Paul Ehrlich joins the Royal Society, rants on Twitter

Josh writes: “All the text Paul Ehrlich is saying comes from his recent tweets.

And the Bishop says “it’s a hoot”. I wonder where he got the idea that its was “the greatest snowstorm on record for the city” when no new records have been set?

As with abolition, it is devout Christians on the sharp end of this controversy. I point this out mainly to disarm critics who might be hesitant to explore this topic, when a fair portion of historical and factual information is from steeply Christian individuals and organizations, rather than from being exposed from some PhD’s dissertation.
This juxtaposition is uncomfortable for many of us educated, modern believers in “women’s rights,” and believers in the pro-choice point of view, and it can be difficult for some of us to hear that the “good guys” might actually be the “bad guys,” and that the religious-zealot “bad guys” might actually be the “good guys.”
^ This.
Christians, while disliked by many these days, see many important things that the highly educated fail to see. Just remember that the majority of them are on our side against those who would like to take our freedoms and our last remnants of democracy away.

The huge amount of snow in Portland is being pointed to as a sign of global warming. Fine.

#Climate disruption. Remember this when denier morons claim snow proves no warming. Just the opposite. #greed. http://bit.ly/Xiwu7G

My BIG problem with these people is that they point to record snow as a sign of global warming AND a lack of snow as a sign of global warming. Soooooo, if Scotland has record snow should we blame global warming? If yes, then what about a lack of snow? They want to have their cake and eat it, yet we are the morons.

Climate Impacts on the Winter Tourism Economy in the United States
The winter sports industry is deeply dependent upon predictable, heavy snowfall, but climate change is expected to contribute to warmer winters, reduced snowfall, and shorter snow seasons. The estimated $12.2 billion U.S. ski and snowmobile winter sports industry has already felt the direct impact of decreased winter snowpack and rising average winter temperatures.

Global warming could hurt Northwest skiing
Mount Hood Meadows outside of Portland could see rain instead of snow about seven times more often during the winter.

Ski resorts fight global warming; Utah gov unsure
SALT LAKE CITY — Ski resorts across the country used the Thanksgiving weekend to jump start their winter seasons, but with every passing year comes a frightening realization: If global temperatures continue to rise, fewer and fewer resorts will be able to open for the traditional beginning of ski season.

Thinning Snows In Rockies Tied To Global Warming
The snowpack in the Rocky Mountains has been gradually thinning over much of the past century, and a new study attributes much of that to global warming.

This year is a notable exception — unusually heavy snowfall throughout the Rockies this winter has caused a lot of flooding and water-management headaches downstream. But taking the long view, the trend is toward less and less snow.

CBS News – AP/ February 11, 2009
Global warming is threatening the world’s ski resorts, with melting at lower altitudes forcing the sport to move higher and higher up mountains, according to a new United Nations study.
Downhill skiing could disappear altogether at some resorts, while at others, a retreating snow line will cut off base villages from their ski runs as soon as 2030, warned the report by the U.N. Environment Program.
“Climate change is happening now. We can measure it,” said Klaus Toepfer, executive director of the U.N. program. “This study shows that it is not just the developing world that will suffer.”
The report, released Tuesday, focused on ski resorts in Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Australia, the United States and Canada, using temperature forecasts produced by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a body of some 2,000 scientists.

Ahhhh, bonny Scotland

Guardian – 3 December 2003
On the rocks: the grim forecast for winter sports as global warming increases
Glencoe, Scotland’s oldest ski resort will be closed this winter after the company running the lifts suspended operations for commercial reasons brought about by a lack of snow. Warmer temperatures in recent winters have seen all of Scotland’s five ski areas struggle, but Glencoe, which was the first commercial centre of its kind in the UK, has suffered the most and many observers do not expect it to reopen.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2003/dec/03/research.sciencenews

But, what’s this about Glencoe?

Guardian – 26 February 2010
Glencoe tops ski resort snow charts
“Historically, Scottish resorts have sometimes struggled for snow, but the past three or four years have been exceptionally good with snow lasting well into the spring.”
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/feb/26/skiing-snow-reports-glencoe

And so on…………………………Snowfall is now just a thing of the past.
They really, really do think we are stupid morons.

Does Paul Ehrlich think the IPCC are morons?

IPCC Climate Change 2007: Working Group II: Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability
……….In regions with winter snow, warming has shifted the magnitude and timing of hydrologic events (Mote et al., 2005; Regonda et al., 2005; Stewart et al., 2005). The fraction of annual precipitation falling as rain (rather than snow) increased at 74% of the weather stations studied in the western mountains of the U.S. from 1949 to 2004 (Knowles et al., 2006). In Canada, warming from 1900 to 2003 led to a decrease in total precipitation as snowfall in the west and Prairies (Vincent and Mekis, 2006)…………..

New York Times – May 21, 2011
Record Snowpacks Could Threaten Western States
In Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, plow operators are dealing with some of the deepest snow seen in years. Above, 23 feet of snow on Trail Ridge Road.
Thanks to a blizzard-filled winter and an unusually cold and wet spring, more than 90 measuring sites from Montana to New Mexico and California to Colorado have record snowpack totals on the ground for late May, according to a federal report released last week.

Less snow = global warming
More snow = global warming or climate change
Average snow = climate change

Like Noam Chomsky, Paul Ehrlich has been a poster-boy for extreme elitist tirades over some five decades. Acting from ill will, in bad faith under false pretenses, nothing Ehrlich says or does has any bearing on civilized or even rational discourse. Guilt-by-association may seem harsh, but with this announcement Nurse’s once distinguished and honorable Royal Society no longer “stands on the shoulders of giants” but ruts with Ehrlich’s porcine sycophants at AGW’s Holy Office trough.
