California’s climate and energy policies will bring thousands of blackouts to entire country
Dr. Jay Lehr and Tom Harris
The power disaster unfolding in California will soon occur across the country, if Joe Biden gets his way. The Golden State has been sweeping away the forms of energy that have provided reliable electricity for decades, under the same agenda the former Vice-President is planning for America as a whole.
Power outages are now commonplace in California. Last summer, the state suffered its first rolling blackouts in nearly 20 years. Imagine if this happened in Chicago in the middle of winter.
California’s trouble is explained by officials who now openly admit to an over-reliance on wind and solar power. The governor said there was not enough wind to keep the turbines going, while cloud cover and nightfall restricted solar power. The Los Angeles Times recognized the root of the problem:
“… gas-burning power plants that can fire up when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing have been shutting down in recent years, and California has largely failed to replace them …”
Consequently, the state has fallen thousands of megawatts behind its needs. Governor Gavin Newsom admitted, “we failed to predict and plan for these shortages” and took (nominal) responsibility for the rolling blackouts. Now he wants everyone to conserve power, while the state looks for new sources of energy, most likely fossil fuel-generated power from neighboring states.
All this is happening while California continues its intention to transition to 60% renewable energy by 2030 and 100% “climate-friendly energy” by 2045, as required by state law.
Indeed, in their October 6 open letter to Newsom, the heads of the California’s Energy Commission, Independent System Operator and Public Utilities Commission wrote: “We are unwavering in our commitment to meeting California’s clean energy and climate goals.”
Team Biden plans to go even further, committing to making the entire nation 100% renewable within 15 years. The United States would fall tens of millions of megawatts behind on its electricity needs.
Like the California government, the incoming Biden-Harris administration is acting entirely under the unfounded belief that climate change is a manmade calamity that can be stopped by eliminating fossil fuel use. They are clearly unaware of the Climate Change Reconsidered series of reports of the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC).
These documents summarize thousands of studies from peer-reviewed scientific journals that either refute or cast serious doubt on the climate scare. They conclude that we are not causing a climate crisis.
Yet, in their October 6 report, Preliminary Root Cause Analysis – Mid-August 2020 Heat Storm, the same heads of California’s Energy Commission, Independent System Operator and Public Utilities Commission highlighted the “climate change-induced extreme heat storm across the western United States” as the first cause of the blackout.
In their view, apparently, shutting down coal, gas and nuclear power plants in California and in states from which California imports electricity played only minor roles.
California’s determination to shift to so-called “green” energy – which is actually anything but clean, green, renewable and sustainable – is being echoed by politicians across the nation. The result, especially in states that don’t enjoy California’s mostly benign weather, is going to be that those in the poorest neighborhoods and those on fixed incomes may be forced to choose between heating and eating.
It also means people trying to run their homes, offices, factories, hospitals and schools on intermittent, weather-dependent, much more expensive wind and solar power will have to get used to never knowing when or for how long their electricity will be on or off. Now in California; soon in the entire USA.
Coherent energy systems are designed with the understanding that portions of the system will be offline from time to time. Power companies compensate for this with reserve power at the ready. However, California has closed its margin for error in response to anti-nuclear and anti-fossil fuel sentiments and climate change concerns. Team Biden intends to do this for the entire United States.
Power outages cannot always be avoided and are more common than one may think. For example, between 2008 and 2017, Illinois had 871 outages, the tenth most by state. Texas had nearly twice as many, giving it the dubious distinction of ranking number two in the list.
But these pale in comparison to California which has the least reliable electrical power system in the nation. It leads in power outages every year. Between 2008 and 2017, it had 4,297 power outages!
The origin of the problem is partly California’s Senate Bill 1368, which in 2006 established the state’s emission standards to reduce greenhouse gases from power plants. Following that year, eleven coal-fired power plants were closed and three were converted to biomass. Only one coal-fired plant remains.
The state also reduced its normal reliance on energy from out of state coal plants.
Yielding to anti-nuclear activists, the state also closed all but one nuclear plant, Diablo Canyon. That plant generates about 18,000 Gigawatt-hours of reliable electricity every year, fully 8.6% of California’s total generation.
But Diablo Canyon will soon be closed too. Not surprisingly, during its construction and operation, anti-nuclear protests were common; nearly two thousand people were arrested for civil disobedience during a two-week period in 1981. In response, in 2016, the California Public Utilities Commission approved a Pacific Gas & Electric Joint Proposal to phase out the state’s remaining nuclear power. That means the operating licenses for Diablo Canyon’s two units will not be renewed when they expire in 2024 and 2025.
Ironically, the Commission did not approve Pacific Gas & Electric’s proposal for resources to replace the station’s output. It does not appear to matter that nuclear reactors produce no greenhouse gas emissions during operation. They are hated by the enviro-radicals who drive California’s energy policy and are steadily putting the state even further behind the 8-ball.
It gets worse. California now requires that all new homes be nearly entirely electric. It wants citizens to switch their natural gas stoves to electric, as part of their global warming initiatives. More than 30 cities have already enacted bans on gas appliances, including San Francisco. The state also hopes to eliminate all gasoline and diesel cars in favor of plug-in electric automobiles.
This means demand for reliable, affordable electricity will rise by leaps and bounds, just as supplies are steadily reduced, and partially replaced by expensive, intermittent, weather-dependent power.
