The BBC has a story today about the heatwave in May and early June the southwestern U.S. and Mexico. Apparently, a report by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) group has claimed that climate change made the heatwave 35 times more likely, though exactly what that means goes unexplained.
The World Weather Attribution (WWA) group studied excess heat between May and early June, when the U.S. heatwave was concentrated in south-west states including California, Nevada and Arizona.
Extreme temperatures in Mexico also claimed lives during the period.
Such attribution studies take some time to complete, so it is too soon for scientists to say how much of a role climate change is playing in the current heatwave stretching from the centre of the U.S. through to the north-east and into Canada.
In their new report, the scientists said such a heatwave was now four times more likely than it was in the year 2000, driven by planet-warming emissions.
Many extreme weather events including heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense as a result of climate change, experts say.
“The results of our study should be taken as another warning that our climate is heating to dangerous levels,” said Izidine Pinto, Researcher at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute.
“Potentially deadly and record-breaking temperatures are occurring more and more frequently in the U.S., Mexico and Central America due to climate change.
“As long as humans fill the atmosphere with fossil fuel emissions, the heat will only get worse – vulnerable people will continue to die and the cost of living will continue to increase.”
The WWA study focused on a region including the US south-west and Mexico, as well as Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Honduras which also saw dangerously high temperatures.
The interesting thing about that BBC story is the complete lack of any mention of the spectacular plunge in temperatures across the northwestern United States as a major winter storm crossed over the Rockies into Montana and Idaho. Newsweek has the story:
The calendar may be showing a date in summer, but no one seems to have told the weather — with forecasters warning of a “winter storm” for some areas despite it being mid-June.
Parts of Montana and Idaho were both hit with a “winter storm warning” by the National Weather Service (NWS), which published a map on Monday showing which regions were to be affected. Up to 15 inches of snow was possible in some areas overnight, the experts said, as they warned of the dangers for drivers and possible power outages.
WUSA9 has a video of the effects. Of course, the American West has always been prone to such extreme events, as USA Today points out:
Great Falls is scorching hot.
Great Falls is frigid.
During a week of weather extremes in the U.S., it all depends on which Great Falls the mercury is measured.
In Great Falls, Virginia, Luke Mraz, lugged a 100-pound hose around a golf course, spraying pond water over several acres of dry grass as the temperature climbed to 92 degrees.
“It feels like the moisture is literally just getting sucked right out of your body,” the 27-year-old said.
In Great Falls, Montana, a 127-year-old record for cold fell with temperatures reaching 45 degrees, according to the local National Weather Service office. A freak June mountain snowstorm even enticed a few skiers up to Showdown, the local ski hill.
“After a less-than-typical snowfall year, we’re welcoming the moisture,” said Avery Patrick, one of the resort’s owners.
Of course, the BBC stuck resiliently to the story about a heat dome in the U.S. (but managed a fleeting mention of the Montana storm in an online report that had to be hunted down for Daily Sceptic). Make of all that what you will.
The BBC is an organization which refuses to describe Hamas as terrorists, though they have been officially classified as such by the UK Government.
A presenter recently took this to its logical conclusion. She described the Hamas terrorists of the Oct 7 atrocities as ‘people working for Hamas’.
Sort of like temporary contractors, were they, maybe?
The British have, in the BBC, a state broadcaster whose main aim seems to be to knock the country at every opportunity, to condone terrorism and promote climate hysteria.
They have a nationalized health service which has 8 million people on waiting lists for treatment, the worst avoidable death rates in Europe, long waits for cancer diagnosis and treatments. And it spends its energy trying to stop its staff calling mothers it treats ‘mothers’, instead referring to them as ‘birthing parents’, and feeding their newborns as ‘chest feeding’ rather than ‘breast feeding’.
Their political class along with the Guardian and BBC keep telling them that both institutions are the envy of the world….
The NHS, michel, is a problem that cannot be solved – easily. This is one of the nation’s most sacred cows and anyone of any political colour who tries to reform or tinker with it it is in for big trouble. Years ago Blair decided to utilise private clinics for simple things – day surgery – to get the lists down and he was accused of privatising the….
The only answer as far as the left is concerned is always more billions. It’s never changing how they work. Bar emergencies, the weekends are completely inactive. How many procedures and operations could be carried out? A few, I’ll be bound. Not to mention scans, x-rays etc etc etc
The doctors, for my money, are the real problem. They want to treat the world for free and they are… wholly woke.
