whereas for solar warming it would be the reverse.
But in the last few years at least in the Northern Hemisphere the warming IS higher in the Summer. So I wanted to know if this a global phenomenon.

This means the Southern Hemisphere is nearing equilibrium. The temperature variation is insufficient to drive winds and enlarge the polar vortex. This is a bad thing. This means the cold air will now mass over the arctic and the ice increase will again resume under it. As the cold air mass increases in size (the down-welling cold has not slowed and has infact increased in speed) it will bleed outward from the polar region. As this mass increases your going to see record cold all over the Southern Hemisphere. As the ENSO is now going cold and the heat dissipated, there is little to buffer what is coming. I expect to see many all time low records broken the next 6-9 weeks down south.

The water pipes all burst and there were dead birds on the ground in the morning. The water hole was frozen over and the Sand Grouse were skating across it trying to peck through for water.

JUL +0.25 F (rising)
AUG -0.01 F (declining)
FALL( -0.44 F/DECADE)-DECLINING
SEPT +0.06 F (flat)
OCT -0.61 F (declining)
NOV -0.76 F (declining)
ANNUAL(-0.36 F/DECADE)-DECLINING
Annual Contiguous US temperatures have been declining at (-0.36 F/DECADE) since 1998. This is happening in 7 of the 9 climate regions in United States. Only the Northeast and the West both of which receive the moderating effect of the oceans, had slight warming trend of 0.2 and 0.3 F/decade respectively. Theses 16 year annual temperature declines illustrate that despite any summer warming , the cooling during winter , spring and fall offsets any summer warming resulting in the annual temperature declines . It shows that the problem is not global warming at all but global cooling The rate of winter cooling is 3.7 times greater than the rate of summer warming, clearly showing that the year will cool more than it will warm
Summary
8 months are declining, 1 month is flat, and 3 months are rising
ANNUAL ,WINTER ,SPRING and FALL have DECLINING TEMPERATURES
SUMMER has RISING TEMPERATURES [only MARCH, JUNE and JULY have still rising temperatures]
These temperature anomaly trend declines are similar to past temperature declines in United States during 1895-1920 and again 1953 -1979. A similar cool period seems to have started during the current decade .

Not only have winters been getting cooler since 1998 in Contiguous US [48 states] and Canada, but winters have been getting colder for the Northern Hemisphere as a whole and for the Globe as a whole. The trend of global land winter temperature anomalies since 1998 has been declining at o.20C/decade and the trend of Northern Hemisphere land winter temperatures has been declining at -0.34C/decade. These are as per CLIMATE AT A GLANCE NCDC/NOAA web page . Declines in winter temperatures trend is also present in England and Europe records. . Winter temperatures declines if significant, can lead to colder spring, summer and fall as we are already seeing in North America this year . This pattern can lead to 17 years to date of no further global warming . I see this pattern continuing for decades into the future as the oceans cool and the ocean conveyor belt is modified.

For those with eyes to see, there appears to be a pattern unfolding down under. Brisbane just recorded its coldest temperature since 1911. All the while the sea ice surrounding Antarctica continues to expand and thicken, for those of you heavily invested in the warmist party line. So it may be quite a while longer before the categorical prediction of the “unstoppable” collapse of the WAIS comes to pass.

The jet moved out to where it is crossing over Australia and the sea ice anomaly has dropped from +2.08 mil/km2 back down close to +1.0 mil/km2 in a relatively short time. Nearly all the CO2 is released in the northern hemisphere, which is now much hotter than the southern hemisphere. But what counts is the melting of the Greenland and Antarctic ice caps which are both loosing 30 feet of vertical height per year. The other problem the thawing of the Siberian permafrost which is now releasing lots of greenhouse gasses and the thawing of the Arctic ocean floor, which is also releasing huge amounts of methane greenhouse gas, so much so, that soon the arctic methane heat trapping effect, will exceed the man made CO2 warming effect. And that’s how an unstoppable extinction level event happens. A warmer world means a much dryer world (IPPC 2007) and we see California running out of water now.