Just as Mr. Biden promises for the nation as a whole, California is sacrificing reliable electrical power as part of its impossible crusade to “stop climate change.” Of course, this will have no impact on our planet’s climate, because (a) climate change is mostly natural and not driven by carbon dioxide, and (b) all those wind turbines, solar panels and backup batteries will be manufactured overseas, mostly in China, using fossil fuels and simply moving the source of ever-increasing greenhouse gas emissions.
However, it will certainly spur sales of candles, flashlights, propane heaters, and natural gas, gasoline and diesel generators.
So, welcome to America’s future under a Biden-Harris-Kerry- AOC Administration. America, the blackouts are coming.
Ohio-based Dr. Jay Lehr is Senior Policy Advisor to the Ottawa, Canada-based International Climate Science Coalition (ICSC). Tom Harris is Executive Director of ICSC.
We live on the California coastal plain. We’ve had two wildfires within 15 km of our house. We’ve had no precautionary power outages. We’ve had no power outages at all, except the occasional per-announced, scheduled outage while the power company is upgrading the power to our area. (We still have new building going on in the area.) This is observational data.
However, I’m not optimistic about the future.
Rolling California electricity blackouts are no surprise! In 2002 Dr Sallie Baliunas, Astrophysicist, Harvard-Smithsonian, Dr Tim Patterson, Paleoclimatologist, Carleton U and Allan MacRae TOLD YOU SO 18 YEARS AGO. We published in 2002:
1. “CLIMATE SCIENCE DOES NOT SUPPORT THE THEORY OF CATASTROPHIC HUMAN-MADE GLOBAL WARMING – THE ALLEGED WARMING CRISIS DOES NOT EXIST.”
See Michael Shellenberger’s 2020 confession “On Behalf Of Environmentalists, I Apologize For The Climate Scare”.
2. “THE ULTIMATE AGENDA OF PRO-KYOTO ADVOCATES IS TO ELIMINATE FOSSIL FUELS, BUT THIS WOULD RESULT IN A CATASTROPHIC SHORTFALL IN GLOBAL ENERGY SUPPLY – THE WASTEFUL, INEFFICIENT ENERGY SOLUTIONS PROPOSED BY KYOTO ADVOCATES SIMPLY CANNOT REPLACE FOSSIL FUELS.”
See Michael Moore’s 2020 film “Planet of the Humans”.
The green objective is to destroy prosperity and move the USA into a planned economy – with a few rich at the top looking down on the many poor peasants. That model now describes most of the countries in the world. Europe and Canada are far down that “road to Venezuela”, and the USA will follow if Biden and the Demo-Marxists are elected.
Allan I am hoping that an armed populace will not allow this to happen. I am 74, still fit, and own a couple of firearms. I am willing to give my life for freedom. If I lived in California I might be hunting some high officials right now. Civil wars are caused by this kind of stuff. Make it hard enough on the common folk and the authorities will be having a problem. I am actually astonished at people just accepting the lockdowns and mask wearing when we know they don’t work. I’m very depressed for the future of this country.
Be concerned, but understand there is no chance there will be a Biden president. Trump et al had this planned scenario completely thought out before the escalator ride.
WUWT readers like to believe that Green Energy is a pox imposed on the population by deranged politicians. Wrong! CA energy policies reflect exactly what the voters demand.
Of course most people are too benighted to understand the consequences. That’s why it’s imperative that CA hit rock bottom with years of deprivation and pain. That will prove to be a great teaching moment for the Golden State , the country and the world.
I urge the same for Green Germany. MAX Renewables. Close all the nuclear plants and fossil fuel plants as fast as possible. “Freeze in the Dark” therapy will leave a devastating, lasting lesson burned onto the brains of dim-witted voters.
Tough Love of this sort is the only thing that will work.
Down here in Australia, I’ve advocated the same for South Australia but since 2016, they keep getting bailed out by the large interconnectors to Victoria along with carefully managed but rarely reported rolling blackouts and windfarm curtailments and local grid overvoltaging (when the amount of rooftop solar and wind generated power threatens to shut down their local baseload gas generators)
Basically, the grid engineers are doing too good a job at covering up the issues caused by the uncontrollable renewable generators – something that is definitely not “sustainable”
It comes at a cost too. The cost of grid balancing in the UK has risen from £200m to £2billion over the last decade. No guesses as to who gets to pay for that.
We’ve seen the example, not just of energy policy but of all sorts of other policy, and nobody seems to have learned yet. I doubt much will change.
The Hollywood, Google, and Apple billionaires and multi-millionaires are not worried. Their estates and mansions have huge propane and diesel powered backup generators to run weeks thru any power blackout. Plus they have private security guards armed with weapons the commoners are not allowed to possess.
Let the plebes go dark… and eat cake.
Reality check. I’ve said it before: The US Democrats have no idea the forces they are about to unleash if they go down this path to destroying the US economy with energy poverty as the US sits on massive supplies of natural gas and oil via fracking. Anti-#2A Gun confiscation will be the least of their problems. The coastal elites only think they can control what happens in the middle.
Think about it folks. The past few Presidents.
Bill Clinton at least was from Arkansas. George Bush one and two were from Texas. Obama hailed from Chicago and Hawaii. Trump and Pence fought for us plebes… from Indiana to Florida to New York. Trump understood the middle class. Bewtween them… although not perfect, they got the middle America struggles.
Now though, Dementia Joe is 50 years from elitist Delaware. Comrade Harris is from elitist, coastal California and private school in Canada. Neither has any insight to middle America.
Their decisions and proclamations because they lack that understanding will be their downfall.
Kammie the Commie last words one day will probably be, “Pardon me sir, I meant not to do it.”
