Giant Ice Sculpture On National Mall to Symbolize the Melting Away of Climate Denialism

WASHINGTON–On Saturday morning, 350.org will unveil a giant sculpture on the National Mall—the word “HOAX?” carved in ice. Given the forecast for highs in the 100s, it will not last long, but organizers say that is the point: it will disappear like the arguments have from climate deniers.

For years, scientists have predicted that increased concentrations of CO2 and other greenhouse gases would lead to more intense heat waves, increased drought, massive wildfires, and more powerful storms. In June, 3,215 daily high temperature records were set; and so far this year, more than 2.1 million acres have burned in wildfires. Today was the 9th straight day in the nation’s capital that has met or exceeded 95 degrees.

News accounts estimated that half of the incoming Republican House class in 2010 denied the existence of man-made climate change. In 2010, Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) mocked climate activist with an igloo display not far from the ice sculpture that will be unveiled tomorrow. Recent events–as well as the findings of every major scientific academy in the world–disprove the viewpoint of climate deniers in Congress.

WHAT: A 6-by-12 foot ice sculpture spelling out “HOAX?,” with the Capitol Dome in the background.

WHERE: East side of 3rd St NW, by the Capitol Reflecting Pool.

WHEN: 11AM Saturday, until the sculpture melts. (Set up time is from 10-11am)

WHO: 350.org is displaying the installation. 350.org policy director Jason Kowalski will be availalble to answer questions and do interviews.

###

Photos will be available shortly after the unveiling at www.flickr.com/350org

Let’s see, a 6×12 foot ice sculpture….that’s a lot of ice. Care to take bets on how long it will last? I’m thinking at least until sunset. Forecast for Washington DC tomorrow says:

High 106° Low 84° – this isn’t much different than Dr. Jim Hansen picking a hot Washington day in June 1988 to disable the air conditioning while he addressed the Senate over his global warming concerns. Props…gotta have props.

Dr. James Hansen is getting ready to testify before the Senate on what he thinks is a serious problem, global warming. The sponsor for Dr. Hansen? Senator Tim Wirth.

Dr. James Hansen testifies on global warming, June 1988

If any of you have ever been in Washington DC during the summertime, you’ll be able to relate to this. Senator Timothy Wirth made sure that room was “steamy”. This transcript excerpt is from PBS series Frontline which aired a special in April 2007.

So it goes without saying, that if the case Dr. Hansen was to make before the Senate was so strong, why did Senator Wirth need to make use of cheap stage tricks?

Here he admits his stagecraft in his own words:

TIMOTHY WIRTH: We called the Weather Bureau and found out what historically was the hottest day of the summer. Well, it was June 6th or June 9th or whatever it was. So we scheduled the hearing that day, and bingo, it was the hottest day on record in Washington, or close to it.

DEBORAH AMOS: [on camera] Did you also alter the temperature in the hearing room that day?

TIMOTHY WIRTH: What we did is that we went in the night before and opened all the windows, I will admit, right, so that the air conditioning wasn’t working inside the room. And so when the- when the hearing occurred, there was not only bliss, which is television cameras and double figures, but it was really hot.[Shot of witnesses at hearing]

Watch the Frontline video:

UPDATE: Joe Bastardi suggests this graphic is relevant to Hansen’s 1988 testimony to illustrate how warming has stalled:

Interestingly, while the media blames the current heatwave on Global Warming, we are seeing some of the most active solar flares in quite some time happening this week.
http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-205_162-57466468/sun-fires-off-fourth-of-july-solar-flares/
CO2 hasn’t dramitically gone up this past week, has it????
The Sun Heats up at the same time as the Earth Heats up.
Coincidence????
Hopefully somebody out there is watching the Sun instead of just CO2.

I wonder how they carved it. Chainsaw? Gas powered or electric? Or did they daintily chip away at it with stone cutting tools and rock hammers? And, by the way, where precisely did they get that ice. I’d be surprised if they used any form of refrigeration – how very unecological. They must’ve acquired it from an iceberg in the North Sea, sailed it on a log water raft oars a rowing, and then wheeled it pushed and pulled by sturdy volunteers all the while keeping that ice from melting by…

Are they really this ignorant? (I know, it’s rhetorical) The ranks of us D-worders are rather the opposite of melting away. Just like Antarctic ice, we’re growing every year. Had already had enough of arrogant little twirps today, and I come home to this. SIgh.

