Although he’s been running this blog as a labor of love for more than ten years, Anthony has never had more than a week or so off to relax and recharge.
Long time readers will remember me from the pre-Climategate days and the tumultuous period during and after.
I’ll be running the blog for the next couple of months while Anthony takes some well-deserved time off.
To introduce myself to readers who don’t have squatters’ rights that reach back into that distant past, here are a few posts from that ancient time, the old days, when the Internet ran on steam.
The CRUtape Letters™, an Alternative Explanation.
Climategate–the Made Up Story, or Mr. Assange, WUWT?
And my favorite overall in the competition for best title.
I forwarded the email before I was against it
So things may be a little different around here through August.
I hope we can have some fun.
And don’t hate change.
Anyone else that still wants to volunteer to be a moderator, let me know via the contact form.

Well, welcome back, Charles The. Have fun. In moderation.
I am most happy to see you back Charles. I always thought you were the best moderator ever.
Oops, I think that M-word will get me landed in moderation yet again. 🙂
HIs wife having been killed by Hessians and his house burned down in a raid, Pastor James Caldwell was at the battle of Springfield outside his church. When the Patriot’s wadding (for loading muskets) ran out, he went in the church and brought out a hymn book by Isaac Watts, and began tearing out the pages.
“Put Watts in ’em, boys! Give ’em Watts!”
Happy Fourth!
“Put Watts in ’em, boys! Give ’em Watts!”
I’m more peaceful, so can I give them Watts with Ohm?
thomasl3125 “I’m more peaceful, so can I give them Watts with Ohm?”
Peaceful “resistance”
That was funny XD
From a later War of Independence:
“Give ’em Watts fur, Davy!”

Seems like violets would be EE82EE. Excessively pedantic I suppose.
Very good memories from the old days, ctm. Glad to see you in charge while the boss gets his time off.
Happy Independence Day!. Anyone can celebrate a Fourth of July, only we fortunate US have it as Independence Day.
The US gave the Philippines independence on that day in 1946
Anthony and the rest of you deserve medals. It’s wonderful what you do, and an important bastion of truth.
Nice one Charles – we WUWThatters based in the UK are with you all the way. Well done that man. And heartfelt good wishes to Anthony who we hope is on a sunlounger somewhere, beer in hand….
Before it goes dark, and , COLD…
On July 3, 1776, Gen. Howe landed on Staten Island. By November, he had driven Washington out of New York and across NJ to PA, with loss of most of the Continental army.
But on Boxing Day, Washington’s remnant struck back against the Empire’s Hessian mercs:
Without shoes.
And as if for emphasis, he was our only unanimously elected President. (:
Great news to hear that Anthony is finally taking the time off he so deserves.
Wait…
last time this happened
was Nov 2009.
Anthony went to Europe and you took over and then all hell broke loose and I read about 2000 mails and didnt sleep.
Whatever happened to the rest? Was there nothing of interest in the remaining bunch at all?
I wrote some code to do a concordance for every mail and offered that out for folks if they wanted to
play with it. I’d probably rewrite it given all the new tools in R for textual analysis
The volume of mails was pretty huge and the only way for me to do what I do is I would have
to re read all of them and build up in my head a kind of mental map of everything
there was no way I could commit the time to do it the way I did before– basically read every last word
and every mail until i know the whole thing by heart. 1000 mails was easy, the whole batch?
too long.
Yep. And yet there are people out there who still desperately want to believe it was an external hacker and not an internal leak.
The thousands that were initially released were released after only a week or so of the last email dated in the bunch. That would have given a “hacker” only a week to put together the large set of coherent emails that was released and leave little else that people like Mosher and Anthony could find in the rest after all this time.
The only sensible explanation is that it must have been an internal leak compiled over a very long time by a concerned employee.
Mr. M0Sher,
Here’s a suggestion which has worked for me in organizing long research documents: as you plow through the information, create the outline as you go, using HEADINGS and headings and so on.
Each time you come to a topic which appears to be new to you, check your outline/table-of-contents-in-progress.
If topic not found, add (either as subtopic or a new MAIN topic).
If you would like some free secretarial assistance, I would be happy to help (once my new laptop is ready around July 12).
