Editor Note: The House yesterday passed a concurrent resolution “expressing the sense of Congress that a carbon tax would be detrimental to the United States economy.” Ten Democrats joined all but one Republican (Brian Fitzpatrick, PA) in the 222–196 victory. A free-market, winning policy on climate is to not support any legislation that increases either taxes or energy prices, directly or indirectly.
Expressing the sense of Congress that a carbon tax would be detrimental to the United States economy.
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
January 25, 2024
Mr. Zinke (for himself, Mr. Scalise, Mr. Bost, Mr. Clyde, Mr. Crenshaw, Mr. Perry, Mr. Ogles, Mr. Jackson of Texas, Mrs. Miller of Illinois, Mr. Lamborn, Mrs. Miller of West Virginia, Mr. Carey, Mr. Langworthy, and Mr. Pfluger) submitted the following concurrent resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Ways and Means
CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
Expressing the sense of Congress that a carbon tax would be detrimental to the United States economy.
- Whereas a carbon tax is a Federal tax on carbon released from fossil fuels;
- Whereas a carbon tax will increase energy prices, including the price of gasoline, electricity, natural gas, and home heating oil;
- Whereas a carbon tax will mean that families and consumers will pay more for essentials like food, gasoline, and electricity;
- Whereas a carbon tax will fall hardest on the poor, the elderly, and those on fixed incomes;
- Whereas a carbon tax will lead to more jobs and businesses moving overseas;
- Whereas a carbon tax will lead to less economic growth;
- Whereas American families will be harmed the most from a carbon tax;
- Whereas, according to the Energy Information Administration, the share of energy consumption during 2023 in the United States that was derived from fossil fuels was approximately 80 percent;
- Whereas a carbon tax will increase the cost of every good manufactured in the United States;
- Whereas a carbon tax will impose disproportionate burdens on certain industries, jobs, States, and geographic regions and would further restrict the global competitiveness of the United States;
- Whereas American ingenuity has led to innovations in energy exploration and development and has increased production of domestic energy resources on private and State-owned land which has created significant job growth and private capital investment;
- Whereas the energy policy of the United States should encourage continued private sector innovation and development and not increase the existing tax burden on manufacturers;
- Whereas the production of American energy resources increases the ability of the United States to maintain a competitive advantage in today’s global economy;
- Whereas a carbon tax would reduce America’s global competitiveness and would encourage development abroad in countries that do not impose this exorbitant tax burden; and Whereas the Congress and the President should focus on pro-growth solutions that encourage increased development of domestic resources: Now therefore, be it
Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That it is the sense of Congress that a carbon tax would be detrimental to American families and businesses, and is not in the best interest of the United States.

A carbon tax won’t change the climate one iota, nor will reducing man-made CO2 emissions.
Until after the 2024 election should Brandon be reelected
Any tax would be detrimental to American families and businesses and is not in the interests of the United States.
Biden is propsing a $5 Trillion tax increase in his next budget.
Biden and the Democrats are insane.
Must be getting close to election time ….
😉
Promises… Promises
Normally you can’t believe anything that comes out of the mouth of politicians.
However, during election years, you can believe the exact opposite of what they say
Not always, but, yes, usually.
(Brandon’s recent attempt to blame the border invasion on Republicans is a good example.)
Look at what they said and did and voted for BEFORE an election year.
Then vote accordingly.
Stuff like this shows how useless Congress is. Nice but unnecessary, as Biden isn’t proposing a carbon tax. How about pass appropriations. How about fix immigration law. How about Ukraine. Get off your butts and work on important stuff for a change.
Stuff like this proves the axiom that Con-gress IS the opposite of Pro-gress
Wag the dog
Wag the dog
‘How about fix immigration law.’
Is there a problem with current laws or the Administration’s failure to enforce same?
Current border laws are not the problem. Some parts of the border laws could be improved like doing away with the one about being born in the Unied States automatically makes one an American citizen. And there are many other areas of this law that need improving.
But as far as preventing illegal immigration goes, the president has all the authority he needs to stop the flow. Trump was stopping the flow using current border laws and then Biden came in and completely reversed everything Trump had done with Executive Orders and now we have millions of illegal immigrants flooding the United States.
The House of Representatives have already passed a new border law and sent it to the U.S. Senate for a vote nine months ago, and the Democrat-controlled Senate has refused to consider the bill.
Instead, the Democrat-controlled U.S. Senate created their own border bill which basically codifies every bad thing Biden is currently doing at the border and then adds a few more bad things. They call it a bipartisan border bill but only a few Republican Senators voted for it.
The border bill written by the House of Representatives restricts illegal immigration, including funding to complete the border wall, for example..
The border bill written by the U.S. Senate encourages illegal immigration.
Naturally, the insane Democrats want the bill written by the U.S. Senate. That was the whole point of Senate Leader Shumer refusing to consider the House bill and then creating a Senate version.
But that Senate border bill is dead in the water in the House of Representatives.
So Biden deceptively uses this situation to try to blame the border crisis he created on Republicans.
The truth is the Republicans created a solid border bill nine months ago and the Democrats want to pretend it doesn’t exist.
All true. Given that Biden won’t uphold any restrictions on illegal immigration, I was just wondering why Rud emphasized changing the laws.
I agree. Rud should explain.
I don’t know what Rud meant but, laws should be changed so an illegal immigrant isn’t “entitled” to one dime of taxpayer money.
If private charities want to help them, no problem.
But they don’t become entitled to the benefits of being a US citizen the moment they cross the border.