“They are clearly unaware of the Climate Change Reconsidered series of reports of the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC).
These documents summarize thousands of studies from peer-reviewed scientific journals”
Rubbish, that isn’t what they do. They produce cherry-picked, disinformative opinion like this:
Why Scientists Disagree About Global Warming, by the likes of Idso, Carter and Singer citing their own opinions or those of other Heartland disinformers.
Criticize energy policy as hard as you like but don’t base it all on the lie that its an “unfounded belief that climate change is a manmade calamity”. The actual “peer-reviewed scientific journals” report the opposite of these totally discredited doubt-mongers.
Loydo what a load of diarrhoea that was. I am very sorry but those scientist were only discredited within your circle and a circle it truly is.
A circle of jerks, that is for sure.
NOT ONE BIT OF SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE from these LOSERS..
Still waiting, empty-Loy.
1… Do you have any empirical scientific evidence for warming by atmospheric CO2?
2… In what ways has the global climate changed in the last 50 years , that can be scientifically proven to be of human causation?
No scientific evidence, but lots and lots of cherry picking.
The climate warmed over the last 200 years. To them, this is proof that CO2 caused it, despite the fact that the warming started long before the CO2 levels started to rise.
There was a lot of hurricanes last year. To them, this is proof that CO2 is causing more hurricanes, despite the fact that years with lots of hurricanes have happened going as far back as we have records.
Lots of fires in one year. To them, this is proof that CO2 is the cause, completely ignoring the fact that their fellow travelers have spent the last 50 years fighting any attempt at forest management and the fact that in the area where the fires have occurred, temperatures haven’t increased.
And the last time I went to the store, they were out of toilet paper. Now how am I going to clean my screen.
Loydo, like the rest of the warmunists believe that you are only a scientist when you support them.
You whacko greenie-weenies say the darnedest things, none of it true. It’s as if you had no connection with reality at all. Amazing. You must really like that Koolade.
…the whackos you speak of don’t have any sense of thinking on their own. It’s genetic. They can only parrot. I think I discovered that 50 years ago in lefty commie college course: History 250 bullshit something. About half the class were hypnotized, glassy eyed, and could only parrot the books, the prof and each other. A perfect circle of unwavering happiness where no one argued, just parroting. …back story: I survived with a C before which the prof gave me an F claiming my opinion outside his. However, I prevailed. I assured him I’d be in his class quarter after quarter making his life miserable or he could pass my ass. Being a brilliant science student I figured he’d cave. toot toot lol
“produce cherry-picked, disinformative opinion”
Isn’t that what the IPCCCP reports do? They are certainly a long way from reality. Just look at the huge gap between their predictions and reality.
WRONG AS ALWAYS Loy
You STILL can’t even present one tiny bit of evidence for even the most simple of AGW fallacies..
ie warming by atmospheric CO2
ALL you can do is regurgitate anti-science crap, because it all you know.
You know NOTHING of science, because you have NEVER learnt any.
You are just a mindless nil-science muppet
Prove me wrong.. You have been given ample opportunity..
Yet still you remain a total abyss.
Produce ONE of the peer-reviewed studies that shows empirical scientific evidence of warming by atmospheric CO2.
Until then, you are nothing but a yapping trollette LOSER.
How dare you compare Loydo to a’ yapping trollette LOSER’ !!!
Yapping trollette LOSER lives matter; they will be hurt & permanently damaged to be compared to Loydo
Loydo, like all true progressives is convinced to his core that everyone that matters agrees with him, and that’s proof that everyone who disagrees with him is evil.
If Loydo had it’s those of us who dared to disagree with it would already have been rounded up and shipped to the gulags.
Its all you have Loy, and you just keep yapping mindlessly.
You certainly have NO SCIENCE to back up anything you say.
Just a very pitiful plea for attention, same as any other ignorant low-life troll.
You mean Pal-reviewed literature
Will you not be celebrating the anniversary of Climategate, London?
“unfounded belief that climate change is a manmade calamity”
We are STILL WAITING your evidence that human caused GW is actually happening.
Seems to me that YOU have no science to back YOUR unfounded cult-like belief.
UNFOUNDED…….. yep sure is. !!
You keep PROVING that.
Loydo, how do you know today’s modest warmth is caused by anthropogenic CO2 and not whatever natural forcings that was responsible for much greater warmth during most of the Holocene Epoch, poorly understood though they may be.
Loydo appears to be describing the IPCC, particularly the small inner circle of self-referencing proponents of the hockey stick, led by Mann and Schmidt. When they formed Realclimate they probably succeeded in converting more people to skeptics than anyone.
Sometimes I wonder if you are an alter account created by Anthony where he gets on here and writes how a disillusioned misanthrope would be on his site. You are nutz.
Loydo, it’s just a shame that you have not had to put up with a 2-day loss of electricity in the middle of winter, and that was due to an ice storm that affected transmissions. That’s where I live in the Midwest. It was worse in New England last winter, when the power was out for weeks because of WEATHER, you dope.
Intentionally shutting off power is a precursor to sending people to gulags. If you want to go live in one of those hellholes, like Solshenitzen did, then just keep your silly blind head stuck up your backside, because that’s where this is heading.
In Loydo’s “mind”, it’s always those who disagree with him who will be sent to the gulags. He’s convinced that a good little worker like him will be appreciated and rewarded once his masters gain total control over the world.
The surest way to signal your position is based upon nonsense, information suppression and SPIN rather than real science is to bark about “Peer Review” Loydo.
