Analysis: Robert Koch Institute’s Heat Death Model Is “A Joke”… Deaths “Assumed” To Be Due To Heat

There is a publication by the RKI [Robert Koch Institute] on “Heat and Excess Mortality in Germany.”

The methodology is also explained in it: calendar weeks with a mean temperature above 20°C are filtered out, and then the excess mortality figures provided by the Federal Statistical Office for these periods are declared to be “heat deaths.”

The “model” is simple and delivers the desired results: this year, up to calendar week 29, we have already seen nearly 10,000 heat deaths. A distinction between “from heat” or “with heat” is not even attempted (just as with the Covid-19 deaths), even though it could be very important for assessing the actual cause of a death. The headline is set and eagerly quoted.

The 3rd figure from the RKI shows deaths per year starting from 2016. They occur in the summer months. What could be more obvious than building an (equally) simple model that directly links annual death figures with average summer temperatures? This “model” also doesn’t care about real physiology and the actual impact of heat on human beings.

When is heat actually life-threatening?

For this, there is the “wet-bulb temperature.” You can determine it yourself: wrap a moist cloth around a thermometer. Evaporation follows, which cools. How much it cools depends on the humidity of the ambient air. This metric measures both, and starting at around 30 °C on a thermometer prepared this way, it becomes critical for humans because thermoregulation (sweating) can no longer function sufficiently.

What are realistic values? On July 30, 2026, at 4:00 PM, 37 °C was measured in Berlin with a dew point of 12 °C. The wet-bulb temperature came out to 21°C. That was about 9°C short of the critical threshold. The heat was NOT life-threatening because the air was too dry, allowing thermoregulation to work effectively. The RKI does not take any of this into account; it solely uses the “mean air temperature.”

Well then, the RKI “model” for annual figures can be recreated in just a few minutes.

The data for the deaths assumed by the RKI can be downloaded here. Only the numbers for Germany are interesting. Now, one just needs the “average summer temperatures” from the DWD [German Weather Service] from here.

A scatter plot is created in no time using the 2016–2025 data:

Indeed, the number of deaths depends 81% on mean temperatures (the R-squared). From the line equation in the diagram, a tool emerges to replicate the RKI figures:

The correlation is sufficient; the mean error is only 21%.

Now one can apply this “model” starting from 1950. According to it, no one dies “from” heat at a mean summer temperature below 17.4 °C. Above that, they do! However, mean temperatures say almost nothing about actual “heat” on individual days.

Up to 2025, the year 2003 takes the cake with almost 8,700 heat deaths—except the RKI hasn’t noticed this yet. According to this logic, a total of around 72,000 people became “heat victims” since 1950.

So much for the “model” using simple linear regression. It simply links mean temperatures with “heat deaths” and aligns very well with the RKI’s model along with its stated uncertainties.

Pure statistical artefact

What both have in common is that they have nothing—absolutely nothing—to do with physiology or real health risks from heat. The “heat deaths” are a pure statistical artifact. It is simply “assumed” that excess mortality during a warm week is caused by the heat. The final image achieves the desired effect: “Look how many fatalities climate change is costing us!”

All of this from a “model” by an institute whose actual job is to provide valid risk analyses for human health. Its “heat death model” is a joke without any physiological background! Is the institute serving purely political interests once again? That would be truly tragic!

Is the Robert Koch Institute related to the Koch Foundation? It seemed libertarianish and not very inclined to extremism of any kind, but their foundation’s funding choices seemed to drift leftwards when Charles Koch died and his brother was left in charge.

No, nothing to do with the Foundation. Koch was a 19th century scientist in Berlin who discovered the cause of Tuberculosis. The Institute is named after him.

Robert Koch was a real researcher, a genuine pioneer within the history of the establishment of the causes of infectious diseases in humans and was awarded a well-deserved Nobel Prize for his work when the Nobel Prize was a genuine acknowledgement of original research.
His name has been appropriated to apply the the Federal Ministry of Health.
It is government owned and operated and historically dealt with public health.
Just another lemming blindly stampeding towards the cliff of error and irrelevance along with so many other “free world” states.

It is just amazing how almost all Australians regularly survive summer temperatures over 30 and even over 40 C. It makes 19.4 C look quite puny.

Indeed, 30 C would seem quite cool lately here in Utah. It topped 40 again yesterday (though it sounds more impressive in Fahrenheit at 104). Haven’t seen anyone dropping tot.

The excess deaths were mainly of elderly men and women with cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease. The mean wet-bulb temperature on days one and three before death was the only measure of humidity tested to correlate significantly with daily deaths. There was a threefold and statistically significant increase during the heatwave in deaths of women aged 70 to 79, but deaths of men in this age group and of men and women over 80 did not increase. There were significantly more hospital emergency admissions from 24 June to 8 July 1976 than for the same period in 1975 or 1974. When this type of report has come up in the past, the method used was to say, “If 10 million people die one day early, that is 10 million days lost. Divide that by the average lifespan (about 30,000 days) and you have 333.3 people killed.” No death certificates issued, not even for the 0.3 of a person. It is statistical trickery. Now, do the same for cold weather!

Next, we’ll calculate how much our “air conditioning” systems are heating the atmosphere. Not just the condensers but including all the coal mined and burned to generate the electricity that runs all that “air conditioning.” It may turn out that “global warming” is caused by “air conditioning,” not CO2. Good for a few headlines.

A distinction between “from heat” or “with heat” is not even attempted (just as with the Covid-19 deaths)

I hate to be pedantic, but here in the UK the ONS did distinguish between “with” and “from” Covid, pre-vaccine it was ~ 90% had Covid as the underlying cause of death.

Of course you can argue that the doctors certifying the death didn’t know what they’re talking about, but then you’re off into full conspiracy theory territory.

I agree with your comment. Just to point out that there are two sections to a death certificate, part 1 states the direct causes of death. Part 2 contains any conditions that predisposed the person to the causes listed in part 1.

Assuming the cert. is filled out accurately and without bias. Here in the US some covid deaths seemed to have been hastened by gunshot wounds or auto accidents, but labelled as covid. But that sounds so conspiracy like, doesn’t it? Or maybe incompetence on an industrial scale?

How do these statistics & calculations plus predictions take into account the number of very aged/aging populations around the world? They will have a growing number of excess deaths just due to that fact.

What I think the author misses is that the average “wet-bulb” temperature does not reflect the actual conditions that people might be living in.

If you’re staying in a tent in a forest then yes, the “wet-bulb” temperature might be a realistic reflection of your experience, however if you’re living in an apartment, that doesn’t have air conditioning, the temperatures you’re subjected to could be perhaps 5c – 10c above what the thermometer says.

+30C occurs on the midwet coast of North America – like Seattle WA and Vancouver BC, I’ve experienced it several times in the past several decades. (At that temperature it is starting to feel humid but nothing like NYC in summer.)

Hasn’t study after study shown that extreme cold has been historically responsible for far more deaths than extreme heat? And if heat is such a threat why is it that the most populous countries on the planet are located in warm zones. These are India, China, the US, Indonesia, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Brazil. All these countries and many others in tropical, sub-tropical and temperate zones have been seeing population increases, while the Earth as a whole has increased from around 2 billion in 1900 to its current 8.3 billion. So if heat is such a threat, how can all this be occurring? Or maybe it’s another case of the eco-alarmists trying to revive the dead horse often known as the Climate Crisis.
