Trump Return Could See Climate Progress ‘Unraveled,’ Sally Jewell Says
The former Interior secretary said she’s “terrified” about what a second Trump administration could mean for climate and environmental policy.
By Zahra Hirji
12 July 2024 at 5:15 am AESTSally Jewell, who served as US Interior secretary from 2013 to 2017, said the climate stakes of the election in November “could not be higher” and that she’s “really afraid for the future of our planet” should former President Donald Trump return to the White House.
“To go backwards is not acceptable,” Jewell told attendees at the Bloomberg Green Festival in Seattle on Thursday. “I can’t say enough about the importance of continuing the progress that has been made over the last three years” on climate change, she added, especially the passage of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act.
…
One of the biggest hurdles to getting to net zero is that consumers still aren’t paying for putting carbon in the atmosphere, Jewell said. Economic incentives are needed: “Until we start shining a spotlight on the true impact, I don’t think people are going to begin to change their behaviors.”
…
“We are all part of an ecosystem that needs to work together,” she said. “We need to pull all those levers now, because it’s a five-alarm fire.”

Sally should do some homework. If she doesn’t she should avoid meddling in something she knows nothing about. Ie Climate change. Briefly carbon dioxide is a good gas and essential to life. Being saturated in the atmosphere at present, any more generated will have negligible effect on the climate.
That’s not the point. Point is, nothing Trump does or does not do can have any effect on climate, or any significant effect on global emissions. The US did about 4.8 billion metric tons of CO2 from energy consumption in 2023. There has been an overall reduction of about 17.2% in US emissions since 2005.
Meanwhile world totals are now 37-36 billion tons (2023) and rising at over 1% per year. India is doing about 3 billion and rising at about 8% a year. China is rising also. Neither has any intention of stopping growing them.
Biden could get elected and reduce US emissions by half, and it would make no difference. Trump could get in and leave them on their current slow decline track, and it will make no difference.
Its time for these people to wake up an understand something very amazing to them: the US economy is just too small a part of the world economy for its unilateral reductions in emissions to have any effect
While they are at it, they might also note that no-one is looking to the US for an example of how to do this stuff. So don’t give us the ‘set an example’ nonsense.
The real=time Global Temperature on the right hand part of the WUWT pages have the temperature at 58.18F / 24.54C.
That is too cold for humans to live outdoors with only light clothes.
That is why almost everybody outside of the Tropics lives and works in heated buildings and uses heated transportation for most of the year.
Woahh, there.
58.18F is 14.54C – typo methinks.
It also emphasizes why “global temperature” is utter nonsense.
I worry about Biden’s stupid and bellicose policies having the potential to ignite WWIII and use of nukes (not the good kind).
And all this assumes CO2 has any impact at all on surface temperatures…..when it may be just the opposite that temperatures drive CO2 levels.
Hmmmm. Then there’s this pesky little issue with IR absorption spectra and saturation. Double Hmmmmm.
Hermann Hardee, physicist at Helmut-Schmidt University, Hamburg, Germany, wrote in 2019 a paper in Earth Sciences titled “What Humans Contribute to Atmospheric CO2: Comparison of Carbon Cycle Models with Observations” concluding just that.
That is what the data show. Temp rise CO2 rise 800 years later
“…nothing Trump does or does not do can have any effect on climate…”
The soonest humanity loses the conceit and deceit that it can and will change climate the better. Like all the stuff nature plays with we must play our part but we are by no means the stars of the show nor ever will be. We need to get back to being familiar with what we do well and efficiently and stop the make believe fairy stories of alarmists from having any traction at all.
Solar and wind are visibly harming our environment and our fellow natural travelers. They do not produce a cleaner environment at all and do very little by way of efficient electricity generation. We have had nuclear for a long time and it is about time we started to use it as was once the intention of its development.
And as for the destructive nature of nuclear didn’t the grass start regrowing in Hiroshima a few weeks after the bombing? Nuclear is the cleanest clean next to natural gas. We should use them both and make our planet a better place for many more of its citizens.
Plus China has a net zero target of 2060 and India a net zero target of 2070 not the 2050 of the West.
More importantly no country will ever reach net zero period.
More to the point, there hasn’t been any “climate progress” apart from curbing actual pollutants. None of the CO2 mitigation strategies have done anything at all beneficial to “the climate”.