“Peer Review” is a corrupted system that was taken over like the universities by the faceless Cultural Elite years ago. Peer Review is the same as journalisms “Fact Checking.” Cover-up and fabricate. Who checks the Fact Checkers? Who checks the Peer Reviewers? Who you gonna believe peer review or you own lying eyes.
to bark about “Peer Review”
Remove your blinkers you goose, I was quoting the author.
Remove YOUR blindfold Loy-dumb,
You are the moronic goose.
or more like a headless chook, running around cackling mindlessly,
Unable to make a coherent scientific point….. EVAH !!
WHY DO YOU ALWAYS CHOOSE TO BE SO PATHETIC. !!
When you want to know what a liberal is doing, look at what he is claiming that conservatives do.
The only cherry picking going on is by the alarmists and the communists that they work for.
Loydo, you say:
“….Criticize energy policy as hard as you like but don’t base it all on the lie that its an “unfounded belief that climate change is a manmade calamity”. The actual “peer-reviewed scientific journals” report the opposite of these totally discredited doubt-mongers.”
The problem with individuals like you and Griff is your unwillingness to believe that science (and in this case climate science) is corruptible by govt, politics, money and eco-activism. That is a foolish, naïve an just plain ignorant school of thought. Govts and their politicians can be a lot less righteous and benevolent than you think.
The bureaucrats at the UN’s IPCC and UNEP in particular have nothing standing in the way between them and the corrupt manipulation of science due to the fact that they are not democratically elected. The only ones they have to answer to are the eco-activist groups they are allied with and the govts of the world that are providing the money (and people) for their three-ring circus that they run.
And lest you accuse me of defending the fossil-fuel status quo here, let me state that I have absolutely no problem with the replacement of fossil fuel power plants with nuclear power. France has been getting the majority of its electricity from nuclear plants for many years now, and it is the only energy source that can displace fossil fuel power plants on a large scale. Until the day that 4th generation nuclear power plants get here (and IF they get here), we should be repossessing our nuclear waste like France does.
Governments and their politicians, eco-activists, alarmist scientists and mainstream media elites all have political, financial and agenda-driven vested interests in the CAGW alarmist narrative that have absolutely nothing to do with the state of the the Earth’s climate. Only a fool believes otherwise. Those who skeptically apply science to the narrative that cast serious doubt on its credibility are attacked as religious heretics and Orwellian thought criminals (as you are doing). This happens precisely because of the threats those doubts pose to the vested interests in the alarmist narrative that so many people have. The believers who embrace the CAGW narrative for the alarmist pushers are what is sometimes referred to as useful idiots. I forget who coined the term.
Eco-activists who are both anti-fossil fuels and anti-nuclear have their backs to the wall –all they have to offer society is wind, solar and EVs as a alternative. So it doesn’t matter how problematic wind and solar are, they have no choice but to push them to replace fossil fuels and nuclear power. And they desperately need the CAGW narrative to do that.
Loydo, if you and Griff cling to the notion that science is not corruptible (and is not being corrupted) by money and politics, then I suggest to you that you still have a lot of lessons to learn about life. The fossil fuels issue is about as politicized an issue as it can get. My suggestion to you is that you wake up and smell the bovine excrement that we are dealing with here. This website and its readers have provided a large amount of science over the years that should get you started.
BTW Loydo, as I always say, I own a bridge in Brooklyn and I will sell it to you at a great price. This is a limited time offer though, so hurry!
Reprocessing nuclear waste, not repossessing.
I have a problem with replacing fossil fuel with nuclear.
The plants need more CO2.
Save the gas for load following so the nuc’s can run flat out as they are designed to
Why would you say something so demonstrably wrong.
According to Wikipedia (!), NIPCC is a project of three independent non-profit organisations: Science and Environmental Policy Project (SEPP),Centre for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change(CO2 Science), and The Heartland Institute.
Now go to CO2science.org.
Unless you are wilfully blind, you will see there, month by month, peer reviewed papers traceable by Topic Index which challenge the IPCC positions.
These papers are collected in The Climate Change Reconsidered series by Idso, Carter et al.
There are several thousand of such papers to date.
As a simple example under Topic index, click on “C” and then “ Atmospheric Residence Time”.
You will see there a review of Essenhigh (2009) (with an estimated Residence Time for 12 CO2 of ~ 5 years ) as against Solomon et al (2009) claiming a residence time of 50-200 years.
Further Pierre Gosselin at NoTricksZone has made a cottage industry from collecting sceptical peer reviewed papers.
They are arriving almost daily.
Since 2016 he lists more than 600 papers.
And yet in the parallel universe of IPCC supporters, these papers either don’t exist or have been “debunked”.
“These documents summarize thousands of studies from peer-reviewed scientific journals”
Rubbish, that isn’t what they do.”
WRONG AGAIN.. Its is EXACTLY what they do.
Sorry that REAL SCIENCE is beyond your understanding.
Sorry you don’t comprehend… ANYTHING. !
Why do you choose to be so scientifically inept and ignorant ?
For years I have been able to rely on our electricity grid in NZ (as a kid in the fifties we had frequent power outages) with the odd power outage caused by storms or bad drivers but I am now seriously thinking of getting solar hot water and some solar panels so I don’t have to go back to living in a cave because that is what is heading our way but maybe just not as quickly as in the USA.
I seriously think that the west is so self indulgent and decadent that we are heading the same way as the fall of the Roman Empire. Stupid. :((
If you can afford some roof top solar panels and a decent battery bank for lights thru the night… do it while you can. But if your job requires industrial scale electrical power.. forget about your future.
