DESNZ Spending Budget To Rise To £12.6 Billion A Year

From NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

By Paul Homewood

The already bloated DESNZ has just been handed an astonishing real terms increase of 15.6% in its budget for the next five years in Rachel Reeves’ latest Spending Review:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/spending-review-2025-document/spending-review-2025-html#departmental-settlements

Even excluding Sizewell C, they are being given £45.1 billion to spaff away between now and 2028/29. This equates to £1670 for every home in the country.

The whole of DESNZ could be shut down tomorrow, and nobody would notice. Its routine administrative functions could easily be handled within the Department of Business and Trade, with no increase in staff there.

This gross waste of taxpayer money is rapidly becoming a national scandal.

Yes. It’s dreaming of a Net Zero fantasy. But a large slab of billions is for nuclear decommissioning costs which won’t go away. Also tucked in there is the previous Tory and Labour governments subsidies in Contracts for Difference wind farm payments.

“billions is for nuclear decommissioning costs”

then maybe they shouldn’t be decommissioned?

The UK Department for Net Zero has net zero competence, as this article showed a few months ago:
https://dailysceptic.org/2024/07/28/desnz-has-net-zero-competence/

Labour has appointed six ministers to DESNZ. However, analysis of their background and experience reveals two with PPE (Politics Philosophy and Economic) degrees, one with a degree in history, another with a degree in political studies and one with a degree in history and politics. There’s also one minister gaining a degree in Russian studies before studying law. Not one of them has a background in science, engineering or maths. Almost all of them have worked in the public sector for their whole lives, so between them, there is precious little experience of the commercial world and no experience of the energy sector.

In the UK the PPE degree is sometimes known as the Bluffers degree – enough training to give the appearance of knowing something when you don’t. A favourite for our members of Parliament.

Hey! I have a PPE degree (St. Anne’s College, Oxford 1987). Unfortunately, the large number of idiot politicians who have that degree have rather spoiled its status.

Born and raised in Illinois, I remember the late Senator Dirksen saying:
“A billion here, a billion there, it all adds up!” The Senator other notable quip was:
“That is just so much hogwash.”

DESNZ = Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

Not to be confused with the preceding Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (2016 to 2023) and Department of Energy and Climate Change (2008 to 2016), or the historic Department of Energy (1974 to 1992).

Department for Energy Security and Net-Zero

Always better when acronyms are defined.
