Statement of Lisa P. Jackson Administrator, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Legislative Hearing on Clean Energy Policies That Reduce Our Dependence on Oil
House Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment
WASHINGTON – Chairmen Markey and Waxman, Ranking Members Upton and Barton, Chairman Emeritus Dingell, and Members of the Subcommittee, thank you for inviting me to testify about the Environmental Protection Agency’s work to reduce America’s oil dependence and greenhouse gas emissions. That work stems from two seminal events.
First, in April 2007, the U.S. Supreme Court concluded in Massachusetts v. EPA that the Clean Air Act’s definition of air pollution includes greenhouse gases. The Court rejected then-Administrator Johnson’s refusal to determine whether that pollution from motor vehicles endangers public health or welfare.
In response to the Supreme Court’s decision, and based on the best available science and EPA’s review of thousands of public comments, I found in December 2009 that motor-vehicle greenhouse gas emissions do endanger Americans’ health and welfare.
I am not alone in reaching that conclusion. Scientists at the 13 federal agencies that make up the U.S. Global Change Research Program have reported that unchecked greenhouse gas emissions pose significant risks to the wellbeing of the American public. The National Academy of Sciences has stated that the climate is changing, that the changes are mainly caused by human interference with the atmosphere, and that those changes will transform the environmental conditions on Earth unless counter-measures are taken.
The second pivotal event was the agreement President Obama announced in May 2009 between EPA, the Department of Transportation, the nation’s automakers, America’s autoworkers, and the State of California to seek harmonized, nationwide limits on the fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of new cars and light trucks.
My endangerment finding in December satisfied the prerequisite in the Clean Air Act for establishing a greenhouse gas emissions standard for cars and light trucks of Model Years 2012 through 2016. So I was able to issue that final standard earlier this month, on the same day that Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood signed a final fuel efficiency standard for the same vehicles.
Using existing technologies, manufacturers can configure new cars and light trucks to satisfy both standards at the same time. And vehicles complying with the federal standards will automatically comply with the greenhouse gas emissions standard established by California and adopted by 13 other states. This harmonized and nationally uniform program achieves the goal the President announced last May.
Moreover, the EPA and DOT standards will reduce the lifetime oil use of the covered vehicles by more than 1.8 billion barrels. That will do away with more than a billion barrels of imported oil, assuming the current ratio of domestic production to imports does not improve. The standards also will eliminate more than 960 million metric tons of greenhouse gas pollution.
But if Congress now nullified EPA’s finding that greenhouse gas pollution endangers the American public, that action would remove the legal basis for a federal greenhouse gas emissions standard for motor vehicles. Eliminating the EPA standard would forfeit one quarter of the combined EPA-DOT program’s fuel savings and one third of its greenhouse gas emissions cuts. California and the other states that have adopted California’s greenhouse gas emissions standard would almost certainly respond by enforcing that standard within their jurisdictions, leaving the automobile industry without the nationwide uniformity that it has described as vital to its business.
I would like to mention one more action that EPA has taken to reduce America’s oil dependence and greenhouse gas emissions. In February, I signed a final renewable fuels standard. It substantially increases the volume of renewable products – including cellulosic bio-fuel – that refiners must blend into transportation fuel. EPA will implement the standard fully by the end of 2022. In that year alone, the standard will decrease America’s oil imports by 41 and a half billion dollars. And U.S. greenhouse gas emissions that year will be 138 million metric tons lower thanks to the standard.
EPA’s recent work on vehicles and fuels shows that enhancing America’s energy security and reducing America’s greenhouse gas pollution are two sides of the same coin.

No, no no, Lisa. We must reduce our dependence on FOREIGN oil by producing our own. The levels of CO2 in our atmosphere today are dangerously and unprecedentedly low, compared to the Cambrian explosion era when life boomed, and we must try to generate more CO2 for the sake of the rain forests and the polar bears (the latter which depend on seals, that depend on fish, that depend on algae, that depend on CO2, etc.). This position is not controversial – it is a precautionary principle we must accept for our planet, flora and fauna, and our generations to come. We can no longer resort to wind energy, swatting helpless birds from the sky, nor blot out the sunlight with acres of solar panels, depriving the fertile land beneath them of needed sunlight and rainfall, snails and burrowing owls. We must act soon, by 2012 at the very latest, before a tipping point occurs when life as we know it may cease to thrive or exist.