You can’t eat solar panels or batteries. Start a veggie garden too, and some sheep and/or chickens for eggs and protein.
Any ideas how to protect the sheep from hungry poachers?
In the USA we have the 2nd amendment that guarantees us the tools for that.
In NZ, pretty much the only way is to call the police and hope that they make it before the poacher’s take everything you have.
Of course in most banana republics, the police are usually the leaders of the gangs, so you are just out of luck. Unless your country respects and trusts it’s citizens enough to permit them to protect themselves.
More practically, Mike, learn how to cook with a wood-fired stove, and get those reprinted 18th century cookbooks that are available now. You’re going to need that stuff.
If everyone relied on wood for heating, cooking, and hot water, the forests would be gone in a few decades. Wood won’t work. We learned that by the end of the 1800s.
It works after hundreds of millions of people starve to death.
Which is what the ‘elite’ want to happen.
I grew up in house without electricity it’s a long term concern that the whole nation ends up in that situation. Five nines percent of the population don’t know how miserable winter is without electricity.
I can’t afford solar panels of any sort unfortunately. But until paraffin /kerosene becomes unobtainable I’ll use oil lamps which provide heat and light. Aladdin Lamps probably the best non-electric light
Invest in a reasonable sized generator and some diesel storage
It’s is a crazy energy policy, but rolling blackouts have happened this year in Texas too
“The power disaster unfolding in California will soon occur across the country, if Joe Biden gets his way.”
Might want to dial back the rhetoric, cus it is off the scale.
I get the point, but the article is just crazy talk.
Clearly, You really do not know what is happening in California right now.
Significant parts of the state are facing regular power blackouts in the coming years due to malfeasance and incompetence in pursuing “green” agendas. Folks are moving out now. The numbers to come will be staggering when the tally is done.
Maybe that is what the Cal elites wanted? Just them and the criminals and homeless to run the state.
the first of MANY Climate Change Agenda Refugees.
fred250, your comment “Climate Change Agenda Refugees.” is right on the money. The dysfunctional cities/states/countries that embrace this climate change carbon nonsense also have moved into taxing everyone they can, denying construction permits for industry, forcing inappropriate housing into desirable suburban settings, etc. The result is that highly productive/law abiding families mover from the city, from the state, and, yes even from the country. The exodus from Yew York City is staggering. The other side of the deal is the influx of homeless into Los Angeles is equally staggering. What a mess.
It’s not crazy talk. Coal fired plants are rapidly disappearing in the US. Under the Democrats no new nat gas pipelines will be approved, it’s already happened in the northeast US. Sooner or later the Democrats and the greens will come after the remaining natural gas fired plants as well. Nuke plants are down to about 95 from a peak of 115, and more are slated to close. Only one nuke plant has been approved for 40 years and no one know for sure when or even if the one approved site (approved in 2012) will ever come on line.
The future for reliable electric generation is bleak in the US. California is just the canary in the coal mine. It seems that no one in power in the US is watching the canary, however. Certainly not AOC and her “squad”.
California has an omelet problem, as in: “The public shall be limited to an omelet-only diet — but the breaking of eggs shall be strictly forbidden.”
But what the heck? If the policy doesn’t work, CA people can always move to other states, inflict the same bonehead policies in their new homes, and ruin those states, too. As Sleepy Joe loses his remaining marbles, Acting Prexy Kamala can make the whole country more like CA in one fell swoop.
Kamala the Commie is going to #25A ole’ sleepy Dementia Joe by June… if he doesn’t resign first.
Then the real fun starts.
Note: sorry Taiwan, but you’ll be part of Commie China by then unless you can give the Commies a bloody nose to stop the invasion.
These two are Obama stooges, they are the dumbest available for a reason.
The real puppet will be pulling their strings as the puppet masters pull his.
What a freak show.
Only in Amerika.
Space heaters and generators, in addition to giving off prodigious amounts of that “nasty” CO2 also give off actually deadly CO, and prople don’t always operate things in a safe manner, so deaths will most certainly occur from CO poisoning and even fires. Other pollutants will also be given off, greatly contributing to air pollution levels. Thanks, Greenie Libtarded Demotards. And that’s just the beginning, because there is the negative effect on the economy, driving industry away, or snuffing it out altogether, and all the negative knock-on effects of that. I mean, there just aren’t enough thanks available in the world for all the harm that will be done in the imbecilic, suicidal effort to do away with fossil fuels.
“And that’s just the beginning, because there is the negative effect on the economy, driving industry away, or snuffing it out altogether..”
Bingo! That’s the true purpose of the greenie agenda. It isn’t about the science or saving the planet, it’s about stopping Capitalism.
Stop voting Left folks.
Isn’t going to happen.
California’s problem’s were from truly record demand – and from a mismanaged power system which would have problems if conventional or renewable.
There is nowhere that has had blackouts from the roll out of renewables. No, not even south australia.
How many years have Watts readers been predicting the collapse of Germany’s power grid? Well I think I’ve been reading this site since at least 2009…
Griff, how do you think Germany’s grid would have held up had it not had the ability to import electricity from neighboring countries during the numerous times Gernany’s vaunted grid of renewable I mean unreliable energy sources proved incapable of meeting domestic demand?
Who said it would collapse?
I have been saying that it is more inefficient and way more expensive than it should be. But you think the Germans are saving the planet and you clearly don’t care about humans.
Why should Germany and Denmark have the highest electricity prices in the World, despite having the highest proportion of Unreliables (Sorry! Renewables) in their energy mix? After all, wind and sunshine are free….
