An Invitation

Readers will remember that at the end of March Anthony hosted a small dinner for the moderation staff and writers at a restaurant in San Francisco and posted about it here. A number of us couldn’t make it, so I proposed a summer-time get-together for those of us on the East Coast at my home on the Connecticut shore.

I am pleased to announce that the WUWT East Coasters Picnic will take place on Saturday, August 18 from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.. Several of the East Coast moderators and contributors plan to come and Anthony rearranged his schedule to be able to attend.

We would like to extend an invitation to our commenters to join us as well. I can accommodate an additional twenty or so guests. If you would like to attend and put a face to some of the names, just post your request and I will send you an e-mail. I’ll look forward to meeting you.

I was way more than happy to receive Bob Phelan’s invitation and look forward to meeting everyone.
I know many of you are concerned that I’ll have that nasty 1/2 hour Newfoundland-to-Connecticut jetlag. I initially tried to avoid it by riding my bicycle, but I ran into some water…everywhere I went. Who woulda thunk–NewfoundLAND is surrounded by NewfoundWATER. What are the chances? So I’m taking my kayak. You’ll be able to follow my progress here:

I will be at the cabin with my Aunt and Uncle in August and will see what I can drum up for next Summer. It would be all kinds of fun for those of us who live on the frontier to gather together and get all brainiac with each other, spend a day on two delicious rivers with spin rods, bait casters, and flyers, maybe spend some time on the shooting range outside of Enterprise, sample some wildlife (and deadlife on the BBQ), and visit some old time weather stations (which are not in the best of conditions).

I trust you’ll make better progress than the Arctic Row kids. They spent the better part of two days paddling north/south along the edge of the pack ice that they were positive had already disappeared…

And indeed as Matthew W. said, some heavy beers here have 8-10% alcohol, thus more used to enjoy after dinner, not if you need some fast drink because you are thirsty…
Give me a nice hefe weissbier and I’ll skip dessert every time!

Stairway Press would like to buy a round of drinks for the group or a bottle of wine or something…whatever is appropriate.
[REPLY: That’s very generous, Ken. Tried to send you an e-mail but you can’t reply to a twitter account. If you want to contribute, a donation to Anthony’s surface stations project would be appreciated. -REP]

Your invite give new meaning to the term “open forum”.
(For those of you that were concerned about the quality of the conversation, I won’t be able to make it.)
[REPLY: You would certainly add to the quality. Maybe next time…? -REP]

Tom in Florida says: “The proper pronunciation is ‘mootzarella’, make sure your trill the ‘r’.”
“Why did you include the “a” at the end?”
Because the proper pronunciation includes the “a”. I know you are addressing the way most of us say it, mootzarel or just mootz when ordering pizza…… “gimme a large mootz half sausage”.
When I first moved to Florida I ordered a delivery pizza from a place claiming they were from New York. I simply asked for a “large mootz”. The person on the other end had no idea what I meant.

Andrew Newberg says at 6:18 pm , you must be refering to the catch and release thing. I never have been in to that as I catch them to eat. But the fishing in that part of the country can be so good that you can catch a fish for everyone in your party in just a few minutes or even less if the big ones are hitting. To do so you either need to know private land owners like Pamela Gray or be willing to hike for a little ways. The fishing is good enough that I have yet to be dissapointed with my catch. I suppose if you wanted to you could use finess and fancy tackle but you can catch all you can eat with an old take down spinner. Last time out my father in law fed a party of seven with nine casts. If the fish doesn’t approach a pound you should throw it back as it’s a baby. One of his fish went close to three pounds and he never moved to change spots. So I really don’t know how good the fishing is at that spot hahaha.

Gosh, I’d love to come, but it is too far for a quick jaunt. I hope all you wonderful people attending have a marvelous time, and will be there with you in spirit. I’d love to meet you, REP. As a North Atlantic fisheries science historian stuck living on the Great Lakes I’m frankly envious of all you maritime coastal dwellers.
Valuable thread: I had no idea Bob Tisdale was a Newfie – they’re among the best people on earth! Happy kayaking!
[REPLY: Would have loved to have you join us. Your comments here have always been insightful and informative. -REP]

Unlike many other commenters, I live in the area (Manhattan, of all places). I would love to go if the event is not oversubscribed. Although not a frequent commenter, I have made a few contributions, including one that Anthony made into a post (“NYC: Denying the sea and Hansen’s sea level predictions,” 5/17/11).

Best wishes and huge thank you from us non-scientist skeptics in Charleston, SC. Hope this takes place on a cliff as the ocean here on my neighbor’s dock has already risen .02mm from the Greenland ice cap melting.

Depends how far along the connecticut shore in which direction whether this full time denier and occasional commentor from Rhode Island can make it. Have to be back in Providence that night, but maybe if you all pour out a little extra CO2 this week and the jet stream bounces north we can set up a kiteboarding demo out front to show you a better alternative for harnessing wind energy. Apologize for not having a jet ski to bring but I love extreme weather.

Would love to come and meet some of the astute regulars here, but I have this radio show,* and afterward am too tired to function without a nap. Sunday might have worked; I’m in eastern MA, so probably not too far (but probably too far to drive home after a few beers!). I’ll raise a couple of Smutty Nose IPAs, though, and toast the good company of WUWT Realists.
I’m wondering where on the ‘CT coast’, as I always relish the view from the windows of Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor trains from Westerly, RI south to NYC.

* “Hillbilly at Harvard,” honky-tonk country and bluegrass, WHRB-FM, Cambridge, MA (95.3), 9 AM – 1 PM Eastern, streaming at WHRB.org [shameless plug; aside from reading the weather forecast once or twice, absolutely nothing about climate]
[REPLY: Awww, sorry you can’t make it. I can sometimes make the trip to Roxbury in about 2 and a half hours. New Haven Station would be the closest Amtrak stop. In the late 60’s I worked the New York to Boston trains as a brakeman and baggage master. Civilized travel. I’ll try and listen for your show. -REP]

Thanks, REP! Would love to meet and chat sometime, as I’m a bit of a railfan. You must have worked for the New Haven, as Amtrak didn’t start until 1970; I’m impressed! Have you noticed the new legacy NH paint on locomotives in the yards in Connecticut? Saw a couple a few weeks ago on a trip down to DC and back.

[REPLY: Yes, the McGuiness colors. Both Metro North and Shoreline East are using them, I believe. There is quite a bit of nostalgia around here for the old New Haven. -REP]

I’m very saddened tonight by the news of Robert Phelan’s sudden passing.
