AEP’s Carbon Capture Fantasy

From NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THAT

By Paul Homewood

h/t Doug Brodie

The idiot is back again:

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/business/2024/08/02/carbon-capture-could-be-hero-green-economy

The clown still does not seem to understand that nobody in the world has yet managed to make carbon capture work commercially at scale, though he blames this on Britain making a dog’s dinner of its grand ambitions for carbon capture.

Nor does he seem to realise we have no gas power plants which could be fitted with carbon capture, even if it could be made to work. In other words, we would have to spend tens of billions building new CCGTs.

Nor does he seem to realise that CCS is extremely energy inefficient, therefore requiring much more natural gas than a conventional gas power plant would. Hardly sensible when we wany to cut gas imports.

Nor does he seem to realise that electricity produced via CCS gas power plants is extremely costly.

Will the Telegraph please replace him with a journalist who knows what he is talking about.

Kamala is a goof (a silly fool), posing as a serious politician.

Kamala, speaking without a teleprompter will be her undoing.

Kamala should avoid questioning reporters and debates with Trump at all costs. Otherwise, she will expose herself as not being qualified to be president.

With fewer than 100 days to hide the real Kamala Harris from the voters, the Democrats and the media could pull it off.

Her past policies are memory-holed. Her failed run in 2020 never happened. Kamala was never in charge of the border. Oceania has always been at war with East Asia…

She’s going to win, unfortunately. It’ll come down to three states, all with Democrat AGs. It’s close enough that they can pull the boxes of “absentee” ballots out of the closet if they need them.

Trump, unfortunately, has made quite a few strategic blunders since Harris entered the race. Rather than highlighting her idiocy, he’s attacking her identity. Stupid.

Not really true:

Trump Responds to Kamala Being Too Afraid to Debate on September 4: “That’s Because She’s Really DUMB!”
https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2024/08/trump-responds-kamala-being-too-afraid-debate-september/

Does anyone notice that Kamala Harris doesn’t do interviews? That’s because she’s really DUMB! She can’t speak properly without a teleprompter. She has an extremely low IQ, and our country does not need someone who cannot put two sentences together. We just got finished with that — His name is Sleepy Joe Biden!

Kamala Harris doesn’t have the mental capacity to do a REAL Debate against me, scheduled for September 4th in Pennsylvania. She’s afraid because there is no way she can justify her corrupt and open borders policy, the environmental destruction of our country, the Afghanistan embarrassment, runaway inflation, terrible economy, high interest rates and taxes, and her years-long fight against saying ‘Merry Christmas.’ I’ll see her on September 4th or I won’t see her at all. She is acknowledged as the Worst Vice President in History, which complements the Worst President, Crooked Joe Biden. Together these two low-IQ individuals have destroyed our country, but we will MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

This is the best the Kackles “campaign” can manage:

Kamala Campaign Spreads Such an Egregious Tall Tale About Trump Rally, Even NPR Reporter Calls Them Out

Take the Trump rally in Georgia on Saturday. The Harris campaign team is desperate to make it look like Harris had more people coming out for her rally in the same arena a few days ago. So, what did they do? They falsely tried to claim that there were empty seats for Trump, when it was full for Harris:

Kamala HQ’s account claim was so egregious on this, even an NPR reporter called it out, saying they were using an outdated screen grab:

Kamala did not have thousands of people outside the arena trying to get in, the way it was at the Trump rally.

Kamala had a popular rap star lead off her rally.

Trump said he didn’t need entertainers to get the big crowd he got. Trump said he doesn’t even have a guitar.

After Kamala’s Rap Star finished her performance, many of the people in attendance starting filing out of the building, not staying to hear what Kamala had to say. There are videos. Lots of people were leaving.

Nobody left Trump’s rally, until Trump got through speaking. Everyone in the building wanted to hear what Trump had to say.

“Trump, unfortunately, has made quite a few strategic blunders since Harris entered the race”

I can’t think of any.

Trump is a little more nuanced that a lot of people give him credit for. Trump knows human psychology better than most people, and he knows the weaknesses of his opponents and hits them hard on every one of them.

He questions Kamala’s ethnicity, or rather, her portrayal of her own ethnicity, and casts doubt on her in the process.