What exactly are they claiming deniers deny? This language is such a smokescreen. We need to put that straight and get the whole debate re-framed per the genuine one going on away from the media’s absurd oversimplification: There is, as I understand it, little controversy about a 1C uptick in temp from a doubling of C02; no controversy that we will have done that by 2100, and no controversy that this is not a threat. The ‘deniers’ are only asking for proof that this 1C will trigger runaway positive feedbacks, and the is PLENTY of controversy about whether that is likely. Can’t the ‘denier’ spokespeople get this message across plainly? So much wasted hot air, as it were, over this straw man thing about people denying warming or denying C02 causes it or denying we are adding C02… let’s cut to the chase.

Hmm, how long will it last Mr Watts? Hmm, well, it’s DC, it’s hot, it will probably have a direct hit from the sun, then the asphalt it will be parked on will also store some nice heat. Taking summers I’ve experienced in many cities on different continents into account… I’d say gone within a week, easily.

The best part is after this little weekend of heat, the highs drop to the mid 80s (with fog on Tuesday?). Sen. Inhofe just needs to step out on Tuesday and make his comment. Not shocking, but, wow… all that money to 350.org and not a competent one in the lot.

July 6, 2012 2:23 pm

It’s important to keep perspective on temperatures. Temps have stalled over the last decade +, but we still are in theory recovering from the Little Ice Age, so it is natural for temps to rise. Rising temps are not a sign of AGW!
What is important is that, with the hockey stick debunked, current temps are not unusual. There is nothing wrong with the climate, it’s that simple. Further, the climate is arguably not affected by CO2. AGW theory was founded by the false ipcc claim of a causal correlation between CO2 & temps; that has been debunked. But maybe 98% of the public doesn’t know that the ipcc duped all of us on CO2; this 3 minute video makes that clear, spread the word: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK_WyvfcJyg

When the ice “hoax” photos emerge, WUWT readers with blogs should consider “counter-branding” this PR event by saying the “hoax” that is melting is CAGW fanaticism.
Folks could have a lot of fun with alternate messaging slogans, photo-shopping in polar bears, Michael Mann and climate scientologists (sic) on the Washington Mall, etc. I’m sure some here can think of really juicy ways to make this backfire on the CAGW propagandists….

As the event is in DC how about we reduce the urban heat effect and create shovel ready jobs all in one- remove all the asphalt around DC and put in concrete instead. In order to provide jobs for Florida we could even require that some crushed sea shells to be added into the concrete to increase the reflectivity of the new road surfaces.

So this is what Wirth is up to now. Not only is he heading a UN Foundation involved in pushing sustainable energy, he is on board with the New Economics Institute. NEI is the renamed Schumacher Society in honor of Mr Small is Beautiful.
https://neweconomicsinstitute.org/people/timothy-e-wirth
I am just shocked to see he was a senior Ed Secretary under Nixon. What a good place to hatch an ideological agenda and get it implemented without detection.
NEI is allied with the new economics foundation that is causing so much mischief in the UK.
Melting ice does appeal to the generation being educated to feel and see instead of think.

From a PR perspective this could really be made to backfire upon them, with the right “messaging” in response. Getting millions of people to associate the word “hoax” with climate and hot weather themes can be turned against the CAGWarmists. They can be ridiculed, cartooned and lampooned, shown as Algore-like in their alarmism and exaggerations etc.
C’mon folks, if we start “crowd sourcing” good responses here I’ll bet we can really make this propaganda event backfire on them….. I’m working on it (ideas I mean).

These AGW alarmists-turned-activists are putting their foolishness on display. They’ve obviously fallen head-over-heels in love with the global warming fairy tale. When the climate finally turns cold — and we’re seeing evidence that earth may be moving towards a long-term cool-down — the love affair is going to end in a bitter divorce. By then, will we have enough coal-fired power-generating capacity to keep us warm?
I don’t know whether to fear or feel sorry for the people promoting the global warming insanity. How does one respond to AGW Disciples who willing refuse to acknowledge any scientific fact that runs counter to their deeply held beliefs? It’s impossible to reason with such close-mindedness.

How was it transported and stored?
349.231 General
“Dry ice is primarily used to keep other items cool. The items being cooled can be either mailable hazardous materials or nonhazardous items, such as medical specimens or foods.
349.232 Characteristics and Precautions
Dry ice (carbon dioxide solid) is produced by expanding liquid carbon dioxide to vapor and compacting the material into blocks. When dry ice converts (dissipates) to a gaseous form, it takes in heat from its surroundings. The resulting gas is heavier than air and can cause suffocation in confined areas as air is displaced. When dry ice is enclosed in a thick metal or other restrictive type of container, internal pressure builds up and could cause the container to rupture or explode. Mailpieces containing dry ice must be handled with care because its very low temperature (about –110° F
or –79° C) can cause severe burns to skin upon direct contact.

