"Justice has been done" – UPDATE: Osama Bin Laden compound found on Google Earth

That quote from president Obama tonight. The story here

“Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet” – Afghan proverb

UPDATE #3: Zeroing in on the compound. Threes a charm. Like anything in the fog of war, early reports can be erroneous. The first two seemed plausible, especially the second one with the high walls. Now the official Google Earth Blog weighs in:

[UPDATE: The location has essentially been confirmed by the BBC

(via Ogle Earth).] You can fly there with this KML file or view the image below:

The Pentagon has released this photo, which matches:

A powerpoint from the Pentagon is here (PDF) which shows the details.

UPDATE: I have the compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan mapped on Google Earth below:

Lat/Lon  34.146371°  73.216925°  Google Maps  It sure looks like a fortress. I’m betting they special forces landed the copters in the field to the east, near the blue roofed building, which is the Government Post Graduate College No.1 Another view here

UPDATE2: The Atlantic’s story was wrong, here is the (likely) correct location:

Lat/lon 34.187663° 73.242617° See it on Google Maps

Here it is with the PMA Kakul Military academy mentioned in news reports h/t to Ryan Maue:

Wikipedia has already made an update about the PMA Kakul Military academy:

In May 2011, the US military conducted a raid and killed Osama bin Laden in a compound less than 1 km from Burn Hall Army Academy in Abbottabad. Burn Hall is a junior academy that feeds the Pakistan Military Academy. Bin Laden’s extended refuge near the academy is cited as evidence of the Pakistani government’s collusion with al Qaeda.

That places the compound back near the city center where we originally placed it from reports by The Atlantic. The compound originally identified din’t quite match the news reports.(see image below).

The imagery of the compound above described as “very high walled” matches the image of the white building and the tall white walls around it. I also just saw some helmet cam video of the scene in flames, and the white walls were visible.

The Google added red pointer location for OBL’s compound Abottabad in their database in the images above was originally near the city center, See below for the original placment Google had. But the pointer lat/lon has been updated within the last hour to the new location near PMA Kakul shown above. I think the locations above are correct, as they match news accounts much better.

I am glad that Uncle Sam finally nailed that little maggot.
I also think that Pakistan has some explaining to do if they are going to try and claim that their ISI did not know about this.

Keith, this is a war, not a police raid to go and arrest someone for selling some weed out of their back door. In wars, the enemy is killed because they are the enemy, not because a jury takes a year to look at the evidence and then gives the soldiers permission to open fire. An enemy was terminated. End of story.

Barak Obama said
Evil Osama’s
Bin Laden
With lots of hot lead
He was hiding from harm
Back in old Pakistan
But now they have found him
He’s dead.
Thank you to all those responsible.

Muslim practice calls for the body to be buried within 24 hours. An assumption is that Saudi Arabia, where his family lives, won’t accept the body. U.S. officials said bin Laden was buried at sea.

Is there a photo or video of him dead?

May 2, 2011 3:49 am

In the spirit of Christian charity, I have deleted all the nasty things I was going to post here.
Since it was an American operation in a sovereign foreign nation, I wonder if the raid were conducted with the acquiescence of the Pakistani government. It is a shame they didn’t capture him, but good enough, since he was apparently still giving orders and making plans from the compound.

I’d rather trust the late Benazir Bhutto’s declaration ( @→ 2:12) that he was already dead then (2007).
In light of Obama’s long-withheld and evidently-fake birth-certificate (see eg, ), this could well be a follow-up fraud to rescue his credulity.
— it looks like all the evidence has been disposed-of.

Hotrod (larry L) “He issued a formal written declaration of war against the U.S. and all our allies in 1998,….. He started it.”
Get your history right !
The First World War started in 630 AD.
It’s in the Book!

Something has nobbled Dr Roy Spencer’s daily global temperature updates over at http://discover.itsc.uah.edu/a
I haven’t been able to reach it for several days. Anyone else noticed?
Sorry Anthony and hard-working Moderators, I tried to put this in “Tips and Notes” but for some reason the “Leave a Reply” section is missing on that page.

