Guardian: Climate Activists can Overcome Greed by Shouting Louder

Essay by Eric Worrall

“… If the law and the facts are against you, pound the table and yell like hell”?

As heat records break, the climate movement has the right answers – but the words are all wrong

Jonathan Freedland

The fossil fuel industry has spent billions on winning over the public. Green activists must learn from its tactics

It’s happening all over – biblical downpours in New York state, unquenchable fires in Canada – and yet humanity is not acting as if it is confronting a planetary emergency. Extreme weather is fast becoming the norm in the US, and yet Americans tell pollsters it is a low priority, ranking it 17th out of 21 national issues in a recent Pew survey. Even when the impact is personal, as it was for many Australians when bushfires raged through the country in 2019, opinions prove stubbornly hard to shift: one study found that among those “directly impacted” by the fires, around a third saw no connection to the climate. They were “unmoved.”

How can this be? How can we, like Nero, fiddle while the Earth burns? …

This specific problem, like the climate crisis itself, is made by human beings – which is simultaneously enraging and encouraging. Enraging, because it is born of a greed that puts gargantuan profit ahead of a habitable planet. Encouraging, because most problems made by human beings can be fixed by them. Enter the climate movement – the scientists, the activists, the campaigners who have done so much for so long to combat this threat. Except, it turns out, they are part of the problem too.

The trouble is, they have not been communicating the threat loudly enough or in the right way. …

Yet “climate change” doesn’t work either. Mere “change” is too gentle: it doesn’t indicate whether the change will be negative or positive. It is not immediate: it hints that its consequences will be felt only in the future, when we are feeling them right now. Which is why this newspaper is right to speak of a climate crisis or emergency.

“If the facts are against you, argue the law. If the law is against you, argue the facts. If the law and the facts are against you, pound the table and yell like hell”  ― Carl Sandburg

Jonathan, please stop wasting our time. At least try to be original.

Climate activists have already tried changing the words multiple times, and have failed utterly.

In the wake of all the mistruths told during the height of the Covid outbreak, the blatant manipulations, abuses of power, and panic mongering, a growing number of people just don’t believe wild claims of imminent catastrophe anymore, no matter what spin you put on it.

More often than not, the JSO protesters in the UK are wearing sweaters, jackets, scarves, at least long sleeve shirts, and sometimes even gloves in “summer.” It would seem a little warming might reduce their clothing budget.

“Climate Acceptance”
Accept that Climate Changes
Accept that Global Temperatures Change … Up and Down
Accept that CO2 also has Positive Climate Attributes
Accept that CO2 = Life

There you go!

I just found out the Climate Czar, John Kerry, has a budget of about $15 million and has 45 people working under him! And Congress didn’t know anything about it! And here Kerry is representing all of us on climate change.

The traitor, Joe Biden, hires another traitor, John Kerry, to work for him. Birds of a feather, flock together. And both of them are focused on destroying the United States using the climate change scam as their device.

A few months ago I was watching a documentary on dinosaurs being found in Canada. One young paleontologist declared that the reason we needed to study the dinosaurs was to figure out how they survived climate changes. He also proclaimed that the reason why this was more important than ever was because the current rate of extinction was approaching the rate that occurred at the KT boundary.

Yes, he really did compare our current rate of a few hundred species over 100 years, to losing over 75% of all species on the planet.

Not before I commented (as I am a British lefty Guardianista)

In every survey on people’s policy priorities climate change comes very near the bottom.

It’s not the language describing climate change that has made that so. It’s not the name of climate change. Nor is it a mind controlling conspiracy by a secretive elite who want to spread doubt in order to heat the planet (even though lizard people need a warmer planet).

It’s just not so.

Climate change comes very near the bottom of people’s priorities because they do know about it.

And they know it isn’t as critical as the risk of losing your job or having your savings inflated away or the daily hassle of poor roads or the lack of childcare or the collapse of the NHS or…

Open your mind and hearts to other people’s needs. And understand that your fears are not that important.