So you have been reading this site since 2009 and still haven’t learnt anything. That is sad.
“and from a mismanaged power system”
Mismanaged by installing way too much UNRELIABLE supply
…that couldn’t supply the demand WHEN REQUIRED.
Well done griff.. fool !
Now get a big rag and wipe that BS of yours off your face.
In griff’s “mind”, this can’t’ be the fault of the managers following the law. Progressives are incapable of making mistakes, therefore the law cannot be to blame. That is a logical impossibility.
It must be the fault of capitast spies who have infiltrated the system with the intent of making progressives look bad.
Therefore the solution is to root out and kill anyone with capitalist tendencies. Only then will a perfect world arise.
It really is amazing how griff actually believes he knows what he’s talking about, even as he spouts more and more unbelievable lies.
There was no record demand in CA. The so called mismanaged power system was being managed as the law dictated. A law that you have frequently praised.
Despite the fact that those who run the systems have identified renewable energy as the source of the blackouts, griff keeps yelling that they are innocent. In griff’s mind, it actually knows more about power systems than do the people who run them. Then again, griff is still claiming that polar bears are on the brink of extinction, despite ever growing numbers of actual polar bears.
For the first time, I can see a benefit if fraudulent Biden is declared the election winner. With disastrous power generation policies, the ordinary Americans will be sorely affected, and may at last come to their senses. That should ensure a loss for the Dems in 4 years time, unless they can continue their cheating ways and amplify their magnitude. Such a loss might also enable politicians in other countries, including here in New Zealand, to come to their senses and realise that they have been misled by the biggest hoax of all time. Could this be the end of thios nightmare?
Never underestimate the human capacity for self-delusion.
I wish I could share your optimism. The way the Democrats have subverted and stolen the 2020 election tells me there will never be another honest, representative election in the US again.
Given the increase in fraud in this election compared to the last, what makes you think that the American people will be allowed to vote the Democrats out of office in 4 years time.
Mike, in the US the media is completely controlled by the Left. Any energy problems will immediately be blamed on climate change with numerous “experts” quoted.
Yeah revenge is a dish best served cold….sic.
Political Dumbo here asking: Can somebody become POTUS twice?
Say: if Sleepy Joe fouls it all up, could Donald come back in 4 years time and then have possibly 8 years as POTUS?
Maybe a Cunning Plan is afoot – would anyone ‘put it past him’?
Chickens yes maybe. I’d assert that a Dovecote would be good also
Maybe not sheep tho.
A pig maybe, ideally, a cow
Cows are great. Like elephants they don’t forget. A lot like horses in many ways, great company and a Good way to spend any day.
They are (both) excellent ‘listeners’ for when you want to rage/rave/vent or, to explore the thermodynamics of the Green Gas Garbage House Effect.
THE best way to understand anything is to explain it to someone else. Cows understand.
They listen but as soon as you get boring/tedious or OT, they simply wander away leaving you standing there like A Muppet.
ASSUMING you have the self-awareness and personal integrity to realise same.
Hard lessons indeed
Yes, DJ Trump could run for POTUS in 2024. Not likely though. His age would be a huge factor.
But hopefully by then, South Dakota Gov Kristi Noem and former South Carolina Gov Nicki Haley will be at the front of the GOP pack. Either of those two will thrash Kammie Harris in the general election.
Methinks Florida’s Governor Ron DeSantis is the future candidate.
Biden’s age wasn’t a factor this year.
DJ Tump would be, in 2024, the same age as sleepy joe is now. Age clearly isn’t the factor you think it is. Though I doubt Trump will run again in 2024. After everything he and his family have been put through the last 4 years and everything the Dems will be putting him through in the next 4 (what, you thought they’d stop once he leaves office? an example must be made so no other outsiders like Trump ever think of throwing their hat in the ring). I wouldn’t be surprised if the Dems trump up (no pun intended) charges of some kind to get Trump and his family behind bars before 2024 rolls around just to preclude the possibility of another Trump term in office.
US Presidents are allowed 2 terms in office, which means that Trump could run again and have one 2nd term, but only the one.
This recession is going to last until mid-2024, per a financial analyst at Deloitte as well as several others, so plan accordingly. Biden + Harris will likely bankrupt this country, because they think like the rest of their species: up above it all while the rest of us are rolling around in the mud and will keep quiet as long as they throw money and “goodwill” at us.
I’d say let the democrats ruin themselves. The rest of us will survive nicely.
Most of us will survive. I don’t know about nicely. It’s going to get rough in a few years.
If the Democrats are allowed to steal this election, worrying about 2024 is pointless. They’ll just steal every election from now on… if they even allow elections in future.
Why wouldn’t they, if they’ve proven they can get away with fraud this blatant?
Trump seems to understand this, given he’s been purging people in the military.
Yeah, well, I also cook, guys.
Can somebody become POTUS twice?
There have been many who have been elected POTUS twice. Though usually they’re consecutive terms Clinton, Bush the younger, and Obama are the 3 most recent Presidents to do so. So far only 1 president was elected POTUS to two, non-consecutive terms: Grover Cleveland. He was the 22nd (1885-89) and the 24th president (1893-97).
However, ever since passage of the 22nd amendment, a President is limited to two terms in office, So Trump can only server for 1 more 4 year term in office, so, in your scenario, after Biden “fouls it all up”, Trump could theoretically come in an would only have 4 years to clean up the mess that Biden/Harris made, not the 8 you are hoping for.