Too bad the best available science was based on a false premise (increased CO2 causing global warming) and hysteria (Gore’s movie).
And the standard on biofuel to be fully implemented by 2022 will increase prices of food by how much, and will increase the world’s deforestation by what percentage as more forest is cleared in order to produce this low energy density fuel which will lower mileage in vehicles using it?
The Clean Air Act provides:
<blockquote?“The Administrator shall by regulation prescribe (and from time to time revise) in accordance with the provisions of this section, standards applicable to the emission of any air pollutant from any class or classes of new motor vehicles or new motor vehicle engines, which in his judgment cause, or contribute to, air pollution which may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare.”
I hope Ms. Jackson is prepared to justify the whole part about “which may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare.” I don’t think CAGW is a reasonable anticipation of danger.
However, there could be some procedural hurdles in making sure SCOTUS doesn’t determine that Mass v EPA didn’t already determine this question and gave the Administrator full discretion regardless of reasonableness.
The woman is an absolute criminal.

The way to reduce our dependance on foreign oil is to drill here in the US.It’s been known for years there is plenty of oil here but all of the enviromental wackos won’t let us drill.We got plenty of oil but we can’t get it so we have to pay 3 prices .Now we’ve getting alternative energy but WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO WITH IT .We having no vehicles that run off of alternative fuel and if we ever do they will cost at least twice what they do now.The Hybrid cost 4000. 00 more than the standard gas model.Now how many years will it take to make up that 4000.00 sticker price and it doesn’t do as goog on the highway as it does in the city.

The U.S. gubment owns Jeep. They are in the process of giving it to Fiat. The engine is available in the Liberty. Here is an example of how two groups in one government want to operate like communists and declare solutions and prevent them at the same time.
If we can smuggle in illegals, why would we ned to smuggle in fuel efficient autos? It is horrible how short the cruising range is on a Jeep wrangler. with diesel, it improves a lot. But then they want to peddle cars that are electric and run 40 miles per 3 hour charge.

Sounds like a politically defensive move to fend off potential moves at removing CO2 and/or other greenhouse gases from the Clean Air Act’s purview.

I will never vote for another Democrat for as long as I live. Not even if they mend their ways. I can’t believe the mindset of supposedly educated and enlightened people. We are moving towards the dark ages and it is because of my party. I once thought the Republicans headed that charge with their religiosity. My bad. Dems are just as bad with their own form of religiosity. My vote for Obama has been rescinded.
A switch away from burning fossil fuels is not a bad idea. The world may not be warming, but it still has only finite fossil fuel reserves. We will have to make such a switch some time this century. The question is one of timing. Forcing this change too early will cause unnecessary economic harm.
However encouraging a switch to biofuels is a big mistake. It isn’t energy efficient and diverts precious land to the production of fuel – land that could be used to produce food to feed a hungry world or for its natural conservation value. I can’t understand why environmentalists seem so infatuated with biofuel given that it requires a huge acreage of land be handed over to the production of a monoculture crop.
A much better idea with long term potential is a switch to either hydrogen or electric powered vehicles, with the hydrogen/electricity supplied by nuclear power. This doesn’t waste land.
Let the lawsuits begin.

Researchers at the University of Leeds calculate that around 1.5 million Titanic-sized icebergs each year are melting into the sea every year in the Arctic and Antarctic. This is causing sea level to rise by just 49 micrometers per year – around a hair’s breadth.
At that rate it would take 200 years for the oceans to rise by 1cm as a result of melting sea ice. If all the floating ice in the world melted it would cause sea levels to rise by just 4cm. In comparison if all the ice on land melted it would cause a rise of 70m.
But Professor Andrew Shepherd, one of the authors of the study published in Geophysical Research Letters, said the tiny rise caused by melting ice was still significant. …

A savings of 1.8 billion barrels of oil saved equals how many days worth of oil regularly consumed in the US? Well, at 2008 levels of 19.5 million barrels per day, that’s about 92.3 days worth of oil.

This sounds like the EPA lobbying congress to affirm its judgment about what’s best for us. It’s not congress that makes law. It’s the agencies that congress sets up to do what they can’t find the resolve to undertake.

I’m kinda confused here. Is the CO2 from motor vehicles the ONLY CO2 that’s bad? I didn’t see the part where breathing, cow farting, or bio-matter produced CO2 is classified and how do they know the difference? I assume that there will be inspections of motor vehicles at designated facilities with appropriate Carbon Offset certificates ready for purchase. And will this “certificate” have a picture of Al Gore on it?