Trump unraveling the super-expensive, dysfunctional BS wind, solar and battery scam that enriches well-connected Democrat moneyed elites, while screwing all others, would be a blessing for the world, because the flora is on a starvation diet with CO2 at 421 ppm at end 2023, whereas it should be closer to 1200 ppm to get flora well fed, as proven in greenhouses all over the world
There’s been zero progress, anywhere. According to the climate change industrial complex, the climate is still changing.
Maybe they need to read the room. Spending trillions (globally) with no results? Hmm…
As always, the best way to deal with any climate change is to roll with it. Adapt. Civilization has always adapted. Stop trying to control a word-wide system we in no way understand. Stop trying to control people’s lives. Stop taking our treasure to spend on your pet causes.
Since the word “climate” has been redefined by the UN/WMO to mean 30 years of weather, it like the weather is always changing.
Clever. I get it, and like it.
The “progress” has actually been backwards, i.e. net negative not zero, but it was progressives (phonies) who named the Inflation Reduction Act too, similarly liberals aka totalitarian wannabes.
I love it when these nitwits get frustrated when they realize that normal people are on to their scams and hoaxes.
Yes. The claim is made that “consumers still aren’t paying for putting carbon in the atmosphere …”. But this carefully sidesteps the question of who the consumer should be paying for their carbon sins.
This nebulous thing called the climate doesn’t have a bank account sort code. There will be some humans somewhere collecting monies the consumer is forced to give up. This will be in addition to the general wealth destruction caused by net zero policies.
As a MechE, one would expect Sally to know better, but it looks like she has more in common with John Holdren than Steve Koonin re. climate alarmism.
According to Silly Sally…
Well guess what Silly Sally, we ARE all part of an ecosystem that DOES Work Together, a true symbiotic relationship.
All photosynthetic plant life in the ecosystem requires a steady supply of atmospheric CO2 and H2O to grow and thrive.
All animal life depends on atmospheric Oxygen to flourish.
All animal life produces CO2 during respiration and CH4 during digestion.
Plants produce and respire Oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis.
And nature reduces CH4 into CO2 and H2O through fire and lightning.
The ecosystem is dependent on the symbiotic relationship plants and animals share
increased atmospheric CO2 and CH4 levels enhances plant growth and creates a more robust ecosystem.
I am busy working on reducing those methane emitters. Does that count?
No more beans, for you then.
Sally also says “Until we start shining a spotlight on the true impact, I don’t think people are going to begin to change their behaviors”
Sally doesn’t understand a few things, and doesn’t have a clue about others.
1) The TRUE impact is negligible.
2) Even if there were an impact, per Sally’s personal belief, the USA portion of the impact could be mitigated by 0.2 degrees (at a cost of living standard, lives, & future innovation).
3) I am not going to change my behavior based on any spotlighting, because I do not have the resources to lessen my carbon dioxide output. It is at the bottom. I am like 60% of the USA; either we do not have the capacity to reduce, or we are so insignificant that we don’t matter (with respect to CO2 expression). Sally does not know any of us; those of us that she has met are quickly forgotten; she does not know how the majority of the country lives.
4) FU Sally.
I’m old enough to remember when John Holdren was advocating “clean coal” as the replacement or nuclear generation. One of the things he said was that the most deaths from “clean coal’ would come from grade crossing accidents involving coal trains. This was in a talk he gave late spring 1976 – I had a hard tie taking him seriously after that. This was before I found out about his thoughts on population control.
Yeah, the notion of coal mining never occurred to him. He got his degree from Stanford, so perhaps that explains everything.
Here in the UK, Just Stop Oil activists want doctors to lecture their patients on climate change. They must be really worried…but perhaps not about the weather.
Looked her up. Started with a college major in dental hygiene at U.Washington (?!), switched to mechanical engineering because then boyfriend had that major. Maybe dental hygiene was too hard? Couple of years working on Alaska pipeline. Then became an ardent environmentalist, eventually becoming long time COO and then long time CEO of Seattle based outdoor equipment retailer REI.
Zero qualifications for DoI except REI retail. Zero qualifications in ‘climate science’. Her opinion matters not. Her loud despair at Trump’s now very likely 5Nov win will grow worse as ‘Drill, baby drill’ returns to restore US energy independence lost under Biden and lower energy costs increased under Biden.