He questions her intelligence and casts doubt on that.

As Trump’s granddaughter tells us, Trump likes to try to get inside your head when competing with you. Trump not only likes getting inside his granddaughter’s heard, although she says he is unsuccessful because “she is a Trump, too”, but Trump likes getting in the heads of the political oppositon, including the leftwing media. He says things he knows is going to make lefties heads explode. He wants that.

Trump is not stupid. He knows what he is saying and he does so with a purpose. It wasn’t an accident or an emotional moment that caused Trump to comment on Kamala’s mixed heritage. Trump thinks he can damage her by saying so, and that’s what he did. The Lefties don’t like it, but that’s tough. They should get used to it because more is coming.

His job required stupid or ignorant columns to be produced. His way of dealing with the requirement is to produce the most moronic columns that defy logic. He would loose his job if he spoke the truth.
The propaganda must continue at all cost to keep the followers in line. If people wake up the truth and real logic, governments would loose their power. Keep them all on the plantation till all is taken away so that in the end, they have not place to go. Can’t drive, fly, or walk away.

TREES, the timber industry, people and governments planting more trees and plants is the only “carbon” capture I ever want to see. But as pointed out by many, we are still in a CO2 drought, so lets keep recycling the carbon stored for many years (drill baby drill) in the Earth and feed more beautiful new trees.

Back in the day, I and many others used to attempt to correct AEPs misunderstanding of climate influence all based on CO2 emissions.
I was subsequently banned from commenting on the Daily Telegraph for my sins. It was not considered fair for anyone to be honest and factual when the needs of the moment were propaganda and influence.
I continue to be banned though I am a subscriber. With a bit of luck the new owners when they manage to find them will reflect on the rules of commenting.
The other fixation AEP has is hydrogen will replace fossil fuel for motive power needs. Now anyone who can hold onto that delusion and be paid handsomely by a broadsheet newspaper to write up his thoughts deserves some respect. Well either respect or disbelief by those of us paying to keep the paper above collapse.

Rick, I know what your saying is rational and sensible. Just to round out my somewhat odd willingness to pay money to an organisation as flawed as the DT is, when it comes to Climate Alarmist support, I also pay the BBC licence fee! They are as crazy wrong as it gets on the subject of climate realism. I don’t even watch or listen to the BBC they are so crazy, but we are forced to pay them if we wish to watch Sky sports or any other live broadcast.
Life can be complex.

If only AEP would read the comments he might learn a thing or two (including how unwelcome he is to most readers of the DT). Perhaps he might even have a chat with Suzanne Moore and see if the Guardian would take the pair of them as a buy-one-get-one-free offer??

China has engineered a nuclear plant that won’t meltdown so that looks like it might be the future for generating electricity.

“New testing done at China’s Shidaowan nuclear power plant has confirmed its ability to be naturally cooled down, an industry-first milestone for achieving commercial-scale inherent safety, according to researchers.”

I hate to say it but reinjection of co2 rich off gases into geothermal fields in NZ is a mature and increasingly profitable form of CCS, as is planting forests on marginal lands. Also https://www.gasindustry.co.nz/assets/CoverDocument/Review-of-CCUS-CCS-Potential-in-New-Zealand-March-2023.pdf suggest reinjection into depleting gas fields could be cost effective even at todays CO2-e prices.

One thing what sets me off every time is that nobody from politicians, scholars, economists seem to understand the very basic of creating wealth anymore. The whole green economy, CSS in this case produces nothing. Wealth only comes from hard work and manufacturing goods. We’re stuck with a financial and service economy that produces nothing, now they want a green economy that produces nothing. It only costs us money. Carbon taxes are a crime to humanity.

