Last month, 74 US medical and public health groups released a “U.S. Call to Action,” declaring climate change a “true public health emergency” that can be solved by “urgent action.” The statement calls for a transition away from hydrocarbon energy and a move to a low-carbon economy. But actual weather and health trends don’t support either the alarm or the demanded actions.
The statement was endorsed by the American Medical Association, the American Heart Association, and the American College of Physicians. These and other organizations pronounced climate change the “greatest public health challenge of the 21st century.”
The statement proclaims that “extreme heat, powerful storms and floods, year-round wildfires, droughts, and other climate-related events” are caused by “fossil fuel combustion,” which is said to be the “primary driver of climate-change.” They go on to say that we can solve these problems by transitioning away from hydrocarbon fuels, coal, oil, and natural gas, and toward renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Last week, the majority of the continental US was caught in a heat wave. About 85 percent of the population experienced daily high temperatures of over 90 degrees Fahrenheit and more than half saw temperatures of over 95oF. But these temperatures were far below state record high temperatures of past decades.
History shows that the warmest US decade on record was the 1930s, long before industry emitted significant amounts of carbon dioxide. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), 23 of the 50 state record high temperatures were recorded during the 1930s. Thirty-six of the 50 state record highs occurred prior to 1960.

Last week, temperatures in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania peaked at about 100 degrees Fahrenheit. But these temperatures were far below the state record highs, which were Iowa (118oF in 1934), Illinois (117oF in 1954), Indiana (116oF in 1936), Ohio (113oF in 1934), and Pennsylvania (111oF in 1936).
This year has also been a year of floods in the Mississippi River valley. Unfortunately, our medical professionals now parrot the idea that floods and droughts are more extreme than in past years. But NOAA has very good records over the last century for the portion of the continental US that is either very wet or very dry, using a metric called the Palmer Drought Index. The index shows no significant trend of increasing drought or flood over recent decades.

“Powerful storms” are listed by the health statement as one of the results of human-caused global warming. Hurricane Barry dropped up to 15 inches of rain on parts of Louisiana earlier this month. The storm was said to be stronger from human emissions.
But there is no evidence that storms are getting either stronger or more frequent. Nine of the 13 strongest hurricanes to make US landfall in the historical record came ashore prior to 1965. Both the number of hurricanes and the number of strong hurricanes making US landfall has been flat to declining since 1900. NOAA data also shows that the number of strong tornados has been declining since the 1970s.

Last year’s forest fire disasters in California were blamed on human-caused global warming. Health professionals now appear to believe that wildfires are “year-round” and caused by emissions from our industry and vehicles.
But recent Congressional testimony by Dr. Judith Curry disputes this conclusion. Dr. Curry provided evidence that the US area burned by fires prior 1930 was at least as large as today. She also cited a study that showed that the percent of US sites reporting fires was much larger prior to 1900, before fire-suppression techniques were used.
In fact, rather than being a health crisis, much evidence shows that moderately warmer temperatures are good for people. The US influenza season is approximately November through March every year, during the cold months. The influenza season in the Southern Hemisphere is during the southern winter months. More people get sick during periods of cold temperature than during hot temperatures.
Many peer-reviewed studies show that more people die during winter months than summer months. The late Dr. William Keating studied temperature-related deaths for people aged 65 to 74 in six European countries. He found that deaths related to cold temperatures were nine times greater than those related to hot temperatures. Evidence shows that if Earth warms, temperature-related deaths will likely to decrease overall.
The climate alarm from health professionals defies common sense. According to data from NOAA, NASA, and the Climate Research Unit in East Anglia University in the UK, average global surface temperatures have warmed only one degree Celsius in 135 years, since 1880.
Average temperatures in Norfolk, Virginia are 5.8oC warmer than in Chicago, Illinois. Average temperatures in Miami, Florida are more than 15oC warmer than Chicago. Is everyone dying from the heat in Norfolk and Miami?
And why do most US senior citizens retire to Florida, Texas, and Arizona, rather than North Dakota, Maine, and Alaska? Don’t they know our medical professionals say that warm climates are dangerous?
The belief that changing light bulbs, driving electric cars, and erecting wind turbines can improve human health is as medieval as the belief that bloodletting can cure disease.

Theodoric of York, medieval barber (Steve Martin) would be so proud of these medical “professionals”. LOL
More people need to ask how so many such organizations became so ideologically unbalanced.

