I cannot turn on the radio, the television etc. without being bombarded by an unceasing barrage of hyper-alarmism – on supplementary steroids. The news is full of it, but even regular programming carries the subliminal messaging in its story-lines, or its ‘misinformation’ dressed up as [a modelled] scientific fact.

And on and on and on and on it goes. Probably the most frequently used prefixes and suffixes to any sentence now are those two words… climate change.

But – and lets be fair here – it really is a hard sell to the British public who are suffering another one of the MO’s barbecue summers. They tried to frighten us and in my judgement they failed – dismally.

The nature of records is for them to be set and broken. We see this in sports all of the time. It’s basically a manifestation of counting. We get to x, but there is always x + 1….

In a warming trend, one would expect high temperature trends to be challenged. One should even expect it in a non-warming trend. It is not proof. To believe so, one is mistaken.

What is ridiculous is the fear mongering that a 1C change over a century will cause everything to collapse, especially when the “record” does not include the 99.999+% of earth’s existence prior to the invention of thermometers.

You’re saying this was the hottest June on record since 1884. My point still stands – 140 years is pretty meaningless to determine any real trends over 10,000+ years, and that’s just the Holocene.

But also – where were the stations in 1884? How many in Alaska? Siberia? South America? Africa? How can you possibly compare “global average” from 1884 to “global average” from today given the disparity in recording stations?

Even so, does it provide evidence for or against the scientific projections?

The UK record was largely down to Scotland, and in particularly North West Scotland the average temperature for the month is 14.5C, with the previous highest average being 13.4C. Things have gone back to normal now, cold and damp. In Derby, very much like last year, we had a couple of warmish days in June.

If you ignore Pope Gregory XIII’s man made division of the year the early summer 1976 is still the warmest in the UK. Meteorological summer will always begin on 1 June; ending on 31 August.

I guess you’re too young to remember the Met Office “Barbecue Summer” predictions, I think that they’ve given up on those after a run of failures only surpassed by StJohnstone FC’s failure to become Scottish League Champions (139 years and still counting)

“This June was the warmest June on record in the UK.”

*****************

Well TFN, the fossil record for Britain and continental Europe shows that they had to have been warmer in prehistoric times than today…..

Hippos Swam the Thames while Elephants and Rhinos Roamed Prehistoric Europe (ibtimes.co.uk)

“Elephants, rhinoceroses and aurochs (an extinct species of cattle) once roamed the forests of Europe, while hippopotamuses lived in the Thames and the Rhine, according to research.

Fossil evidence also suggests that macque monkeys lived in London, notably in Essex, around three quarters of a million years ago.”

TFN,

Are you suggesting that human CO2 emissions are driving us back to prehistoric levels of warmth?

My point is that today’s cooler climate does not support the claim that we humans are playing any meaningful role in climate change. We simply don’t know. I’m sorry, but your comment about June’s temperatures tends to lack significance when we know hippos were swimming in the Thames at one time and monkeys were living in Britain’s trees.

Science does not know how sensitive the climate is to the GHG effect of CO2 — especially considering the logarithmic saturation effect of GHGs. Nor does it know how much of the atmosphere’s CO2 is from us and how much is from Nature. It’s all speculation.

For me the issue with the “highest ever” global mean surface temperature is… what do you expect to happen?

Logically, global mean surface temperature can only ever do one of three things.
It can go up. It can go down. Or it can stay the same.
And in nature, nothing stays the same.

If the Thames isn’t freezing anymore then we can reasonably guess that global mean surface temperature is going up. So a new record would be expected. Even if mankind had never had an industrial revolution.

Not saying that we have had no effect; am saying that record global mean surface temperatures are not evidence of it nor of any need for mitigation (rather than adaptation).

Said this at the Bishop’s and I’m still chill.

. . . surface temperature can only ever do one of three things. It can go up. It can go down. Or it can stay the same. And in nature, nothing stays the same.

Too true.

And therein lies the rub with “average global temperature” constructs.

Every one of the hundreds, if not thousands, of unique climates in localities all over the world is constantly doing its own thing, subject to the numerous meteorological and geographic influences at play in each locality.

