Congratulations to Joe "Doc" D'Aleo

I’ve known about this for quite some time, but kept it mum, because as Joe wrote in an email exchange today, “Yes, I was nervous that I would get protesters if it was widely made known.” Below is the photo of Joe getting recognition for his years of service to the meteorological community.

Here is the announcement:

2014 Commencement, LYNDON -A Vermont State College

Jane Lindholm, host of Vermont Public Radio’s award-winning Vermont

Edition, will deliver the graduation address at LSC’s 103rd commencement

ceremonies. The event will begin at 11 a.m., Sunday, May 18, under the tent on the soccer field.

Former LSC meteorology faculty member Joseph D’Aleo will be awarded

an honorary doctoral degree for his accomplishments as an educator

and a pioneer in the field of broadcast meteorology.

While at LSC, D’Aleo helped establish an Air Force ROTC program, a campus

weather service, a co-op internship program, and the Northeast

Storm Conference. D’Aleo and John Coleman turned Coleman’s vision

for a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week television station dedicated to forecasting

the weather into The Weather Channel.

Sincere congratulations Joe. It is well deserved, and long overdue.

One thing we can be certain of is that unlike NCDC Director Tom Karl, he won’t use an honorary degree to puff up his stature.

You’re so very welcome, Airman McMillan (if my assumption is correct), and thank you for your service in the USAF — protecting and defending the Constitution of the United States of America!

In addition to all the work we see from Joe, he still makes it out to more local events here in New Hampshire. He talks to civics groups, testified to the Governor’s Climate Change task force, and at many legislative hearings on climate, withdrawing from RGGI, and putting meaningful controls on wind turbine placement around the Granite State.
This is one of the more deserved honorary doctorates. Heck, Joe would have given the commencement speech for free.

What next? Penn State gives Joe Bastardi a honorary doctorate? Maybe in a decade or two and then only if we’re all freezing our butts off in May. 🙂

Italians all around.; sounds like a set up to me.
Way to go Dr. Joe; so now you can start applying for Post Doc fellowships, that generally involve a stipend . Couldn’t hurt.
George.

Congratulations Dr. Joe.
With the photo, there was a pang of disappointment though because I had high school classmates with the name ending in ‘o’ but they all had red hair. I always figured you did. But then, that silver fox look is cool too!

Well deserved. At my daughter’s comencement an honorary doctorate was handed out and they went out of their way to point out it had the same validity as an earned degree. That it WAS a Doctorate with all the rights and privileges. So I second the notion of applying for grants to study AGW and weather…

And Happy Birthday Joe!