The NHS employs a lot of well-paid managers, right up to the Chief Exec on a handsome 6 figure salary. You’d have thought that with all this managerial talent the NHS would be a beacon of efficiency…
My wife was a relatively senior administrative manager in the local NHS. She spent about half of her time reorganising services according to the latest Government / Department of Health dictat. The reorganisations barely had time to settle in before it was all change again.
They want to treat everyone for free, but they don’t want to give up their big salaries.
Heal thyself.
They don’t condone all terrorists.
If God forbid, somebody try to pray while across the street from an abortion clinic, you will be locked up faster than you can say “amen”, and the BBC will cheer on the government.
You just constantly misrepresent the truth don’t you Mark. She was not arrested for praying. “Along with other anti-abortion activists, Harlow used force and physical obstruction to execute the blockade, according to the Department of Justice.”
So why not tell the truth? You could make a reasonable case that giving her jail time for this is not good. But saying it was for praying is just a lie. Here you can read about it (if you want to be “informed” not “misinformed.”

And before you start on about climate protesters not being arrested…. I agree, the law should be the same irrespective of who is committing the crime.
Interesting comment, from you. I was enlightened recently to the effect that, as far as “terrorists” are concerned, Hamas is a bit of a failure – according to the Israeli government….. Oh, and do not forget that Hamas was an Israeli construct. Do you not believe me? A quick Google search will confirm that…..
But, here are the figures of deaths caused by Hamas: https://sonar21.com/the-hard-facts-about-palestinian-terrorism-debunk-western-narrative/
So….what about the rape, torture, and murder of girls dancing at a peace festival on October 7—actions proudly posted by the terrorists on social media? No big deal, right? Even excusable in context, no?
How about cooking live babies in front of their mothers? Hamas posted videos of that too.
The Palestinians have been slaughtered and expelled en masse by their Arab neighbors, who seem to universally detest them. Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Kuwait——all have ethnically cleansed themselves of Palestinians in the last 60 years. Israel has treated Palestinian Arabs far better than any other nation in the Middle East. Peaceful Arabs in Israel are thriving, with civil rights, prosperity, representation in the government.
Hamas represents the Palestinians who are hate-filled toward Jews. Separate yourself from them. They are losers who keep making self-destructive choices, while engaging in disgusting acts. And they promise to keep doing so.
The BBC comprises a bunch of extreme left wing Marxist/Leninists; who are to a man, all anti Semites who would love Israel to be swept into the sea. They want nothing more than see the black flag of Islam to fly over Downing street and Buckingham Palace.
Something – aside from the weather – isn’t going according to script.
BBC Pushes… every alarmist angle it can think of.
We know the BBCs target audience is primarily the young. First, in the EU the left were gobsmacked at the voting tendencies of the young helping to return populist parties across the bloc. Could that be repeated in the UK?
“”Telling an audience in Cheshire on Thursday “the one thing UKIP and the Brexit Party never succeeded in doing was reaching significant numbers of young people”, Mr Farage said Reform was now achieving just that.
…
Mr Farage said: “this is fascinating… Generation Z, ‘Gen-Z’, the 15-25s, something remarkable is happening, I mean truly remarkable is happening. And our support in that age bracket, is rapidly going up. The followings I’ve built up on TikTok, Instagram is amazing.””
https://www.breitbart.com/europe/2024/06/21/farage-hails-zoomer-surge-as-young-flock-right/
Today the BBC is dutifully ramping up the hype…
“”Climate change made US and Mexico heatwave 35 times more likely””
“”Olympics 2024: how extreme weather could impact Paris games””
Etc
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/topics/cmj34zmwm1zt
Given the stranglehold of education and the media on climate change etc, Mr Farage’s observations must be causing somethiing of a panic at the beeb.
“”BBC Question Time has been accused of bias after viewers lashed out at the broadcaster’s audience in York. Viewers demanded an Ofcom investigation after voters selected to grill leaders were labelled “woke liberals”.
…
A viewer said: “The Question Time audience must have been bussed in specially from Labour Central. The bias is shocking. I knew there was a reason that I hadn’t watched it in years.”
Another wrote: “That leaders debate on the BBC was so skewed to left-wing bias you just knew that Sunak would not get an easy ride. Not that he should but the lefty liberals always get a much softer interrogation and appreciative audience.” A third added: “A stacked deck of woke liberal audience.””
…
The BBC already came under fire after Reform UK’s leader Nigel Farage was not invited to the event. A user said: “Absolute bias b******s from BBC, YET AGAIN Where is Nigel Farage?

Nice try, BBC.