I made a post earlier tying this gubment to the EPA and Chrysler. I checked and no where are there mentions of Chrysler being the property of Fiat on the Fiat website. This means that the EPA and jackson must rule over the chrysler arm of our feds.

Cellulosic bio-fuel? As in liquid fuel made from corn stalks and sawdust? Last I read, this was being tried in the lab, in response to concerns about biofuel making impacting the food supply, and was nowhere near commercial deployment let alone production in quantities sufficient for nationwide mandated use.

I seem to recall hearing of a recent study that manufacturing and using ethanol adds more CO2 to the atmosphere than does using gasoline to power internal combustion engines. This administration and the EPA are very efficient in their attempted destruction of our country: the cost of energy will go up (as regressive a tax as can be) as will the price of food as more farm acreage is used for ethanol production. Factor in the increased transportation costs and you have a triple dose of inflation to add to inevitable higher interest rates as the dollar sinks due to the nearly exponential increase in the deficit. November may be the most crucial mid-term election in the history of the USA.
Lisa Jackson is not an elected official. She should not be legislating from an appointed position.

This is certainly good news for America’s enemies, who must be celebrating about now.
From the purely political point of view, they can say anything they want about green house gases. From the scientific point of view CO2 like anything else is always a matter of concentration as to the effects it may or may not have. Measures that encourage greater mechanical efficiency are not a bad. To quote opinions of others is acceptable. To participate in propaganda and sophistry to achieve your political ends is expected. To base your policy and reasoning on less then technically or scientifically sound ground is poor policy. It is never a good idea to try and achieve goals no matter how admirable for the wrong reasons. This goes to the heart of the means to ends argument and while this may make short term political sense it is still philosophically and morally indefensible.
Much public policy in many places around the world is based on one mythology or another. That is the way it is that is the way it has always been. I see no prospect of changing that. Like many other wrong headed policies based on mythologies they can and often do come back to bite you and bite you hard.

CAP & TRADE IS DENOUNCED AS A “SCAM” BY EVERY, repeat EVERY, one of the TOP Scientists ( even ) on the GREEN SIDE

If you dig through the California Air Resources Board documentation on the Low Carbon Fuels Standard, you will find that corn ethanol has a carbon intensity of 95 grams CO2/MJ of fuel energy. Thus, the EPA mandate to produce 16 billion gal/yr of ethanol will do nothing to reduce the carbon emissions from vehicles. It will only bring subsidies to agriculture and run-off from farms that ends up causing dead zones in the Gulf of Mexico.

And, the EPA will mandate an additional 16 Billion gal of cellulosic ethanol. The target for 2010 was 100 million gal, but it turns out that misrepresentation of production by two ethanol producers lead the EPA to believe that this was achievable. The EPA revised their estimate to 6 million gal, and they will be lucky to see 3 million. This will all come from pilot plants, not commercial facilities. Cellulosic ethanol has been a promise for 20 year, and it never delivered on that promise.
Biodiesel is in a similar position, but at least they show a reduction in carbon emissions, but only barely. Another story for another time.

An embarrassment to our nation. I apologize to the world on behalf of the U.S.A. If we were to desire our dependence on foreign energy away, all we’d have to do is wish it so. We have enough oil, we have enough coal, we have enough natural gas to last us centuries beyond today. Any shortfall we may have, we could use atomic energy. The EPA’s answer is simply to cut down supply by increasing cost.
Efficient, cheap, plentiful, and ready to use energy. Why use it?

The Supreme Court can only offer ‘opinion’. It’s place it not to come to scientific conclusions. The Supreme Court is out of its place here. But then so many things are out of place in America. If a Constitutional lawyer took up a case about the validity of what the Supreme Court ‘concluded’ they would have a strong case.
But there is a real problem in the United States right now, many of its elected officials don’t care what the Constitution says. In fact it appears some hate the Constitution.
Well of course it has nothing to do with climate or the health of the American People or energy independence; these people are all plain Marxists who have been working on getting into power for years; and now that they have ramroaded through their so-called health reform law; they now need massive tax transfers of wealth to fund the whole scam.
This whole bunch in the inner circle of the present administration are in my humble opinion borderline criminally insane; and if the American People don’t get some guts this November and turf this whole clatch out of the Congress and get a Veto-Proof Senate of adult people; then you can kiss goodbye to the American experiment in liberty.
The Republicans aren’t any better than the Democrats; and in particular except for a mere handful they are total wooses.

