The 10:10 Splattergate goes "sploot" – a roundup

From cartoonist Marc Roberts, via Andy Revkin:

We await Josh.

A new apology today from 10:10’s director, to replace the half-witted first one. [Game show buzzer sounds] too little, too late.

Statement by Eugenie Harvey, Director of 10:10 UK

Last week, 10:10 made available a short film. Following the initial reaction to the film we removed it from our website and issued an apology on Friday 2 October.

Subsequently there has been negative comment about the film, particularly on blogs, and concern from others working hard to build support for action on climate change. We are very sorry if this has distracted from their efforts.

We are also sorry to our corporate sponsors, delivery partners and board members, who have been implicated in this situation despite having no involvement in the film’s production or release.

We will learn from this mistake. Today I have written to supporters and stakeholders explaining that we will review processes and procedures to make sure it cannot happen again. Responsibility for this process is being taken by the 10:10 board.

The media coverage of the film was not the kind of publicity we wanted for 10:10, nor for the wider movement to reduce carbon emissions.

If people have been in touch with us personally about the film, we will be replying to individual emails over the next few days. Meanwhile our thanks go out to all those who support 10:10 and who work to combat the threat of climate change.

Eugenie Harvey

Director, 10:10 UK

NYT’s Andrew Revkin says:

If the goal had been to convince people that environmental campaigners have lost their minds and to provide red meat (literally) to shock radio hosts and  pundits fighting curbs on greenhouse gases, it worked like a charm. Of course the goal might have been buzz more than efficacy. Too often these days, that’s the online norm. They succeeded on that front. I, among many others, am forced to write about it. Congratulations.

I’d like to see the group’s sponsors, including Sony, figure out an upside to this effort. They should either state why they continue to provide support or pull out.

Ask and ye shall receive, WUWT commenter Katabasis notes:

Official response from Sony:

“Thank you for your email concerning the video released by the 10:10 climate change campaign group. Sony has supported the 10:10 climate change campaign because we share its objective to reduce carbon emissions. However, we strongly condemn the “No Pressure” video which was conceived, produced and released by 10:10 entirely without the knowledge or involvement of Sony. The company considers the video to be ill-conceived and in extremely bad taste. We also believe the video risks undermining the work of the many thousands of members of the public, schools and universities, local authorities and many businesses, of which Sony is one, who support the long-term aims of the 10:10 movement and who are actively working towards the reduction of carbon emissions.

As a result we have taken the decision to disassociate ourselves from 10:10 at this time.

In our press statement we will be posting tomorrow morning we reaffirm our ongoing commitment to the reduction of global carbon emissions as part of our ‘Road to Zero’ environmental plan.”

Paul Chesser at the American Spectator writes:

It looks like Sony and Kyocera Mita have demanded their removal from all associations with the extremist climate group 10:10.org, which produced that exploding schoolchildren video last week. The corporations’ names have been removed from the list of partners, and a lengthy post by Sony’s point-person on climate change, Naomi Climer, has been deleted from the 10:10 site.

Not only that, but a huge U.S. environmentalist promoter and partner, 350.org (headed by Bill McKibben), is no longer listed as an organizational partner. Both 10:10 and 350 have been heavily promoting an October 10 (10/10/10) “global workday” to supposedly bring fresh attention to the global warming threat. The message from 350.org’s press shop:

We respect 10:10’s previous work to encourage companies, schools, and churches to voluntarily cut their carbon emissions 10%. Upon seeing the video, however, we have informed 10:10 that we can no longer remain partners on 10/10/10 or any other initiative. 350.org maintains an absolute commitment to nonviolence in word and deed.

Ow, that’s gotta hurt.

This from the article suggests that the 10:10 blunder has sucked all the online oxygen out of the environmental movement:

A YouTube repost (of the 10:10 video) by a third party Thursday got more than 149,000 views over the weekend and elicited more than 2,300 comments. Several other versions have topped 100,000 views, as well.

A Sierra Club video featuring a National Football League player warning that coal ash is a health threat to children got 95 YouTube views during the same interval.