According to the BBC an ‘expert’ is anyone who conveniently backs up the BBC’s own agenda regardless of that person’s real status.
Once upon a time the BBC knew what the phrase ‘the truth’ meant but sadly it doesn’t anymore. Any integrity the BBC had has long gone and it is now no better than the rags it once had the substance to ridicule and put in their place. Unfortunately the BBC is now in that very same place it once allotted to others.
Yes there are more and more lame appeals to authority – scientists say, an expert says ….
An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made, in a narrow field.
Niels Bohr
An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made, in a narrow field and learned nothing in the process.
Fixed it.
Ahh.. Great Falls, Montana. I remember being stopped for speeding there. We made eye contact at a closing speed probably in excess of 150mph. He fined me $5. Those were the days.
I’m sitting here in Argentina, watching the heat dome stories, from both the US and Hajj in Saudi Arabia, and thinking: since here we have so much snow the pass to Chile is closed for two weeks and the ski resorts, like Las Lenas, can’t open for at least another week, due to excess snow and avalanches, somewhere between here and there it is just right, totally normal, Goldilocks can eat the porridge, and the BBC, et al, and not interested in normal, because it does not fit their agenda.
OT, but South Australia using 76% GAS and 12% diesel.
This is ridiculous for a state that “prides” itself on its renewables.
NSW 81% coal and gas, 13% hydro
Qld 95% Coal and gas
Vic 84% coal and gas, 10% hydro.
My attribution study, based on solid data, not silly computer games…says…
Wind and solar.. ARE USELESS !!
Do us a favour….
Tell that to Keir Starmer
Maybe AI will prove to be pro-hydrocarbon.
Where is Saint Nicholas?
Re-fitting his sleigh with electric thrusters to avoid contributing to the ‘Methane Crisis.’
Saturday Morning
SA now 79% gas, 14% diesel.. PLENTY of CO2, thanks SA 🙂
NSW 85% coal and gas.. mostly coal
Qld 90% coal and gas.. mostly coal
Vic 88% coal and gas.. mostly coal
COAL IS KING
At 202406201500 AEST the AEMO “Fuel Use” chart showed: Batteries 203MW.
I’m going to assume South Australia. I recall when they had diesel generators scattered around Adelaide for their ‘final’ backup.
Meanwhile here in the southeastern US it’s been unusually cool for this time of year. Much cooler than 15 years ago. So far it hasn’t gotten to 90. The forecast is for it to get to the upper 90s this week. In 2008 it was over 100 by June 1.
Here in south-east Arizona the question is, when does the Monsoon Season begin? Officially, after three consecutive days with the dew point at 53°F or higher. Today is day three, if I can believe earth null-school.
We had our first thunder storm about three hours after I posted the above.
“.. it is too soon for scientists to say how much of a role climate change is playing…”
…but we’re going to tell you how much of a role climate change is playing anyway.
Four times more likely than in 2000? Really? I think I’ll call BS on that one.
Good idea. I think I’ll also call BS on “fill the atmosphere with fossil fuel emissions”. When did 0.01% become “fill”? (if indeed we were actually responsible for any of that, and that’s not obvious either, although I’m prepared to accept it for the sake of argument)
The Junuary snow storm was a bit of a dud unlike the one in late
May which dumped 4+ft of wet heavy snow in the LIttle Belts and
knocked out power and snapped power poles around the region.
This is after the warmest open winter I’ve ever seen.
Didn’t we see this same alarmism last year…. and the year before…. and the year before that?
“Blather, spin, repeat”
WWA… consider…. yet another UN alphabet group.
All Hail the One World Order.
The heat of Hunga Tonga is so yesterday, we are under the influence of Canadian forest fire particulates in the Stratosphere now.
1983- Canada wildfires – area burned annually – 2023 Canadian wildfires – Wikipedia
A significant drop in transmission was detected last month on the big island.
ESRL Global Monitoring Laboratory – Global Radiation and Aerosols (noaa.gov)
Is so yesterday.
Have the years pass so quickly that the Tonga emitted water vapor polluting the ozone layer has dissipated?
It is in the last year of its effect (HT H2O), but this amount of ash blocking sunlight overrides that forcing, at least in the Northern Hemisphere, just as HT overrode the waning cooling effects of the 2019-2020 Aust. fire stratospheric black carbon particulates.
There could still be damage occuring to the ozone layer, but incoming solar is dropping, Dubai freak floods, June snowstorms and such. These are no-doubt responses to a rapidly cooling world.
The Stratosphere is a highly responsive control of Earth’s climate, there is a significantly elevated chance of an extreme winter in the Northern Hemisphere.