Trump left the US economy in shambles when he left.
Very high 6 percent unemployment and only a 1 percent growth rate with a raging pandemic.
That’s why he wasn’t reelected.
Biden makes too many careless mistakes.
Neither candidate candidate is good for the country at this point.
Basically all Covid. Economy was rocketing before Fauci unleased that.
The “Trump derangement” is all YOURS. !
Biden is one big mistake.
Don’t tell up you are still going to vote for a candidate with senile dementia !
Who is a fumbling, bumbling puppet/marionette, who cannot even manage a teleprompter!!
Oh man, give me a break!
Russia, China, India, etc., are laughing at us
There’s hope for Trump and his administration. There’s no hope for Biden and his leftist death cult.
“Trump left the US economy in shambles when he left.”
There were 500,000 jobs created in Trump’s last quarter in office.
“Very high 6 percent unemployment and only a 1 percent growth rate with a raging pandemic.”
You were schooled on this very recently, but you repeat the distortions.
“That’s why he wasn’t reelected.”
You know nothing.
A complete distortion of the facts. You should apply for a job as a CNN propagandist. You have all the “talents” required.
Apply at Good Morning Joe. You will feel right at home.
You were schooled on this very recently
Some people are never willing to accept facts, no matter how many times they are presented with them.
You notice that he also never responds when corrected?
Please. Leave. It will make you feel better.
Put down your crack pipe indeed.
Shambles?
That must be the reason, why he is so popular.
Democrats hate it when PRIVATE ENTERPRISE makes America great again.
Democrats want the government to do it, so they can be in the command/control positions.
Only problem is that the government usually messes it up.
Yep, there’s no problem that government, by tackling it, can’t make worse!
Usually? You are too kind.
So, scvblwxq, you are suggesting that Trump caused the Covid pandemic, it was his fault???
Hopefully one of Trump 47s first actions will be to pull us out of Paris … Immediately!
Then, if/when both houses have a Republic Majority, resubmit the Paris “Climate Treaty” for them to also say no on.
That and then to eliminate any EV, PHEV Mandate and Subsidy as well as Wind and Solar subsidies
That would be a dream, because, it would cause quite a stink, back here in old Blighty, who are hell-bent on ruining the country.
And scarcely a numerate member of the [UK] Cabinet.
As for science grounding … don’t hold your breath.
Auto
They were schooled by Abbott
Paris doesn’t really exist any more
Just another dose of alarmist rhetoric since consumers have few intentions of accepting environmental levies that have done little to stop emissions while guaranteeing higher living costs. And when the really big emitters like China and India wouldn’t even consider such taxes, what difference would if the next US administration even tried. Rising emissions are with us probably until some major energy breakthrough occurs, so the doomsday forecasters should save their energies since few people are listening.
It’s remarkable that people today in the 21st century, beneficiaries of a college education, surrounded by people who are at the pinnacle of human education, progress and prosperity, could hold a belief that humans on the surface of the earth have the capacity to alter the planet – in any way. The mass of this planet, the volume and energy of the oceans, the movement and collisions of the tectonic plates, the energy involved in earth’s rotation, the interaction and energy delivered to earth from the sun, the movement and flux changes in our solar system and galaxy as it rotates and moves through space. More and more it seems to me that this panic about CAGW is just a proxy or symptom of a religion where Man has replaced God at the center of their belief system.
Possession of a degree doesn’t necessarily mean that someone isn’t stupid.
I’m living proof! Cheers
Apparently we the people need to pay a fine for exhaling!
In the 50s and 60s grownups used to say that one day “they” would tax the air we breathe. Hint: “they” are today’s tyrannicals.
“If Trump, I’m afraid for the future”.
We’re living the results of these toxic people poisoning minds.
With Biden, the US future was looking very dim… as his light dims, so does the US.
The left and the leftist anti-CO2 agendas are the “existential threats” to mankind.
Trump left the US economy in ruins, 6 percent unemployment and only a 1 percent growth rate. That’s the main reason he wasn’t reelected.
This looks like a “pick you poison” election.
Deep-seated TDS.. Get some mental help !
With another 30 million “migrants” it’s Venezuela here we come at full speed.
Here is a summary of Biden’s economic accomplishments and more.