ā€œSurface air temperature (SAT) from four reanalysis/analysis datasets are analyzed and compared with the observed SAT from 11 stations in the Antarcticā€¦ā€¦Antarctic SIC trends agree well with the local SAT trends in the most Antarctic regions. That is, Antarctic SIC and SAT show an inverse relationship: a cooling (warming) SAT trend is associated with an upward (downward) SIC trend.ā€

Peter needs a new play book. The old one is 180 degrees out of sync with reality. Increased temps mean increased sea water temps, which mean increased water in the atmosphere, which means greater water distribution globally.. Increasing temps increases water vapor while cooling temps decrease water vapor.. The earth has shown the supposed link of CO2 to water vapor to be minuet to nonexistent and that CO2 trails temperature changes. The world has been cooling for some time already.

July 12, 2014 7:06 pm

Read a book entitled “South”, written about the expeditions of Sir Ernest Shackleton around 1911. You’ll find that temps like this aren’t exactly “news”, except when a variation of 2-3 degrees is considered “news” justifying energy taxes to fight “global warming/cooling/climate ennui”. Every year, during the summer (December in Antarctica), the ice shelf melts completely, enabling a carerfully timed voyager to arrive at the coast of the polar ice cap. Every June, it refreezes, and freezes for 400 miles or more from the coast. Shackleton’s ship was suddenly caught 400 miles out as the water suddenly froze, and within a few weeks, the hull was crushed. They were trapped until the following Spring, when the shelf melted, and they were then able to row away in several dinghies they’d salvaged from the main ship. Both ice caps have ALWAYS melted entirely in Spring, and refroze every Winter, and it’s only now “news” because the average American has been encumbered with a public school “education” that qualifies him for life on the dole, endlessly voting for Democrats. FYI: Al Gore did, in fact “study” science for a full semester at Harvard. Got a D in it…

I agree with most of the posts, most of us know the sun is a variable star, but I have measured something else too, the inclination of earth axis have changed 2′ in the last decade according to my observations and that points to variability factor to influence the earth orbit of 0.2 degree at perigee and that means the polar regions winters will be shorter and with more sun, about 10 minutes more.
It may not seams much, but remember the sun drives the winds, ionization and temps at the poles.

July 12, 2014 8:16 pm

So let me get this straight ,like the sun has more to do with how hot the earth gets then cow farts and my Honda ,sorry I just don’t freakin believe it man .The sun is like so tiny ,like the top of my thumb man ,and cow farts suck . July 12, 2014 9:33 pm

The reason it is so cold is because man-made CO2 traps the cold molecules so they can’t escape the atmosphere, ergo, it gets colder and colder. We must stop all man-made CO2 for the sake of our children, if they don’t get aborted. We must also get more taxpayer money to buy carbon credits so that we can stop all this cooling that’s happening in Antarctica and North America with the Polar Vortex. It’s all so clear.

Algore has been pushing this steaming pile of excrement deciding carbon was now the evil element. It’s obvious he was a “D” student in his environmental science class, and I have to wonder if he ever heard of the carbon cycle? We have had how many scandals now where scientists have fudged data so their computer models would have a favorable outcome? But they keep chanting the same lie, and the gullible lemmings continue toward the edge of the cliff. There are so may ways to punch holes in the global warming/climate change bravo sierra, it becomes pointless to debate because the A-clowns just refuse to hear. Another thing which is annoying is the claim that scientists are all in consensus over this load of excrement? The truth is many scientists have become leftist operatives & propaganda tools. Two points that many people may not realize are that winters starts on June 21 in the southern hemisphere, just as summer starts here the same day. The other point is the arctic and antarctic circles are the circles on a globe that have at least one day when the sun does not rise above the horizon in their first winter day, at sea level.
Just as having one hot summer doesn’t prove global warming, having one cold winter doesn’t prove global cooling. Insisting on global warming no matter what the evidence shows does demonstrate something about it’s proponents though. The term bigoted used to mean someone who wouldn’t see the truth even when it was put in front of them, but now it s used for other purposes.

