Renewables ‘Can’t Keep Up’ With Data Center Pace. As Usual, the Left Wants Government to Step In.

The political left is worried that the rapid expansion of data centers across the U.S. – a controversial but necessary development considering our competition with China – is increasingly accompanied by the corresponding construction of stand-alone natural gas plants to provide the power demands of the centers.

In Ohio, 10 gas-fired power plants are in the works to fuel new data centers. In West Virginia, a startup business building AI compute campuses plans to utilize hundreds of gas generators by 2028. Newly minted trillionaire Elon Musk has purchased a gas turbine company specifically to power the Tennessee-based data centers fueling Grok.

Across the nation, similar stories are playing out region by region, with dedicated gas plants often backed by tech giants who once swore off fossil fuels before reality set in.

Natural gas plants can be stood up relatively quickly and deliver the massive power required to keep the U.S. ahead of its adversaries in the AI/data center race. While data centers have resulted in controversies in some local communities – an unsurprising NIMBY reaction – other places have welcomed the developments.

As stated here before, artificial intelligence is here, like it or not. The only question is who will make the rules, the U.S. or China?

Soldiers in the anti-fossil fuel brigade are once again coming face-to-face with their biggest enemy: reality. And as usual, rather than seeking to engage fairly in the free market, backers of renewables are demanding that government write regulations requiring their use.

The Associated Press recently reported that “tech giants are demanding power at such speed and scale — some data centers consume more energy than a mid-size city — that the construction of wind and solar simply can’t keep up,” giving natural gas a substantial advantage. Most people call that the free market playing out as it naturally will. The climate change fearmongers call it foul play.

To level the field, the same old playbook is once again being deployed. For instance, in Michigan, Oregon and Minnesota, laws have been enacted in the last 18 months “designed to protect their pre-existing requirements that electric utilities use only emissions-free energy sources by 2040,” AP reported, adding that similar bills are emerging in California, Illinois, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

New York, not surprisingly, leads the way when it comes to the heavy hand of government mandates. There, legislation would force data centers over a certain size “to meet renewable energy benchmarks starting in 2030 and, by 2040, get at least 90% of their energy from renewable energies.”

The arrogance of those demanding that alternatives be given special consideration was once more on display courtesy of a New York state lawmaker who wrote the bill in question. “We are literally talking about the wealthiest companies in the world that are looking to build in New York state,” said state Sen. Kristen Gonzalez (D), adding, “and if they have the resources to put billions of dollars into data center development, then they certainly should have the resources to build out renewable energy sources to power them.”

So there!

Insisting what other people can and should do with their money – and writing legislation forcing them to do it – is a familiar page from the playbook of the left. Such attitudes will only be magnified by the new crop of socialists who are winning Democratic Party primaries across the country.

Of course, to back up the demand that renewables be governmentally propped up to power data centers, the left will trot out friendly new studies to bolster its arguments. So, right on cue, here comes the Environmental Integrity Project with another study condemning the big, bad gas plants.

“Dozens of planned gas plants to ​directly power data centers in the United States could emit as much greenhouse gas annually as ‌Australia or France,” according to a Reuters story on the findings of the study.

“An industry of the future should not be chained to dirty fuels of the past and the air pollution from fossil fuels that cause real harm to communities,” said Jen Duggan, executive director of ​the EIP.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin countered, “I think that a lot of Americans would agree that we should win this race against China to be the AI capital of the world.” Amen.

The climate change movement flourished under the Obama and Biden administrations, costing taxpayers billions of dollars and funneling industries and consumers into a no-choice scenario of less reliable, less effective alternative power options. Thankfully, the Trump administration has unleashed all American energy resources – including inviting alternatives to compete in the free marketplace.

For now, the left acknowledges that the federal government is not friendly turf. So, when it comes to emerging data centers, the subsidies-and-mandates game is playing out at the state level, because without such help, as AP reported, “the construction of wind and solar simply can’t keep up.”

