From the NOAA National Weather Service Office in Miami comes this year end report:
2010 South Florida Weather Year in Review
Coldest December on Record Concludes Year of Extremes
December 30th, 2010: Temperature and precipitation extremes marked the weather of 2010 across South Florida. A cool and wet January through March was followed by the hottest summer on record, and then concluded with the coldest December on record for the main climate sites in South Florida (details on the above mentioned periods will be included below).
Here are December 2010 temperature averages for select sites (through 7 AM Dec 30th):
* Location of observations for each location have moved since the first year of record, but are representative of the city for record keeping purposes.
** Present Miami Beach and Moore Haven temperature data may not be totally comparable to historical data due to difference in time of daily reports which causes double-reporting of low temperatures.
Complete statistics of the record cold December for all sites above (except Moore Haven) will be provided in Record Reports which will be issued early on Jan 1, 2011.
The main culprit behind the cold temperatures in December 2010 was the same one which caused the cold winter of 2009-2010; a strongly negative North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and Arctic Oscillation (AO). When these atmospheric oscillations are in the strong negative phase, they essentially “flip” the weather pattern across North America, with upper-level high pressure and relative warmth over Greenland and Northeastern Canada and upper-level low pressure and cold over the eastern Continental United States, including Florida (Figure 1). This pattern forces the jet stream to plunge south from northern Canada into the southeastern U.S., transporting Arctic air masses into Florida.
A pronounced shift in the ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) phase was noted in 2010, from a strong El Niño, or warm, phase to a borderline strong La Niña, or cold, phase. While this may appear at first glance to be a key contributor to the temperature extremes noted across South Florida during 2010, it is believed that it was the strongly negative NAO and AO, not the ENSO phase, which contributed to the cold temperatures in early and late 2010. A strongly phased NAO/AO operating on shorter time scales can override the longer-term ENSO phase.
As mentioned above, South Florida experienced its hottest summer on record in 2010 (with the exception of Naples which recorded its second hottest recorded summer). Despite the record hot summer, average yearly temperatures at the main climate sites will end up around 1 degree below normal, which will be the coolest calendar year since the early and mid 1980s, and among the top 10 on record (except for Miami). At secondary sites Miami Beach and Moore Haven, it was the coolest year on record (please note caveat below table).
Here are the 2010 temperature averages for the year for the primary climate sites through December 29:
** Present Miami Beach and Moore Haven temperature data may not be totally comparable to historical data due to difference in time of daily reports which causes double-reporting of low temperatures.
Some other interesting 2010 temperature statistics:
– Miami International Airport (MIA) observed 103 days of temperatures at or above 90 degrees, the 4th most on record. The average number of 90+ degree days per year is 51. MIA also had a record 45 days of low temperatures of 80 degrees or higher, besting the previous record of 39 set in 2009. The average number of 80+ degree low temperature days per year is 13. On the other end of the thermometer, MIA had 6 mornings with low temperatures below 40 degrees. This ties the 5th most number of sub-40 degree days on record. The average yearly number of sub-40 degree days is 2.
– Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL) observed 9 days of low temperatures below 40 degrees. This ties the 4th most number of sub-40 degree days on record. The average yearly number of sub-40 degree days is 3.
– Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) observed 106 days of temperatures at or above 90 degrees, the 8th most on record. The average number of 90+ degree days per year is 56. PBI also had a record 34 days of low temperatures of 80 degrees or higher, crushing the previous record of 17 set in 1900 and 2002. The average number of 80+ degree low temperature days per year is 6. On the other end of the thermometer, PBI had 18 mornings with low temperatures below 40 degrees. This easily breaks the previous record of 10 days set in 1920 and 1981. The average yearly number of sub-40 lows at PBI is 3. Six of the 18 days occurred in December, which breaks the previous monthly record for December of 5 set in 1962.
– Naples Regional Airport (APF) observed 125 days of temperatures at or above 90 degrees, the 12th most on record. The average number of 90+ degree days per year is 109. Naples also observed 13 days of low temperatures below 40 degrees. This ties the 5th most number of sub-40 degree days on record. The average yearly number of sub-40 degree days is 3. Eight of the 13 days occurred in December, which breaks the previous monthly record for December of 7 set in 1981.