These guys don’t appreciate a genius of rebranding “Global Warming” as “Climate Change”. They are firmly stuck in the past. No cold waves reported.
According to their ideology, cold waves, just like snow, is a thing of the past.
Since they are a thing of the past, they obviously aren’t happening, and no good reporter would want to ruin their reputation by reporting on things that aren’t happening.
You should start with run away greenhouse effect and carry it forward to the precipice.
The BBC sees every weather event of any sort, anywhere, to be divine confirmation of its own Looney Climate Religion.
“World Weather Attribution (WWA) group has claimed that climate change made the heatwave 35 times more likely, though exactly what that means goes unexplained.”
What it means is that given Climate Change Hype (CCH) and the explosion of available 24 hr media since 1978, a ‘heatwave’ such as this is 35 times more likely to be reported as significant when compared to the 1978 reporting.
It translates to climate propaganda has made the headlines 35 times more likely than 2020.
From the point of view of absorption of infrared radiation by additional CO2 in the atmosphere, the resulting temperature rise is greater in winter than in summer. The absolute humidity (mole fraction water vapor in the atmosphere) is higher in summer than in winter, and the water vapor absorbs most of the available IR radiation, leaving very little for CO2 to absorb.
Increasing CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere may cause winters to be slightly milder, but have little effect on summer heat waves, or the climate in tropical areas.
As for the June snow in Montana, it’s regrettable for those who live there, but if warm air is advected northward during a heat wave somewhere else (such as the east coast), the air can’t accumulate over the Arctic Ocean–it has to go southward at some other longitude, and bring unusually cold weather there.
For sheer lunacy not much can beat this, “As long as humans fill the atmosphere with fossil fuel emissions, the heat will only get worse – vulnerable people will continue to die and the cost of living will continue to increase.” Where’s the evidence to support “filling” the atmosphere and more importantly, how the hell does increasing emissions affect inflation. It must be the fault of CO2.
“In their new report, the scientists said such a heatwave was now four times more likely than it was in the year 2000,”
It was hotter in all these localities in the 1930s. Using consensus arithmetic, then, the June winter storm in the NW is attributable to global cooling.
Does the BBC and much of the rest of the mainstream media ever miss the opportunity to blow any climate/weather anomaly out of proportion? Do they ever point out the benefits of a warming climate or of fossil fuel use? No for both questions, and that’s the reason they have lost so much credibility and why the majority of populations worldwide don’t intend to accept new environmental taxes and restrictions.
Heat waves in the US.
I made this comment under another post.
“The hottest temperature recorded in Ohio was 113 degrees Fahrenheit on July 21, 1934, near Gallipolis.
And, speaking of heat waves, for my little spot in central Ohio (Columbus area),
20-Jul 101 1934 (tied the 1930 record)
1930
21-Jul 106 1934 (all time record high)
22-Jul 104 1901
23-Jul 99 1933
24-Jul 102 1934
25-Jul 104 1934
26-Jul 102 1934
For those 7 days, July 20 to July 26, 5 of them set (with one tie) record high for the day. One of them was also the all time high for the area.”
I think that week in 1934 would qualify as a genuine heat wave.
BBC, do you agree?
I was in Yellowstone Sunday and Monday. On Monday there were snow flurries, and it was 37 degrees, but nothing stuck.
Must of gotten down into the 20’s overnight, but I wasn’t staying in the park.
First time I ever drove across the US back in the Summer of 1982, we were passing through Salt Lake City heading East on July 4th, and we detoured to stop at Yellowstone for a day or two.
In the Hills just outside of town (Salt Lake City, Utah), it was snowing to beat the band as we ascended and turned northward.
It had been over 100° just minutes prior as we crossed the Bonneville Salt Flats, but it was snowing in the middle of the afternoon on July 4th, and it kept snowing the next day.
On July 7th, I woke up at the campground in Yellowstone after sleeping in the car overnight. It had been a warm day on the 6th, and not-a-cloud-in-the-sky clear.
As I awoke, I could not see out of the car, and had to spend about 15-20 minutes scraping the 1/2 to 3/4 inches of frost off of the windshield of the car.
I recall that morning very vividly, as a few hours later that car was smashed to a crumpled wreck, my friend was dead, and I was having an emergency laparotomy after being resuscitated by paramedics and rushed to Lake Hospital near the West Thumb of Lake Yellowstone.
Where is the support for the assertion that it is driven by emissions, let alone an explanation for how the likelihood was derived?