So to average spasmodically sampled inconsistent metrics from all these climates and then to purport that such a resultant number carries any applicability to real-world living conditions anywhere is really a nonsense.

In my opinion.

Logically, global mean surface temperature can only ever do one of three things. It can go up. It can go down. Or it can stay the same.

In what context?

Are you talking about monthy/annual fluctuations or are you talking about long-term trends?

The two things are not the same.

Of course there will be variability about annual temperatures, but that doesn’t explain the long term trends we are seeing.

Reply to  TheFinalNail
July 19, 2023 5:14 pm

Only atmospheric warming we are seeing is coming from EL Nino events…

… and in the surface data, from urban, aircraft and data manipulation.

Without all that urban, aircraft and tampering, current temperatures are probably about on par with the 1940s, and well below most of the last 10,000 years (even with urban, aircraft and tampering)

Reply to  TheFinalNail
July 19, 2023 11:58 pm

Of course there will be variability about annual temperatures, but that doesn’t explain the long term trends we are seeing.

Why not? Are you assuming that, in the long term, temperatures will be constant? Are you a denier of Ice Ages and the Eemian?

Do you believe that chaotic systems, like the atmosphere, will always return to the same strange attractor for cloud coverage? Do you think that the weather is not chaotic?

Is there some mechanism that counters natural temperature deviations but not CO2 emissions? What is it? And how does it tell the difference?
Do you pray to it? If not, why not?

Seriously, your case is flawed. And thus any policy aimed at controlling the temperature, rather than adapting to what happens, is doomed to fail. Unless you get very, very lucky.

Stop gambling with the planet!

If heat was actually being trapped by CO2, the entire planet would, logically, be getting ever warmer, all over the entire globe, progressively, year by year, all the time, everywhere, all at once.

Nothing like that is observed, so obviously heat is not trapped.

On windless nights with low humidity and no cloud cover, the same thing happens now that has always occurred: The temperature drops rapidly to the dew point, and when the dew point is very low, it very quickly gets very cold, and this radiational cooling bottoms out long before the Sun once again rises to begin a new cycle of diurnal heating and cooling.

IOW, CO2 does not control the temperature, water vapor and clouds do.
Just like always.
We have millions of detailed records of how fast the temperature drops at night, and we have along with this data, records of the amount of moisture in the air, the wind, and cloud cover, at those same places and at those same times.
We have such information from many thousands of locations, on many thousands of separate nights, for this sort of data.

For places at high latitudes above the Arctic and Antarctic Circles, these nights annually extend to several days, weeks, and months.

So where are the studies showing that on nights with identical conditions, it gets less cold than it used to, or even that it gets just as cold but takes longer?

Such studies do not exist, because this is not observed to be occurring.
It would be direct evidence that Warmistas are not completely full of crap and just plain wrong.

There is no global inexorable trend towards hotter weather, or more storms, or more or worse droughts, or worsening crop yields, or increased rates of sea level rise, or of global ocean acidification, or less polar sea ice or smaller ice sheets.

The truth is that the Earth was very much colder for several hundreds years than it was previously in the Holocene, particularly when compared to the warm periods that have occurred about every thousand years since the Holocene Climate Optimum, and we are all the very fortunate beneficiaries of the recovery from that disastrous period of time.
The Little Ice Age was the time of worse droughts, increased storminess, more frequent bouts of unseasonable weather, frequent crop failures and the resultant famines, wars, and disease outbreaks…

One thing that has not changed for as long as we have historical records, is that certain groups of people have always believed that the time they are/were living in, are the end times, that the end of the world is nigh, that doomsday is upon us, etc.

There is nothing new whatsoever about large numbers of people living in fear and panic due to a delusional certainty that the world is ending.

There is nothing new about people being in the thrall of religious cults that dictate to their weak-minded supplicants that they must repent for their sinful lives.

The living conditions of people around the world have been in a very long trend of increasing prosperity, longer lifespans, better health, and in general more prosperity and a better future.
And yet, it seems to be easier than ever for doomsday panic mongers to convince large numbers of people that the immediate future holds nothing but the promise and imminence of the actual death and destruction of everyone and everything, everywhere.

