From the NOAA National Weather Service Office in Miami comes this year end report:

2010 South Florida Weather Year in Review

Coldest December on Record Concludes Year of Extremes

December 30th, 2010: Temperature and precipitation extremes marked the weather of 2010 across South Florida. A cool and wet January through March was followed by the hottest summer on record, and then concluded with the coldest December on record for the main climate sites in South Florida (details on the above mentioned periods will be included below).

Here are December 2010 temperature averages for select sites (through 7 AM Dec 30th):

* Location of observations for each location have moved since the first year of record, but are representative of the city for record keeping purposes.

** Present Miami Beach and Moore Haven temperature data may not be totally comparable to historical data due to difference in time of daily reports which causes double-reporting of low temperatures.

Complete statistics of the record cold December for all sites above (except Moore Haven) will be provided in Record Reports which will be issued early on Jan 1, 2011.

The main culprit behind the cold temperatures in December 2010 was the same one which caused the cold winter of 2009-2010; a strongly negative North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and Arctic Oscillation (AO). When these atmospheric oscillations are in the strong negative phase, they essentially “flip” the weather pattern across North America, with upper-level high pressure and relative warmth over Greenland and Northeastern Canada and upper-level low pressure and cold over the eastern Continental United States, including Florida (Figure 1). This pattern forces the jet stream to plunge south from northern Canada into the southeastern U.S., transporting Arctic air masses into Florida.

A pronounced shift in the ENSO (El Niño Southern Oscillation) phase was noted in 2010, from a strong El Niño, or warm, phase to a borderline strong La Niña, or cold, phase. While this may appear at first glance to be a key contributor to the temperature extremes noted across South Florida during 2010, it is believed that it was the strongly negative NAO and AO, not the ENSO phase, which contributed to the cold temperatures in early and late 2010. A strongly phased NAO/AO operating on shorter time scales can override the longer-term ENSO phase.

As mentioned above, South Florida experienced its hottest summer on record in 2010 (with the exception of Naples which recorded its second hottest recorded summer). Despite the record hot summer, average yearly temperatures at the main climate sites will end up around 1 degree below normal, which will be the coolest calendar year since the early and mid 1980s, and among the top 10 on record (except for Miami). At secondary sites Miami Beach and Moore Haven, it was the coolest year on record (please note caveat below table).

Here are the 2010 temperature averages for the year for the primary climate sites through December 29:

** Present Miami Beach and Moore Haven temperature data may not be totally comparable to historical data due to difference in time of daily reports which causes double-reporting of low temperatures.

Some other interesting 2010 temperature statistics:

– Miami International Airport (MIA) observed 103 days of temperatures at or above 90 degrees, the 4th most on record. The average number of 90+ degree days per year is 51. MIA also had a record 45 days of low temperatures of 80 degrees or higher, besting the previous record of 39 set in 2009. The average number of 80+ degree low temperature days per year is 13. On the other end of the thermometer, MIA had 6 mornings with low temperatures below 40 degrees. This ties the 5th most number of sub-40 degree days on record. The average yearly number of sub-40 degree days is 2.

– Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport (FLL) observed 9 days of low temperatures below 40 degrees. This ties the 4th most number of sub-40 degree days on record. The average yearly number of sub-40 degree days is 3.

– Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) observed 106 days of temperatures at or above 90 degrees, the 8th most on record. The average number of 90+ degree days per year is 56. PBI also had a record 34 days of low temperatures of 80 degrees or higher, crushing the previous record of 17 set in 1900 and 2002. The average number of 80+ degree low temperature days per year is 6. On the other end of the thermometer, PBI had 18 mornings with low temperatures below 40 degrees. This easily breaks the previous record of 10 days set in 1920 and 1981. The average yearly number of sub-40 lows at PBI is 3. Six of the 18 days occurred in December, which breaks the previous monthly record for December of 5 set in 1962.

– Naples Regional Airport (APF) observed 125 days of temperatures at or above 90 degrees, the 12th most on record. The average number of 90+ degree days per year is 109. Naples also observed 13 days of low temperatures below 40 degrees. This ties the 5th most number of sub-40 degree days on record. The average yearly number of sub-40 degree days is 3. Eight of the 13 days occurred in December, which breaks the previous monthly record for December of 7 set in 1981.

The reason it is so cold must be global warming.

The weather seems to move from its normal patterns. The cold weather is moving towards equator and the warmth is moving to north pole. So that tells us the earth’s rotation may have something to do with that in relation to sun.

Folks seem to be missing the Forrest for the trees. Don’t let your denial of trust in mainstream scientist regarding climate change get in the way of the fact that the equivalent of two new China size populations will occupy the planet with us in a mere forty years. Do you really think we can just sit back and change nothing?

Charlatans are common in history. Some hoaxes are revealed early before any harm is done, but the AGW hoax is pure evil. The lazy-minded political zombies who run with the herd like lemmings are best disregarded. They are lost. The creators and promoters of false science are dangerous, however, and should be identified, discredited and prosecuted quickly, before their lunacy kills more people.

