Granholm has a better chance of relying on unicorn cavalry.

Someone needs to remind Ms. Granholm that the U.S.A. HAD energy security less than 3 years ago. The U.S. was a net exporter of reliable, positive EROEI/ROI, energy (petroleum).

Correction for article title: … Climate Change

@ WUWT: Stop promoting the lie about human CO2 by giving legitimacy to the propaganda term: “climate change.”

100% agree – by using THEIR terms, you accept it has merit ( when it has precisely zero). I am very tired of hearing and reading the oxygen of tacit acceptance that AGW/CC has ANY legitimacy (aside from “sustainability”, however that may be defined – as a concept fairly unarguable ?) – articles/videos/TV discussions and articles increasingly start by the writer or presenter trying to dissect the particular “policy remedy” or stated reason or data that its proponents use. There is one simple question that needs to be put – for the AGW/CC delusionist to answer – is “Why are “you” denominating a substance, without which all life on this planet requires, is a pollutant?”

This puts these non humans on notice that their belief has zero credibility, zero basis in fact or science, proven by researching data from millions and millions of years of life on this planet being sustained by the combined effects of Sun, water and food as synthesised with the essential contribution of…..CO2 – the Givers Of Life ( no disrespect for those of any faith that uses that phrase in another context ). Let these Bustards squirm as they fire salvo after salvo into their malign “feet” – ask the question, shut up, let them condemn themselves in their own words but do not allow them to stray off the point because they have no answer; that way the oxygen of publicity will fully expose them as ignorant, brainwashed, anti human CO2 deniers, zealots who clearly inhabitant a “Wayward Pines” existence that is completely devoid of any worth.
A plague on the houses of all those who do not push back very very hard on this horror fantasy.

and you can add – why do you think that removing CO2 from man’s industrial and transportation activities which amounts to something like 1 one hundredth of 1 % of the atmosphere will have any appreciable effect on the earth’s weather o its climate

the other absurd term which needs to be changed is referring to the energy cramdown as an energy transition – as WUWT reports even government agencies conclude that the percentage of energy created from so called renewal sources, aka intermittent, unreliable sources in 2050 isn’t much different from what it is today – so there is no transition

I agree. Using the grossly inaccurate term “energy transition” only helps the CO2 scammers by implying that this chimerical event is inevitable.

Commented previously on this idiocy. Or, as Senator Joni Ernst said, that is no way to fight a war.

To repeat, Biden thinking an electrified military viable can be excused as another manifestation of senile dementia. Energy Sec Granholm has no such excuse; she exemplifies the really dumb blonde.

No, she is a Leftist ideologue slavishly following the UN and Democrat Party anti-capitalist, Marxist narratives.

The crony capitalist profiteers and race hustlers will get the huge infusion of borrowed and printed monies from the latest hundreds of billions of dollars from Brandon’s Federal largesse handouts courtesy of a past Democrat Party-controlled Congress. In a few years most of that money will have been wasted and/or a Republican House will deny appropriations related to funding those programs. This is their last hurrah and the American public won’t allow that sort of wasteful spending again.

will be interesting to read how they intend to power the Navy ships…if my history is correct, Columbus sailed a Green Fleet to the New World…
Wonder where they will position the charging stations for a submarine?
How long will an Aircraft Carrier need to Plug In to recharge?
Oh, where will that carrier get the power to recharge those 60+ aircraft staged on the ship?

Reply to  Deacon
April 30, 2023 4:55 pm

Well… subs and carriers are already nuclear powered, so… green. Hypersonic nuclear missiles have been demoed by both China and Russia, US not far behind, though adapting same to fighter aircraft might be a challenge. Probably wouldn’t work at all in a tank, but perhaps an SMR? Nasty when they get blown up on the battlefield, but hey, peace through superior green firepower!

but Nuclear is not Green…isn’t that why Germany shut down their nuclear power plants…Where is there any Greenie promoting the building and operation of more nuclear power plants??
those subs and carriers will have to go…along with the diesel boats.
Anyone with any realistic sense would be pushing nuclear for most all electric power. it is far better than petro/natural gas…only hydro dams can claim to be greener…and those won’t ever be allowed again…based on the possible disruption of a toad/lizard/mouse/bird habitat.

Sadly Germany shut down their nuclear reactors because they were worried about a tsunami wiping them out. 🙄🤦‍♂️

It appears that future wars are expected to be fought on US soil if ‘energy security’ relies on home-grown power systems (or very long extension cords).

They must be ignoring all advice from the military on how to fight and have no concept of the energy needs of weapon systems

Far too many of the current warfare planners only have experience in the deserts of the Middle East. None have any apparent experience in fighting in a quagmire like Vietnam or even today’s Ukranian spring and fall. Where there is no electric infrastructure (look at eastern Ukraine) exactly how are battle and support vehicles supposed to recharge? Mobile diesel generators? How do those generators get to where they are needed when it’s too muddy to even travel on the dirt roads let alone in the fields? How many battle and support vehicles will need to be pulled off the line in order to recharge during a battle? What do you do during extended periods of cold weather with little wind and no sun for literally weeks (look at Europe during WWII).

It is truly scary when high level politicians have the military so screwed up that they can’t even foresee (or are too scared to speak up) all the problems that a “green” military are going to have.

As for fighting on US soil, how long do you suppose it would take to completely knock out our electric grid? My estimate is 24 hours. There wouldn’t even have to be an invasion to bring us to surrender!

April 30, 2023 6:33 pm

From Bing Chat: I asked why the CO2 trend didn’t change during the COVID Shutdown.

That’s a good question. According to some studies, the COVID-19 lockdowns caused a record drop in carbon emissions for 202012, with an estimated cut of between 4.2% and 7.5%3. However, this was not enough to lower the atmospheric concentration of CO2, which is what matters for the climate crisis.

