The latest full week in 2026 displayed on that chart (week 29) clearly shows that, at 65,453 ha, 2026 had a much larger cumulative burn area across France than the same week in 2022 (56,515 ha).

According to the French Interior Ministry (link in French, translation below via Google Translate), as of July 24 (end of week 30), the total area burnt in France stood at 116,085 ha, with further burnt area this week.

As major fires rage, particularly in the Gironde and Landes regions, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced that 116,085 hectares have burned in France since the beginning of the year. The Ministry of the Interior—specifically the Directorate-General for Civil Security and Crisis Management and the departmental prefectures—is fully mobilized to address this large-scale situation.

Even using last week’s figures, week 30, cumulative burnt area in France is now off the top of the scale in that OWID chart.

It will be interesting to see the OWID updates over the next few weeks and whether Homewood or WUWT choose to report them.

The French Interior Ministry figure you quote is unreliable for the purpose of historical comparison. It is a real time figure compiled for emergency management purposes, and does not have proper quality control for historical reporting purposes. Elsewhere in my comments you will see that most recent wildfire trends in France show a lower year to year baseline with occasional high outliers. You’ll also note that there is no reliable wildfire data for France prior to about 1980.

No doubt the French Interior Ministry figures will differ from the satellite-derived figures; however, the point remains that the values in the OWID chart in the article do not refer to, “… the latest fires in France…”, as the article claims.

They refer to conditions at the end of week 29 of 2026. We are currently half way through week 31; so the data on that chart are a week-and-a-half out of date. In that 1 1/2 week period, wildfires in France have rarely been out of the headlines; so it is very likely that the updates will move much more towards the French Interior Ministry figures.

As I said above, it will be interesting to see if Paul Homewood and WUWT provide updates to this article as the latest data come in.

Authorities have confirmed that nine out of ten wildfires in France in 2026 were caused by human activity, including both accidental ignitions and deliberate arson. Law enforcement has arrested 111 individuals in connection with these fires, with many admitting responsibility for starting them.

Just after a “heat dome” weather event, is a great time for arsonists. !

I am pleased you have picked up the fact that Climate Change is responsible for the fires across France. This climate fellow is a rather pesky and careless character who gets around a lot.

Here is the latest evidence:
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has said that “9 out of 10 fires are human-caused” as France faces an unprecedented wildfire season.
In a social media post published this week, the French Prime Minister noted that most of the incidents arise from “carelessness” and confirmed that 162 arson arrests have taken place nationwide this month.

I disagree with 99% of your comments but I think you have them here. I’m quite prepared to accept that 2026 is a record year if the figures show that. But I don’t need to draw any conclusions about the climate based on that record if it is a record. But some other people seem to think that it is necessary for 2026 not to be a record year in order to prove or disprove conclusions about the climate. That, it would appear, is why they don’t like your comment.

You don’t need to draw conclusions about the climate from the area burned in France, but you might consider it prudent to draw conclusions about the motivations of people who post out-of-date charts, say they show something they don’t show, then drop the whole subject like a hot stone the instant the files are updated in a way that isn’t to their liking.

The Landes fire in 1949 was in about the same region as the Gironde fire. Just south west of Bordeaux… ie on the Atlantic coast

Update:

As of today’s date, Mon Aug 03, 2026, this is the latest update from OWID to the France ‘cumulative burned area’ chart. This runs to the end of week 30, the week ending Sunday, July 26th and there has been a lot more area burned since then, still to be updated (Interior Minister estimating 119,000 ha as of early August).

As you can clearly see, 2026 sets a new record for area burned in France up to week 30. It is less than 200 ha. short of setting a new annual record, which will be eclipsed next week when the week 31 data are finalised.

I have checked today and so far no update or correction on Homewood’s blog. “Quelle surprise!” as they say in France.

Back in 1988 Hansen sounded his global warming klaxon, and France’s worst fire in 1989 was reported in what one could call a normal rational way. That is to say, without all the AGW/climate crisis alarmism we have become more than used to since that time.