Just ask a mod for my email. This being the permission to give it to you.
Eager to get that last batch of climategate emails out there,
Janice
No, apparently they quickly read everything (all the millions of lines) and decided that there was nothing of interest. Mosh went to sniper school shortly thereafter and here we are.
Only last week we had a certain satellite based group join the ‘adjust to stay in the funding ‘ game. No comment here.
Science? We’ve got funding.
you must be new here.
I’ll bet in some circles Anothony’s semi retirement is seen as cheering news, in an odd way.
CTM, thanks for willing to moderate this unordered, individualistic, chaotic bunch of skeptics (myself included), one of the most problematic, unpaid, but rewarding jobs in this world…
Hope that Anthony has a very good vacation and returns with a fresh courage to fill another 10 years with new ideas, articles and discussions…
Hi Charles,
Thanks for volunteering (?) to help Anthony out. He deserves a good break or even two.
Looking forward to your efforts and contributions.
Wishing you the very best.
Ah, CTM, never met, only exchanged a few times back in the day, yet I know we are in safe hands!
Never mind the days or yore, still work to be done! Avast!
It would be presumptuous to assume we were still on speaking terms, Charles the Moderator.
I still hold you in the highest regard, as I do Anthony, despite our differing views on the GHE and CO2’s role in our atmosphere. Time will carry one of us across the line first. I just hope we are all around to see where the chips fall, although I have my doubts. Reason takes far longer to put on his boots than the truth does. Glad Mr. W is getting a well deserved break from the s**t storm that is the climate debate.
Reply: I have no memory of any conflict, so I wouldn’t worry about it. There are certain times I’ve had to argue against the opinions of many people who visit, The PRiPers incident comes to mind.~ctm
No incident at all. I was hoping you would make it up to Banff for a frosty cold one after a good long hike up Johnson Canyon together.
I just know how many here feel about those who dispute the greenhouse analogy.
All the best, Charles.
P.S. I have moved to even more picturesque surroundings.
What could be more picturesque than Banff?
GTRDN Charles!
All the best from the eeewwwmidity in FL.
Willing to assit if needed. L8R》
Good on you for stepping in Charles and helping Anthony get his much-deserved break. I just went to the link and re-read the Climategate post. Wow – real hair-raised-on-the-back-of-the-neck stuff. And for you to have been such a vital part of it! Exciting stuff.
Anthony, don’t forget to turn your leashes (laptop, cellphone etc) off for at least a week. Two might be better. (I suspect you won’t actually do that till after a week.)
You’ve left WUWT in good hands.
Charles is awesome. For those that don’t know. Steven Mosher’s room-mate at one time but a crucial part of WUWT for a long time.
But Anthony will be back because this is his calling. Everyone needs a break every now and again but no one has done more for factual science than Anthony has and when the battery is recharged, the calling will call him back.
It’s not like he isn’t reading this every few hours. Charles is very welcome to plug in the recharger while it is needed.
CTM, just sent by private back channel the first of several technical possible posts. Am going to ‘Red Team’ them all. Thanks for taking over in AW absence. You and he will not be disappointed.
Now if the “97% consensus” would just take an extended vacation.
What if everybody just told the IPCC that we believe everything that they have ever said and so they need say no more. We got the message. Their mission is fulfilled. Would they shut up then, or would they just find another agenda to match their acronym? — IPCC (International Panel for Cup Cakes) — they become an organization for bakers. … IPCC (Innovative Perspectives Concerning Comedy) — they become an organization for comedians. … IPCC (Illogical People Constantly Complaining) — they become a rich-boy fraternity just for the hell of complaining about anything. … IPCC (Inventors of some Pretty Convincing Crap) — they stay who they are, just because they like what they do, no matter how stupid it starts to get.
Robert, they’ll switch to GMOs:
IPBB (intergovernmental panel on bumble bees)
Maybe I missed something, but whatever happened to Bob Tisdale?
CTM,
Good on ya, mayt!
300 Baud, Tymenet and Compu$erve. Those were the days. Unix to Unix copy program; each Unix would dial its neighbors and send email along a “bang path”. It took a very long time and delivery was considerably less assured. Blogs are the new DBBS/RBBS.