COLD WEATHER KILLS 20 TIMES AS MANY PEOPLE AS HOT WEATHER
By Joseph D’Aleo and Allan MacRae, September 4, 2015
https://friendsofsciencecalgary.files.wordpress.com/2015/09/cold-weather-kills-macrae-daleo-4sept2015-final.pdf
Cold weather kills. Throughout history and in modern times, many more people succumb to cold exposure than to hot weather, as evidenced in a wide range of cold and warm climates.
Evidence is provided from a study of 74 million deaths in thirteen cold and warm countries including Thailand and Brazil, and studies of the United Kingdom, Europe, the USA, Australia and Canada.
Contrary to popular belief, Earth is colder-than-optimum for human survival. A warmer world, such as was experienced during the Roman Warm Period and the Medieval Warm Period, is expected to lower winter deaths and a colder world like the Little Ice Age will increase winter mortality, absent adaptive measures. These conclusions have been known for many decades, based on national mortality statistics.
WORLD
Cold weather kills 20 times as many people as hot weather, according to an international study analyzing over 74 million deaths in 384 locations across 13 countries, published in The Lancet. http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(14)62114-0/abstract
…
UNITED KINGDOM AND EUROPE
The Guardian examined Excess Winter Mortality after the 2012/13 hard winter. A total of about 50,000 Excess Winter Deaths occurred that winter in the UK. http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2013/nov/26/excess-winter-deaths-up-29
http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/subnational-health2/excess-winter-mortality-in-england-and-wales/index.html
UNITED STATES
“Data from the US National Center for Health Statistics for 2001-2008 shows that on average 7,200 Americans died each day during the months of December, January, February and March, compared to the average 6,400 who died daily during the rest of the year. In 2008, there were 108,500 ‘excess’ deaths during the 122 days in the cold months (December to March). “
AUSTRALIA
Even in warmer climates such as Australia, Thailand and Brazil a similar pattern exists. Australians are up to 30% more likely to die during winters than summers, as determined in a study by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2015/01/150112110820.htm
CANADA
In 2006, there were 5,640 excess deaths during the winter months in Canada.
We hear these health warnings every July, which is the warmest and driest month of the year for most of the continental United States, and it has been that way for decades, if not centuries. But the days are much longer than the nights in July, so that people can do outdoor activities in the morning or late afternoon, and remain indoors during the hottest part of the day (normally 11 AM to 4 PM), unless there is a beach nearby.
But all those who are blasting fossil fuel usage as the cause of heat waves are usually silent when we get a cold “polar vortex” or heavy snowstorms in winter (or sometimes late autumn or early spring), when those fossil fuels are really useful for heating our homes and powering snowplows, and people in northern states are usually thankful when they get a mild winter.
Have to wonder whether to TRUST the judgment of these physicians enough to consult them medically.
Do they often give opinions on topics they don’t understand, such as what is ailing you?

yes -all to often
If you click to the organization that originated this press release, Climate Health Action, and then click on the “view the Signers,” you get nothing! Is it possible that this press release is entirely bogus?
It would be interesting to try and find someone who admits to signing this propaganda.
“The statement proclaims that “extreme heat, powerful storms and floods, year-round wildfires, droughts, and other climate-related events” are caused by “fossil fuel combustion,” which is said to be the “primary driver of climate-change.” ”
A pack of lies.
Many of the things these people are saying are patently false.
Show one place where there has been a year round wildfire?
Where have wildfires occurred in the middle of Winter, ever?
And where is a single smidgen of evidence that any storm, flood, heat wave, or any weather related event, has ever been “caused” by burning fossil fuels?
There is none, because this is a gigantic load of steaming crap.
There is likewise zero evidence that any form of combustion, or the concentration of CO2 in the air, has ever been a driver of climate change…ever.
Do doctors still accept “First do no harm”?
How can it be that Drs. of all professions do not understand that CO2 is the basis for all life on the planet!? How? Yet they seem to have time to sign on to the cabal’s mission.
The reality is that, based on the paleoclimate record and the work done with models, the climate change that we have been experiencing is caused by the sun and the oceans over which mankind has no control. Despite the hype, there is no real evidence that CO2 has any effect on climate and there is plenty of scientific rationale to support the idea that the climate sensitivity of CO2 is zero. Currently the climate change we have been experiencing is so small that it takes networks of sophisticated sensors, decades to even detect it. Do not mix up weather cycles with true climate change. But even if we could somehow stop the Earth’s climate from changing, extreme weather events and sea level rise would continue because they are part of the current climate so what is the point? Mankind has been unable to change one extreme weather event let alone change global climate. We do not even know what the optimum global climate is let alone how to achieve it. We are better off trying to solve problems that mankind has the power to solve rather than waste time, money, and resources on problems like climate change that we do not have the power to solve.
These are the same people that told me to eliminate fat and eat complex carbohydrates – you know, fruit and whole grains.
Since eliminating the latter and indulging the former I have lost 40lbs body fat.
My advice is stay away from AMA and AHA and ACofP doctors.
Watching The Weather Channel again eh Sunny?
That’s yer problem, Buckwheat …