No one, anywhere on Earth, is living in a place that is objectively in a state of crisis due to weather or climatic conditions. It simply does not exist. The weather in every place on Earth has been, and is currently, well within normal historical parameters.

The ocean is exactly where it has always been on every beach in every place on Earth.

Crop yields and food production the world over, are at record levels and the trend towards more food, and more food per person, is actually accelerating.

Deaths due to weather related causes have declined by over 99.9% within a mere hundred years, and continue to drop.

Anyone, anywhere, can walk outside in any of these places that are supposedly roastingly hot, and they will see the grass is green, the trees are leafy, the sky is blue, clouds are white, birds sing, animals roam, rain falls wet, and everything is just like always, everywhere, very close to all the time.

Tourists flock to Death Valley to experience the thrill of a slightly hotter than normal desert valley in the hottest part of the hottest day of the hottest month of the year, clutching their water bottles.
People young and old, male and female, amateurs and professionals, prepare excitedly to head to the Badwater Basin this weekend for the annual Badwater Ultramarathon, where they will run through such places as Furnace Creek, RUN for 135 miles straight, day and night. Because all…ALL… any human needs to not just survive, but thrive and engage in days-long footraces, in the hottest place on Earth, at the hottest time of year, is some sneakers and some water. Most will also carry a few ounces of nylon clothing I suppose.

The decades-long mass migration in the US from more northerly locations continues apace, showing no signs at all of slowing. Millions a year vote with their feet and go where the Sun shines hot for almost all of the year.

Years-long droughts end in floods, and reservoirs refill almost overnight, just like always.

Several weeks from now, the Sun will set at the North pole, not to rise again for 6 months. By then, it will be snowing in the mountains, people will be ruing the brief Summer being over, jacket and coat weather will once again be a fact of life half the country, The sea ice will have stopped decreasing and begin to grow again, perpetuating for another year the vast frozen hellscape wasteland of the Arctic.
The mammoths buried in permafrost will continue to lay where they fell all those thousands of years ago, entombed in ice right where they fell and died with green grass still in their mouths. The miles high ice pile covering most of Greenland will get a few feet thicker, just like has long been the case.

What is it about us, what is it about human beings, that allow us to be smart enough to build machines to fly through the air hundreds at a time, to travel to the Moon and get home in one piece, to conquer diseases that have existed for millions of years, to make some squiggles on paper and thereby deduce that Energy equals mass multiplied by the speed of light, squared, to MEASURE the speed of light, deduce the nature and structure of things so small no one will ever be able to actually see them…to all of these things, and so much more, like figuring out how to make it so one person can grow enough food for a city full of people without breaking a sweat…and yet are so stupid, that a bunch of liars can convince people who have nothing to worry about of any greater consequence than whether to have steak or chicken tonight, that they need to glue themselves to a highway in order to prevent the world from ending in a few years?

Why are people so easy to dupe, that they will ignore literally everything that their eyes and their sense tell them, and believe, without a single shred of evidence, in a complete fantasy version of reality, told by people who have never been correct in their entire lives about a single thing they have predicted?

How can people who hate cold weather, and will work all year to travel to the hottest place they can afford to go for a few short days and nights, who have for every day of their lives experienced the temp fluctuating by several tens of degrees, and every year they have existed, shrugged off as barely even inconvenient, annual temperature swings over 100 degrees, also believe uncritically that if the weather gets a few tenths of a degree warmer, it is going to be the end of the world?

What the Hell is wrong with people?

This current lunatic propaganda barrage, for me centered in CNN, pushing the idea of a death spiral into thermal armageddon on earth, encouraging the eco-loonies to engage in outrageous acts of vandalism and sabotage, has reached a point where even low-information observers are wondering. CNN has labelled 116 deg F in Phoenix, Arizona, as evidence, but I worked on the north outskirts of Phoenix at 116 deg F, in 1985. CNN also labelled 126 deg F in Death Valley as further evidence, but I crossed Death Valley in 1990 at 126 deg F (big mistake, saved only by emergency cold survival liquids in cooler). The currently hyped events actually have an old name: SUMMER!

