Danish scientist Henrik Svensmark, known for his controversial research on cosmic rays and cloud formation, has been dismissed by his university in Copenhagen after years of internal conflict. In an interview with the Danish newspaper Berlingske, he described the decision as “a death blow” to his research.

Something unusual and encouraging has happened in Danish climate journalism. Berlingske, one of Denmark’s leading national daily newspapers, has published an excellent and genuinely inquisitive article about the dismissal of physicist Henrik Svensmark from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), where he has been working since the late nineties. The headline leaves no room for doubt: “Controversial Danish climate and space researcher has received the pink slip from DTU: It is ‘a death blow’ to my research”.

Here is how the article starts:

He is one of Denmark’s most internationally recognized researchers – and at the same time one of the most controversial. But now space and climate researcher Henrik Svensmark has, in his own words, been “good old-fashioned fired” by his employer, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) in Lyngby. He does not rule out that “political considerations” – as he puts it – were involved in the years-long process that led to his final dismissal. At the same time, Henrik Svensmark does not hesitate to call it “a death blow” to a branch of research that he has largely developed single-handedly and that climate researchers around the world, including the UN’s climate panel (IPCC), have had to relate to – often reluctantly. This is mainly because Svensmark’s research points to what he sees as an overlooked natural factor behind a large part of the climate changes Earth has undergone. He finally does not rule out that the dismissal may be linked to the fact that he is perceived as a controversial researcher in wide circles: “There is nothing controversial about the research itself. But it is true that many perceive my research as controversial, even though it shouldn’t be.” DTU has no comments on the actual dismissal of Svensmark and refers to it as a personnel matter. However, the director of DTU Space, Henning Skriver, confirms that Svensmark’s overarching research area, atmospheric physics, will now “be significantly down-prioritized.”

Science journalist Lars Henrik Aagaard deserves credit for the whole article. Rather than dismissing Svensmark as merely ‘controversial’, he asks the essential question: is DTU retiring an ageing employee, or is it terminating an internationally recognized but scientifically inconvenient research program?

The facts reported by Berlingske are troubling.

Svensmark, aged 68, and well known for his work on cosmic rays and clouds, was still actively working and preparing a new experiment. Only a few months earlier, he says, his superiors had told him that his research was important and that they wanted him to continue.

According to Svensmark, he had also been selected for a professorship in 2016 following positive international evaluations. A new rector however, blocked his expected promotion to full professor, downgrading him to Senior Researcher (and lowering his salary). That move made it harder for him to secure regular research funding in Denmark.

In 2021, DTU again attempted to dismiss him, but he continued, partly, he says, because of protests from scientists connected with MIT and Princeton (Lindzen and Happer).

Berlingske presented this history to DTU. The university declined to address it. DTU Space director Henning Skriver merely stated that atmospheric physics was being “significantly downgraded” as part of a strategic prioritization.

That is not an explanation. It is management fog.

A public university may change its priorities. But it should explain the scientific reasoning. Why was Svensmark encouraged to continue only months before his dismissal? What happened to the positive international evaluation? Why was the professorship removed? Why is an active experiment being stopped?

The details of an individual employment case may be confidential. The scientific grounds for closing a research program shouldn’t. A hypothesis cannot be dismissed administratively

Solar activity

Svensmark’s research concerns the influence of solar activity and cosmic radiation on aerosol formation, clouds and therefore the climate.

The proposed mechanism is straightforward in principle. Solar activity affects the amount of cosmic radiation reaching Earth. Cosmic radiation ionizes the atmosphere. Ionization may influence the formation and growth of aerosol particles, some of which become cloud condensation nuclei. Clouds, in turn, strongly affect Earth’s radiation balance.

Parts of this chain have been demonstrated experimentally. The unresolved question is how large the resulting climate effect is under real atmospheric conditions and over different timescales.

Svensmark does not claim that carbon dioxide has no effect. He told Berlingske:

“I am not saying that humans are not part of it.”

His point is that natural variability, cloud processes and solar influence remain insufficiently quantified. He describes the dismissal as “a death blow” to the research program he has spent much of his career developing.

Not a marginal researcher

Svensmark cannot reasonably be dismissed as an unsuccessful or marginal scientist. Google Scholar records more than 7,000 citations to his work and an h-index of 30. Compared with the broader DTU research community, this places him approximately among the upper fifth of researchers and probably higher when measured by total citations. That is a considerable scientific impact for a relatively small and highly contested research field, far removed from the large collaborative networks that generate many citations almost automatically.

The predictable but weakest contribution in the article comes from Jens Hesselbjerg Christensen, professor at the Niels Bohr Institute and a prominent figure in the IPCC community.