So, essentially, Pakistani ISI “found him” and gave him up, just like that?
The postmortem, yes I’m that naive, will later show that old bin Laden died from natural causes, called old age and happily self detonation, which was why Pakistani ISI so easily, with out further adou, thought: Ah, what the hell, let the retiree marines have ‘im before they crook of old age too.
A second edition will probably tell the tale of how old bin Laden died years ago when he, in his old age (a terrorist year being, what, 10 to a peaceful human year) when he became an overly smarty pant after getting out from the american smart guns, his pride then, filled to bursting, he happily self detonated, much to the surprise of his number two, the terrorist turd, whom, incidentally, couldn’t tell anyone since nobody liked the crappy smell from him anyhow, and always made nasty fun of him (which gave him a psycho idea.)
Hidden in the attic, in the darkest corner under the most mysterious of nook and twisted crannies, there be old bin Laden, hold together in a silvery shine of somebody having gone apeshit with the duct tape, seated upon a poorly makeshift . . . swing, swinging for his crazed minion, smelly number two, as the first, and only, Zombie. Terrorist. Mother of all Kings.
During dark and rainy nights, (what, like two during the last ten years), if one had but an ear to the chimney, one could have heard the hissing prayer deep within, in that dark corner under that mysterious nook and twisted crannies: Yesss mother, my preciousss.

Scottish Sceptic – you do an injustice to sceptics everywhere. Most of the 100,000 were killed by fellow muslims in post invasion terror attacks.
Sad though each death is, the number of deaths directly linked to the invasion is relatively low.

It is bad to rejoice in anyone’s death.
But in this case I will make an exception.
IF he really is dead.
And if he wasn’t already dead, as Benazir Bhutto claimed years ago.
But much better evidence than an obviously photoshopped photograph is urgently needed.
Without that, the conspiracy theorists will be doing cartwheels and bouncing off the walls.

One cockroach down, 10 million to go.

May 2, 2011 4:33 am

Excuse me for remaining skeptical.
Buried at sea in a hurry? That’s a giveaway.
We don’t know if this was bin Laden.
We don’t know if bin Laden was killed.
We don’t know if bin Laden was still alive.
As in the case of the notarized copy of a birth certificate, there is no independent verification of the basic facts.
Barak Hussein Obama desperately needs something — anything — that would raise his sinking popularity. Give me one good reason why I should trust that professional liar and his minions.

How’s this for weird? Yesterday I was just thinking that Osama will die soon. First time for a while I have thought about it, the thing just popped into my head.
I know it’s a coincidence, but it’s a funny one. Oh and good job on killing that murderous psycho. Now if only Obama or rest of NATO would have the political will to do the same to Gaddafi, perhaps the other tyrants who are busy slaughtering their civilians would think twice.

yes, funny how that works…after the fact. Imagine how much more credible it would have sounded if you had said it before it happened.

I don’t think that’s the location. Reports say the mansion was constructed in 2005, and that imagery is from March, 2001 — before it was built.

Justice? Not if he gets to heaven as a martyr and is introduced to 73 virgins. Better to have wrapped his head in bacon and placed a football signed by the NY Giants in his hands. According to Islamic traditions, that would keep him out of Islamic heaven.

@hotrod: Great news he’s dead, the (civilized) world will be celebrating, but on your point about war, if you’re right why aren’t the prisoners treated according to the Geneva Convention.

Brian,
They are. Check out the section about combatants not in uniform.

What hotrod (Larry L) said, May 1, 2011 at 11:59 pm.
OBL declared war on the United States. He got off easy. I’d like to have seen his head sawed off, as his minions did to their victims.
I hope they wrapped him in pigskin before dumping him in the ocean.

@hotrod: Great news he’s dead, the (civilized) world will be celebrating, but on your point about war, if you’re right why aren’t the prisoners treated according to the Geneva Convention.

The Geneva Conventions applies to combatants fighting under the flag of a sovereign nation that is a signatory to the convention. Obviously al-Qaida is neither a sovereign nor a signatory to the convention.
Moreover even if the above conditions are met individual combatants must meet some tests in order to be treated as protected prisoners of war. Among these tests are carrying arms openly and to be somehow distinguishable at a distance from non-combatants. In the usual sense this means they are uniformed combatants where the uniform serves to distinguish them from non-combatants at a distance.

So Osama Bin Laden is dead. Amazing what the Americans can do when the Playstation Network is down.

May 2, 2011 5:18 am

I can’t help but think Bin Laden’s life in exchange for all that precious American blood was a poor trade. Don’t get me wrong…I’m glad he’s assumed room temperature, but I get the feeling that this whole thing is far from over.