In the free marketplace, things that can’t keep up eventually fall by the wayside. But in the fantasyland of far-left (and socialist) idealism, government regulations keep them afloat or even put them in preferred positions – at least until their deficiencies become too obvious and too dangerous to pretend anymore. (For example, see the massive 2025 power outage in Spain, Portugal and parts of France, where alternatives failed and natural gas came to the rescue to restore power.)

The U.S. will likely win the AI race, but only because it got under way in earnest during the Trump administration. If it had happened under the Biden regime, our government would be mandating artificial benchmarks for renewables while China focused on controlling artificial intelligence for the world.

Intermittent energy sources like wind and solar can never be used to power data centres which require reliable power 24 hours a day. Climate alarmists seem to think that reality doesn’t apply to them.

It’s unclear for climate alarmists are demanding sufficient wind\solar\battery to meet AI demand at all time, or sufficient yearly output to match AI yearly demand. The latter would mean AI companies could absolutely crash the daytime market, and nighttime would be constant blackouts as AI competes with cities for power.

Didn’t say it is not here. Basically data center buildout is the Y2K of today. All this screeching&wailing will come to the same end, vast amount of capital pissed away to zero useful effect. AI is in devices all over the planet, the push for massive data centers predates the aibot hysteria. AMERICA needs plentiful, reliable electricity. That means massive buildout of gas, coal, hydro and nuclear electric generation plants. F*ck AI, it is WAY down real peoples’ list of priorities.

Folks under age 40 will have no first-hand experience with Y2K.
The forecasts of doom regarding Y2K: The Year 2000 problem was the potential for computer errors on the Gregorian calendar related to the formatting and storage of calendar data for dates in and after the year 2000. Planes didn’t fall out of the sky …etc… because of pre-emptive action of computer programmers and information technologists. Warnings began in 1984.
50 years from now the AI controversy will, likewise, be an historical footnote — if we are still here. 🙂

I know, my brother in law was one of those who “fixed” Y2K. At the time he said it was all a big scam that vast amounts of money was vanishing into, all the while people like him were “fixing it”. Same for this scam. AI already is. It is in devices, mainframes and data centers all over the world already. This screeching and caterwauling rush to build vast new AI data centers is smoke&mirrors, and it won’t be 50 years, people are already seeing through it. Remember the huge emergency rush to build vast data centers to “mine crypto/bitcoin”? Haven’t heard much of that after AI popped up. Imagine that.

Uh, no I don’t remember that. Bitcoin mining was mostly done on regular home servers running parallel video processor cards. Some might have been done on server farms, but those cost more than the few bitcoins they might have mined. Bitcoin wasn’t worth $60K each back then.

Germany has gone apeshit regarding wind, solar, batteries, etc., closed its perfectly good nuclear plants, which has driven up electricity prices for households to 45 c/kWh, half of which are taxes, fees and surcharges to finance additional idiocies.

In 2026, Germany is paying 5 times the price of natural gas than it was paying in 2016.

No industrial economy can be competitive in world markets with such high energy prices

Combined cycle gas turbine plants are 60% efficient produce at 6c/kWh, 24/7/365, to operate data centers which operate 24/7/365.

Even a moron liberal arts fart should be able the understand you cannot run a modern economy dependent on the weather.

A great deal of that investment will be for data centres

Context matters.
If the AI/Data Centers are the “they” then they should be directly addressing the problem.
If the “they” is a government function, then “they” should not be piling on more regulations on top of more regulations.

FYI, The government absolutely should not, not ever, be in charge of construction of electricity generation plants.

Since the introduction of the phrase “data center” into the common vernacular, the phrase “Moore’s Law” has evaporated from the scene. I guess that sub micron transistor spacing might, indeed be a limit to integrated circuit designs. That doesn’t rule out significant advancements in the applications for quantum computing, however. It seems logical that the energy requirements of data centers are not necessarily bound to be as high as they are now for generations to come.