(He11! Many US citizens aren’t “entitled” to the taxpayer money the Government hand out to them!)
Just look to Canada to see the public’s reaction to carbon taxation. It has not only caused living costs to rise but also has had a negligible effect on consumers’ lifestyles, or business and industrial operations and the associated emissions. In fact with a federal election coming up within the next 12-18 months, polls show that tax will be largely responsible for the governing Liberals and their NDP flunkies as being likely to be voted out of office. As well, , Canada has had a consistently bad record with its climate plans during the past 35 years as all eight of them have fallen far short of their targets, and the latest one is off to an inauspicious start.
Never could figure out why any Canadian with a functional mind would be against a degree or so warming. !
All of the hominids evolved within about 10 degrees latitude of the equator.
We are tropical creatures. Canada is at least 15 degrees too cold!
That’s why90% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the U.S. border.
Must be their close proximity to New York
Canadians, just like the people in the United States, have been in a temperauture downtrend since the 1930’s.
CO2 has had no effect on the temperatures in North America. CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere have increased since the 1930’s but the temperatures have not increased. No effect.
That’s so they can go to Costco.
Never could figure out why any Canadian with a functional mind would think that our 1.5% of global emissions could have any effect at all on global temperature.
Nor we in the UK with our 1%, David!
Not to mention, Canada has over 300 billion trees in its Boreal forest which only have to grow by 1 Kg of cellulose and lignin each tree to offset Canada’s entire anthropogenic emissions, and global greening is likely resulting in more than 2Kg per tree in each new growth ring. Need I mention expansion of the boreal forest as permafrost moves Northward (supposedly) 120 km in 50 years (weather network)
Canada’s CO2 emissions from fossil fuels = 548 Megatons (from statista.com)
= 548 x 10^9 Kg. = 548 x 12/44 = 150 x 10^9 Kg of elemental C
Dry wood approx 50% elemental C
So 150 x 10^9 Kg of elemental C will be 300×10^9 Kg of wood.
300x 10^9 Kg of wood/ 300 Billion trees = 1 Kg of wood per tree.
It is clear that the Trudeau government’s fixation on CO2 is more about wealth distribution from people who have to drive to work, farm, heat their houses, and so on… to people who live in their parents basements and in big city condos…both big voter demographics for him.
Washington state did just that. A gallon of regular was $5.25 last summer while on holiday. As if this is stopping India and other Asian countries as they continue to build more coal-fired power plants. A state economist recently reveal the lie Governor Inslee perpetrated on the citizenry. He said it would be a few pennies increase. Not so. The cost was passed onto the consumer. The stupidity is stupendous.
So I’ll probably owe the feds coin if I burn my toast, too!
Good!
In Washington State the word “tax” is not allowed, so the bright brains that run things passed a law without that word.
“In 2021, the Washington Legislature passed the Climate Commitment Act (CCA) which establishes a comprehensive, market-based program to reduce carbon pollution and achieve the greenhouse gas limits set in state law. The program started on Jan. 1, 2023, and the first emissions allowance auction was held on Feb. 28. ”
Note the “carbon pollution”
The cost of living in WA State immediately jumped. Regular gasoline is near the highest in the Nation. I just paid $4.30/gal for regular. Counties west of the Cascades have a 30¢ additional. The National average is $3.53.
If I remember correctly there was an Initiative in 2016 and another in 2018 that both got shot down by the voters to do what the democrat party WA state legislature did to the state with this legislation. The voters shot the thing down twice.
Those were written to fund “green” schist. After the funds were to go to road improvements — it passed.
Several initiatives made the ballot this year to repeal some climate stuff and other pieces of legislative malfeasance. One would (in effect) make several legislators and other politicians who are proposing a state income tax turn around and grab their ankles to facilitate putting that notion where it belongs.
Gas on Whidbey Island has been under $4 for some time.
Yesterday gas here, Vancouver Island, was $1.95 a litre. An American gallon is 4 litres, you figure it out. Most of that cost is tax of one sort or another and tomorrow the carbon tax is increasing. Most of the statements in the resolution apply north of the border. That cockwomble Trudeau has to go.
The carbon tax will bankrupt the middle class. The rich get out of the carbon tax like they do all taxes. Of course, the rich will pay a token amount to show their good deeds.
The first year of the carbon tax, it will be half a trillion dolllars. The carbon tax will double each year.
The new methane tax is priced so that it will do the same thing as it bankrupts the energy companies. Eventually no one will be able to afford the cost of fossil fuel energy.
If you want to discourage something, you tax it.
So why do Democrats insist on raising taxes on businesses? Answer: Some Democrats are stupid, and some Democrats don’t care about what happens to a business, as long as they get more money for their own use.
Very nice, proud of my legislator.
Unless it includes things like diamonds, tires, Bucky Balls, graphite used in manufacture, etc it is not a comprehensive carbon tax.
I have certainly been on phone and email to our reps about this stupidity.
How many quadrillions could be raised if they taxed the hot air coming from the mouths of those promoting the various incarnations of “CAGW”?
Last night I heard one of Canada’s carbon tax proponents claim that since the country has instituted it, its emissions have dropped by 5%. Except if Canada’s share of global emissions was all of 1.6% that reduction lowers it to 1.52%. So if anyone believes this type of action will solve the so-called climate crisis problem, he’d not only give his head a shake but also pound it against a brick wall for awhile, especially when China, the US and India together account for 52% of emissions and none has adopted any form of carbon taxation.