Avery;
The energy crisis is over:

And very few species go extinct; those are bone-head extrapolations by ecologists “models” jammed with parameters and assumptions. (Sound familiar?) Actual known extinctions in the last century are about a dozen. And hundreds, or thousands, of new species have been discovered in that time. So actual DATA (ever heard of it) is not on your side.
Jenkins;
Don’t sweat it. Warming good, cooling bad. The proof will unfortunately come in the coming 30 yrs. of cold.
You think its been bad over there for us in the uk its been the coldest winter for a hundred years so much for global warming.
I think I understand it now that it has been explained to me so many times. “Global Warming” makes it cold. “Scientists” who get massive grants to manipulate the data told us this. Previous climate changes before modern man does not apply, as no one was able to enrichen themselves with grants nor carbon credits.
The Goreacle is my preacher and climate change is my religion. Any man who can invent the iternet, invent global warming, invent climate change, invent carbon credits, and become extremely rich on the con jobs without being convicted of fraud is a god to the mindless sheeples of the world. I understand he can not and will not debate in public, for his words are not to be questioned. He deserves his multiple mansions, his SUVs, his global travels in private jumbo jets, assaulting massage therapists so his “chakra” is soothed, for he is the left’s one and only Goreacle.
His wife should be burned at the stake or stoned in the village square for leaving this modern day messiah of leftism. All Hail The Goreacle!
All you flat earthers, all signs are clearly pointing towards catastrophic global warming events. Please rent or buy a inconvenient truth or the day after tomorrow in order to get your facts about the current climate problem. Nobel laureate and leading climate scientist Al Gore has brilliantly predicted this would happen. If you don’t believe a Oscar winning Film and a Nobel Peace prize recipient then you all must be stooopid. That’s it just to dumb to know better. We TELL you what to believe. See this is why we cant have you reading non approved books. We have a spent a great deal of money carefully changing facts, hiding dissent, ridiculing opposition, skewing charts and graphs and rewriting history in order to show that global warming / climate change is real. You must get your education from government approved centers and government certified educators.
[/sarchasm ? – That gaping whole between an extremist and reality. 8<) Robt]
Al Gore and Mike Moore wrong again…..but they got you tree hugging idiots to spend money on their movies.
Jimbo,
PLEASE dont go throwing the discredited astrophysicist ( Hansen) with his political agenda into the mix…
This study is published in the “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences” and was authored by Jasper Kok.
“The study’s key conclusion was to show that the ratio of small soil dust particles (clay), which cool the atmosphere, to large soil dust particles (silt), which yield an indirect heating effect, may be much higher than previous estimated. This is a critical finding because it shows that the Earth’s climate may be much more sensitive to solar radiation than previous models have indicated, which in turn casts doubt on anthropogenic warming theory — the idea that human carbon dioxide emissions bear the primary warming influence on the climate over the last several decades.”

Though many people still refuse to believe their lyin’ eyes, global warming is a scam. At the root of this scam is the desire for money, power and control. This is an evil world and it’s controlled by a tiny percentage of evil individuals who have the morals of the Third Reich.
WWF tours Northern Manitoba with Coca Cola exec in November amid concern for Polar Bear plight in lieu of AGW related lack of ice in Hudson Bay. Wow! Apparently, Coca Cola execs are very concerned about Polar Bears. Wow! A polar bear swigging a coke.
The WWF has been working this ruse for many years and they keep finding suckers. Hudson Bay represents the extreme southern range of the polar bear. it is a huge body of water that becomes totally ice free during the summer, a real bummer for the polar bear. The bears are reduced to wandering along the shore throughout the summer basically scavenging unlike polar bears in the high arctic where vast ice pack and food are plentiful all summer.
Because Hudson Bay is an immense heat sink it takes a long time to freeze. If you head up there in November you’re likely to find polar bears in a poor state, anxiously waiting for ice up.
