Friday Funny – Mann's Hot Seat

A couple of days ago, I was sent this satirical cartoon totally unsolicited by SFO Bay Area artist Tim Sheppard who said he was troubled by the free speech issues surrounding the Mann-Steyn lawsuit. He sends it with a disclaimer:

DISCLAIMER:  The following editorial cartoon contains satire, parody, exaggeration and uncensored imagery of balding public figures projected to be completely hairless about the north polar region by the year 2020.

It is not peer reviewed.  It makes no claims to absolute undeniable, settled truth, while it does depict a very plausible scenario wherein  catastrophic warming might cause pants to combust and hockey sticks to break spontaneously.

No actual polar bears were harmed in the production of this cartoon.

Free speech is the issue.  The answer to discomforting free speech is even more free speech.

Nice.
But I feel that overwhelming ego, the way it weighs the mann down, needs representation.
One must be careful in todays poisonous political correctness, failing to give the manns overwhelming ego equal time, will have it suing one and all.
Sadly that comment does not require a sarc tag.

“Antarctic is warming. That is the conclusion of scientists analyzing half a century of temperatures on the continent, and the findings may help resolve a climate enigma at the bottom of the planet.” –NYT article, January 21, 2009
Turns out, it wasn’t the entire bottom. Just the peninsula. Ouchie!

Tim Sheppard,
Nicely portrayed. I would entitle your work of art ‘The Mann as portrayed by his own (inept) myths’

This poor fellow has painted a large target on himself. However he absolutely deserves reaping what he has sowed.

The art of Tim Sheppard inspired this adaptation of Percy Bysshe Shelly’s poem ‘Ozymandias’

‘Ozymandias’ ‘Manndias’
“I met a traveller from PSU land
Who said: `Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear —
“My name is Manndias, a science king:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!”
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

I hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed doing it. Apologies to Percy Bysshe Shelly.

That’s not Mann, that’s Gavin Schmidt

Professor Mann is clearly suffering from the effects of a badly performed humorectomy.

I hope that a balding public figure with pants on fire is enjoying all of this as much as I am.
My apologies to Homer Simpson if he should think it reflects a likeness of himself. Homer deserves much better.

If the global warming is in his pants and hot enough to combust his pants, we should really find some water because he is the last person I want to see moon me or anyone else!
That would even traumatize an ER nurse!
Thanks RHS
Now I will have to go and wash out my minds eye with Bleach

The FutureScan PhotoStream Machine returned this image of a certain “famous, yet somehow-non-public-figure” climate guru twenty years from now.

Cephalectomy is the surgical removal of the head (decapitation).

it’s merely a metaphor for being in the hot seat.

A hot seat of his own making.
Sitting on a hockey stick can’t be comfortable.

Understanding OZYMADDIAS
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on those lifeless things
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed
These have always been difficult lines but seem to say this —
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read,
Stamped on those lifeless thing, which (in living beings) yet survive
The (passion of) the hand that mocked them and the (passion of) the heart that fed (on such egomania)
So it seems to be statement that the world is still filled with Ozymandias’ and with artists who through their art mock them.
Considering Shelly’s politics i am reasonably certain that was his intended meaning for those difficult lines

Eugene WR Gallun,
My interpretation of the poem is that hubris is absurd.
Mann has an immense amount of it, therefore absurd. Therefore my adaptation.
