I and other moderators get tired of fixing this in comments daily, so I’m going to make a simple post on how to put links into your comment messages here. It’s dirt simple.
1. DON’T try to edit HTML to put in links in comments by hand. If you must, use an external HTML editor and test it first, then paste the HTML in. We also have a test page in the menu where you can try out comments and embedding beforehand.
2. KISS (keep it simple stupid):
There’s really no need to embed links and connect them to words, just type/paste in the URL with a short description. WordPress will automatically generate a link!
For example, here’s an AP story on climate talks that I posted in 5 seconds simply using cut and paste of topic and URL and no HTML editing. WordPress generated the link automatically.

You can try this out in comments below. Please be considerate of us overworked authors and moderators and follow KISS.
Thanks, Anthony

John, there are ways around that, too
And there are ways around *that*, too — scroll your cursor over the link and read where it’s going to send you on your desktop’s footer.
Yeah, I found that out the hard way…
Grease Monkey helps too.
Test…

Which one is the ‘Any Key’ ?
🙂
I thought you had to put HTML tags in. I’ve put them in manually here and then again to see if WordPress publishes the link here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/.
By the way, a “preview post” button would be extremely useful.
Actually that is how hypertext is supposed to work :p. You can view the destination in your browser status bar (in most browsers).
Good one!

You’re right. I was just having some HTML fun.

Martin, to turn off caps lock just mail your keyboard to the EPA. That will take care of our problem, if not your problem.

Oh, can’t we have a prettier way of linking to previous comments?
Do you mean like this?
Analysis: Climate talks stumble http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5grWZrI1QCVpRj8N1hZtEKzKduVXAD9
That keeps the link distinct from the title, whereas this is better, when embedded in a href tags:
Analysis: Climate talks stumble
Anthony & Team,
OK, I use the test page often especially to see if I get links correctly.
John
Sorry, should have been:
Analysis: Climate talks stumble.
However, a preview option would solve all such issues.
REPLY: and for the gazillionth time, wordpress.com does not offer a preview feature I wish it did. Anthony

> [Missing link left out because it was missing.]
> Well, that didn’t work, WordPress interprets those brackets differently.
WP interpreted the contents <as HTML&rt; and treated the entire URL as a HTML command, didn’t recognize it, and discarded it.
I have several notes on Word Press vs HTML, including the base point about URLs on my WUWT Guide at http://home.comcast.net/~ewerme/wuwt/
Or I could say my WUWT Guide. Some times the <<a href=…&rt; is useful here. Usually not.
So, I hear Climate talk stumble. Wow – who’da thunk it? 🙂
> Or I could say my WUWT Guide. Some times the <<a href=…&rt; is useful here. Usually not.
And even if you think you know what you're doing, you're probably mistaken. Let me try that again. Mods, please don’t fix my stupid mistakes here. 🙂
Some times the <a href=…> is useful here. Usually not.

That’s all very well, but you haven’t explained how you can quote one bit from one link and then seamlessly add another bit from another site and so make ONE LINK!
I believe there’s a chap at Penn State U who can explain how to do this.
Yes, there’s a real trick to doing it.
Dear Mr Anthony Watts:
Congratulations on reaching 50 million UNIQUE visits! That is superb and extremely impressive! You run the world number 1 climate science blog and maybe even the number 1 science blog.
I think you hold a unique position in mankind history: It is pretty clear today that politics corrupts science and that, for instance, climate science and macroeconomics have been turned into pseudosciences by politics. It is pretty clear that academia, media and bureaucracy often spectacularily fail in providing science when politicians, media and bureaucracy are into corrupting that science.
I think that you have a UNIQUE position in mankind history because you are the absolute world leader blog in climate science and the defeat of the alarmist climate pseudoscience will be total and unquestionable. We will see photos of millions square kilometers increasing sea ice and hard winters and it will be unquestionably obvious that their theories were pseudoscience.
There are so many pseudoscience there but I cannot think of another pseudoscience where the victory will be so total as your victory over the climate pseudoscience will be. For insance in macroeconomics they know very well how to lie and a total victory as you will have probably never exists. You -and thousands others- are using the internet quasi-miracoulous information spreading power to destroy psudoscience and turn it into actual science.
What you do here is much much bigger than your daily job, your business and your state. What you do goes beyond the USA and beyond our epoch. You are witing the book on how the defeat, using the web marvelous information spreading capability, the pseudoscience that we have been fed for milleniums whenever science was corrupted by politicians.
You said that you have trouble running your daily business and running this blog and that you receive no funds from NGOs. I think you got to world No 1 because of your intellectual honesty, your rigor and because you have a natural talent for posting interesting stuff in an interesting and clear way!.
What we people care about is your intellectual honesty, rigor and clarity. It does not matter for us where the funds to pay for your work come from as long as you maintain those qualities that made you great.
I think there is no problem in accepting funds from NGOs since you will not be corrupted by those funds. It is the easily corruptible that allege that the procedence of funds matter so much. I think there are thousands of NGOs that would like to contribute just to allow you to make real science.
Of course, maybe your heroic way of doing this with no funding and volunteer moderation is what it makes you so great and receiving funds would destroy that unique quality, but for me the qualities that made you so big are your rigor, intellectual honesty, clarity and you being able to generate interesting posts.
Thanks for reading!
Best regards
The title of this thread, “WUWT operational note,” [yawn] needs to be more direct and authoritative. In line with the theme of ‘dirt simple,’ I’d suggest something like:
DIRT BAGS, LISTEN UP!
You want your freakin’ “Preview” button? Then go get CA Assistant.
I preview EVERYTHING, so I know my links are set up right. Also helps find any HTML “quote” issues, as well as others, before you post.
Thanks Anthony but I feel much more confortable by personally writing the html code. First, because I am familiar enough with it as to not make mistakes. Second, because I have never tried what you suggest with KISS, I don’t know how it works or whether the result will be exactly what I expect. With html tags I know the output, with WP’s interpretation of what I write I don’t know it. It would be different if there was a preview button available though.
