Dr. Michael Mann compares visitors to his Facebook Page to "Beetle Larvae"

They are the larvae of the huhu beetle, Prionoplus reticularis, the largest endemic beetle of New Zealand, a member of the longhorn beetle family Cerambycidae. The whitish larvae are up to millimetres ( ) long. They are edible and are said by some to taste like buttery chicken. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Some days, you get gifts from on high.

Dr. Michael Mann apparently still doesn’t understand how his own actions invoked the Streisand effect. So, he compares people asking questions to the larval form of insects.

Steve McIntyre tips us off to this and writes with the driest wit possible:

From time to time, we hear from climate scientists that they are limited in their responses by the dignity of their profession. The dignity to which climate scientists aspire is nicely exemplified by the following remarks of a prominent real_climate_scientist:

hey trolls who have been given marching orders to flood the comment threads here like an infestation of beetle larvae: Don’t bother! We’ve seen the mindless talking points before, and coming here to parrot them simply (a) pollutes the otherwise thoughtful discussion in the comment threads here, and (b) exposes the intellectual bankruptcy of your climate change denial zealotry.

Here’s the screencap:

I wonder, has Dr. Mann just libeled everyone whose comments he has been serially deleting? The best part is Steve McIntyre’s response, be sure to read it here.

In other news, it has now been 10 days since Mark Steyn wrote the article that ticked off Dr. Mann, and now the backlash has sent him scurrying for entomological comparisons for lack of any better arguments.

Since the Steyn article is still there, I suspect that NRO has told Dr. Mann and his attorney to “go fish”. Well, at least he’s having bait delivered.

I’m reminded of this quote from Dr. Roger Pielke Jr.:

“If Michael Mann did not exist, the skeptics would have to invent him.”

Stay classy Mike!

Apparently, Mann’s definition of thoughtful discussions are discussions with people who already agree with him. He defines everyone else as a troll and denier.

Mr. Mann, my marching orders come from facts and actual data.

Dr. Michael Mann shouldn’t have to debate “Beetle Larvae”, that’s why it’s so important for him to show the world that his theories can stand up to a real scientific debate by debating someone with full scientific credentials who disagrees with Dr. Mann’s conclusions.

He is a child and has childish tantrums, he thinks like a child and will kick back just like a child, when a youngster has lost the argument – in the little league it goes like, “Hey man! that ain’t fair, I’m taking my bat home!”

He didn’t use the Koch brothers dog whistle. How will his followers know when to feel mindless rage and exchange knowing glances? Disappointing 🙁

Unfortunately, it is far worse than you know. I hope to submit some articles to WUWT about that very subject that will pop your eyes. Most genuine environmentalists do not realize the extent to which the green movement has been subverted by an assortment of hard core Marxists, anarchists, eugenecists and others with an assortment of related agendas. They do not realize the extent to which they have been manipulated and used. When they do, things will change.
P.S. Don’t worry about threatening emails. Most of these guys are adolescent, Internet-bound, blowhards.

What does it tell you about Mike that he studiously deletes every hostile/questioning post on his Facebook site….then tells everyone about the legions of trolls attacking it?
If this is the quality of his ‘cover-up’ skills I think he has much to fear from a thorough investigation of his scientific practices!

This is important stuff, David. I look forward to reading your articles. The sooner people who really care about the environment learn how their emotions and genuine concerns are being used against all humanity, the better.

Dr Mann has a facebook page ? That tells me all I need to know about him. So does one put one’s facebook page number/citation/logo/whatever before, or after one’s PhD citation ? I’m not up on this teenager protocol stuff.

Lucy,
courtesy, truth, justice, humanity, and compassion
are HUMAN values. Green things, such as trees and frogs, do not have awareness of these things., These are HUMAN VALUES, for most humans, but not all. Chimpanzees do not discuss these things and the smallpox basillus does not give a damn.
Get with the program, Geenies. Meet reality. If you got smallpox, would you prefer to die or prefer to kill the basillus?

I pointed out Mann’s reliance on anti-skeptic book author Ross Gelbspan in my Dec 6 2011 WUWT comment http://wattsupwiththat.com/2011/12/06/mannx-tedx-and-all-that/#comment-821312 for his accusation that skeptic scientists are corrupted by fossil fuel industry money, an accusation that is not only groundless but potentially libel/slander on Gelbspan’s part. I find it positively stunning that Mann would risk diving into any kind of discussions of defamatory statements, considering how he would become a ‘deer caught in the headlights’ in trying to defend the ‘big coal & oil funding’ accusation. Why on Earth would he even want to draw attention to one of the weaker facets of the AGW issue?
If the public loses all faith in the idea that skeptic scientists are untrustworthy, ‘poof’ goes the whole issue just like a ponzi scheme. “The End is Near for Faith in AGW” http://wattsupwiththat.com/2011/06/25/the-end-is-near-for-faith-in-agw/

In a way it’s good that the scientific discussion has descended to that of the days of “continental drift” and the glacial lake-flooded scouring of the high plains. In the US atleast, the threat of climate legislation is distant, and we have only the angry back and forth of the scientists to use us.

[cross-posted with BH] Mann cannot dare to allow serious legal and public attention to his record. He’s not that crazy.

I wouldn’t bet on it. He just might be narcissistic enough.