2018 a tweet featuring a photo of “a Swedish girl” sitting on a sidewalk was released by the tech company, We Don’t Have Time, founded by its CEO Ingmar Rentzhog:

“One 15 year old girl in front of the Swedish parliament is striking from School until Election Day in 3 weeks[.] Imagine how lonely she must feel in this picture. People where [sic] just walking by. Continuing with the business as usual thing. But the truth is. We can’t and she knows it!”

Rentzhog’s tweet, via the We Don’t Have Time twitter account, would be the very first exposure of Thunberg’s now famous school strike.

Tagged in Rentzhog’s “lonely girl” tweet were five twitter accounts: Greta Thunberg, Zero Hour (youth movement), Jamie Margolin (the teenage founder of Zero Hour), Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project, and the People’s Climate Strike twitter account (in the identical font and aesthetics as 350.org).

According to the BDIFF data series (the official wildfire, reporting data set for France), French wildfire Trends:

  • 1970s–early 1990s: High and frequent large seasons (Mediterranean averages ~30,000–35,000 ha/year in the 1980s).
  • Mid-1990s–2010s: Strong decline (better prevention, early attack, land management) — often <15,000–20,000 ha nationally in ordinary years.
  • Recent: Lower baseline with extreme outliers (2003, 2022). Mediterranean share remains dominant in most years (~¾ of area on average), though 2022 was notable for large non-Mediterranean fires (especially Gironde).

NOTE: For historical comparison purposes, reported values must all use the same criteria and reporting metrics. The widely disseminated, large figures quoted by TFN are non-standard values from the French Interior Ministry / Sécurité civile operational tallies. These are real-time or near-real-time aggregates used for crisis management. They typically:

  • Cover a broader range of burned vegetation (not limited to the stricter “feu de forêt” definition),
  • Include smaller fires more readily,
  • Reflect the total area “parcourue” as reported by local services during active operations.

In contrast, the BDIFF series (the source underlying the longer historical tables of forest/wooded-area burned) uses a more precise, post-event, validated definition: fires that start in forest or spread into forest or other wooded land, with detailed surface categories and quality controls. Public BDIFF aggregates are released only for completed years; 2026 data are still “en cours de saisie” and therefore not disseminated.

More importantly, Reliable continuous national data on wildfire (forest fire) area burned in France does not exist until systematic recording began in the Mediterranean zone around 1973 (Prométhée/BDIFF) and improved nationally from the late 1970s/1980s. Pre-1970 figures are incomplete and mostly limited to major events. If wildfires historically in France followed a similar pattern to other parts of the world, it is very likely that much worse wildfire years occurred in the early to mid-20th century than today, especially during World War I and World War II.

Also, even the highest cumulative total quoted bythe French Interior Ministry represents only about 0.2% of the land area of France, so one must not get the false impression that “France is burning!”

Much of the woods of Les Landes, south west France, are a monoculture, planted, with densely packed conifers, full of resin. Will burn unstoppably when lit.
We know that the fires near Fontainebleau 40 miles south of Paris were started by arsonists. One wonders about the other outbreaks, how many really had ‘natural’ causes.

Between 19 and 25 August 1949, the Landes de Gascogne forest was devastated by a wildfire that swept across 52,000 hectares and claimed the lives of 82 people, including foresters, volunteer firefighters, local civilians, and soldiers from the 33rd Artillery Regiment of Châtellerault. On 20 August, at precisely 3:15 p.m., the wind shifted abruptly, reigniting almost all of the remaining fire fronts. Within twenty minutes, the blaze consumed an additional 6,000 hectares.

Over the course of 1949, the Landes forest, which spans the departments of Gironde and Landes, suffered a total of 131,000 hectares burned.