An economist replies:
The object of an economic system is to use resources to satify people’s wants – as far as they can be satisfied by using resources. You can’t use resources to satisfy the want for happiness. People want goods and they want services. So services do not produce nothing. You want to go out for a meal rather than do your own cooking and clearing up afterwards? Then you go to a restaurant. The chef, the waiter and the person who puts the dishes into the dishwasher have all helped to satisfy your want. For this you are prepared to pay a price. The price you are willing to pay reflects the amount of satisafaction you receive. At one time we had to spend all of our time hunting and gathering food. Then, through new methods of production, societies created a surplus and with the surplus they were able to pay people to do other things such as composing and playing music or writing plays and acting. It was the beginning of civilisation. You could argue that the extent to which an economy employs people in the service sector is an indication of how developed it is. At one time most people worked in the primary sector (mainly in agriculture). Later, most people worked in the secondary sector (manufacturing). Nowadays, in developed economies, most people work in the teriary sector (services). Does WUWT do anything useful? If so, what goods does it produce? None, of course. It provides a service which satisfies a want of many people. And some people are willing to pay a subscription. That subscription reflects the amount of satisfaction they receive.

The Telegraph editorial people should pay the small consulting fees needed to hire an eminent economist for a 10-page report on the economic future of Carbon Capture.
It should not be needed because of the failure of any pilot plant or production plant to date, to succeed.
How many failed plants of any size does it take to finally say “NO” to the concept for the foreseeable future? Are advocates of Carbon Capture using the nebulous “ambition” rather than the pilot plant “reality” to advance their plans? If so, how pathetically simple and wrong that approach is.

August 3, 2024 2:14 am

From the article:

RWE has 5.3GW lined up for possible CCS retrofits. SSE has parallel plans. You could retrofit 3GW of biomass plants, generating “negative” emissions.

Not sure why you think existing gas plants aren’t able to have CCS fitted, aside from it being a waste of time, effort, and money. Is there something innate in the way that they’ve been designed that prevents it?

Boff Doff

I take it that the owners/editors of the DT wish to promote the notion that we are in an existential climate crisis and that things like CSS are a way of getting out of the crisis. In which case, they will employ people who promote that narrative. So, if you are willing to promote that narrative you get a well-paid job at the DT. Simple as that.

Another damnable innumerate. This one is a historian. Son of an anthropologist.

Once again, Francis Menton’s comment is spot-on: “When people get into advocating for this “energy transition,” the stars regularly align to bring forth the most extreme levels of ineptitude. Start with the fact that the “smartest” people are filled with arrogance and hubris, but are not actually very smart. Add that many innumerate Politics and English majors have flooded into a field that cries out for engineering calculations. Add too that groupthink and orthodoxy enforcement prevent anyone from pointing out obvious flaws. And then throw in a strong dose of religious zealotry that obstructs the intrusion of anything resembling critical thinking. All in all, it’s a prescription for catastrophe.”

The 2nd law of thermodynamics rules. CO2 capture reduces the entropy of the Earth. Entropy can never decrease, so energy must be expended to separate the CO2 from atmosphere. It will always take more energy and CO2 generation to do that separation than the CO2 sequestered.

It’s a fools goal. The Greens know nothing about thermodynamics and climate. They just think they do.

“a journalist who knows what he is talking about”

Not just a moron, an oxymoron.

michael hart
August 3, 2024 8:11 am

Sometimes, I can be quite forgiving. Of course the journalist doesn’t understand much in the way of science & technology. He is employed by a large lame-stream media company. His job is just to promulgate the opinions handed down from above.

CCS does have one small merit, however. It is one of the cheapest options to allow industry to continue as normal while simultaneously pretending to work on a remedy for the imagined problem. CCS is a technological and economic flop, of course. But realpolitik often comes up with ‘solutions’ that cannot work in the real world while keep the lid on the excesses of the crazies by promising cake tomorrow.

Rich Davis
Reply to  michael hart
August 3, 2024 11:07 am

On the contrary, the cheapest solution would be to wake up and stop imagining that CO2 has any prospect of warming the climate to a harmful extent.

As an alternative ‘solution’, pretend we’re doing something and then stop cooking the data to make it look like it’s getting dangerously hotter while continuing to burn fossil fuels.

For example maybe claim that sprinkling a bit of fairy dust in the sky is offsetting the effects of CO2. If necessary also pour a few billions down the fusion toilet.

August 3, 2024 9:30 am

Hiring journalists who know what they are talking about would be a whole new approach to informing the people. Where would you find such rare and unusual journalists? Next we’ll be wanting to staff universities and colleges with people who understand and follow the scientific process, and hire politicians who work for the collective benefit of the voters. If we were to embark on this radical new direction it would only be a matter of time before we start to revere merit over image and truth over belief.