I lived in Phoenix in 1981. I would go out in the morning to jog, before the sunrise, as it was the coolest then … usually around 85°F. After work I would open my car windows and let the heat escape prior to the drive home. I placed a thermometer inside and it would regularly rise to 156-158 inside the car in summer by 3:30pm. 115 – 122 was not unheard of in 1981

You should really consider the psychological basis for the choices of words, colors, pictures, etc., that propagandists use to construct and support their narratives. Inverness, Scotland The highest temperature ever recorded was 29.7 °C (85.5 °F) in July 2006 and June 2018. Ullapool, Ross and Cromarty highest recorded temperature in July has been 28°C (82°F). Aberdeen, Scotland 30C (86 °F) an all-time high in August 1975

The average July temperature in Inverness is 19°C, so that should mean temperatures between 15°C and 23°C could be regarded as normal. So 29°C would be two shades of red above the green of normal.
I’ve been in Aviemore in April with temperatures of 25°C, it was very pleasant hardly deadly though, or should that have been in black because of the time of year?

Right, so on the usual colour-coded chart this range would be whitish, with pure white representing 19°C and fading gently blue or red, depending on the direction of difference from 19°C. Where are you getting green from?

Less than two years after the 1998 el nino, we had a month where the average temp of the entire troposphere was the very coldest it has been in the past 30+ years.
Whatever happened, it is not cumulative, and it is not a step- change.

The US is most of an entire continent, bounded by two separate huge oceans that are the source regions for a majority of the air masses that pass over the country, with everything from huge, entire-country-sized lakes, tall mountain ranges, deserts, uplands, lowlands, rainforests, and deserts.
There are well kept and detailed temperature records from a vast multitude of closely spaced weather stations blanketing the country, with records going back over 140 years.
It is the only such place on the planet.

And what we see is, no recent warming trends, no step changes, no cumulative trapping of heat. Nothing of the sort is happening, in the one large land area where we have records good enough to show small long-term changes.
Kind of an amazing co-incidence, is it not?

The truth is, almost all of the “official” records have been altered, infilled, adjustamacated, made up, homogenized, pasteurized, bastardized, and Climate Gated.

Prior to the advent of the era of government sponsored global warming alarmism, both the instrument records, and the historical evidence from numerous sources of direct information, were all very consistent with each other. No one altered records, or doctored them, and no one claimed there was any systematic errors or fabrications on a large scale or a long term.

But all that is out the window now, and the official instrumental records have been subjected to numerous fraudulent revisions.
What they are feeding us today is just a carefully detailed package of lies, that are completely at odds with what every source was reporting at the time, and 100% incompatible with eyewitness accounts, photographic evidence, and pretty much every single textbook, news item, research paper, etc, that existed prior to about 1990.

I had to read the source to figure out they were talking about the surface, not AIR temperatures. Guess what? We’ve known since asphalt was invented that it can get 40-60 degrees hotter than the air. This is what the religion does to people. Instead of debating the issue, they try and find something about the person that doesn’t work for them (of course, repeating any manner of rumor, etc) and then they turn the debate in that direction.

It’s usually, “they received some payment for something they did for some company that had something to do with energy,” as if mining for grant money from the government is somehow pure. But they’ll take anything.

Of course, Simon won’t dare debate the issue here. None of them ever do. It would be like a life-long Christian trying to keep an open mind that maybe, just maybe, resurrection is impossible, no one has ever lived for 700 years and the dinosaur fossils were not fabricated by mischievous fortune hunters.

You mean like Hunter Biden?

At least you got the “wacko” Christian stuff right.

Simon is basically incapable of debating any issue…

… especially related to science or reality. !

It is as if he KNOWS everything in the video is true and correct,

.. so turns to attempting some petty sliming…. and fails yet again.

Says Simon, who ranks about -100 on the credibility index.

Irony !

Notice that you cannot actually argue against one thing he said. !

Why is that ?

Says the man at 101. And ….I don’t claim to be an expert on climate. But I will tell you one thing…. I know the recent warming isn’t caused by ENSO.

I’ll take 101 to your negative 100.