What a load of horse manure.
Just think for a minute if the US goes ahead with this nonsense and they are fighting a ground war as is happening in the Ukraine.
What is the first action that the enemy take against you ?
They will destroy your fuel supply .
Power stations and transmission lines are very easy to locate and destroy so that tanks and armored vehicles with dead batteries are useless .
Where as fuel depots can be hidden and kept behind the front lines with the fighting units being refueled as required.
When you have clowns like this in charge you certainly don’t need enemies.
Just leave all the battery dead tanks behind just like they left all the military hardware behind did in Afghanistan.

There may be a trick in it. If we leave the enemy these useless electric vehicles, they can’t use them against us.

April 30, 2023 7:06 pm

I spent over 40 years working in the “military-industrial” complex. T completely recapitalize the entire DoD vehicle inventory will take a lot of money and a lot of time. Let’s assume that a miracle occurs, and the money is made available. Using the DoD acquisition process, we can’t turn out a new (from the ground up) airplane or ship in less than 7 – 10 years. Even if another miracle occurs, and the acquisition process is seriously streamilned, the technologies necessary just aren’t there, except to magical thinkers who are sure that we can do it.

Patrick Moore: “It’s called the Pleistocene Ice Age. We have been in it for 2.6 million years.”

And climate scientists have no clue as to why we entered this ice age, and why we have 100,000 year ice cycles with 10,000-20,000 years of warmth during each cycle. Claiming it’s CO2 is nonsense.

Granholm is selling this on the climate-green view. A quick google of
*us electrified military vehicles* brings up a different angle.

https://www.defensenews.com/industry/techwatch/2022/10/11/heres-what-industry-is-offering-to-meet-armys-electric-vehicle-needs/

Nothing much there about climate, it all so called lethal effectiveness.

My take is that after covid and the marriage of big pharma with big government
and the total control and take over of big tech and big media by said groups
we have slipped very deep into fascism, the combination of big business, in this
case MIC and big government. The climate side is ruse…

The existential crisis is not CO2, nor global warming etc. The existential crisis is how pervasively stupid and unable to grasp the most basic concepts of reality that has infected the minds of the general public!

Both diesel and jet fuel have 15-20 times more energy density per kilogram as do the best batteries now after allowing for engine efficiency (~60% of the energy content of the fuel is waste heat not mechanical energy which is already accounted for in the 15-20 times). Let’s do some back of the envelope arithmetic on the feasibility of electrifying the military’s vehicles:

M1 Abrams tank – fuel capacity 500 gallons, 3,350 lbs fuel. Range off road 125 miles. Time to refuel = 10 minutes.
RANGE WITH 3,350 LBS OF BATTERIES = 8.3 MILES (125/15) TIME TO REFUEL = 5 HOURS FAST CHARGE, 30 HOURS SOLAR.

Combat helicopter – AH-64 Apache – fuel capacity 230 gallons, 1,540 lbs, Combat Range 300 miles. Time to refuel 10 minutes.
RANGE WITH 1,540 LBS OF BATTERIES = 15 MILES (300/20) TIME TO REFUEL = 5 HOURS FAST CHARGE, 30 HOURS SOLAR.

We don’t even need to consider fighters or bombers as those would be completely made of unobtainium regards the power density required for their thrust when considering electrification. But the Apache has 2 engines each delivering 1,265 kW (1,687 HP) of shaft power. The Abrams has a single 1,500 HP (1,125 kW) engine. F16 has a single engine which at 600 miles per hour delivers 40,000 HP (30,000 kW)

The latest and greatest electric motor designed for some foolish hybrid airliner use by Siemens I believe is a 1 MW electric motor to drive a ducted fan. That isn’t even enough to power the tank or two of them powering the Apache (a MW is 1,000 kW). It certainly isn’t enough to power a fighter jet or an airliner or military cargo plane.

Anyone who believes you can electrify the military is crazier than Jim Jones and is in fact ignorantly suicidal. (or perhaps deliberately suicidal in terms of our society)

Rod Evans

You seriously have to doubt the capacity of your command and control staff, if they are dumb enough to go public with ” We can fully electrify our military by 2030″
Now that is seriously scary to hear.

Granholm is a very[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKux363Dg64&w=1271&h=715%5Dwho would be a viable candidate for US president except for the fact that she was born in Canada. During the Trump regime she was kept in storage at Cal Bezerkley until it was safe for Dems to re-emerge. This is indicative of the close relationship between academia and left-wing pseudo-science.

Middle of the North African Sahara desert fighting a vicious tank battle. Tank Commander to Logistic Support “Urgent – only maximum one hour left of charge; can you send a few Jerry Cans of electricity as soon as……” Logistic to Tank Commander “sorry out of Jerry Cans”!!! Tank Commander to Driver “pull into the next battery charging station you spot, I will put it on my credit card and reclaim later”.

Tank Commander to Air Support HQ – “need immediate air support as under heavy attack”. LogSup to TC “Roger, aircraft will be with you soon – should be recharged in less than an hour”.

There is saving the World and saving the Planet! You decide.

But, possibly, Granholm knows something I am unaware of? Maybe, when we all go Green there won’t be any wars anymore(?!).

Biden doesn’t want to harm the environment, with filthy diesel CO2 belching vehicles.

But littering the countryside with depleted uranium, bombed out cities, and a landscape looking like it’s been hit by a massive meteorite shower, doesn’t count!

And in the next display case we have a rare example of Homo Sapiens, an extinct species that told itself to zig for climate crisis when it should have zagged for adaptation and survival. Scientists now know that adaptation is not automatic as in theories of evolution and instead subject to mental groupthink–move along.