The original 1965 version of “Moore’s Law” was more about process improvements leading to higher yields (i.e. lower defect rate) than of process shrinks. The high defect rate in the early years limited the number of gates that could be put on a single chip – larger chips would result in higher percentage of bad chips. In a defect free world, more gates per chip would reduce cost per gate.

The later version came in the 70’s when process changes were focused on reducing feature size. The improvements in single core performance between now and 2004 are dramatically less than the improvements between 1982 and 2004.

Data Centers require continuous and uninterruptable electricity that wind turbines and solar panels CANNOT provide.
 
Global electricity demand is expected to grow by over 40% over the next decade driven by industry, data centers, electric vehicles, and air conditioning.
 
Global Elites that cling to “green” policies, CANNOT explain how the more than 341,000 wind turbines currently on the planet in 2026 CANNOT support world economies as wind turbines and solar panels are UNABLE to make:

Just wondering if anyone else has bothered to ask any AI bot currently “existing” in and/or utilizing any existing data center: “What is the best way to power a new data center using today’s technology?”

Seems like a simple question. Here’s the word salad response I received from Google’s AI bot, which I simply don’t trust because it is so “generic”:

“The best way to power a new data center today relies on behind-the-meter (BTM) microgrids, combining solar farms with battery storage (BESS), and pairing them with firm baseload power like natural gas, fuel cells, or nuclear options to bypass crowded public utility lines.”

In particular, although I asked for the best way, the AI response specifically stated “relies upon” and then listed a variety of options. And this is humanity’s future??? Good grief!

You should ask the data center OWNERS what is the best way to power those centers, and because they almost always select 60% efficient combined cycle gas turbines, that is your answer right there.

Did you, perchance, mean that I should ask Grok, which—due to the manner in which you prefaced that statement—insinuates he/she/it may be “right wing”?

BTW, I was led to believe that data center OWNERS selected their build sites in large part based on the current and future projected cost of grid electricity in those areas, not so much based their own plans to build and operate power plants, whether they be CCGT, nuclear or fossil fuel powered. But maybe I’m just wrong.

The federal government under Trump is spending money on renewables. American taxpayers are paying $2.5 billion to corporations to abandon their wind farm projects. Trump has stopped projects that are near completion.

We are allowing China to become the leaders in renewable energy products and installation, another industry that has growing demand around the world. They construct about ¾ of global renewable energy products. China dominates the growing global EV market, while the US market is confined to North America.

Why should we compete with China as the top dog in every industry? We are bound to fail! China has a great advantage over America: stability of policy over time. They can plan 30 years into the future and institute policies to get there, while our policies can change every 4 years. Another reason China is outstripping us in so many areas is government investment in new industries. When the primary investors in new technologies are in the private sector, do you think they are more concerned with what is best for the country in the long term, or making money?

Do you think the supply of fossil fuels in America is limitless? Do we not care about the amount available to future generations, or increasing costs of extraction as the reserves are harder to access? The US EIA estimated in 2021 that we have enough dry natural gas technically recoverable reserves to last about 86 years based on production levels from that year. That’s a very uncertain estimate, but the point is that it’s within the lifetime of many born today.

The cost of renewable energy has declined. It is already cheaper than coal. New storage technologies are being developed. Why should we not diversify our energy sources?

Simply glossing over questions like these and pretending they are simply lefty nonsense is as bad as suggesting we eliminate fossil fuel burning completely.

Finally, why is it so wrong to demand that corporations act responsibly?

Is this a ‘left’ or ‘right’ issue? because whatever gov’t gains power, the policy mess remains the same. Something else manipulating our gov’ts is driving this planet and its people to ruin.
Soon data centres won’t have a power problem. They will run their own on site nuclear power plants the size of a large dustbin. The net zero failure will usher in the use of more nuclear power from more nuclear sites. The net zero was doomed to fail and maybe that was the aim.