The WWF and the rest of the AGW clowns have all promoted the plight of the polar bear. The truth is, Polar Bear numbers and their range have been increasing. Hudson Bay in Northern Manitoba is a very marginal environment for this bear. check out how far south it is relative to their overall range. You’d think someone from Coca Cola would be smart enough to figure out when they’re being had. If they know better and are just doing it for a little PR they need some new management.
Will the Climate Change Evangelists please tell us what weather events are NOT proof of climate change?
here’s hoping that Al Gore has a little Rev Jim Jones in him … population “bomb” solved, never was about ‘warming’ anyhow, they must eradicate the human parasites
It seems that many on this blog still don’t believe that American government policy and paying more taxes can change the climate of the entire planet. I’m shocked. How politically incorrect of you!!!
I read the article about taking the executives to see the Polar BEars and how the Polar bears can’t get into the water unless there is Ice there ( They Can’t ?), and how they can’t travel north because THERE ARE ALREADY MANY BEARS THERE .
But I found this part extra funny:
“Coca-Cola said it is committed to reducing its environmental footprint, through initiatives such as the introduction of Canada’s first heavy-duty hybrid-electric trucks. The beverage company is aiming for a five-per-cent reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions over the next five years and is also hoping to raise awareness in advertising for others to do the same. ”
Are they aware of the composition of their product ?
Whole factories CREATE CO2 just to put into the Coke !
Another day goes by and as I type this at 11:28 AM, Melbourne temp is an even cooler 16C.
If this trend continues we can expect to see a glacier forming at the end of smacca’s street in the very near future 😉
Northern India is getting very cold too:
“3 January 2011 Last updated at 05:08 GMT
India shivers in deadly cold snap.
Trucks stranded in the snow in Indian-administered Kashmir Indian-administered Kashmir has been hardest hit by the cold weather
An intense spell of cold weather has disrupted life across northern India, reportedly claiming two dozen lives.
The capital, Delhi, has been hit worst by the cold snap, along with Indian-administered Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.
In Leh in Kashmir, temperatures dropped to -23.6C – this winter’s lowest – on Sunday, weather officials said.
Delhi, which is experiencing one of its coldest winters in years, has been hit by thick fog which disrupted flights.
Sunday was Delhi’s coldest day this winter with temperatures dipping to 7.8C – cold by the standards of the Indian capital.
Indian homes rarely have central heating – a regular feature in buildings in the West.
The cold wave is being felt most intensely in Kashmir with the summer capital, Srinagar, recording sub-zero temperatures.
The highway linking Kashmir with the rest of India has been shut due to snowfall, officials said.
Homeless people have taken to gathering around street fires to try to keep warm and the night shelters for the poor in Delhi are overflowing.
Five more people – including a 70-year-old man and a two year-old boy – suffered cold-related deaths in Uttar Pradesh, reports said.
The Press Trust of India news agency reported three more cold-related deaths in Indian-administered Kashmir.”

If SteveInBrooklyn can claim to have invented the term “global moroning”, then I claim inventing the term Gorebull Warming.
Again confusing local weather with global climate. This is called weather extremes, predicted as a result of climate change. I suppose you all think that the melting of nearly all of the glaciers in Glacier National Park is due to increasing cold weather. News flash ice and glaciers melt when the average temperature warms. The Montana park has 26 named glaciers today, down from 150 in 1850.
Oh, give it a rest, Triton.
After all, the global warmists are now scrambling to claim that the record and near record cold temperatures of this past month that were not just experienced as “local weather” but occurred in numerous places around the Northern Hemisphere were the result of global warming. Naturally.
So if that is the case, then the melting glaciers in Glacier National Park must surely be a sign of global cooling! Either that, or perhaps they happened due to the “record” levels of sunspot activity in the late 19th and the 20th centuries? What do you think? Sounds reasonable to me.
Oh, that’s right, I forgot, sorry about that. Climate change is not at all normal and is not supposed to happen, right? And if it happens then it must be the fault of human beings, right? So never mind what the Sun is doing because that doesn’t count and it has nothing to do with Earth’s climatic conditions.
Sorry, I forgot that glaciers do not melt unless humans and our carbon emissions are responsible for it. Before we came along with our burning of carbon-based fuels and our plastic shopping bags, no glaciers ever melted.