The earth is now on the brink of entering another Ice Age, according to a large and compelling body of evidence from within the field of climate science. Many sources of data which provide our knowledge base of long-term climate change indicate that the warm, twelve thousand year-long Holocene period will rather soon be coming to an end, and then the earth will return to Ice Age conditions for the next 100,000 years.
Ice cores, ocean sediment cores, the geologic record, and studies of ancient plant and animal populations all demonstrate a regular cyclic pattern of Ice Age glacial maximums which each last about 100,000 years, separated by intervening warm interglacials, each lasting about 12,000 years.
Most of the long-term climate data collected from various sources also shows a strong correlation with the three astronomical cycles which are together known as the Milankovich cycles. The three Milankovich cycles include the tilt of the earth, which varies over a 41,000 year period; the shape of the earthā€™s orbit, which changes over a period of 100,000 years; and the Precession of the Equinoxes, also known as the earthā€™s ā€˜wobbleā€™, which gradually rotates the direction of the earthā€™s axis over a period of 26,000 years. According to the Milankovich theory of Ice Age causation, these three astronomical cycles, each of which effects the amount of solar radiation which reaches the earth, act together to produce the cycle of cold Ice Age maximums and warm interglacials.
Elements of the astronomical theory of Ice Age causation were first presented by the French mathematician Joseph Adhemar in 1842, it was developed further by the English prodigy Joseph Croll in 1875, and the theory was established in its present form by the Serbian mathematician Milutin Milankovich in the 1920s and 30s. In 1976 the prestigious journal ā€œScienceā€ published a landmark paper by John Imbrie, James Hays, and Nicholas Shackleton entitled ā€œVariations in the Earth’s orbit: Pacemaker of the Ice Ages,ā€ which described the correlation which the trio of scientist/authors had found between the climate data obtained from ocean sediment cores and the patterns of the astronomical Milankovich cycles. Since the late 1970s, the Milankovich theory has remained the predominant theory to account for Ice Age causation among climate scientists, and hence the Milankovich theory is always described in textbooks of climatology and in encyclopaedia articles about the Ice Ages.
In their 1976 paper Imbrie, Hays, and Shackleton wrote that their own climate forecasts, which were based on sea-sediment cores and the Milankovich cycles, “ā€¦ must be qualified in two ways. First, they apply only to the natural component of future climatic trends – and not to anthropogenic effects such as those due to the burning of fossil fuels. Second, they describe only the long-term trends, because they are linked to orbital variations with periods of 20,000 years and longer. Climatic oscillations at higher frequencies are not predicted… the results indicate that the long-term trend over the next 20,000 years is towards extensive Northern Hemisphere glaciation and cooler climate.”
During the 1970s the famous American astronomer Carl Sagan and other scientists began promoting the theory that ā€˜greenhouse gassesā€™ such as carbon dioxide, or CO2, produced by human industries could lead to catastrophic global warming. Since the 1970s the theory of ā€˜anthropogenic global warmingā€™ (AGW) has gradually become accepted as fact by most of the academic establishment, and their acceptance of AGW has inspired a global movement to encourage governments to make pivotal changes to prevent the worsening of AGW.
The central piece of evidence that is cited in support of the AGW theory is the famous ā€˜hockey stickā€™ graph which was presented by Al Gore in his 2006 film ā€œAn Inconvenient Truth.ā€ The ā€˜hockey stickā€™ graph shows an acute upward spike in global temperatures which began during the 1970s and continued through the winter of 2006/07. However, this warming trend was interrupted when the winter of 2007/8 delivered the deepest snow cover to the Northern Hemisphere since 1966 and the coldest temperatures since 2001. It now appears that the current Northern Hemisphere winter of 2008/09 will probably equal or surpass the winter of 2007/08 for both snow depth and cold temperatures.
The main flaw in the AGW theory is that its proponents focus on evidence from only the past one thousand years at most, while ignoring the evidence from the past million years — evidence which is essential for a true understanding of climatology. The data from paleoclimatology provides us with an alternative and more credible explanation for the recent global temperature spike, based on the natural cycle of Ice Age maximums and interglacials.
In 1999 the British journal ā€œNatureā€ published the results of data derived from glacial ice cores collected at the Russiaā€™s Vostok station in Antarctica during the 1990s. The Vostok ice core data includes a record of global atmospheric temperatures, atmospheric CO2 and other greenhouse gases, and airborne particulates starting from 420,000 years ago and continuing through history up to our present time.

Uh, MN just had the coldest winter in 130 years. Where 1 to 3 evenings 25 below, F were de rigueur, we had two dozen. We had a stretch of 44 days without breaking zero F. While not threatening the record of 68 days set in 1874, still a six sigma departure from the norm.
We’ve had the yearly total in precip over the past 90 days. A year ago last April we had 40 inches of snow and record late ice outs in many lakes mid-May.
This has not been due to a displacement of Arctic air from Siberia, it is not due to PDO in negative phase, it’s not a linear increase in atmospheric carbon.
Merely because one cannot say where the truth lies does not insure one is not lying.

