Our own CTM is a "nasty cruel man"

Heh, gaze upon the face that launched a thousand quips.

Charles the Moderator

I figured though, that I owed Dellers a linky for the big LOL I got this morning as I read that CTM gets press in the UK Telegraph for his recent WUWT article.

The figures refer to the number of “views” for Gore’s special “24 Hours Of ManBearPig” which this column helped celebrate the other day. Gore claims that as many as 8.6 million flocked to his thrilling festival of climate fear; but a nasty cruel man called Charles the Moderator at Watts Up With That? has “done the math” and reckons the figure is probably more like 17,000. And that, he believes, is a generous estimate.

You are all wicked wicked people who will get your just deserts for making fun of a holy and wondrous man. I believe by buying beach front properties he has by his saintly faith managed to lower the sea level, if not walk on it. His vast fortune made from climate change is a signal from the Universe that he is correct in his blessings and it his said that he can even make the USA rugby team capable of winning a match in the world cup. ( Ok Ok that may be a real miracle, but you get my drift)

What CTM failed to appreciate is that if you consider the 17000 ‘attendees’ as a proxy for climate interest, and carry out a statistical assessment using ‘Mannian’ theories, it is clear that the rate of ‘attendees’ was spiking up sharply during the last few minutes of the 24 hours, having flatlined for the previous 23 and a bit hours. Clearly CTM ignored the possibility that this ‘hockey stick’ response meant that, with high certainty, there were going to be 8.6 million ‘attendees’ by the end of hour 25. Jeez, some people just don’t understand stats, do they?
This ‘rebuttle’ was drafted, peer-reviewed (by myself), and ‘OK’d’ by a randomly selected editior teetering on the brink of resignation all within 8 minutes 32 seconds. Now move along folks, nothing to see here!

The European Union maps also frequently miss out on showing Anglesey, The Isle of Wight and Isle of Man in European maps. Does that mean they don’t believe we exist? Just because we are friends with Father Christmas and his Elves who love our little islands the mapmakers have taken the humph. Can we have lots of the same loot given to tropical islands?

Even if the numbers presented by Al Gore was accurate, and I don’t think they are, how does one count “a viewer”? I clicked on the page, but after 10 seconds of this hogwash, left. Yes, I could be counted as “a viewer”, but I didn’t stay to watch. Would Nelson give a rating based on a 10 second view OR would they want the person to stay for a longer time? We could debate the time, but I think a real viewer stays for a lot longer than 10 seconds. I wonder how may “viewers” were very short term surfers? I also wonder how many viewers came there from WUWT?

Dang, and here I thought the funniest part of the day was this morning.
ABC’s Good Morning America, the 7AM EDT news update. They were warning about the falling satellite. The presenter was at their large monitor screen, showing some images, then showed a calendar with the Thurs-Sat block colored red, saying how the breakup and crash was expected Friday.
They were highlighting September 15 to 17.
How many graphic designers, editors, and producers did that get through, including the presenter dude and the rest of the on-air crew who didn’t comment, without noticing they had highlighted last week?
*sigh* GMA, produced by the ABC News Division. Yup, that sure inspires confidence in their accuracy. And how much longer until they trot out their trusted nuclear/earthquake/tsunami/global warming/(fill-in-blank) expert Michio Kaku again? Could he comment on the Gore-a-thon numbers? Maybe explain how the “missing viewers” were in the deep ocean and will reappear later?

I was one of those who stayed for over 5 minutes.
A video they had justified the case for global warming by re-doing the CO2 in a jar experiment – very nicely as well. Only they did not say what the concentrations were compared to the atmosphere (probably >1000 times the 0.04% at the moment).
Then in the space of a sentence mentioned feedbacks amplifying the effect.
So of the predicted warming up to 6 degrees centigrade this century predicted by the most extreme alarmists, Al Gore’s little video had a flawed experiment to justify the insignificant first 20%, and a “trust the computer models” for the alarming bit.
Don’t take my word for it – I am just a (slightly) manic beancounter. Check out for yourself at http://climaterealityproject.org/video/climate-101/

years ago, when mr. So it is a big joy and relieve that besides proper science there’s also still common sense and good intuition to go by – you don’t need to study the figures to realize the scam – but still sad to see so many people and organizations being impressed by a publicity stuntman – so I wonder where is the real culprit, is it mr. AG(W) or is it “mass hysteria”?

There are a lot of sites picking up pieces from your article and running James Delingpole’s piece but they’ve dropped “dedicated” viewers from 17,000.
DID AL GORE REALLY GET 8.6 MILLION VIEWS ON HIS 24-HOUR GLOBAL WARMING SPECIAL?
source: http://www.theblaze.com/stories/did-al-gore-really-get-8-6-million-views-on-his-24-hour-global-warming-special/
“Gore’s site claimed the Sept. 15 marathon live-stream received 8.6 million views. That number, Climate Reality Project President Maggie Fox said, is the number of clicks the show had received by the time the event wrapped up — not people tuning in to re-watch clips after it was over.

I think I know where the number really comes from. It’s from the tracking id in their spam bot, so what it likely represents is the number of times an announcement appeared in the Facebook news feeds and was ignored for the spam that it was.