Interestingly, that comment has not been universally derided by my fellow lefty Guardianistas. In fact it has more than a dozen up votes.

Because they don’t understand the import of what you said. They misunderstood that your last sentence wasn’t directed at people with normal concerns but that it was directed at their fear of climate change. It comes from being so sure of oneself that any contrary information is skimmed through, with an interpretation of it supporting your belief system.

You have interpreted my comment as I intended, But I think (and I hope) you are wrong about how my fellow Guardianistas have interpreted it.

The first half of my comment criticised the premise of the article. It stated that people do know about climate change. Half my comment sets up my plea for humility.

Surely some people read from start to finish, and not just skip to the end?

The fossil fuel industry did very little to fight the green blob. In fact, big oil and gas seemed quite clean content to sit back and watch as coal was plants were converted to gas and coal mining companies went bankrupt. Oil and gas producers certainly know that there is no danger of being replaced by renewables in the foreseeable future.

Somewhere in the back offices, they realize they can raise prices of their commodity while possibly spending fewer exploration dollars against known field decline rates…if green whiners succeed in a few % demand reduction.….What’s not to like about less cost for more profit, and the rather obvious occurrence in a decade or so where governments plead for them to “drill-baby-drill”…

“The fossil fuel industry has spent billions on winning over the public. Green activists must learn from its tactics”

This quote is simply to easy to disprove: The most important thing in science is the word and question why … why doesn´t Extinction Rebellion, Letze Generation and the Just Stop Oil movement asks themself, who funds them, the list is long … Why does these “donors” fund them. This, the second question is propably over the top because it requires a little bit of disciplin in critical thinking. The first one on the other hand, will prove that the Green activists can´t learn a tactic they already are a part off.

Jonathan Freedlands quote is rubbish … talk about basic psycholgy, the false flag he presents falls back on the question why … his quote is based on what, when and how therefore it´s useless … !!

Part of the left wing belief system requires one to believe that pre-industrial humans were pure and pristine. They only became evil once they started gathering in cities and invented capitalism.

As such they find it impossible to believe that indigenous peoples would do something so destructive as deliberately setting fire to the land.

One young socialist assured me that the tomahawk was actually a farming implement and the natives didn’t even know it could be used to hurt other humans into the Europeans showed them how. Beyond that, they had no need to use it as a weapon of war, because the natives were completely peaceful and would never hurt one another.

The places where media access is the most well-developed are also the places where misinformed opinions about “climate change” are most bizarre. These very same places are also where technology has enabled the most sophisticated forms of personal environment, ie. HVAC. Most of the inhabitants of modern, Western cities live and work within structures with a command personal climate maintained within a small window of acceptable temperature and humidity. Going outside at some times in the summer impresses them as being unbearably hot. This was not the case just a few years ago when AC wasn’t a feature of residential housing and people simply acknowledged that occasionally summer would be uncomfortable.

In other, less technologically advanced areas of the world, the people are familiar with summer heat, rivers rising over their banks and intermittent droughts. They’re not outraged by those situations. The few who do express concern are those who are educated members of international NGOs who have little in common with everymen of the countries they supposedly represent. Climate change panic is a phenomenon limited to the affluent west and the elites of the undeveloped world.

“one study found that among those “directly impacted” by the fires, around a third saw no connection to the climate.”

These are rational folk who live on the land and under the weather. They’ve experienced fires, droughts, heat waves, floods, unusually hot and unusually cold weather. They’ve heard the stories from their parents, grandparents who heard stories from their predecessors…

I was born in the late 1930s, and I heard my family and friends’ families talk about the Dirty Thirties heat, drought, “riding the rods”, hunger, … for 20 years. It was the most significant thing in their lives. That, folks was the 20th century temperature high stand that we haven’t surpassed. I can assure you we would all have noticed if we came near to something like that!