People will only start noticing that something is wrong not only through the blackouts, but more importantly through the power bills. The vast majority only care about their wallets. South Australia has the highest power prices in the world now and is a process of reverting back to a giant park. The charlatan Elon Musk built a battery at a cost of 650mnl $ that would supply 50,000 homes for 20min. The rest including the rapidly diminishing remnants of the industry can stay in darkness.
Black outs Matter.
Aha! The affliction of the analyst…To know more and more about less and less until eventually they know everything about nothing.
gotta use the heads up / wide angle/ common sense lens occasionally… else “peer review” becomes a feed back loop, a sort of intellectual black hole for the astrophysicist!
Now that Chancellor Joe and his squad of twats write the laws, interpret the laws and enforce the laws all from the voices in their empty heads they can pay for their Green Raw Deal by disbanding the courts and legislature and rebuild the national infrastructure with labor supplied by deniers rounded up into re-education centers.
When is renewable energy least available? At night.
When does it make most sense to recherge your electric vehicle? When you’re home at night.
Anyone else see a problem?
If you are somewhere with regular blackouts – you will plug your EV into the power on your arrival home to ensure that your charge is topped up – at the same time as everyone else is doing so and when evening meals are being cooked. This also often matches the time when the Sun goes down and solar power stops.
The continual blackouts are not a sign of failure – they are intended and they are already working. HP has now stated its intention to move to Texas. That will work as long as there are states that have baseload power and tax regimes that will support industry. Federal strategy and taxation will be imposed by the new ‘regime’, and, eventually the companies will move out to a country with reliable baseload power that has been commissioning a new coal fired power station every 2 weeks: China. The useful idiots will be really happy about that and Biden will have paid back his $1.5Bn
As I recall, Senile Joe spoke of support for nuclear
Joe also said poor kids are as bright as white kids, so not sure where Joe’s thoughts are.
Like most of Joe’s positions, which side he takes depends on who he’s talking to and what day of the week it is.
Joe who ran for the Senate against George?
Yes, just check him out, if you don’t like what you see you can vote for the other Biden.
There is no national power system. It is a bunch of regional systems that rely on each other to greater and lesser degrees.
To have nationwide blackouts as suggested by the title, we would first need to build a national super grid that connects the regional systems, then those systems would need to rely on each other for capacity, then something would have to cause an outage.
Permits for the big transmission lines that are needed to make this happen take a long time. The ARRA funds from 2008 supported one line from Wyoming to California. It isn’t close to being built yet.
The national supergrid needed to make it possible to have nationwide outages will not be in place during a Biden administration. Realistically, it would take more than 20 years to permit and construct. Maybe more like 50+ years or never.
Let’s hope for NEVER, vboring, because if I wanted to live in the 18th century, I’d find a way to move back there.
Just think: instead of electricity, we’d use lamps lit by whale oil. We’d use tallow candles or if we’re semi-rich, wax candles made from petroleum. We’d have to have a pig or two in a shed, plus a personal supply of chickens for meat and eggs, and at least one reliable horse to drive around to various local shops whilst running errands. And someone has to clean those stalls, so there’s that part: hire a street urchin and pay him six pence a week plus food and a place to sleep, just to clean stalls. Otherwise, you walk, rain or shine, muddy or dry. 🙂
Civilization was fun while it lastes, wasn’t it?
The article did not say that there would be a single nationwide blackout, but that the entire country will start seeing blackouts. Big difference.
All they have to do is to force all of those regional grids to get rid of reliable fossil/nuclear power and replace it with unreliable “renewable” power.
vboring: “To have nationwide blackouts as suggested by the title, we would first need to build a national super grid that connects the regional systems, then those systems would need to rely on each other for capacity, then something would have to cause an outage.”
The phrase “nationwide blackouts” in this article is clearly being used in the context that a larger number of blackouts will begin to occur in a larger number of regional power grids across the nation as the penetration of wind and solar increases within each regional grid.
The impacts of California style energy policies being applied nationally will not begin to be experienced in the US writ large until the late 2020’s and early 2030’s.
However, if the Democrats decide to push existing environmental and national security law to its absolute limits in quickly in reducing America’s GHG emissions, the future impacts on the public writ large of California style energy policies could become exceptionally burdensome by the end of a two-term Biden-Harris presidency in the late 2020’s.
Whether or not Biden-Harris will choose to go as far and as fast as current law allows them to go in reducing our GHG emissions remains to be seen.
In the meantime, let’s keep an eye on what happens in California and in New York State with the closing of the Diablo Canyon and the Indian Point nuclear reactors, respectively, and with their bans on natural gas pipeline construction and infrastructure upgrades.
As the loony leftys experience the results of their folly maybe they will come to their senses.. then again maybe they won’t. But another disturbing development is happening. People fleeing California are moving to other states and bringing with them the political policies that destroyed California. So they will inflict the same disastrous policies in their new states thus destroying them too.
“As the loony leftys experience the results of their folly maybe they will come to their senses”
If they do, it will be too late. Our ancestors took generations to build our reliable power generation and distribution systems. When the left wreck them, you can’t just turn them back on if they change their mind.
California should have known, solar systems have their highest electricity production at midday.
The surge of production from near-zero to maximum causes disturbances on the grid, aka DUCK-curves.
Southern California and Southern Germany, with high MW of installed solar, have major DUCK-curves on sunny days.
At present, mostly gas-fired, combined-cycle gas-turbine (CCGT) plants are used to counteract the DUCK-curve surges.