So things got changed on to Earth because of
our unique situation that we call as plume rise. Although analytical chemistry 1952 it is sometimes
impossible to tell where the pollutants seep down. Is he still surviving, I
do not know what is the energy released during the atomic explosions.

Kristan chemistry changes in the stratosphere due to changes in UV radiation and galactic radiation. This is due to changes in solar activity.

Well, just in case anyone is still reading this, much like Australia, my native South Africa has also had a winter with many record lows. There was even talk of snow in my home town, Pretoria. That would have made it the second time in 3 years and the 3rd in my entire lifespan of 33 years, the first being when I was too young to remember it. Those of you who happened to have visited South Africa can attest that the one thing South Africa is most definitely not known for is snow. Make of the record lows and increased likelihood of snow what you wish.

ā€œOn July 14, 2014, a sounding rocket will be ready to launch from White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico a little before noon local time. Soaring up to 180 miles into Earthā€™s atmosphere, past the layers that can block much of the sunā€™s high energy light, the Degradation Free Spectrometers experiment will have six minutes to observe the extreme ultraviolet and soft x-rays streaming from the sun, in order to measure the sunā€™s total energy output, known as irradiance, in these short wavelengths.
The total solar irradiance, and to an even greater degree, irradiance at high energy wavelengths is known to change over time in conjunction with the sunā€™s approximately-11-year solar cycle. How it changes over longer periods of time, however, is less certain ā€“ but fairly important if weā€™re going to understand how solar variability affects Earthā€™s space environment.ā€

[snip . . try and be civil. . mod] Antarctica ( and the ENTIRE southern hemisphere ) works on the OPPOSITE schedule that we do?!?!?!? NOOOO, apparently not…Not all of the the Ice is -80F…. it IS surrounded by all of the southern oceans… they are going into winter, as we are going into summer…. I should know, I winter-overed… as a meteorologist…. [snip . . ibid . . mod]

The high for the day to the south in MPLS/STP will be 64 F. The high for the week is forecast at 79 F. We peaked above 80 F a couple afternoons last week. We have not threatened 90 F this season.
No way corn makes 2500 GDD before first frost.

Not to worry, global warming causes water to melt even when the temp is well below freezing!

Is this due to an instability from the poles like the Americas suffered?

Magnetic Polar north has a normal variation and immigration, witch also impacts the earth.
Polar variation, 11yr cycle of the sun spots, el nino, la nina and many more natural changes in the earth will cause changes, these changes are normal, just like: Spring, Fall, Summer and Winter.

Still just more proof of Global Warming, temperatures go up, Global Warming, temperatures go down, Also Global Warming, Ice melts, Global Warming, Ice increases, that’s Global Warming too.
Have faith, Global Warming is coming, forget about the bushes that died from last winters cold that had been growing in front of your house for 60 years, Global Warming. Remember weather isn’t Global Warming, climate is Global Warming, so the weather may get cooler, but it’s still Global Warming and it’s your fault, you caused this, you have doomed all our grandchildren, because as always, Global Warming is only 35 to 50 years away.

Turn on the lights and turn up the heat. The Google translation is not great. How do I know? Because I am a terrible translator so I know a bad translation when I see one.
Rappelez-vous, ajouter de la chaleur Ơ la terre, il est plus froid, moins il se rƩchauffe dans ce cas, il fait plus chaud.
My translation, “global warming makes the world cooler, unless the temperature goes up, in which case it makes it warmer.”
it sounds like it almost makes sense in French.

JP, the raw GISS data shows record cold. However, after adjusting for outliers, toe nail clippings, penguin methane, walrus blubber and polar bear droppings the data proves sauna like conditions in Antarctica with a constant temperature of 50C (122F) Pack a swimsuit and deodorant soap and leave the thermal underwear at home. I hope the Starbucks down there has an ice coffee. /sarc

Hi Kevin Ā– I agree with your last point. However, it is just a fact that the grading you refer to is very often regarded as and communicated as a lesson observation grade
