Showtime’s “Years of Living Dangerously” aired Sun, Apr 20, at 10:00 PM and didn’t even make the top 100 cable TV shows this week and was beaten in its time slot by a re-run episode of the animated cartoon Bob’s Burgers. Ouch!

According to the producer, this docudrama got the “big budget” treatment to the tune of $20 million. Looks like nobody cares.

Maybe it was the “journalists”. Matt Damon, Harrison Ford, Jessica Alba, Ian Somerhalder, Thomas Friedman, and many more celebrities and journalists participated in the documentary event series. For example, even Ahnold didn’t help:

Pretty sad that reruns of “Bob’s Burgers” on Cartoon Network/Adult Swim can beat it. It just goes to show that doom and gloom does not sell.

.04 !!! According to last week’s report, the premiere of YEARS OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY, had a microscopic 0.07.
To help make sense of just how low that rating of 0.04 is, here is some background.
The most commonly cited Nielsen results are reported in two measurements: ratings points and share, usually reported as: “ratings points/share”. As of August 27, 2012, there are an estimated 114.2 million television households in the United States, a drop of nearly 500,000 from the previous year. A single national ratings point represents one percent of the total number, or 1,142,000 households for the 2012–13 season.[2] Nielsen re-estimates the number of TV-equipped households each August for the upcoming television season.
So let’s just use that number for 2012-2013 of 1,142,000 TV households (representing a single ratings point) and multiply by 0.04. We get: 45,680 households viewing “Years of Living Dangerously”.

Actually, the saddest thing is the large number of fake “reality” shows on the list…
But in all fairness, “Bob’s Burgers” is on basic cable/over-the-air broadcast but Showtime is a subscription service. However, several HBO programs also beat “The Years of Broadcasting Propaganda.”
Memo to Showtime: The key to a successful premium cable program is gratuitous sex and nudity. Throw enough of that in, and I’ll watch almost anything.

But Showtime will be rerunning this regularly, I suspect, so the numbers will climb over time.
One of the top rated shows, besides the NBA playoffs and Game of Thrones was Naked and Afraid, maybe Arnold Schwarzenegger should try this show again, only this time naked, that should increase ratings.
Looks like ‘BREAK’ did pretty well.
Just shows people prefer Reality TV, to science fiction! LOL!
While nice to see this in a way, many support the CAGW movement but without interest in viewing more about global warming or seeing even documentaries of their own compatriots:
(1) Relatively boring documentaries in general tend to get far fewer views than entertainment, something which would also be so whether the topic was basket weaving, math, or almost anything without lots of eye candy.
(2) They’ve heard it before.
(3) They may care less about climate itself anyway than about wanting others to believe due to ideopolitical alignments and objectives.
Regarding (3), I’ve never actually encountered a CAGW movement supporter who actually seemed personally scared of the climate predictions, like personally moving away from the coast specifically because of believed future sea level rise or moving further north for that reason. I’ve encountered many who passionately wanted others to believe, though.
For instance, what is the usual response of a CAGW movement supporter to learning that, under their own climate sensitivity assumptions, other forms of geoengineering than CO2 cutbacks could neutralize the predicted warming for <=~ 1% the cost and with lesser biological side-effects (such as stratospheric dispersion of micron-scale reflective dust staying suspended for months at appropriate altitude, in radiative forcing neutralizing orders of magnitude more than its own mass in CO2)? Utterly zero interest in learning more, just bashing it. If you really thought the world was doomed and really wanted to avert it, wouldn't you be a little bit curious?
(Note I don't support geoengineering the planet colder, as warmer is better, but the preceding is still illustrative, as they are the ones who claim it is getting too warm).

What’s really funny is the show that appears to have won the 10:00 PM timeslot hands down – Discovery Channel’s “Naked and Afraid”.
Yep, if you want people to tune in, there’s the magic word that never fails to pull in an audience. I almost feel sorry for James Cameron and his deadly serious crew trying so hard to outdraw a show that’s nothing but naked people running around out in the wild.
“hmm, what are we gonna watch tonite? A depressing show that is gonna preach to us about the evils of civilization? or NAKED PEOPLE runnin’ around, actin’ the fool???”
and the winner is…. NAKED PEOPLE!!!!
p.s. you don’t have to say it – the intellectuals were all watching Bob’s Burgers, and the investors were watching “Silicon Valley”. And that’s the state of society today.
I wonder if that poll (do you care about global warming/climate change) runs like some other polls, like when asked if they went to church last sunday many people answer yes when in fast they did not go.
For those that didn’t watch the show, it featured Anthony Watts with a horse and lance charging Arnold Schwarzenegger. Just before the lance reaches him, Arnold throws a knife into the horse’s eye. The horse goes down and Arnold dispatches Anthony with a scythe-like weapon, to the cheers of the climate alarmists.

According to Gallup Poll concern for the environment is lowest it has been in history. Here is another example that no one but the religiously committed to AGW are paying any attention.
But the TV Rating Statistical Model calculated that this was the highest rated show. There obviously must be some “hidden” ratings not captured by the viewership data.

There is an audience for doom and gloom, but not in reruns or endless remakes of the same old story laced with failed predictions. They are going to have to come up with something new, or even an old rerun that the current generation hasn’t seen yet. (Is it too soon to bring back the ozone hole, China syndrome, acid rain, or global cooling?) Oh well, they’ll think of something. They always do. For control freaks, life isn’t worth living unless they can tell others what to do. For environmental alarmists, life only has meaning if they can convince themselves that they are saving the Earth, not for humanity but from humanity.