OK Ms Jackson, I got two questions. One physics and one economics.
Physics – OK, so the US reduces CO2 output by a percent or two through this regulation. Are you under the impression that this will have a significant effect on world wide levels? Or were you planning on building a wall around the United States stretching up to the stratosphere to keep foreign CO2 out?
Economics – OK, so if demand from the US drops, that would result in oil prices… let’s see, trying to remember how supply and demand works…. something about demand going down so prices fall… making it more affordable for other countries without silly rules… so their consumption goes up… I think that’s called a feedback loop? So most of what the US “saves” in CO2 production the rest of the world replaces?
Uhm – OK that was more than two questions. Two was just a prediction for scenario A. I had scenario B also written up which had six questions, and this was my actual prediction which I am now publishing because it was my original highest probabality prediction.
Well I just tried to listen to that Lisa Jackson video just above and I couldn’t stand more than the first 30 seconds of it.
I thought we were in real trouble before; but now I know it for sure.

EPA turns up climate heat as Senate dithers APRIL 28, 2010
“With prospects for a Senate climate bill under a cloud, the Obama administration has turned up the heat. The Environmental Protection Agency says in a new report that there is “clear evidence” that human activities are altering the Earth’s atmosphere and that climate is changing.”
“The EPA report lays out 24 “indicators” showing that climate is already shifting, most of them spotting trends in the United States. Greenhouse gas emissions have increased 14 percent in the United States from 1990 to 2008.”

The preferred method of making slaves is to convince the target population that it is in their best interest to be dependent on the slave master. It is continuously made in the earth from water, carbonate, and catalysts such as iron and cobalt minerals. They are just finding out about petroleum based volcanoes in the ocean, and oil leaks into the oceans without drilling. Where do you think the ethane and methane and higher hydrocarbon lakes on Titan, the moon of Saturn came from? Dinosaurs, also?

Summary:
1) Burning oil is a good thing, and there is plenty of coal and gas to boot
2) Windmills, solar panels, etc. are inefficient, costly to make, do not last long without costly maintenance, are bad for the environment and need huge tax subsidies to be viable.
3) CO2 is a very good thing
4) Earth gets hot and cold apart from man
5) Greenies need more education
6) Sol is a variable G major star; its atmosphere comprises 0.3% carbon. Earth’s atmosphere comprises 0.001% carbon. It warms the earth with visible and invisible radiation that varies in a cyclical fashion.
7) No one can predict earth’s climate
To the guy who had questions about cellulosic ethanol, it has reached pilot-scale at a number of facilites nationwide (sorry, can’t provide link). I believe a few commercial-scale facilities are currently on the drawing boards. My guess is that by 2015, the techonology would be commercialized.
By the way, how many of you know that 800,000 barrels per day of ethanol was produced in the US in Dec 2009? I expect it to exceed one million barrels per day by end of 2010. At 50 mpg, do you know that is enough fuel to power 50 million Prius cars annually at 12,000 miles driven per year? Which brings up another point, why aren’t the Prius sold as flex-fuel capable?

All she is saying is that the EPA has “harmonized” current standards. The other “bits” about 2022 aren’t of much concern as no one in their right mind will use such antiquated solutions at that point.

On Biofuels
As a major producer of palm oil, the Malaysian government is encouraging the production of biofuel feedstock and the building of biodiesel plants that use palm oil. Domestically, Malaysia is preparing to change from diesel to bio-fuels by 2008, including drafting legislation that will make the switch mandatory. From 2007, all diesel sold in Malaysia must contain 5% palm oil. Malaysia is emerging as one of the leading biofuel producers, with 91 plants approved and a handful now in operation, all based on palm oil.
Meanwhile …
Studies in Sabah show that orang-utan population have declined by 50 to 90% over the past few decades. This severe decline is due to several causes including hunting and pet trade, but the foremost reason is forest losses when the forest is cut down and converted to agriculture. In Borneo and Sumatra where wild orang-utans live, forest is primarily converted to palm oil and industrial tree plantations. Forest conversion results in an extreme loss of biodiversity and the destruction of species like the orang-utans.
Meanwhile …
The European Commission and some EU member states hope to redefine palm oil plantations as “forests,” according to a leaked document from the EU executive. Rules governing the use of biofuels were supposed to be designed to sort out the sustainable versions of the technology from their dirtier cousins following a massive backlash against it in 2008. At the time, an avalanche of reports revealed that many forms of the fuel source both increase greenhouse gas emissions and put pressure on food prices.
The production of palm oil was one of the most egregious examples of the problem.
In the wake of the biofuels boom, there has been a rush to chop down rainforests to make way for palm oil plantations. The UN says that the growth in such plantations is now the main cause of rainforest destruction in Malaysia and Indonesia. Worse still are the land grabs and human rights abuses resulting from the lucrative business. In Indonesia, as EUobserver reported two years ago, when native communities complain about the loss of their lands, private security firms and police that collude with the oil companies crack down violently on protesters.
But in a manoeuvre that has shocked environmental campaigners, a draft commission communication offering guidance to EU member states on the use of biofuels has classified palm oil plantations – the source of one of the most destructive forms of biofuels – as “forests.” Essentially, the document argues that because palm oil plantations are tall enough and shady enough, they count as forests.
So it seems that in the name of preserving Gaia’s climate, the world is trading virgin forest for palm oil plantations and orang-utans for polar bears while Uncle Al and his cronies get rich keeping underground resources underground.