That is the exact kind of irrational rhetoric that will cause a 20yo incel to shoot Trump in the face.
scadsobees, ignore, meant for scvblwxq
“… One of the biggest hurdles to getting to net zero is that consumers still aren’t paying for putting carbon in the atmosphere …”
If the former secretary is worried about the amount of CO2 (“carbon”) we put into the atmosphere, she can be the first one to cease exhaling.
BTW, not surprised to see Bill Nye on the plane with Obama. Nye’s role in the Obama administration was probably as much political as anything else.
“Sally Jewell, who served as US Interior secretary from 2013 to 2017, said the climate stakes of the election in November “could not be higher” and that she’s “really afraid for the future of our planet” should former President Donald Trump return to the White House.”
I’d be more concerned for the people of the US (and the planet) if Trump doesn’t win and the GOP doesn’t gain control of both Houses of Congress.
(The Dems have been a disaster. JFK’s Democrat Party is long dead.)
Trump just might switch back to being a Democrat and the head of the party if elected just to spite them. No telling.
You are talking absolute empty-minded wacko-gibberish
Get some help for your deranged mental state before it is too late.
Yes, gibberish is a good way to describe it.
Reagan was originally a Democrat.
If Trump switched back to being a JFK Democrat rather than to a present Progressive Democrat, would that be bad?
(Would AOC and the rest of “The Squad” have had any standing back then?)
You are full of it. (In this regard)
What Trump has stood for (Look at his Scotus Justices) is a return to what our Constitutional Republic was intended to be. As long as that remains his goal, I don’t care what “Party Flag” he runs under.
(Mean tweets and all.)
Trump is not part of the uniparty. It’s why most of the Republicans look the other way when Democrats try to impeach, lawfare, jail and even shoot 🙁
You might be Jack Black. What’s next are you going to ask for a bullseye?
Hint, little girl.
Once Trump is elected, Obama will no longer be running the country… into the ground
Get used to it. !
Wait! Obama isn’t running the country … that brilliant moderate Joe Biden is … oh! wait. Oh myyyyy …
Jill picked the female DEI-brainwashed head of the secret service, who proved she is not up to the job.
That head claims it was too risky to have an agent on the sloped roof
However, it was not too risky for the sharpshooters on a similar sloped roof.
The 20 year old kid had no trouble being on that sloped roof, unpacking his rifle, and getting 8 or 9 shots off in a short time
That his first shot, at 130 yards, missed by 1 inch is a pure miracle
Senile, Alzheimer-afflicted, stumbling, bumbling, sniffing, bull’s eye, Biden had nothing to do with it, because he was busy changing his diaper
If Trump’s head hadn’t been turned, the bullet would have gone into his head just behind the ear, near the top of the brain stem… causing instant death.
“Obama”
He, who was videoed, stating he would be happy to see energy prices skyrocket.
“necessarily skyrocket”
because it is “necessary” to economically PUNISH energy use. In order to FORCE us plebes to change our behavior.
“Third-term” Obama and his socialistic, extremist cabal want to tank the US economy with high energy prices, similar to no-growth, no hope Europe, so his cabal can implement its dysfunctional, unaffordable wind, solar, battery scam, with deficit spending of $2 TRILLION PER YEAR, benefiting Democrat moneyed elites, and screwing all others.
That scam is based on the IPCC hoax, a trace gas CO2, 421 molecules per million molecules of dry air, is warming the entire planet, a totally preposterous proposition, based not on science, but on unscientific fakery, which the IPCC refuses to debate, because it has declared the “science” is settled, which is bull manure
If it’s “settled”, it ain’t science as I understand it to be.
Curious what the limit to “ molecules per million molecules” is. What could the number reach if we burnt all known coal, gas and oil?
The lesson here is we see how bad Obama’s department head choices were. Did I understand that she said we need economic incentives for people to pay for the carbon they put in the air?
I think she wants people to pay a penalty on CO2 so they don’t put as much in the air.
I live in BC, Canada and the carbon tax is $80 CDN per metric ton of CO2 equivalent, and it has had no effect on climate. The cost of food has increased greatly in the last decade. My son and I have spent about $5,000 on food so far this year.
We really don’t have to worry about CO2, because most of it is absorbed by oceans.
There is only 0.839 grams of CO2 per cubic meter of air.
Trump has Sally Jewell’s panties in a wad?