Individual state and province records still stand. When the super el Niño of 1998 occurred, it didn’t come near breaking records of ’30s and early ’40s. Indeed, it wasn’t until 2007, on the eve of the retirement of the Father of Global Warming that GISS pushed the 20th century high stand down a degree, and in that stroke, abolished the weather disaster of the century, and with it that forty years of deep cooling that followed. Actually, much of the warm spell of the 80s and 90s was simply recovery from the “Ice Age Cometh” cold period (that everyone ls noticed).

“Heatwaves, record warm temperatures… Do you really believe this is all being made up?”

I believe it is just normal, Earth weather. Record warm temperatures? Where? I hear the meteorologists say there is a potential to break some temperature records in the western U.S. They haven’t been broken yet.

And what if they were. Exceeded by one degree? This is a catastrophe?

What we really have going on is an over-hyping of the weather by people who have a climate change agenda.

The reason the climate change promoters are over-hyping the weather, is because they have no evidence that CO2 is doing what they claim it is doing to the Earth’s atmosphere, so they pretend that normal weather is abnormal and is being caused by human-derived CO2, with no evidence to back up this claim whatsoever, so they hope and pray for a climate record to happen so they will have something to talk about.

And keep in mind that these temperature records only go back for a couple of hundred years, and we have no idea what happened with the weather before that time.

Hyping normal Earth weather as being unprecedented is the last refuge of the climate change alarmist scoundrels.

Enter the climate movement – the scientists, the activists, the campaigners who have done so much for so long to combat this threat. Except, it turns out, they are part of the problem too.

The trouble is, they have not been communicating the threat loudly enough or in the right way. …

I recently almost glued my fingers together using super glue trying to fix something. I didn’t yell and scream and demand attention and that no one else can be heard.
I don’t know how old you are but I’m old enough to have seen all these weather events before. (I’ve lived through some of them.)
And I’ve looked into a few bits of history regarding weather events.
Nothing new. It’s happened before.
I’ve also happen to have the list of record Highs an Lows for my little spot on the globe captured over a number of years. Amazing how a record High for a date in 2012 is lower than the record High for that same date in 2007.
(Did I just “pound a table” by pointing that out?)

Which one is you, FN ?

Talk about self-mockery.. making a total goose of yourself… childish petulance…pounding the table etc etc..

These are the people YOU support !

I’m still waiting for someone to come up some actual science that proves that global warming is a problem worth worrying abouit.

Computer models, especially ones that can’t replicate past climates, are not science.

We are waiting for your evidence.

So far, you are empty, devoid, with nothing.

You have presented absolutely nothing that hasn’t been baseless, non-science mantra.

It would help if the information provided by UN IPCC CliSciFi climate models was accurate.

A hypothesis, to be scientifically valid must be falsifiable; it must put forward a prediction that may be answered with only “yes or no” based on experimentation. The vast majority of climate models are programmed to reflect the hypothesis from climate scientists that there must be tropospheric hot spots to conform to the fundamental underpinnings of climate science that CO2 warming is amplified by water vapor in the troposphere. Thus, in that limited sense they are falsifiable.

Well, the experiments to test that hypothesis have been conducted every day for decades by weather balloons and satellites and it always turns out that there are no hot spots. The result is that the hypothesis of tropospheric hot spots based on the fundamentals of climate science has been falsified by experimentation. Accordingly, all of the elements of climate models that generate hot spots within the models must be removed to be consistent with the scientific method. Until such time as they are modified they have been and will remain nothing but mental masturbation costing billions of dollars that has been allowed to pervert climate science from the beginning.

That’s correct.

Unfortunately, the climate change alarmists don’t remove their bogus climate change models, they double down on them. Their hypothesis is falsified, but they keep right on going. Real scientists should be appalled.

Well this is OT, but I have to say it.

I foresee a huge “I told you so” coming. The fact that Ukraine has lost their war is becoming ever more evident. Their offensive was a disaster and now the very countries that promised to back them and their entrance into NATO are turning their backs on them. In the near future the evidence to back that fact will soon reach such a critical mass that all the Kings horses and men cannot hide it.