Hesselbjerg accepts that cosmic radiation may play a role in cloud formation and long-term climate history. He then claims that much of Svensmark’s research appears to have been designed to confirm his hypothesis and that, whenever it was not confirmed, “an arm or a leg” was simply added.

That is an extraordinary accusation and an intellectually shabby one.

Hesselbjerg identifies no paper, no experiment, no faulty measurement, no improper method and no failed prediction. He merely insinuates that Svensmark has constructed his research to reach a predetermined conclusion. If Hesselbjerg believes that, he should name the experiments and explain precisely what was wrong with them. Otherwise, he should withdraw the allegation.

Developing a hypothesis as new evidence appears is not scientific misconduct. It is science. Aerosol formation involves nucleation, particle survival, growth, atmospheric chemistry and eventual cloud formation. Discovering additional mechanisms is not “adding an arm or a leg”. It is the whole purpose of experimental research.

Hesselbjerg’s performance illustrates a wider problem. Researchers close to the institutional consensus can invoke authority while providing remarkably little argument. A dissenting researcher is expected to prove every link in a complex physical chain before his work is even considered legitimate.

That is not a scientific level playing field.

The research should continue

The immediate objective should not merely be to embarrass DTU. It should be to ensure that Svensmark’s research survives. The most important next step is to develop a climate model that explicitly includes the proposed chain connecting solar activity, cosmic radiation, atmospheric ionization, aerosol growth and clouds, alongside greenhouse-gas forcing and the other established climate mechanisms.

Such a model would make it possible to test a question of enormous scientific and political importance: How much of the observed temperature development is caused by human influence, and how much is caused by natural variation?

That question is far from purely academic. Climate policy depends critically on the answer. If natural influences are larger than assumed, the expected effect of reducing carbon emissions is smaller. If they are negligible, the current attribution of climate change to CO2 becomes stronger. Either result would be valuable.

As explained by Henrik Svensmark: “The next decisive step is to build a climate model in which the influence of solar activity, cosmic radiation, aerosol growth and clouds is represented together with greenhouse gases. That would allow us to test how much of modern climate change is human-caused and how much is natural. This can be done within a few years and with a research budget that is modest compared with the political and economic importance of the question.”

The task is therefore concrete: we need to find a new institutional home for Svensmark, preserve the equipment and scientific expertise, assemble an international research team and raise the necessary funding.

Berlingske has performed a valuable public service by bringing this case into the open. DTU has responded with evasion. Jens Hesselbjerg Christensen has responded with an undocumented attack on a colleague’s scientific integrity.

Neither response is acceptable.

Science advances through experiments, observations and testable models, not through administrative priorities, institutional conformity or casual insinuations.

Henrik Svensmark’s research must not end with a DTU management decision. It must now be given the resources to face the only judgement that matters: the judgement of observations.

Once the cosmic origin was proven, the Wilson cloud chamber became the world’s most vital particle detector, allowing physicists to visually track, study, and discover entirely new subatomic particles from outer space.
C.T.R. Wilson created the cloud chamber to replicate and study the natural formation of clouds, optical halos, and meteorological phenomena in a laboratory setting.
So somebody researching cloud formation accidentally detected cosmic rays. Funny old game science.

CO2 as the climate control knob narrative is unwinding following the April 6, 2026, implausible finding. It comes as no surprise that the climate alarmist university/industrial complex takes dramatic measures to defund CO2’s greatest threat, evidence of cooling by cloud formation. Ending the advanced threat that Svensmark posed had to be eliminated. He and his research never had a chance. The consensus driven IPCC contributors are privately applauding (loudly).

Such a proposed Svensmark model is not conceptually possible. The mathematical CFL constraint to numeric PDE solutions means a realistically scaled model of aerosol and cloud formation is about 7 orders of magnitude computationally intractable. That is why clouds have to be parameterized.
I have studied Svensmark’s past research, and found it mostly unpersuasive despite being a strong climate skeptic. The problem is not that cosmic rays don’t induce cloud nucleating aerosol formation—they experimentally do. The problem is that the observed solar influence on incoming cosmic rays is too small to account for any significant variation in cloud formation and hence climate. Observationally, clouds haven’t varied much over several decades of observation—cloud cover ranges between 66 and 67%. Nor is cloud climate impact as simple as Svensmark posits. For example, cirrus warms, and variations in cirrus produce Linszen’s ‘adaptive infrared iris’ that stabilizes climate from AGW. A component of WE’s thermoregulatory hypothesis. Gee, let’s think about that for a second or two . . . it there anything—anything at all—that modern science might yet not have “observed”, given that “solar influence” is just one part of a complex system of nonlinear processes involving stochastic parameters and little understood feedback mechanisms as relate to cloud formation and variations???