All the Democrats/Socialists are freaking out over a future Trump presidency.
And rightfully so, as Trump plans on dismantling the Democrat/Socialist agenda infesting the bureaucracies of the Exexcutive Branch.
The Democrats see themselves losing control and it is driving them crazy.
Your time is up, Democrats.
I hope so Tom, but I have low expectations. These people can’t be fired and if they are let go, then they just work for some corporation before they return.
Firing is very difficult. Unions, ya know. Instead, just move them to the basement and set them to work counting paper clips, distributing staples and checking the toilet paper supply.
Cut their budget, and force them not to communicate with the media, except when authorized, in writing, by the highest level Trump appointees
Any leaks will be grounds for dismissal
That photo resembles the passenger compartment of Air Force One, or at least a rather comfortable private jet. Nothing says “we must save the planet” like indulging in luxury air travel.
Goes to show that a Black Hawk helicopter can be customized quite nicely for a quarter of a billion.
I can’t work out how Bill Nye, the slime it guy, managed to gain a seat?
Well, up until he was deposed by faucci, he was Bill Nye, The Science (guy).
It is time these people were put in stocks and pelted with rotten eggs and rotten tomatoes for all the hogwash they are spouting. Everyone walking past and laughing at them would silence them.
That makes it sound like they need Secret Service protection.
We could set them on a 3:12 pitch so the secrete service wouldn’t be able to intercede.
There’s that cooling rhetoric from the left.
How can you put ‘ carbon ‘ in the atmosphere ?
Obviously, former Obama US Interior secretary, Sally Jewell, can’t tell the difference between “Carbon” and “Carbon Dioxide. Shouldn’t an Interior Secretary know the difference? Isn’t that part of the job?
Obviously, Sally Jewell, is not qualified to be Interior Secretary. Typical for Democrat adminsistrations who are more interested in checking a box when appointing people to jobs, than in finding the most qualified person to fill the job.
I agree. Just yesterday I was drilling out a graphite electrode for an experiment. There was quite a bit of carbon floating about but it all settled out after a few seconds.
It is called “soot”. Older Diesel engines emitted lots of soot.
But they get real good fuel economy. New diesels don’t smoke but get very shitty fuel economy. Took a lot of work but the EPA managed to get diesel engine efficiency down to the same level as an old gasoline engine.
So… when are we going to bomb China and India’s coal plants? They’re making a hell of a lot of them, so many that no matter what the US does the CO2 will keep going up.
Well, looks like the usual hysteria about how we’s all gonna die if we don’t make lots of windmills and solar panels…
There is only about 0.839 grams of CO2 per cubic meter of air. That is not very much.
Round up these anti-CO2 advocates and send them to china and/or india. That will show ’em.
I would like a lot more CO2 in the atmosphere. 🤷♂️
You have a point. Them coal burning plants can’t be considered anything but one of those existential threats … the kind that endanger stuff and things, ranging from national security, to freezing fires and floods, and all the way down to longer days (as the earth gets fatter).
We have not only a right, but an obligation to bomb the shit out of them.
(O.K., for people that have Sally’s ear … I am being sarcastic … I don’t believe the earth is getting fatter.)
Being a member of the political party that lied about Trump Russia collusion (Hillary did), Ukraine quid pro quo (Biden did), about Charleston and J6, and of course, catastrophic human induced climate change she has zero credibility. The fact is if we were to continue the energy and agricultural policies they espouse while the WEF and Communist China would be happy, The United States would be in melt down and billions around the world would die from starvation.
Your last sentence perfectly describes UN agenda 2030.
Sally who?
Jewell grew up in the State of Washington** and attended the University of Washington. She was on the board of Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI).
**The State of Washington has a Carbon fee {the word tax is not allowed to be written or spoken about by WA politicians}. Anyway (If I may use that term), she should know that WA residents are “paying for putting carbon in the atmosphere“. It does little good: my high temp today is 100°F while it was only 96° on Monday. 🥵
You probably just aren’t paying enough. Bump it up by another 17% and it might not be so hot.
(Sally needs to tell us how much she is contributing to the various carbon fee structure. The fact that she may not live in Washington does not any limit her from participating.)

Sally Jewell should take it up with Narendra Modi and Xi Jinping.
So the democrat party is referred to as “our planet” now?
Democrats think they own everything.