The commercial cellulosic plants were promised to be in operation by now and producing the ethanol volume goal documented by the EPA. These plants were built with huge government subidies and are experiencing technical difficulties according to reports from the Wall Street Journal and are way behind schedule. One plant is producing methanol instead in much less volume than promised. Methanol can already be produced more efficiently with existing technology. As I recall from the WSJ they are experiencing some problems with catalyst cost. Generally the feedstock is wood via cutting down trees therefore the carbon foot print is comparable to gasoline acording to the EPA studies.
Can someone explain to me the wisdom of cutting down trees that absorb CO2, and waste a portion of the energy in the wood to produce ethanol that has 2/3 the BTU content of Gasoline?
Since this technology is failing to meet expectations, the Obama administration has announced that it will increase the government subsidy in an attempt to produce the target ethanol volume via cellulosic means.
The day will come when people are limited by the government on how much driving they can do.
Oh well,at least it would cut the crime rate.

While the comments about greenhouse gases and biofuels are clearly alarmist/stupid, there is a crying need for Americans to become more fuel efficient.
One way of achieving this is by increasing fuel taxes – only Venezuela has lower fuel taxes than the USA – in fact, they have negative taxes!!
The benefits of the US reducing oil consumption are: i) lower budget deficits, ii) lower oil imports and therefore dependence on outside sources, and iii) consequential lower oil prices.
An even better way for the US to reduce crude oil consumption is to switch from gasoline to diesel powered vehicles and then tax gasoline to make it more expensive than diesel.
In Europe, there has been a big switch from gasoline to diesel powered vehicles – for the same performance you get 25-30% more mileage per gallon. If all automobiles in the US had diesel engines, the reduction in daily crude oil consumption would be around 1.5-2.0 million barrels per day.
Lisa Jackson’s experience in the federal EPA and both New York’s and New Jersey’s DEP have been solely in the field of enforcing compliance. She’s a bureaucrat who used threats and lawsuits to get her way, yet made a complete hash of the work she was supposed to do — her policies led to lawsuits against property owners who trimmed the weeds in drainage ditches on their property because they were “modifying seasonal waterways” and against farmers who *built* stock ponds because they “interfered with the free replenishment of natural streams” — even though the nearest free-flowing natural stream may have been three miles away and on the opposite side of a ridgeline.
Jackson’s MO consisted of requiring mountains of paperwork to be completed before any toxic remediation could even begin. I can speak from experience that, in New Jersey, the paper-pushers loved her and the people who had to do the actual cleanup work hated her guts.

On Biofuels
As a major producer of palm oil, the Malaysian government is encouraging the production of biofuel feedstock and the building of biodiesel plants that use palm oil.”
I believe the palm oil industry is obsolescent and will soon be replaced by jatropha. Jatropha is the area that big business and governments are rushing into. The Indian government is talking about setting aside 100 million hectares for jatropha and Indonesia as much as 20 million hectares. Jatropha is far more efficient than palm oil, yielding as much as 10 tons of oil per hectare which is the main reason why palm oil must necessarily be abandoned. Even more importantly, jatropha can thrive on poor quality, semi arid land which would be a big incentive for European governments to back it instead of palm oil.

But as the price of fuel rockets. I’m thinking of buying the diesel version next time, which is closer to 55 mpg with the same kind of performance.