Beyond the Landes forest itself, the INA (French National Audiovisual Institute) reports that a separate wildfire was simultaneously ravaging nearly 50,000 hectares in the northeastern part of the Landes department, involving more than 2,000 soldiers and operating independently from the Gironde fire fronts. On 20 August alone, the regional prefect reported that 104,000 hectares had already been destroyed, with losses amounting to 3.5 billion francs over a period of forty days.
In 1949, France experienced nearly 500 wildfires that destroyed more than 100,000 hectares of forest nationwide, counting only land officially classified as forest and excluding heathlands and scrubland.

Across all vegetation types, the national total was most likely between 180,000 and 250,000 hectares burned. However, this range is a reconstructed estimate, as no nationwide wildfire database existed at the time.

This disaster followed three consecutive summers of extreme heat, during which firebreaks had become overgrown and inaccessible.
In Europe, and particularly in France, both the number of wildfires and the total area burned have declined since the late twentieth century, thanks to increasingly effective fire prevention and suppression techniques.

The French Forest Fire Database (Base de Données sur les Incendies de Forêt en France, BDIFF) is regularly cited in official statements and media reports as the reference source for historical comparisons. However, it has two major limitations that are rarely made explicit.
First, the BDIFF —France’s official nationwide wildfire database— is officially described as a system designed to centralize forest fire data from 2006 onward. Earlier records are only partially available, beginning in 1973, and cover only certain departments in the Mediterranean region, excluding both Gironde and Landes. For these two departments, official institutional coverage does not extend any further back than 2006.

The EFFIS (European Forest Fire Information System) is also frequently cited in official historical comparisons. However, it provides systematic coverage for France only from 2006 onward.
When officials refer to “the most devastating wildfire of the past fifty years,” they are effectively referring to the 1973–2006 period, corresponding to the BDIFF’s partial Mediterranean coverage. For Gironde and Landes, however, the actual institutional record extends back only to 2006—that is, roughly twenty years of data. In other words, the wildfires of 2026 are being compared against a reference period that excludes the catastrophic events of 1949.

Strictly speaking, it is not incorrect to describe 2026 as a “historic record.” But such a statement says nothing about what occurred before the implementation of systematic—or even partial—records of burned areas. After all, 1949 is not ancient history. We are not talking about fires that took place in the Middle Ages.

As for the causes of these catastrophic wildfires, they are multiple, but in almost every case the human factor is predominant.

They include:

— The decline of agriculture since the 1970s, together with the natural expansion of forests, which has made the landscapes of southeastern France increasingly conducive to large wildfires;

— Growing urban development along the edges of forested areas, multiplying opportunities for fire ignition;

— Deliberate and accidental human-caused fires, whether started by arsonists, by someone carelessly tossing a cigarette butt out of a car window, or by sparks generated during brush-clearing operations carried out in the middle of a drought. (So much for “ecological” or “selective” mowing, by the way. It is of little comfort to the insects and other small wildlife whose habitat in the tall grass was supposedly being preserved when everything ends up going up in smoke.)

— The wildfire suppression paradox: when small and medium-sized fires are extinguished immediately, the biomass that would otherwise have been consumed accumulates over time. This effect is even more pronounced in extensive pine plantations, whose highly flammable nature further amplifies the problem. The rare fires that overwhelm the firefighting capacity designed to deal with routine outbreaks are therefore fueled by decades of accumulated vegetation. Once they escape initial suppression, they become naturally enormous and cause catastrophic destruction.

Following the disaster of 1949, large-scale reforestation programs and systematic fire suppression policies were implemented. Arguably, they worked almost too well—especially when combined with agricultural abandonment and the now widespread notion that forests should simply be left to develop with minimal human intervention.

For seven decades, combustible biomass accumulated. When meteorological conditions—driven by atmospheric blocking patterns for which no statistically significant increase has been demonstrated—make wildfire suppression impossible, only a minor ignition source is needed for the situation to descend into what is, quite literally, an inferno. “Catastrophic anthropogenic climate change” makes for a convenient explanation. Human actions are indeed at the heart of these disasters, but the relevant actions are politically uncomfortable to acknowledge. It is far easier to blame ordinary people for flying or eating meat than to implement sustained forest management and fuel reduction policies.

