"Justice has been done" – UPDATE: Osama Bin Laden compound found on Google Earth

That quote from president Obama tonight. The story here

“Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet” – Afghan proverb

UPDATE #3: Zeroing in on the compound. Threes a charm. Like anything in the fog of war, early reports can be erroneous. The first two seemed plausible, especially the second one with the high walls. Now the official Google Earth Blog weighs in:

[UPDATE: The location has essentially been confirmed by the BBC

(via Ogle Earth).] You can fly there with this KML file or view the image below:

The Pentagon has released this photo, which matches:

A powerpoint from the Pentagon is here (PDF) which shows the details.

UPDATE: I have the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan mapped on Google Earth below:

Lat/Lon  34.146371°  73.216925°  Google Maps  It sure looks like a fortress. I’m betting they special forces landed the copters in the field to the east, near the blue roofed building, which is the Government Post Graduate College No.1 Another view here

UPDATE2: The Atlantic’s story was wrong, here is the (likely) correct location:

Lat/lon 34.187663° 73.242617° See it on Google Maps

Here it is with the PMA Kakul Military academy mentioned in news reports h/t to Ryan Maue:

Wikipedia has already made an update about the PMA Kakul Military academy:

In May 2011, the US military conducted a raid and killed Osama bin Laden in a compound less than 1 km from Burn Hall Army Academy in Abbottabad. Burn Hall is a junior academy that feeds the Pakistan Military Academy. Bin Laden’s extended refuge near the academy is cited as evidence of the Pakistani government’s collusion with al Qaeda.

That places the compound back near the city center where we originally placed it from reports by The Atlantic. The compound originally identified din’t quite match the news reports.(see image below).

The imagery of the compound above described as “very high walled” matches the image of the white building and the tall white walls around it. I also just saw some helmet cam video of the scene in flames, and the white walls were visible.

The Google added red pointer location for OBL’s compound Abottabad in their database in the images above was originally near the city center, See below for the original placment Google had. But the pointer lat/lon has been updated within the last hour to the new location near PMA Kakul shown above. I think the locations above are correct, as they match news accounts much better.

There’s a McDonald’s less than a mile away to the WSW.

@hotrod: Great news he’s dead, the (civilized) world will be celebrating, but on your point about war, if you’re right why aren’t the prisoners treated according to the Geneva Convention.

Are they going to post a PDF of Osama’s death cirtificate?

Per Matt Drudge:
CNN is reporting that bin Laden’s body as already been buried at sea.

Obami needs the good press for his campaign, hence the delay in announcing the deed until a crowd could be gathered outside the White House to sing and cheer and provide film for the media.

Fire on the compound could be the US helicopter that crashed at the location and not the compound itself.

The president spent part of the day on the golf course… The U.S. team took custody of bin Laden’s remains, which American officials said were being handled in accordance with Islamic tradition.
I would have preferred General “Black Jack” Pershing’s tradition…

It is important that we remember that this man was a mass murderer who killed more Americans than the Japanese fleet killed at both Pearl Harbor and Midway combined.

Justice done, which would not have been the case if anyone other than the US military had been involved.
Scotland would have let the poor diabetic Bin Laden off for ‘humanitarian relief (*cough, cough* OIL contract) reasons’, and the UN would probably have appointed him to the IPCC, the open seat on the human rights panel having already been promised to Syria.
Waltz on, GI Joe, waltz on.

A large white-walled compound six blocks from a Pakistani military installation and the Pakistani military they didn’t know about it and exactly what it was. Come on! Sure they knew.

I do not care about the justice of killing him, without trial or procedure. I am just glad the bastard is dead. There was no trial or procedure in the way he killed innocent people.

Just a ps. on the Geneva / POW remark.
The rules only apply after you have accepted the surrender of an combattant.
You don’t have to accept an surrender if it is offered (danger to your self/others etc.)
In the middle of an firefight you don’t stop shooting till you or the other guy is down and you always go for centermass / headshot.

This operation was done all wrong. They should have taken him alive, drugged him then photographed him in compromise with some transvestites… then held him in seclusion or quietly executed him… NOT a single Muslim would have praised him or followed in his footsteps… instead, he will be sold to terrorist recruits as a martyr who went down in a blaze of glory.
This President is only going to cost more American lives

Crosspatch, unless Bin Laden had major surgery changing the BONE STRUCTURE in his face the picture in the Mail was not him. I think I would take anything they report with a grain or bucket of salt.
We only lost 307 men to Japan’s 4800 at Midway. Trying to be just a little dramatic?? Why don’t you compare the percentage of population killed by the Japanese to the percentage of population killed by Al Qaeda??? Oh yeah, that wouldn’t be nearly as dramatic.
http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Terrorism/usvictims.html
Count the number of attacks by Al Qaeda in this list compared to the attacks by other groups. Except for one big one it would seem Al Qaeda didn’t do squat. Try looking at the rest and see who organizes and supports them. Al Qaeda was and is just one of many problems we have.
Bin Laden being shot is a loss as we are guaranteed no information out of him!!! Our Prez Obie screwed up again.

Another U.S. official told CNN that bin Laden has already been buried at sea. The official said his body was handled in the Islamic tradition, but did not elaborate.
A senior administration official also said bin Laden’s body would be “handled in accordance with Islamic practice and tradition. This is something that we take very seriously, and so therefore this is being handled in an appropriate manner.”

…can’t say that I’d be as politically correct as this Administration if I were in charge of the memorial service….oh well, the bastard’s dead, good riddance.

Mike Bromley the Kurd: “In reference to what?”
Well, it may sound unpopular to some ears but the freshly and happily killed Osama bin Laden has still been the world’s most influential climate alarmist, exciting a billion of enthusiastic followers.

The linked image was on the internet months before today.
Ignoring the link I give, it is not Osama, who in his last pictures/videos ten years ago looked gray and emaciated like an el greco figure.
Why the hurry to bury the body at sea? so that no DNA can be done ?
Personally I believe that he has been dead for a long time, Benazir Butto also had said so, and just kept as a bogey figure by the US for its own political ends. Some years ago they were showing pictures of bearded men that in no way even resembled Osama. I guess to the US eyes any dark man with a bear is an Osama look alike.

There are too many questions about this. Keywords: stun grenades, taser, intel gathering, enhanced interrogation techniques, deltas (not seals) etc.

Can’t blame President Urkel for taking credit, even though it wasn’t his doing because he likes him his Arab supporters. Now the question is finally answered – which should totally confuse Obama’s Democrat supporters.
Obama’s next target, the gound zero mosque, which will take the spotlight off of the real problem: outrageously high gasoline prices.
Thanks to our superb militrary, President Obama can now take time off his golfing vacations to make bin Laden’s deserved come-uppance into a self-serving campaign event.
