The other embarrassing AGW story this week

Of course, the big news this week had to do with the unbelievably vile and stupid video produced by the carbon reduction activist group 10:10 this week. But in its shadow, was another embarrassing news item the you’d think the green crowd would also want to denounce and distance from. Joe Romm and Bill McKibben have announced they detest the 10:10 video. Good for them, that’s the right thing to do, and I applaud them for doing it.

But Joe couldn’t resist his urges to get some licks in with his usual flaming rhetoric, making sure that his readers get reinforced with the message: 10:10 video bad, Watts bad. That’s not a surprise, as it is his standard predictable MO. Mr. Romm is as easy to forecast as DC summer weather; hot, muggy, with a chance of storms.

Due to the uproar over the 10:10 video, this story got rather buried in the climate news cycle. It is almost as embarrassing as the 10:10 video, because, well, who would want this guy to align with their cause?

An audio recording attributed to the al-Qaeda leader and broadcast on the internet yesterday expresses concern about the devastating floods in Pakistan and calls on Muslims to provide relief for the victims.”The number of victims caused by climate change is very big… bigger than the victims of wars,” says the recording.

If genuine, the recording would be Bin Laden’s first since March 25.

It was not clear when the tape was made, but Bin Laden congratulated Muslims on the holy fasting month of Ramadan which ended September 10.

“The catastrophe (in Pakistan) is very big and it is difficult to describe it,” the recording says.

“What we are facing… calls for generous souls and brave men to take serious and prompt action to provide relief for their Muslim brothers in Pakistan.”

The recording makes a series of recommendations to deal with climate changes namely preventive measures that should be taken by governments in the face of disasters.

=====================================================

Given the events of this week, do the proponents of AGW really want to have OSBL, a man who kills people for having a differing view than him, as an ally for their cause? Do they really want an ally with a world voice that confuses weather with climate?

Note and update: Some people misunderstood my intent, that’s my fault for not writing clearly in the first place, and I accept the criticism for that and offer my apology if I unduly offended anyone. This was simply a case of writing something, then realizing that people were seeing it completely differently than I intended. I’ve removed the lines above that caused the issue and added this clarification below:

In case somebody misunderstands, it should be clearly understood that it is not my intent to compare these AGW proponents to OSBL in any possible way. I only want to point out that like with the 10:10 fiasco, AGW proponents that don’t want this sort of bad publicity connected with their movement, IMO should distance themselves and their organizations from OSBL.

“…confuses weather with climate”
Nice irony there.

I’m waiting for OBL to denounce this-
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-south-asia-11450011

Suspected militants in southern Pakistan have destroyed at least 27 tankers carrying fuel for Nato forces in Afghanistan, officials said.

Or is he buying carbon (or nitrogen) credits ahead of operations now? Makes a change from hijacking or charging protection money for convoys though. Personally I think he’s best ignored and not given the oxygen of publicity.

I mistakenly posted under the initials tats yesterday. I have been away and re-upped on a new computer and typed the different name. Sorry, I have corrected the slip.
There are only a minority of posters who seem to get that the OBL/Global Warming scam is just one of many. There is no left and right among the big players; there is totalitarianism. They do not care which side it comes from. We little “ants” keep running around in one direction or the other but at the top the goal is control and there is only one party. (This is not new to this decade. Sinclair Lewis wrote “It Can’t Happen Here” in the 1930s.)

Osama’s dead. Who made the tape, and why?
The combination of the alleged OBL statement and the 10:10 propaganda video makes for quite the “You’re either with us [on curbing emissions], or we’ll kill you” message, indeed.
But one has to also wonder WHY ‘climate change’ is being inserted in the message of a despised icon. An icon that is, most likely, of a dead person. OBL has been “probably dead” for quite awhile now (see (1) below for some news sources on that.), but his ghost – so to speak – is being kept alive, probably by the western intelligence community itself, for propaganda purposes.
Once you consider the likeliness that “OBL” (associated in the general public with ‘terrorism’) is being LINKED ON PURPOSE with “concern over climate change” (aka ‘environmentalism’), you got to wonder if the real intent is in fact a de facto covert smear campaign against environmentalism itself. This “news” is more bizarre than anything else.

I doubt that OBL’s intent was to aid anyone in Pakistan, Muslim or not; and I really don’t think he gives a hang about climate. He’ll use any tragedy in whatever area of the world that fits his purpose; he’ll support any cause that fits his purpose too. This is war. This is psychology. This is called keeping your face on the telly and people talking about you. Some call it spin. Whatever you call it, he seems to have no trouble doing it. Was AGW used, you bet. Will he do it again, if it serves his purpose he will; especially if everyone is so helpful. He’s probably kicking the cave walls over that 10:10 crap that blew him off of the web for a few days.