Not until people all over the West get a better sense of how much UN officials, politicians, and hangers on like Wirth think they can use education and UNESCO cultural initiatives to try to change the filtering mindset of the Typical student while they are still malleable. By the way, that’s about 15 as their reports and research mention endlessly. It’s in fact why the IB Middle Years Programme was developed. Get at the affective orientation in those key years.
Here’s a quote from something I was working on today that is getting pushed subtly all over the world with endorsements from figures like the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu and Jane Goodall that kids and teens admire.
“By highlighting our interconnection with our Mother Earth, partnership education fosters ecological consciousness.”
It is really hard to see a values and social and emotional reorientation unless you know it is there. But it has been ratcheting into education all over the world in order to try to be the guiding light that drives behavior. These are kids who are being trained to weep for Gaia. They are also being taught it is their obligation to take action.
And it is not just the nonsense they have been taught. It is creating the habit that the engrained reflexive response is from emotion.

There again, maybe Pachauri has had it chipped off one of his glaciers and had it flown over as part of his new “best science” initiative for direct action.

Well, I marked my calendar to make sure I don’t go anywhere near…
Then I was thinking. With all of that heat and those poor tourists struggling from museum to museum, maybe I should hand out ice picks. So much ice going to waste and so many people needing a chunk to slurp.
Maybe the gleick water con guy will also show up to protest wasting water?
If ice picks are available, I’d give the ice a couple of hours. No picks and the ice will likely last into the night. Large chunks of ice take time to melt. Of course, there is always a chance of a thunderstorm, a lot of water could make the process quicker.
It’s a shame the Minnesotans foor global warming silliness aren’t making an appearance (and film) for more of their wonderful satire. Maybe set up a snow cone ice shaver?

Boy, they sure are picking a good day to do it with the record breaking heat and all.

The all-time high for DC is 106F, set in July 1930. I wonder what CO2 levels were then?

Dear Septical,
I’ve just watched a video on Youtube featuring Senator Tim Wirth where he admits in his own words to arranging for Hansen’s testimony to be heard on a hot day and also ensuring that the AC would not be effective by leaving the windows open all night.
I know Warmists rely on heavily on self deception in order to maintain the Faith but in this case… which part of the evidence of your own eyes and ears do you not believe?
I suspect you maybe have a fetish ‘with’ Global Warming?

Just a small point but how or where did they get the power for the freezer to make the ice?
Just wondering………..
I hope it was wonderful green electricity not that nasty dirty black stuff that comes from coal…………..
ERR how do you tell the colour of electricity?
It always seems to be bright white/blue flashes to me.

Dear Charles Elson
Mr. Watts clearly says Dr. Hansen picked the day of the hearing and shut off the AC which is what I was commenting about. As you state, the video you watched clearly contradicts this as Sen. Wirth clearly takes credit himself. This would seem to be yet another incident where claims made are unsupported by sources provided but yet you bought into the claim without question.

Greg House says: Moderate warmism based on belief in the radical warmists’ (unproven) claims with a small exception about the consequences is in fact a very weak position, because the opposite claims like “but it is not dangerous” can hardly improve the situation.

Thanks, KimG. I went to 350.org and they didn’t cancel because of the heat. (There goes my theory that someone had two brain cells to clang together.) They cancelled because they might hurt someone’s feelings – in West Virginia, or maybe it was to protect ickle birdies; I’m not clear on that.
Anyway, I’d recommend a visit to read the cancellation notice and comments. It’s pretty much a fact-free site so there’s no danger there. BTW, I still can’t figure out just exactly who is a ‘climate denier.’ I’m still waiting to run across that first person to claim, “There is no climate.”

ha haaaa too bad, they’ve cancelled the melting event…… Bill McKibben says it’s because after feedback from some fellow activists he realized the melting ice could make people sweltering in the heat feel “disrespected”…..
Let’s get past the activist psycho-babble and say: These fanatics suddenly realized the myriad ways in which this event could backfire on them, big-time.
Hope we didn’t tip them off too much on this thread! Given the hype of the event, the fundraising in its name, and the last-moment cancellation, 350.org is even more open to mockery and blog ridicule, even if their ice did not get to the melting point.
btw, knowing something of logistics and ice sculpture, the “Hoax” icework must exist somewhere…. some enterprising journalists should find out what they are doing with it now that this money has been wasted ($5,000 they say, not a big sum in the enviro world but a good chunk of bucks to most of us ordinary folk). Maybe they will announce a different event with ice cubes provided for their supporters who show up. That’s an awful lot of ice, though….