Many people like me have had the climate change story thrown in to our lifes, its every where. For example london was very very hot yesterday, trains were cancelled, and people suffered, yet its raining hard now.. All people want to know is what is causing the heat, from america, to india to europe, is it solar flairs? The earths current weak magnetic field? The jet streams? Has it got something to do with magnetic north being so off? All we need is straight forward factual answers.. And not simply “its the weather”.. The worlds governments don’t really care, as fossil fuel companies received 20+ billion alone from the uk, the usa is drilling for gas and more then ever before.
First requisite in all this is, have a mind, literally, have the ability to ‘host’, to have, to enjoy, to employ rational thought; I don’t think you’re anywhere near meeting that requisite … so it is as profitable ‘engaging’ you as it is (as the saying goes) ‘teaching physics to a dog’.
AMA has been pushing gun control as a “public health issue” for a few years.
O’Sullivan’s Law applies.
The Medical Associations should be investigating what causes radical leftists to lose touch with reality so easily. Maybe they can find a cure for TDS.
For TDS you need shrinks – and that would be the domain of the APA (the American Psychiatric Association) not so much the AMA …
“The American Psychiatric Association is the main professional organization of psychiatrists and trainee psychiatrists in the United States, and the largest psychiatric organization in the world. Its some 37,800 members …”
your title is wrong
examples of doctors being so foolish include
— applauding president Obama and his statement about keeping your health plan and your doctor
—- support for eugenics in 20th century
—- support of government medicine
and many more….
Ah, not to worry. These are the very same folks that have told us how to cure heart disease by stamping out cholesterol, how to become thin and healthy by not eating meat and fats, how to end high blood pressure by eliminating salt, how to … Well, you should discern the credibility the public has amid the obesity epidemic, the continuing number one killer of heart disease, the opioid crisis, the Alzheimer’s crisis, etc.
Most people now understand that what those listed tell you to do, you should do the opposite–that is if you want to live.
I think we will be hearing more of this as the immigration explosion and the compulsory use of EVs continue while the legacy energy utilities and grid remain locked in at their current production capacities.
Its amazing that those who allegedly had to pass biochemistry courses to obtain a degree in medicine or health fail to understand that plants thrive on CO2.
Well here’s the grab bag remedy for Australia’s PM who declared the nation has to do something about the suicide rate-
https://www.msn.com/en-au/news/australia/the-vast-tragedy-at-the-core-of-australias-suicide-rates/ar-AAEPziK?ocid=spartanntp
‘To reach his “zero suicide” goal, Morrison is going to have to implement reforms that run counter to the fundamentals of his politics. He won’t just have to repeal robo-debt, he’ll have to refund it. He’ll have to raise Newstart and beg forgiveness. He’ll have to overhaul our healthcare system, and all but get rid of private health to make access to therapy, psychiatry, and medication affordable. He’ll have to act on the existential horror that is climate change. He’ll have to resettle our refugees. He’ll have to end the housing crisis. He’ll have to achieve justice for Indigenous Australians. He’ll have to reshape the culture that has shaped Australia’s identity for the past 200 years. And then some.’
Might be nice if first up they stopped grooming the kiddies from knee high to a grasshopper that they’re all doomed with the climate change bogeyman.
Years ago, working in Australia, my professional medical college sent out a survey, looking to generate interest in a global warming activist campaign to be run by the college. We sent our submissions in, and the medical college backed down. Members didn’t support, some argued science (thankyou WUTU), others argued economic impact on our communities. Haven’t heard any more since.
US professional medical organisations risk alienating membership if they are anything like Australian ones. We are taught to question, read original papers and do systematic reviews.
Forget all that calm rational measured approach peter as now the fearsome fungus is coming to get us all-

With this constant barrage of doom from their supposed grown-ups you can’t really blame the kiddies for jumping off tall buildings with the poley bears and exploding in the classrooms.
If my doc ever speaks of globalwarmingclimatechangecatastrophewehave18moleft, I will tell him to stop right there and I will walk out of the room and look for another.