Just considering here that modern sciences has not yet “observed” the exact cause (explained “accounting for”) the occurrences of glacial/interglacial cycles in Earth’s history . . . who can say whether or not areal cloud coverage was an important part of those cycles since there is no single direct paleoclimatology proxy for Earth’s areal cloud coverage for the last 10,000 years or longer.

Rud who has worked this space well for years kind of brushes the cloud impact of to easily. 1% is not significant, possibly so, but then cloud type and mix unconsidered and can be positive or negative.

The space needs serious work and Willis E and his persuasive emergent phenomena indicate that there is much to add with real hard data and then along comes the European heatwave and correlations claimed to sunshine hours, that’s clouds again.

 Independently of either man:

  • Global cloud cover reportedly declined about 2.7% from the early 1980s through 2018/19.

Svensmark and Koonin approach climate from different directions, but both elevate clouds to a central role.

As shown below, all the warming this century is accounted for by increased absorbed solar radiation due to changes in cloud cover.

The climate cult, and their little computer games, seem totally oblivious to the massive effect of cloud changes.

Isn’t it strange how the longest and strongest Grand Solar Maximum in six centuries coincided with a significant decline in global cloud cover. There is still a lot we don’t know about the sun and clouds and their effect on climate. And if organisations like the IPCC continue to ignore them then we are likely to go on not knowing.

Agree, Climate Alarmism is overfunded as badly as skepticism is underfunded. Everyone has a different quantifying number, mine is 100 to 1. Cancel culture is alive and well everywhere that liberal/progressives rule. The surprise is that Svensmark survived as long as he did. Politics has replaced science and economics in climate study and electric power decision making. Henrik’s firing is the latest evidence.

The question has been asked, and answered by scientific research. ALL of the warming since 1970 is caused by human activities, mostly by the burning of fossil fuels. IPCC 6th Assessment.

Alteration of scientific conclusions: The final scientific draft of the IPCC’s 1995 Third Assessment Report, submitted by hundreds of participating scientists, had concluded five times that no manmade warming influence is yet discernible:

  • “None of the studies cited above has shown clear evidence that we can attribute the observed changes to the specific cause of increases in greenhouse gases.”
  • “No study to date has positively attributed all or part [of observed climate change] to anthropogenic causes.”
  • “While none of these studies has specifically considered the attribution issue, they often draw some attribution conclusions for which there is little justification.”
  • “Any claims of positive detection of significant climate change are likely to remain controversial until uncertainties in the total natural variability of the climate system are reduced.”

The IPCC did not want any of these things said. It asked a single scientist, Dr. Ben Santer of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, to rewrite the already-concluded final draft to remove all five statements shown above, and to replace them with:

“The body of evidence now points to a discernible human influence on global climate.”

However, the “body of evidence” in the temperature record showed no such thing.”

The IPCC scored a huge own goal there. It is currently impossible (given our incomplete understanding of how Earth’s climate operates) to quantify how much of the beneficial warming since 1970 is due to human activities. Anybody claiming otherwise is either lying or delusional. This would also mean that all natural factors were suddenly terminated in 1970 which is utterly absurd.

That’s only 50 years of earthbound data or less than 2.5 Hale solar cycles (5 Schwabe solar cycles), with less space based data.
The data from Voyagers 1&2 and latterly from New Horizons may provide further information about interactions between the sun and the local galactic environment.
Until that data is available, has been analysed and integrated with the planetary observations obtained by recent space probes and terrestrial observations then there can be no definitive statement made one way or the other.

The scientific finding that atmospheric CO2 was a major factor in the elevation of earths temperature over its equilibrium temperature was established on 1896 by Svante Arrhenius. It’s been upheld and refined by hundreds of scientists since then. No one (except Deniers) believes otherwise.

Arrhenius made a conjecture based on a single layer model that did not remotely resemble the earth atmosphere, and he couldn’t even get his equations dimensionally accurate.

Back in the beginning stages of chemical analysis, “carbonic acid” basically meant CO2.

What Arrhenius did find, scientifically, was that CO2 was a radiatively active gas, as other around that period were also finding…

… but he never did any experiments at all in an open atmosphere…

His “warming” conjecture was all based on a very poor and simplistic “not-real” model…

Most climate models still carry the same “not-real” problems the original Arrhenius model had.

‘Carbonic acid’ was the term used for gaseous CO2 in the 19th century, which Arrhenius describes as a “heat-absorbing gasin the very first page of his paper.

This level of ignorance is exactly why you self-proclaimed ‘skeptics’ are such easy marks for the likes of Svensmark et al.