Global Temperature is an abstraction that does not exist in the real world. There is simply no method for identifying which of the earth’s countless molecules are included and which are excluded from the set it purportedly would represent.
Additionally, there is no scientifically meaningful or definable criteria for even establishing such a subset of the earth’s molecules. Finally, there is no known instrumentation for measuring the thermal energy of any large subsets of the earth’s surface or near surface molecules.
In short “global temperature” is a fiction dreamed up by charlatans and fraudsters preying upon the freedom of a people, now too dumbed-down by government education to retain their freedom any longer.
We are toasted, not by carbon, but by our own ignorance and gullibility. It’s the only lesson of history worth noting.

The global warming scam is one of the most despicable ploys pandering to the fears of a weak, spoiled and ignorant population who still see monsters in their closet. It’s all about the funding , folks, as Climate gate revealed. Here’s a fact you don’t see trumpeted by the leftwing nanny staters. The Icelandic volcano which erupted last summer produced more carbon emissions in ONE DAY than all the coal powered plants on earth do in ONE YEAR. Man made carbon is NOT A PROBLEM.

Oh, so many busybodies that think they know it all! It’s a shame that so many self important people buy into the false science of climate change just to make themselves feel smart. And all the while, you are all just buying into the “redistribution of wealth” policies of the greedy, selfish, self-important so called “leaders” that have pushed this agenda along so gradually. With all your intelligence, you all are so blind to see that the road you are on has a street sign that clearly says Communist Ave. And for those of you that aware of the street sign, Communism has destroyed more lives than your climate change ever will. It is NOT a good thing.

It all makes sense. The next time a farmer has flooded fields, tell him that it’s proof that a dry spell is just around the corner, kilewise, when the land is dry, tell him that it’s a sign of floods.
What a crock.

Global warming is an absolute fraud, all you have to do is follow the money trail and see who stands to gain from carbon taxes and trading. The oil companies love this stuff, they stand to make even more money not to mention all the fleecing of the poor for the last 1o years since 911. Any of you look at all the crazy looking clouds in recent years, this is a result of geo-engineering in the atmosphere by your governments without your consent or knowledge. Planes leaving long contrails which don’t disappear but rather spread out and form clouds. All those chemical soups eventually come back down on you and your families. I have 20 plus years in law enforcement and criminal investigations so it is easy for me to see the manipulation and fraud . Their is ample evidence available out there if anyone cares to do some research.

The goal in life is not to find oneself in the majority,
But, to escape the ranks of the insane.
So by the words of a politician, we must surrender our
liberty so we can worship their guidance.

Drudge lives in South Florida: obviously the DrudgeReport is the top-referrer to WUWT today, with the most page views going to this story on 1/1/2011 — a Saturday — and one of the slowest internet / news days of the year.

“Yeah Tobes, sure thing. The LTA Maximum for Melbourne in December is 24.2C
December ’10 average max was 24.8C.
I think I can see a glacier forming at the end of my street.”
Hmm, well Rod Dickson from the BOM says:
“Until now Melbourne has shivered its way through the first month of summer, with an above average rainfall and even snow in parts of the state.
But Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Rod Dickson said the New Year would bring in the the warmer weather.
“Obviously we’re having a fairly cool period, but there are certainly increased chances of above average temperatures from January,” Mr Dickson said.”
As I type this at 11:28 AM, Melbourne temp is a scorching 17C. 🙂

The key point: the low edge of the low bracket of the UN Population projection has always been right so far. It now says: peak at under 8bn in 2030, then slowly declining.

I agree with you Brian on population levelling off. A little calculation I like to give to measure the dimensions of the problem of population: 90 billion people could fit into Lake Superior, each with a square meter to tread water in – heck the 6B could even swim around. I always worry that when I offer this measure that Neo Malthusians might start working on how to get us all into Lake Superior.

Where is global warming when you need it?

Avery harden
January 1, 2011 8:28 pm

Ok, add denial of population increase to your list of things to be denied. Any concern with the billions of people today in China, India, and Brazil rapidly catching up with our consumption level? Imagine a few hundred million more cars before long just in China and India putting new demands on global petroleum. No concern about the hundreds of square miles of old growth trees dissappearing every year. It takes two or three hundred years to grow one of those. What about the hundreds of species of animals that go extinct every year? Oh, Those lying lamestream scientist. The world my kids and grandkids will inherit will be just fine, except for the annoying libs.

Could one of you warmists please explain
to me how warmer temps produce more snow?Oh wait.I forgot it warmed from -30C to -29C.Twits

Avery harden
January 1, 2011 10:38 pm

For just thinking,
Here is the hypothisis how warmth creates more snow. White ice reflects sunlight (heat) back into space, equals colder temps on Earth. White ice melting in the Artic means non white exposed water absorbs heat from sun, means more evaporation, more moisture in the atmosphere for potential snow making.
Regarding warming, the most significant indicator is average temperatures from thousands of points around the globe, for a year, or ten years, or ahundred. Anecdotal looks at small regions, for brief periods is misleading.