Such clouds are formed over erupting volcanos. Same mechanism. Now, you have to go back some time but the Auverne highlands are an old volcanic landscape. I think we can be certain such clouds have happened before in France before the French.

We talk here about wildfires, where these conditions were not usual in France as it was said.

Seen by whom? They are seen above even quite small forest or grass fires when conditions are right. A fire of several hundred hectares south of Drayton Valley Alberta two years ago was a superb example of pyrocumulonimbus cloud formation against a clear blue sky. I was with an atmospheric physicist at the time and we took a few hundred photos of it developing, then went down wind to photograph the various types of falling ash. The fire was small and quickly extinguished. This type of prairie fire was deliberately set for millennia under ideal conditions to induce rainfall by buffalo-following bands.

It is not an increase in fires, it is an increase of coverage by “news” of fires. Spains woes are tied directly to it’s government failure to address issues BEFORE fires started, pissing away what money they had on financing illegal aliens invading the country instead of using said money on managing fire risks before and fighting fires after they start. Same story as California.

I don’t know if anybody is claiming that there has been an increase in the number of wildfires. As far as I can see, the discussion is all about the areas which are burned by the wildfirrs. Nor is it of any great significance how the fires started. The issue is how much land is burned once the fires started.

Far from being a purely destructive force, fire is an ecological engine. Across hundreds of millions of years, many terrestrial plant species haven’t merely adapted to survive fire—they have co-evolved to depend on fire for nutrient recycling, canopy opening, seed germination, and habitat dominance.
Without periodic fire, many vibrant forests, grasslands, and shrublands stagnate, choke under their own debris, and eventually succumb to disease or collapse.

Looks like, the arguments are focused on the extent of the areas affected by fires, which is fine. However, most of these fires are either deliberately or accidentally caused by human activity.
Apparently, the first Spanish fire was accidentally started by a guy with an angle grinder. As of today, 28th July, 162 arrests have been made in France.
These countries have always had ”warm climates.” That has not changed. That type of climate may well provide the conditions for fires, but, don’t blame the climate for being what it is. Especially when there are a few nutters, a bit handy with the fuel can and a box of matches. Here in Ireland, we have had fires, and temperatures just occasionally nudged over 25C at times. So, just how ”cool” do the alarmists think it needs to be?
Perhaps, other measures, like proper maintenance/management in advance of ”fire season” should be compulsory instead of being forbidden. Some farmers have given up on live stock, as it has been made uneconomic for them to make a living from it. The subsequent absence of grazing animals, has meant large areas of long dry grasses have provided acres of tinder, just waiting for fires to kick off.
Extent of the fires is one thing, but if the cause of the fires is arson, don’t blame the conditions, and certainly don’t blame the climate.

Maybe I’m overlooking something, but doesn’t France generate most of its electricity by nuclear power and hasn’t that been the case for a number of decades now? So shouldn’t it have cleaner air than most of Europe; i.e., fewer carbon particles that are supposedly largely responsible for a warmer climate. Yet despite it all, the country is still being plagued by wildfires. So I can draw two conclusions from this. First unless every country stops burning fossil fuels, there’s no stopping such fires or any associated warming. Second, maybe those pollutants don’t have anything to do with the supposed climate change phenomenon after all.

I think that the climate alarmists would argue that you can’t prevent climate change crossing borders. So the climate change in France is all the fault of those pesky Germans or even the Chinese or, worst of all, the Americans. After all, they worry about melting ice in the Arctic and there are no power stations of any kind in that area.

This summer will be worse than most in the last decades in France, but one year is not a trend.

The data from the JRC (Joint Research Center) of the European Commission show a clear decreasing trend in France, but also in South of Europe (Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Greece) from 1980 to 2024.