The ONLY people that have gained from that war are the Merchants of Death that make the weapons and the politicians that are on their payroll. The American tax payer has been robbed, our military ordinance stores raided, and massive numbers of Ukrainians and Russians have died or are suffering. Russia and China’s standing in the world will be increased and NATO’s standing diminished.

And all of that for WHAT?

The Ukranian offensive has been a disaster. It has gained virtually nothing and its spearhead is now broken.  They have lost!

The Russians now have 10x the artillery the Ukrainians have. They have 5x the number of tanks and APVs. The Patriot systems cannot possibly deal with the swarms of drones the Russians are deploying.

Russia will win. I have said that from the beginning. Not because that is the result I want but because my military judgement was from the beginning that Ukraine simply did not have the ability to win even with NATO backing. They simply do not have the manpower and one cannot build an effective combined arms force on the fly in the short time they have tried to do so. Having weapons is one thing. Knowing how to use them most effectively to achieve one’s objectives is quite another thing altogether.

Have any of you sis-boom-bah types that jumped so hard on the fabricated back Ukraine wave to protect Europe and democracy learned anything from this? You freely embraced the narratives about the war of the very governments and press outlets that you denigrate and dispute when they fabricate and broadcast the climate change lies.

I was needled because I refused to support that crap. This former SF soldier that spent over a decade on hazardous duty during the “cold war” in 10th SFG (A) specifically targeted against the Soviets whose loyalty was questioned as if I was supporting Russia because I would not support Ukraine.

This war was unnecessary! And the American people have been lied to by their government and their press about the reasons for it and their reporting on who is winning. And now, the time is coming when the truth about what has actually been happening on the battlefield is going to come out.

It needed saying. A negotiated settlement back in 2014 may well have avoided the carnage inflicted on the Donbas by Ukraine shelling as well as the wanton destruction inflicted on Ukraine by the Russian Invasion. The Biden regime will just walk away, patting their wallets.

The nut jobs actually seem to believe that history started in 1979.
Every single one of these so called crisis have happened before and usually there are historical instances that were significantly worse that the recent examples that have their panties in such wads.

“Climate Scorchio”

From the article: “The fossil fuel industry has spent billions on winning over the public.”

Another unsubstantiated claim by climate change alarmists.

“It’s happening all over – biblical downpours in New York state, unquenchable fires in Canada – and yet humanity is not acting as if it is confronting a planetary emergency.”

That would be because there is no planet emergency. It’s just weather. It happens every year, and has happened since the beginning of time.

“Extreme weather is fast becoming the norm in the US,”

Wrong! That’s just your uneducated opinion. It’s just weather, which climate change alarmists blow all out of proportion because it is the only argument they can make, but unfortunately for them, there is zero evidence that humans are causing the weather to be worse that it was in the past. There is no unprecedented weather happening. Only in the fevered imaginations of climate change alarmists.

“The trouble is, they (the activists) have not been communicating the threat loudly enough or in the right way. …”

The trouble for you is people live their lives in the real world, where the weather they see has happened in the past and is no big deal. They don’t wring their hands over a thunderstorm.

“Yet “climate change” doesn’t work either. Mere “change” is too gentle: it doesn’t indicate whether the change will be negative or positive.”

Now the author is attacking the term “climate change”! It’s not scary-sounding enough for him! He should feel free to give it any catastrophic name he can think of. All his fellow climate alarmists do it.

It doesn’t change the fact that the weather we are experiencing today is the same kind of weather we have experienced in the past. When the climate change alarmists talk about possibly setting new temperature records, they are telling you that in the past the temperatures were just as warm as today and we have a ways to go to exceed those numbers.

In the past, some humans used to think that witches caused bad weather. They swore up and down that they did. They even executed people for being witches. Do witches cause bad weather?

Climate Change Alarmists are the new Witch Hunters.

“…and yet humanity is not acting as if it is confronting a planetary emergency.”
That’s because it is not.

Show us the data that indicates wild fires, or any other extreme weather “calamity”, never occurred prior to 1850 in either frequency or intensity.