And speaking of oxygen, the list of sponsors dwindles, and then there was one:

O2 is the only sponsor holdout thus far, we’ll see how long that lasts.

Post your updates and latest tips below, and I’ll include important ones here in the body of the post.

“If carbon dioxide is so harmless why don’t you stand in a garage with the doors closed and your car engine running!”
========================================================
Note that it was the carbon MONoxide, not CO2, in the auto exhaust that killed people. I say “was” because there was a Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) paper a fews years ago (SAE Paper 922335″ Unanticipated Benefits of Automotive Emission Control: Reduction of Fatalities by Motor Vehicle Exhaust) that showed it was getting harder and harder to kill yourself using a modern car running in closed garage. So to the warmist you reply “It is carbon monoxide that kills, not CO2.”

“We can’t be the only ones that know this!”
We aren’t the only ones. Sadly, many people in power are being influenced/bought in order to sell this crap. The media included. Expected corruption is the first indication of a fascist government. We would all be doomed if it wasn’t for the internet that allows for a relatively free exchange. Imagine the world if there had been the internet before Hitler or the Soviets. “Cutting our carbon 10% a year, starting in 2010.” What happens after year ten?
What happens to Sony after year 2050, when they have achieved their goal of “Road to Zero”? If it’s so good, why don’t they cut now?

In this instance, it fits quite well. The parallels to the dehumanizing propaganda are very alarming. I always felt the use of the D word was a bit of projection, now, thanks to 10:10, I see that my instincts were quite correct.
A thought, was it 10% of the people shown blown to bits? I haven’t done a head count.

Dug out the dog eared Northrop Frye. Looks like what we have here in terms of plot is 6th phase satire characterised by, well, unrelieved horror. In terms of genre it is of course drama, but in a very ancient form – the satyr play. This reminds me of my favourite quote from Fryes Anatomy of Criticism:
“Perhaps we could make more dramatic sense out of Titus Andronicus if we could see it as an unharrowed hell, a satyr- play of obscene and gibbering demons.”
Apparently Franny and her crew see Western Society as something like “an unharrowed hell, a satyr- play of obscene and gibbering demons”

Oh, but there’s more … what you have seen (so far!) is “Sorry One” (circa Oct. 1) and “Sorry Two – Take 1” (undated). Eugenie Harvey has now provided “Sorry Two – Take 2” (Oct. 4).
But somehow, I cannot imagine that any number of sorries will succeed in wiping the stain of Franny’s Oct. 1 E-mail to all 10:10-ers:

“It’s a fairly simple and to-the-point premise, I’m sure you’ll agree: we celebrate everybody who is actively tackling climate change… by blowing up those who aren’t.”

Love (of ‘no pressure’) is forever having to say you’re sorry

Now we know exactly how they think, never forget that this 10:10 group amongst many others is also funded by UK Government agencies including the Carbon Trust and the Energy Saving Trust. If these Quangos, (Quasi-autonomous non-governmental organisations), have managements that think like this and have let this outrage happen, they should all be terminated by a government who is trying to save money
This is especially so when one considers the futility of Man-made Climate Control by the reduction of CO2 emissions.

OK Anthony, I’m ready to concede that underneath Curtis’ carefully-crafted appearance of being a blithering warmist idiot lurks, not a sceptic who has perpetrated the journalistic equivalent of the Norsk Hydro raid on the CAGW movement but – unless he’s playing a very hard game indeed – a blithering warmist idiot.
But let’s not forget what Curtis has done for us:
He has perfectly portrayed the coercive, intolerant mindset of the warmies with a clarity they will find extremely difficult to efface, either literally (their “decision” not to seek its removal from Youtube. etc., was merely a bow to the inevitable) or rhetorically.
He has jogged a lot of “social warmies” into questioning their allegiances;
His revelation that warmies can be very nasty people gives many people the social “permission” they may need to become sceptical;
He has added “No Pressure” to the lexicon, as a shorthand for sanctimonious warm-mongering.