During Solar Cycle 25, ionization by galactic radiation was significantly lower than during the previous solar cycle. Aphelion occurred on July 6, 2026. Strange solar radiation variations have started to occur at aphelion and perihelion in recent years. No one has noticed it and no one knows why because climate scientists are not allowed to research how the sun’s natural solar variations affect the climate on Earth.

One would think that, since the publication of Thomas Kuhn’s landmark book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions in 1962, it would just not be possible today to have a real example of how a collective of somewhat aged, “established” “scientists” operating within a shared, accepted framework of theories and standards (known as a paradigm) are absolutely resistant to a new paradigm, such as that developed almost single-handedly by Svensmark.

You would be wrong, as the above article documents sadly.

Shades of what Einstein must have gone through with his theories of relativity.

Great admirer of Kuhn and his book. Paradigms shift when the old accumulates observational discrepancies that the new explains. Problem with Svensmark is his ‘new’ doesn’t explain the accumulation of ‘old’ discrepancies. As said above, I don’t find his cosmic ray/cloud theory very persuasive after having looked fairly carefully at it while writing Blowing Smoke.

You make three observational criticism points. But none address the bigger picture of why I do not find Svensmark persuasive.

  1. ISCCP observation that low level cloud varies with the solar cycle. True, but perhaps unimportant—low level cloud alone is NOT climate determinative. I used cirrus and the Lindzen ‘adaptive infrared iris’ as an example above.
  2. Forbush decreases in cloud optical density. These are too short term duration to influence climate. They observationally only show in the ‘real world’ what has also been shown experimentally in the lab on an hours to days basis. Cosmic ray density does influence cloud nucleation density— more means more, less means less.
  3. Historical temperature fluctuations like LIA. It has NOT been well established that such correlate with solar activity—your example being LIA to the Maunder Minimum. The hypothesis exists, but its quantification is very methodologically uncertain. For example, the LIA lasted much longer than the Maunder Minimum. Let alone the uncertainty that IF it did, the Maunder Minimum also influenced IGCR in the same way—historic variation in IGCR is unknown.

I feel that your doubts over Henrik Svensmark’s theories are over-cautious. As Nigel Calder explained many years ago, Henrik Svensmark’s work over the years addressed all the links in the chain. The end result is the whole chain …
Supernova remnants → cosmic rays → solar modulation of cosmic rays → variations in cluster and sulphuric acid production → variation in cloud condensation nuclei → variation in low cloud formation → variation in climate.

For a different assessment, I’ll just resort to this published study “What are the most-cited publications in the social sciences (according to Google Scholar)?” by the London School of Economics and Political Science from May 2016 (ref: https://blogs.lse.ac.uk/impactofsocialsciences/2016/05/12/what-are-the-most-cited-publications-in-the-social-sciences-according-to-google-scholar/ ), which has this statement:

And according to Wikipedia (ref: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Kuhn ), with my bold emphasis added:

Kuhn is credited as a foundational force behind the post-Mertonian sociology of scientific knowledge. So, if anything, Kuhn has helped distinguish between science and religion, contrary to what you assert.

BTW, Newton was particularly involved with the hard sciences whereas Thomas Aquinas was a tried-and-true theologian and philosopher.

So I’ll invite you to please show how, even approximately, Thomas Kuhn has transformed Newton’s main contributions—which even today are the foundational basis of such things as rocket propulsion, inertial navigation, and the descriptions of bodies in motion ranging from the local basketball court to galaxies at the farthest distances probed by the James Webb Space Telescope—from science to religion and/or philosophical musings.

Henrik could be abrasive sometimes but I learned a lot from him over the years when he choose to post here and answer questions or discuss things in his field. How would an ordinary layman like me get a chance to question and learn from such an SME except in a forum like this one?

Not to pour cold water on a hot subject, but how did Svensmark expect to prove the interactions when there has not been even a mild Cosmic Ray incursion for 50 years? His research may save humanity; however, the data sets involving real physical properties will always be lacking given such an intermittent source.

There is one extremely important argument in favour of Henrik Svensmark’s theories. It goes like this:

Forbush Decrease.

The interesting thing about a Forbush Decrease is that it has been shown to be associated with a decrease in cloud cover – a clear pointer to there being an association between GCRs and clouds, as at the core of Henrik Svensmark’s theories. It isn’t proof, of course, but it is one h*ll of a pointer. Another very interesting thing about the Forbush Decrease is that Wikipedia in the not very distant past included the cloud decrease effect in the Forbush Decrease entry, with reference to a paper by Henrik Svensmark. Now the Wikipedia entry for Forbush Decrease doesn’t mention clouds or Henrik Svensmark at all.

Henrik Svensmark is up against a lot more powerful forces than his university.