In California, the shutdowns of 15 of 19 coastal, CCGT plants led to rolling blackouts during a multi-day heat wave covering a large area of the US southwest, followed by forest fires.
Climate fighters want to shut down the CCGT plants and replace them with utility-scale battery systems.
Climate fighters accused the plants of heating the Pacific Ocean!
NOTE: In case of Germany, whenever it has excess wind and solar electricity (which has high subsidized costs/kWh), it usually spreads the excess into grids of nearby countries at very low, even negative, wholesale prices (excess supply lowers the price).
Whenever Germany has very little wind and solar electricity, these countries sell to Germany at higher wholesale prices (shortages increase prices). That procedure avoids having utility-scale battery systems, which would be off-the-charts more expensive, as shown in this article.
Two socialist idiots at the helm, and they did it without the Voters. Who would vote for higher taxes, job killing regulations that drive industry to other countries and kill small business. And abuse of our rights. I think not that many voters to win an election.
What a surprise for the California governor that the sun does not shine at night and the wind does not blow all the time.
Orange man bad, dude.
Orange man bad.
I’ve seen people online say that a number of their Boomer relatives are regretting voting for Harris because orange man bad… because now they’re discovering just what they really voted for. Not that it would have made much difference because the Democrats would just have faked more votes.
TNX Sara for you response RE:” national”
Virtually anything that is “national” has us going down the failed theories of the socialists and maxists. This is especially obvious in a large country like the U.S. where geography and climate and economic factors vary wildly. I hesitate to include social aspects, because I would be called a racist.
My two questions for you folks on the left coast is:
– how did the state intend to generate/produce the absurd amount of energy you folks require? I can unnerstan enacting regulations and such that force the power companies to move out, but to convert their efficient, reliable gas plant to solar? On their 200 acre site? And no taxpayer subsidies?
– did the “law” that seems to dictate “all electric” homes have a provision to build new power plants and new infrastructure to carry all the volts and amps? And are the new plants built and operated by the state? Ditto for new power lines.
The California experiment should provide many lessons to the rest of our country as well as the world. But I only pray that the migrants/refugees leave their politics behind . They ruinded Colorado, Nevada, Arizona and now Idaho. Efforts in Texas are already evident.
Took us a few decades to achieve some kinda balance here in Florida as we reduced the impact of all those folks coming down here from New Yawk and New Joisey in the 70’s and 80’s.
Will the last person to leave California please switch the lights off.
Ohhh …. they’re already off?
So many useful idiots, so little time.
I’d like to offer a bit of a contrarian take. Robert Bryce has an excellent Power Hungry podcast episode with atomic energy blogger Rod Adams. It’s very upbeat on the new AP1000s and the various other new designs. There’s also a lot of fascinating behind the scenes stuff:
They say only Nixon could’ve gone to China. It’s probably easier for the democrats to get the nuclear ball rolling. There are pro nuclear democrats. As much as I dislike climate inquisitor Sheldon Whitehouse, he is pro nuclear.
@Olen, et al
To see the shift in voting for those we see today, then go back to the 60’s and then the establishment of the Dept of Education. Look at the addition or even replacement of core studies with “socially oriented” crapola.
Many of the pols elected since the late 90’s grew up with BS education and we lost emphasis upon unredacted history, warts and all, a course on the U.S. constitution and history, basic math, and lottsa reading and writing so you could communicate. You do not need a lotta calculus, no need to dissect a frog, but a few science classes to explain seasons, our orbit around the sun and maybe some geology to place our current condition in perspective.
My children and grandchildren have not had to endure many of the classes I had to endure. They could opt for some kinda music appreciation, whatever that is, or maybe a class on watercolor painting.
And yet one group constantly fights efforts to have school choice options subsidized by the taxpayer when the basic government schools are costing over 10,000 bucks per student in many schools. And guess what political persuasion most of the administrators and teachers exemplify? Oh well, next few years will be interesting.
They can’t prove AGW, but we can prove the wackos stupidity. Let’s go NG & save everyone a lot of money and headaches.
Of course, if Biden gets the presidency, then everything will depend on whether Republicans hold the U.S. Senate or not.
If the Republicans hold the Senate, then most of the socialist insanity can be blocked.
If the Democrats control the U.S. Senate and use this to try to impose a socialist agenda on the nation, I have a feeling a lot of Red States and their people are not going to go quietly into the night.
Shame on us all as Denmark shows world leadership-
Presumably they figure North Sea oil will largely be exhausted and uneconomic by 2050. LOL.
A first year engineering student could have predicted the energy shortage. What is so hard to understand that every night the solar energy shuts down? Guaranteed!!! Trust me. You can take that to the bank. So every night where the wind is NOT blowing you have no power. Again, guaranteed!!! Calif believed that other energy producers out of state would bail them out. Well you can’t always depend on that as we found out (I live in northern CA).
I’ve lost track of the number of solar energy advocates who assure me that there is a perfect match between solar energy availability and energy demand.
They take it as granted that energy demand is greatest around noon just when the sun is the strongest.
They have never, not even once, bothered to check to see whether this is true.
Even in places where they have to use the AC a lot, this assumption isn’t true. Max energy load comes in the late afternoon and continues well after sun down.
For those places where heaters are more important that AC, max demand comes in the middle of the night when the temperatures get the coldest.
And don’t get me started on the morons who think that solar power is going to recharge their electric cars batteries over night.
Not to worry. State & national capitals and the neighborhoods occupied by our betters in government won’t have any problems losing electricity, so that means there won’t be a problem to fix…