Anthony,
I love the site, you’re doing a fantastic thing here, but you don’t have to have a dog
in every race. You could’ve sat in the garden with a nice cup of tea – it would’ve
been a better use of your time. Pace yourself, don’t wear yourself out.

My point in my earlier post too. This is something people should back away from.
Not embrace. Thanks, Anthony…

It’s an interesting sign of the times that bin Laden blames the west for problems thought to arise from global warming.
However, if he came out in favor of doing more exercise, this should not come as an embarrassment to exercise advocates, any more than his endorsement of AGW should come as an embarrassment to AGW advocates.
It is curious that he blames the west for consuming the oil that that countries like Saudi Arabia, the Gulf States, Kuwait, Libya, Iran, etc, sell. Isn’t it equally their fault for selling it?

Hmmm – what tj is saying I think already for some time: “There is no left and right among the big players; there is totalitarianism.”
Indeed. The big haves don’t want the havenots to consume much and think much. Therefore climatic and other scares are good for their business.

If we waste all our efforts and money on combating AGW, we will have less time and money to wage war on terror. Not that I am advocating waging a war on terror, but it is easy to see why OBL would wish to stir matters and promote AGW as the most serious threat facing the world

Mike McMillan,
Thanks for posting the video but it doesn’t make me feel much better when you see how the room still cheered the goracle on que. It wasn’t a very large rally, but still.
His factoids are clearly off the wall, but I doubt many in that room will bother ever trying to look them. They want, need and therefore shall – believe.
It was probably not good for his health though. Al Gore has long suffered from severe alergies to any form of decent or unscripted questioning. Who could ever forget this near death experience:

Except that OBL has been mostly dead since 2001. Either completely dead or effectively dead. If he is alive, then he is like Saddam Hussein was alive in his spider-hole. Living, but not alive.
Let’s just focus on eliminating the next level militants and fuggedabout OBL.
Eco-terrorism, AGW and neo-Malthusianism are greater threats to safety and freedom, at any rate, and on a much larger scale.

Anthony, the adverts may be smart adverts. They might be paying attention to what you click on. I clicked on the self-defense one and all of a sudden I’m getting the kind of adverts I usually click on. No more green stuff. Now the ads seem to be all about the stuff I like. At least the ones I’m seeing.
REPLY: And still, there’s nothing that WUWT has done wrong here, or can do about it. These Google Ads are no different than the same placements on thousands of other websites. I have the same thing happen with my own experience with other websites. Watts plumbing (which I’m not affiliated with in any way) follows me around. 😉 – Anthony

Romm and McKibben should not be held responsible for people who agree with them.

They should be when they place the views of those people prominently on their web sites.

Sorry, Jimash, I don’t get your allusions. (ET?? Hey, that is all over the MSM at this time, too… just another ruse, IMO. )My opinions are as good as yours unless you have seen “THE MAN” in person. Otherwise, since we live in a democracy (here) we are all entitled to our best guess.p.s. I am an ardent supporter of Anthony’s view and have been for quite some time. MVP: I am with you. Could they be purposefully jumping the shark? (Another allusion…sorry. Do you remember when the FONZ jumped the shark???) Hopefully, not all the good parts of environmentalism (I get 40+ to the gal.) but just AWG?

OBL is probably dead. What difference does that make? His ambitions did not die with him, unfortunately. These messages are intended to reach his followers.
Global warming is just another stick to beat the western world with, along with our decadent way of life.

Just for the record, since it was mentioned…
El Cid was a national hero of Christian Spain. Not the Arabs. He was one of the first heroes of the Reconquista – the several hundred years during which Spain evicted the Muslims. It culminated during the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella in the propitious year 1492. The Cid was tied to his horse in order to convince his enemies he was still alive and thus scare them off the field. According to legend, it worked.

Pamela,
maybe you can buy again Sony products – they swiftly “disassociated” themselves from 10:10 – apparently lessons were learned:
We also believe the video risks undermining the work of the many thousands of members of the public, schools and universities, local authorities and many businesses, of which Sony is one, who support the long-term aims of the 10:10 movement and who are actively working towards the reduction of carbon emissions.
As a result we have taken the decision to disassociate ourselves from 10:10 at this time.

How did you think your readership would interpret a story like this? Considering how often scientists and other supporting AGW are routinely referred to as fascists and criminals on this website by commenters, its not surprising many would see OBL in a similar light to Joe Romm, Al Gore, etc. And saying AGW proponents should “distance” themselves from OBL’s statements is almost as absurd.

“Well, I haven’t heard any denouncement of these remarks by the pro-AGW eco-fascists. Their silence can only be interpreted as a tacit endorsement of OSBL’s killing of those who disagree with them.”
This perffectly illustrates my point above.
