The “Elite” will keep ratcheting down on the lives of the un-connected hoi polloi until the majority have nothing left to lose. Things will go non-linear chaotic and all bets are off.

Soon they’ll propose withholding medical treatment to anyone older than 65.

I have seen such ideas floated over the past couple years. Can’t recall where I read about them though. IIRC Canada was one of those places.

Then comes the Peace Centers (euthanasia)

Once again, Canada on the forefront with the crazy expansions of their MAID program.

Then comes … Soylent Green

As long as this does not come to America, I should be fine. My daily driver vehicle will soon be coming up on 40 years old. Frustrating that some replacement parts are no longer made, but I do have to laugh at others having some fear of hackers and/or government controlers finding a way to connect into their vehicles’ computers. No way for that to happen to mine.

Meanwhile, in the USA and maybe other places, there is a movement regarding the right-to-repair.
I do not see a mention of “age” in the material of this topic. Many personal autos have end of life episodes prior to 15 years but with care and repair they do last longer. I see work vehicles, such as tractors, that are 40 years old.
The fear of CO2 is causing mental illness in elites.

The *unwarranted* fear of CO2 is causing mental illness in elites.

There is no evidence showing that anyone should fear CO2.

There is a blizzard of alarmist climate change propaganda that distorts the truth and strikes fear in Elites and average folks alike over CO2.

The regulation introduces the idea of a “residual vehicle”.

Once residual, the cars, vans, etc would be barred from undergoing significant repairs and would likely be scrapped, i.e. the EU intend to classify older cars whose repair costs exceed their market value and could also be classified as residual.

Ploughing through official EU pronouncements is a diabolical exercise. It’s almost as if they deliberately make it impossible for anyone to find out what they are planning to do. However, this seems to confirm the worst fears about older vehicles:
Parliamentary question – E-003732/2023
European Parliament

The Commission’s proposal on the management of end-of-life vehicles[1] has aroused serious concern in Sweden – among people driving older cars with a low market value that are not classified as vintage vehicles, among people who repair older cars as a hobby, and among those who have an older vehicle as a real investment. There are concerns that the proposal will force those most in need, or people who make repairs themselves for environmental and financial reasons, to scrap their cars.
1.Has the Commission considered what restrictions the proposal would have on property rights and on people’s right to decide when and how to scrap their car, regardless of the market value?
2.Has the Commission looked into the impact the proposed changes could have on the sale of car parts on the hobby market and the small-scale car parts market?
3.Has the Commission considered the effects of the proposed scrapping requirement on households that own older cars with a low market value that are not classified as vintage vehicles? In particular, that would include vehicles that would cost more than their market value to have repaired commercially, but whose owners have both the intention and opportunity to repair damage themselves at a lower cost, for example by reusing used parts.

(11) [] It is therefore necessary to provide legally-binding precise criteria allowing to determine an end-of-life vehicle.[]

Article 24 establishes an obligation to deliver all end-of-life vehicles to authorised treatment facilities.
Article 25 specifies obligation of authorised treatment facilities to issue certificates of destruction for all treated end-of-life vehicles.
Article 26 lists the obligations of vehicle owners to deliver their vehicles to an authorised treatment facility when it reaches the end-of-life stage and to present the subsequent certificate of destruction for the vehicle’s deregistration.

I watch the Motor Trend channel that covers every kind of subject pertaining to cars, new and old, and there are female mechanics working away. There’s even one program called “Two Girls and a Garage”. You ought to see those gals tear apart and rebuild an engine!

I think I can safely say there would be an uproar if some U.S. politician proposed causing any harm to older cars, or trying to junk them. Older cars are BIG business in the United States and getting bigger.

Some “older” cars are not really old at all. Everything but the car body is brand new: The frame, the suspension, the brakes, the engine, the electronics, the interiors.

Some politicians want to take all that away over an unsubstantiated claim about CO2? I don’t think that’s going to work.

The new paradigm is focused on the three Rs.
Redact, Reduce, Remove.
The Club of Rome’s modern socialists have adopted the inverse language of Orwell’s 1984. The ‘woke folk’ or controllers, to use the more descriptive title, demand, never convince, just demand everyone adopts their latest progressive retrograde policy.
Reporters of truth, are now described as conspiracy theorists. Even when the data being reported is formal policy documentation or even as in this case EU legislation, anyone reporting the actual impact of the draconian policies being enacted is accused of fear mongering or a conspiracy spreader.
Here in the UK, our once open friendly cities are increasingly being shut down. Whole areas are being ghettoised under the Orwellian policy called, Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN).
The reason for banning traffic flow is to enhance the neighbourhood and remove traffic for the benefit of the residents…apparently?. What it is actually doing is creating closed no go areas.

The 1985 film was Brazil, directed by Terry Gilliam. Screenplay also by Tom Stoppard. Lead is Jonathon Pryce. Bob Hoskins. Michael Palin. Robert De Niro as Tuttle the guerilla repairman. What a cast!
Plus dark, Pythonesque humour and Gilliam’s visual brilliance.

Still a must-watch movie. Even more so today, unfortunately.

The Woke have no problem with people owning old cars they just won’t be allowed to use them.
It is the same with all Net Zero/woke policies, you will be allowed to have a gas boiler but you won’t be allowed to use it. You can have as many ICE powered vehicles as you like, but you won’t be allowed to use them
The ultimate in this woke direction is, you will have a vote, but you won’t be allowed to use it……

Try reading this (link posted by Isaak Walton):
Is it true that the European Union will ban the repair of old cars?
It’s Newspeak. Orwell speak. Or in common language, everything from obfuscation to flat out lies.

It turns itself absolutely inside-out trying, and failing, to deny that you won’t be allowed to maintain old cars.

It all hinges on what is a residual vehicle in the proposed legislation. If you thought that a residual vehicle was one that was unable to be repaired, then the author puts you straight – a residual vehicle is one that “CAN BE considered as irreparable”.

So the legislation really does intend to prevent people from maintaining old cars. No matter how convinced you are that your car can be repaired, no matter how much work and skill and money you are prepared to put into it, if a bureaucrat thinks it might not be a good idea to repair your car then you are not allowed to repair it.

Bye bye personal freedom, personal choice.

Hi gang! I’ve had to create a new user ID to log in here. Not happy about it but hey-ho, I’m not happy about a lot of stuff.

I’ve read ANNEX I CRITERIA FOR DETERMINATION WHETHER A USED VEHICLE IS AN END-OF-LIFE VEHICLE. I was pretty much OK with it because most of it describes vehicles that would fail an annual MoT inspection and we’re used to that. But the final criterion was this stinker:

(g) its repair requires the replacement of the engine, gearbox, shell, or chassis

assembly, resulting in the loss of the vehicle’s original identity.

Or how about this one:

A vehicle may be considered technically irreparable when … (f) its brakes and steering components are excessively worn.

I stopped at that point. I decided it had to be a troll, not a real EU document. (I read a lot of EU documents for work and they tend to be gibberish, which when you do tease one apart it turns out to be nonsense. But this is very clear. I think it’s a prank.)