So they are only sorry for the effect this has had. They aren’t actually sorry about the content – presumably they can still see no issue with that.

Why are we accepting this? Sony is reaffirming their fealty to a government con game.
We have the clout to stop this. Keep sending those letter telling them in no uncertain terms that dissassociating themselves from one sub-group doesn’t excuse their active participation in the greater con.

It just gets better and better. Climategate was vindication for those of the view that climate science was being tainted by an agenda of advocacy. Splattergate is all about the politics of extremist ideology and how the extremists are marginalizing their cause by their own actions.
I can only hope that the end of the latest “we’re all going to die” scam is nigh.

Here it is. I knew it would be deleted so I saved it as soon as I saw it.
Note that Sony has removed their support for 10:10 which is good. However Sony still have an “ongoing commitment to the reduction of global carbon emissions”, which is bad, because it’s nonsense. Sustainability=Good, Carbon reduction=Nonsense.

Since we first signed up to 10.10 we’ve made good progress in getting to grips with our energy consumption and have initiated a number of things such as low-carbon food options, new policies to reduce business travel and encouraging lower carbon commuting options for employees. In the run-up to October 10 we have a wonderfully energetic and committed bunch of volunteers planning loads of engaging and hopefully inspiring activities at our Weybridge, Basingstoke and Paris offices.
We’re putting a cool videoconferencing and communicator training pod in the office foyers to demonstrate how easy it is to have effective meetings without jumping on a plane. And we’re using our swipe card system to reward people for low carbon travel with a free low carbon lunch in the cafeteria. Staff are even joining a two-hour bike trip round Paris to promote 10:10 and our commitment to reducing Sony’s emissions.
And finally, I can’t wait to see what the giant 10:10 Tags will look like on the front of the office buildings!

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your email, just received. I totally understand your reaction to this video, which was very similar to my own.
Kyocera Mita UK has supported the 10:10 campaign because we share its ambition to reduce carbon emissions. However, we don’t support the “No Pressure” video and are dismayed by the suggestion that we might have been knowing partners in its production; in fact, we had no knowledge of its content until it appeared online. We consider that 10:10 made a grave error of judgement in its choice of creative approach, which is totally at odds with the inclusive and positive attitude that has been the hallmark of its other activities. We understand that 10:10 has acknowledged its mistake, withdrawn the video and issued an apology.
I assure you that we are taking this issue extremely seriously. A formal statement will be issued in due course.
Kind regards

Nice to hope for, but I’m not sure they’re there, yet. Neither do I believe they’ll ever get there… If this 10:10 video did nothing else, it exposed many of the alarmists for what they are… Spin control will engage, and if necessary, and apparently it is, they will throw the 10:10 organization under the bus.

James, I agree with you a lot. I see very plainly the unconscious nastiness as well as the “noble cause”. I met Franny while still a warmist. I see the “we trust the science” attitude that cannot believe in the betrayal of Science that has happened. Franny may not hear me but some may and I still want my call (Mosher’s call too) out there, just for the record.
FREE THE DEBATE
Here are the main science issues (IMHO) again:
* The inflation of warming due to a whole basketful of factors like UHI, corrupting the data and insufficiently or improperly accounted-for.
* The artificial depression of past temperature records due to the very nature of the calibration of proxies, that cannot help but mine for hockey sticks.
*The artificial depression of past CO2 levels due to a whole basketful of factors including the reasons for CO2’s partial escape from ice cores before measurement.
* The city-dwellers’ failure to comprehend the vast mass of the oceans, compared with the tiny mass of the atmosphere, and the oceans’ capacity, following Henry’s Law, to outgas CO2 far in excess of all our emissions, at the tiniest global temperature increase.
* Reluctance to look at what is staring everyone in the face: the Sun and astrophysics: because the measured solar effects, still very inadequately understood, are not large enough to cause the measured temperature changes – although there is correlation.
* The unstated, unrecognized abandonment of Scientific Method, and adoption of models rather than data, again for a whole basketful of reasons.