The site at this link is merely an example, I have no idea who they might have used, but it was almost certainly a professional company that specializes in creating large iceworks for corporate and public events. These are not home productions, especially not in the DC area outside of winter. Somewhere in the DC area there is surely a company with that huge ‘HOAX’ icework chilling in its huge freezers (unless 350.org has already rushed to have them alter or dispose of the thing):
http://www.hoticeinc.com/page1.htm
These things don’t get made the morning of an event. It would be ‘interesting’ to mock McKibben and 350.org for the disposal of so much expensive ice. [Maybe they will now donate bags of ice to the poor….they need to try to spin this fiasco in some positive way… but what an inefficient (!!) way to go about doing so.]

John, you’d better start with questioning the core statements of the AGW concept, then you will possibly discover that on the one hand the warmists can not present any experiment proving the claimed CO2 warming capability except for fakes and unrelated stuff and on the other hand that that notion has been experimentally debunked long ago.
You can also start with the “doubling of C02 causing a 1C temp rise”, then you will discover that they use in their calculations certain value called “CO2 forcing” that they can not account for. They usually refer to the IPCC (!) to justify that. If you dig deeper you might find out that this thing comes out of a climate model. No physical proof again.

Thanks again Greg! Can you link me to info on the debunking? A number of characters on ‘our’ side (e.g. Monckton, Meyers) keep citing that C02’s tendency to insulate/heat was proven in the 19th century and is beyond doubt. Would love to clear that one up, IPCC coefficients etc notwithstanding.

Here you are: http://www.wmconnolley.org.uk/sci/wood_rw.1909.html .
To “C02′s tendency to insulate/heat was proven in the 19th century and is beyond doubt”, they only have an experiment of John Tyndall from 1859 about capability of CO2 and other gases to absorb and re-emit IR radiation. That gave back then Tyndall, Arrhenius and others a reason to believe that CO2 would trapp IR and produce warming exactly like the glass in a greenhouse does. Unfortunately, they did not bother to verify that claim about glass nor their claim about CO2. The whole thing was just a misconception. Tyndall also believed for a while in “cold radiation” causing cooling, by the way.

Appreciate this, Greg. I see there is some contention about the C02 based on this 1909 experiment. It appears, interestingly, however, not to be a point on which skeptics are united, and I wonder why. If it is in serious doubt perhaps contemporary experiments to prove the greenhouse theory or not should be being undertaken. Too big a question to be left un-addressed at this stage, it would seem, no?

Skiphil~ Another good point about all that ice- that water could have been used to take care of some of the poor in Washington D.C. You’d think that these activists, who believe in the scarcity of fresh water, would want to reserve it for those who actually Need it, rather than letting it go to waste on the pavement.

From the update from 350.org, explaining that their friends in West Virginia were unhappy with the idea:
Bob Kincaid, at Coal River Mountain Watch, said: “Our work in Appalachia is hard enough as it is, since we must ever contend with the well-funded coal industry PR machine.”
Does it really take a PR machine to convince West Virginians that destroying their state’s biggest industry is a bad idea?

My guess is a lot of people do not know about the Wood’s experiment, others are unable or unwilling to connect the dots. And many so called skeptics are in fact skeptical only in a very limited way, that is why I prefer the technical term “warmists”.
As for contemporary experiments, recently on another thread I humbly asked warmists to present something genuine: http://wattsupwiththat.com/2012/06/22/a-response-to-dr-paul-bains-use-of-denier-in-scientific-literature/ .

I’m still waiting for the supporters of Earth Day to thank Mother Nature for doing what Man has been unable to do – shut off all their electricity for longer than one hour in March.
Why aren’t they posting full page ads, proclaiming how much better off mankind is, now that large cities are powerless?
Remember their early statements?
“…At 8:30 PM Saturday, some of the world’s most famous landmarks will go dark for Earth Hour 2012. From the Empire State Building to the Great Wall of China, non-essential lighting will be turned off at important locations around the globe.
Earth Hour, a global initiative led by World Wildlife Fund, encourages individuals around the world to shut off their lights on Saturday March 31 for one hour, beginning at 8:30 PM in each time zone…”
Wanting us to turn off non essential lighting, and having Washington DC going dark for several days. Strange irony there…