Thanks.. 🙂

You are totally clueless as to what is causing this little bit of warming.

Just as you are totally clueless about everything else.

Look at the ocean charts, simple one…. there is an El Nino.

What you really meant to say is that it certainly isn’t CO2 is , right !

Noted again… your attempted petty distraction from countering anything in the video. 😉

Call me crazy, but I’ll not waste my time on a video where a gossip columnist and an archeologist try to offer their opinions. I’d rather listen to those who study the stuff for a job. You want to try it rather than just yelling “it’s not true.”

We know that you have zero intention of facing reality.

That is just who you are. !

Waiting for you to produce evidence.. of anything !!

Yawn!!!! Ok let me ask you. What would it take to convince you that man made CO2 is warming the climate? Don’t say evidence, I’m wondering what level of evidence? Serious question.

“Don’t say evidence, “

That’s ok , because I know you haven’t got any !

You have no idea what “scientific evidence” is, do you.

Why aren’t you actually posting some evidence instead of blathering ??

Come on…….. produce real scientific evidence that enhanced atmospheric CO2 causes warming.

Here is your chance… don’t fail utterly and completely… yet again.

No ducking and weaving

No empty rhetoric

No mantra BS.

No unvalidated assumption driven models..

Actual scientific evidence.

But do you even know what that is.?

Ducking and slithering, is no excuse.

Not wanting to know… wanting to remain ignorant… is no excuse.

But that is who you are.

There’s good money in scaring children and fabricating crisis. Lots of people whose only response is telling us we have to prove their negative. That’s why it’s so obviously a religion.

Don’t you ever just go outside and realize that there are always small changes in the climate and you’re not going to die if it’s 82 on a summer day rather than 81? Or that all the predictions of doom just aren’t coming true? Or that CO2 levels were ten times higher at times in the past and they don’t seem to drive the climate anyway?

No one’s yelling “it’s not true.” You’re the Mayans with their calendar of doom yelling all the time. You just keep changing the dates like they did. Eventually, they just went away. But the world didn’t.

Wake up. We’re not that important. There’s no emergency. Get outside, wear some sunscreen in the summer. Enjoy a nice day at the beach. You’re not going to die.

I realise that small changes matter…..

“I realise that small changes matter…..”

You realise NOTHING.

Realise means REALITY… you don’t even know what that is.

Fact is , that you wouldn’t have a clue if it was 81F or 82F without a thermometer.

Even with a thermometer, you would probably be incapable of reading it to tell any difference anyway.

How exactly do small changes matter?
What was the consequence of this supposed “hottest month ever?”
What and who died?
What specific locations set new all-time high temperature records?
Those records were all set many years ago, so how was it so hot way back then?
How many recent months have close to the record?
Is it over, or is it ongoing?

Describe any one single dire consequence of this calamity, please!
Which crops withered and died?
Where are birds and animals falling dead from levels of heat they have never experienced before?
Why is it so localized?
One place having one month, IN SUMMER, in which it was hot, is evidence of what exactly, considering the far larger areas all around the world where nothing of the sort is or has occurred?

And, of course, an archaeologist would have many magnitudes more understanding of historical climate and the Earth in general…

… than a clueless clown who’s simplistic intent is to remain blatantly ignorant on such matters.

That has some truth, but his skill would not match those whose specific focus is climate change… and yet you want to ignore those people. Why is that?

Noted again, that you are incapable of putting forward anything in the way of science.

Just mindless blather, while you continue to slither and squirm trying to avoid having to produce what you KNOW you don’t have.

I look at the science… YOU HAVE NONE. You keep proving that.

And btw, most self-named “climate scientists” are little more than self-glorified computer game programmers.

Basically every one of them has been wrong on every bit of science and ever “projection/prediction” they that have ever made.

They have as little credibility as you do.

Present the scientific evidence… or just keep blethering.

You have no case..

You keep proving that.

Absolutely nothing to back up your little childish imaginings.

You really don’t like being LAUGHED at, do you, poor little amoeba-brain.

No wonder everyone refers to you as “simpleton”.

Again, we note, not even a failed attempt at any actual science.
