That quote from president Obama tonight. The story here
“Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet” – Afghan proverb
UPDATE #3: Zeroing in on the compound. Threes a charm. Like anything in the fog of war, early reports can be erroneous. The first two seemed plausible, especially the second one with the high walls. Now the official Google Earth Blog weighs in:
[UPDATE: The location has essentially been confirmed by the BBC
(via Ogle Earth).] You can fly there with this KML file
or view the image below:

Lat/lon 34.169314° 73.242304° see it on Google Maps
The Pentagon has released this photo, which matches:
A powerpoint from the Pentagon is here (PDF) which shows the details.

UPDATE: I have the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan mapped on Google Earth below:
Lat/Lon 34.146371° 73.216925° Google Maps It sure looks like a fortress. I’m betting they special forces landed the copters in the field to the east, near the blue roofed building, which is the Government Post Graduate College No.1 Another view here

===============================================================
UPDATE2: The Atlantic’s story was wrong, here is the (likely) correct location:
Lat/lon 34.187663° 73.242617° See it on Google Maps

Here it is with the PMA Kakul Military academy mentioned in news reports h/t to Ryan Maue:

Wikipedia has already made an update about the PMA Kakul Military academy:
In May 2011, the US military conducted a raid and killed Osama bin Laden in a compound less than 1 km from Burn Hall Army Academy in Abbottabad. Burn Hall is a junior academy that feeds the Pakistan Military Academy. Bin Laden’s extended refuge near the academy is cited as evidence of the Pakistani government’s collusion with al Qaeda.
That places the compound back near the city center where we originally placed it from reports by The Atlantic. The compound originally identified din’t quite match the news reports.(see image below).
The imagery of the compound above described as “very high walled” matches the image of the white building and the tall white walls around it. I also just saw some helmet cam video of the scene in flames, and the white walls were visible.
The Google added red pointer location for OBL’s compound Abottabad in their database in the images above was originally near the city center, See below for the original placment Google had. But the pointer lat/lon has been updated within the last hour to the new location near PMA Kakul shown above. I think the locations above are correct, as they match news accounts much better.

Jim, It makes sense now why Benazir Bhutto would say Bin Laden was dead, they were hiding him and Pakistan was just looking for him for appearances sake?
This story has a very odd taste to it.
Why was the body buried hastily at sea?
Reminds me of a WWII story about a body planted by submarine with a false identity.
When does the movie come out?
I’ll believe it when the body is presented for a detailed autopsy. Anything other than that would be suspect.

“Tonight it emerged that bin Laden had been buried at sea”
My skeptic sense is tingling…
Looks like he was living in a Pakistani Govm’t safe house. And that he’s been there for years. The most critical thing that the US did right was to *not* breathe a word of this to the Paki’s until after this operation was over.
and near a military academy? This is like a US fugitive being found in a mansion just around the corner from West Point. Sounds like something you give to senior staff.
Actually the Gulf War of 1991 had never ended. No treaty ending the war was ever signed. A cease-fire agreement ended the hostilities. The terms of the agreement were clearly violated with the United Nations issuing warning after warning and sanction after sancton for violations of the agreement. Thus the U.S. was not only still legally at war with Iraq in 2003 but also able to legally engage in hostile actions according to international law. I defy you to identify any other sovereign nation in the world which goes to such trouble and expense as the United States to limit civilian casualties in war through both limiting targets to those where there high confidence of military relevance and precision guided tactical weapons. Moreover I defy you to name another sovereign nation which goes to such expense in helping a defeated nation to rebuild and rejoin the international community.
‘Grant Hillemeyer says:

Outstanding. The fact that we was living in a mansion near Pakistan’s capital is disturbing, but not surprising. I remember back after September 11th thinking they would get him some day. I’m glad they didn’t give up. I think everyone one in America wished they were with that group that killed him. Imagine that.’
This statement says a lot about the American character.
One wonders what Americans would feel about Iraqis whose families were butchered to death vowing vengeance on America, or the Japanese vowing to build a nuclear bomb to wipe out two American Cities, had those nations showed the same vengeful outbursts in times gone by.
It’s a question civilised America must find an answer to and find one soon.
Because the millions of barbaric Americans have totally turned off the rest of the world with the way they see THEIR dead as outrageous but the deaths of any other nation as acceptable collateral damage.
You lost your moral leadership of the world after 9/11 and you show no signs of getting it back with statements like this.
I’m sure you Americans don’t care, but more and more people no longer care if Americans get killed as a result.
Time for an armistice and truth instead of the bellicose outbursts of animalistic savagery, perhaps??
Next target, al-Zawahiri, after him, the traitor Adam Gadhan.
Have not even a tiny bit of skepticism. It’s too important.
Keith in Perth says:

but Keith consider :
Guilty – by his own admission – enough for a trial in absentia. Guilty of mass murder.
also – he was a self admitted terrorist AND he had ‘declared war’ on the west. (the fact a private citizen can not declare war; a prerogative reserved to States is a mote point). So he is also guilty of war crimes; and crimes against humanity.
So – if a state of war existed between AQ & the US/UK/Spain/ etc then he becomes a military target. I think a damned good case of ‘Hot Pursuit’ could be made – which means this action HAS the approval of the UN (Hot Pursuit being explicitly allowed by the UN where the nation state can not or will not take action). After all the man was still actively behaving as a military commander. So what crime would you have Interpol arraign him for ?
So the UN is (according to its articles) in agreement with the US action; the Pakistanis have demonstrated they are unable to deal with AQ; and no civil crimes have been committed. No UN involvement needed; no Interpol interest; and Pakistan could not deal with ‘unauthorised military action from their sovereign territory.
Terrorists should be treated like pirates; executed on sight – and if you publicly claim to be a terrorist then that admittance should be taken on face value and you should then suffer the consequences when you are located.
AQ and OBL refused to acknowledge the rule of (Western) civilized law; why do people constantly try to pretend we should deal with such people on other than their own terms ? He has been treated in EXACTLY the same way he would treat you or me. Unless you are Islamic you, as well as me, were his declared enemies; what is so hard to understand about their nihilistic philosophy; they have stated time after time – and acted to prove they mean what they say – that they believe in death BY ANY MEANS to their enemies. And their enemies are any one who is NOT Islamic; and quite a few who are Islamic.
I refuse to accept that someone who declares frequently that civilized laws do not apply to his actions has any right to be treated under the terms of the legal system/government/philosophy that they refuse to acknowledge. If OBL wanted a fair trail under Western style jurisprudence all he had to do was renounce his interpretation of Islamic Shari-ah Law. But I suspect there will be people who will say he has a ‘human right’ to hold his beliefs – which is more sacrosanct than the human right of everyone else to not be murdered by petty tyrants and ideologues.
Yes it may well be revenge; something OBL’s own philosophy APPROVES of and heartily endorses as correct action.
So the correct response to the screams of outrage that will shortly be orchestrated by the useful idiots and western hating fellow travellers ; is merely to point out that ‘he was done to as he demanded he had the right to do to others’
I am pleasantly surprised that Pres. Obama actually approved this action ! Well done the Yanks !

Inside the Operation That Brought Down Osama Bin Laden – ABC News
http://abcnews.go.com/m/story?id=13506413&sid=3029941
…Remarkably, Bin Laden was hiding almost under the nose of the Pakistani military, which has a major garrison in Abbottabad and the Pakistani version of West Point.
U.S. officials say Pakistan was not informed in advance of the military operation inside their borders…
The US does not bow to “international law” and should never, ever.
White House will post a digital image of Osama’s death certificate.
Bill O’Reilly and The Wall Street Journal editorial will say that if you don’t believe it, you are a pinhead, a nutcase, and a retrograde.
Case closed.

Yes, indeed! This is a great day for the world. Thank you president Obama (and president Bush) and the brave Navy Seals who bagged OBL:
“On April 29, Obama approved an operation to kill bin Laden. It was a mission that required surgical accuracy, even more precision than could be delivered by the government’s sophisticated Predator drones. To execute it, Obama tapped a small contingent of the Navy’s elite SEAL Team Six and put them under the command of CIA Director Leon Panetta, whose analysts monitored the compound from afar.”

Finally! We got him.
Question. The image date in the lower left hand corner reads “3/22/2001”. Is this correct? Because if it is, then the location of the compound might be correct but from reports this morning the compound was built around 2005 so the buildings shown wouldn’t be what was raided Sunday.
Just wondering.
@John Johnston:
Dr. Spencer’s site is out of Huntsville, AL, which took a big hit from the tornadoes last week. I’m pretty sure their power is still out, or limited, and getting power to web servers is probably pretty low on the list of things to do. It might be a few more days before he’s back on line.
Medical Miracle: Dialysis man survives 11 years on the run in mountainous terrain

By Rady Ananda The White House announced tonight in a special mystery broadcast that US bombs killed Osama bin Laden last week. Amazing. Not that Obama is lying, nor that Osama is dead. But that a man on dialysis since at least 2000, on the run from the most technologically advanced military in human history, […]

Rady has a valid point…so much for the dialysis etc? smells fishy to me,
and I hear they don’t plan to leave anytime soon.
militsry munitions is your growing business, almost the only one..so they need to keep em busy. now Biden wants to land us troops in Libya.
False flags abound in us politics.
Good work. Pakistan ISI was likely in on 9/11 and harbored bin Laden. At this point, we can conclude this given the evidence.
So – he wasn’t holed up in a cave somewhere on the Pakistan/Afghanistan border – but living in some comfort with his family around him – and I’m betting with at least one American air conditioner to keep them all cool..!
No phone..? No internet..? Surely SOMEONE in authority in Pakistan knew who it was in there – no tax records or ANYTHING..??
Curious contradiction…..
The Google image with the “correct” location shows a date of 3/22/2001, but news articles are saying that the house was built in 2005???
The lower image with the expanded area shows an image date of 2005….Not to be picky, but…you know how picky we are around here about details.
My cousin was on the USS Cole. she had skipped chow. Saved her life. The Paks hav esome ‘splainin’ to do. We are not done with this thing. I have known a few SEAL
team members over the years. This is a good thing.