No. Increasing taxes on fuel is absolutely the worst thing we could do, and is a typical liberals’ “solution” to any problem. Energy is the life-blood of an economy, and artificially raising its cost is like tying an anchor onto it. High energy costs particularly hurt the poor and middle class.
If people want smaller cars, they’ll buy them, and their reward will be lowered fuel use. The same goes for smaller, and better-insulated houses.
If the goal is greater energy independence, there are certainly ways to achieve that without higher energy taxes.
The bottom line is that higher energy costs are far more detrimental than anything positive they might accomplish.

The current oil spill in the long run will amount to a tempest in a teapot. Like the Valdez spill, no lasting harm will come of this. Oil is a natural mineral. It does have some toxicity, but the effect is still minimal. We have become a nation of whiners and wussies and the politicians play on our fears and insecurities. Wise up. They are just using you. No clothes too that were bought at the store. Pollution problem again. Please don’t buy groceries. Lots of pollution was created in getting it to the store, to keep the lights on at the store, to keep the refrigeration on there. So no food from the grocery store. No chocolate. Bad pollution issues there, and probably unfair labor practices to get the cocoa. No elevators. No more tv too Veronica. You’re a polluter. Your life has been creating pollution.

Exactly how many sheets of plywood will fit in an Audi TT? How about 2×4’s?
How many bags of cement will fit in the trunk? Will a 9 cubic foot wheel barrow fit in the trunk? How about a lawn mower? A bicycle perhaps? A 10″ compound miter saw perhaps?
My 250cc moped gets 70 MPG, goes 80MPH and will carry as much stuff as an Audi TT.
You don’t need an Audi TT, a moped will carry just as much, gets twice the mileage and costs less then 10%.
I do however need a second vehicle that is big to carry the stuff I can’t fit on my moped. It has to be big enough to carry plywood, wheelbarrows and other various tools and building supplies.

My old 1987 Porche 944 does 33 mpg highway with a redline of 140 mph. I am unimpressed by the Audi. I bought my Porche 3rd hand for $5K. It gets around 26 mpg in the city with its 4 banger.

Enneagram: Yes: Oil is naturally occuring, but it is far from “clean”. It causes mass environmental and econimic damage when there is a spill. Can’t you see the difference. Suggest you go down to the Gulf, take a dip and feel how “Natural” this whole mess is. And while you are at it, try and convince the local fisherman what a Natural thing this spill is.
Actually, the Clean Air Act definition of air pollution includes any “substance or matter” which is emitted into or otherwise enters the ambient air. Such definition unarguably also includes oxygen, water, nitrogen, etc.
So if she, in her sole opinion, decided that oxygen “may reasonably be anticipated to endanger public health or welfare” then the EPA could regulate oxygen.
Again, I think this needs to be attacked on the basis of reasonableness.

This is not an Exxon Valdez level event, and our responses to oil spills has gotten better since then. This leak should be stopped in a bit. Granted, experts are saying if they end up drilling relief wells then this might go on for one or two years. Experts also said the Kuwaiti oil field fires would be burning for more than a decade.
If the slick hits the shores it may inconvenience thousands of sea birds. Therefore in place of the energy this well would yield we can put up a massive wind farm, place it offshore like they are planning to do in the UK. Then we can have clean wind energy, when the wind blows, and chop up hundreds of thousands of sea birds every year. Better to have some surviving sea birds than none at all after the runaway global warming destroys all life on Earth, right?

We are doing our best to clean up the worst natural oil disaster in the world, also known as the Athabasca Tar Sands… a giant desolate area with stunted plant life and non-potable rivers and streams. When we’re done, the area will be pristine. And STILL there are “environmentalists” trying to block the whole thing. I think they’re nuts.
Those windmills you love so much will kill a lot more birds than the oil slick. Both solar and oil are way too expensive. We are drowning in nat gas though. At least it is a good energy source, like oil and coal.

I am afraid you are correct, and I thank God I never had any children.
What I can not understand is that if you point out where all this is taking us to well educated “progressives” who have children, they know they are condemning their children to a much lower standard of living and rejoice! One even told me he had spoken to his kids and they were all OK with it. In the next five minutes the kids were grinning as they showed off Daddy’s new SUV.

Currently farming equipment is not subject to fuel tax. If Farm tractors will be subject to similar regs to that of long distance truckers it is the first step to regulating and taxing ALL equipment using internal combustion engines.

They are trying that in my neck of the woods. Putting all the road money into trains trying to force everyone onto mass transit (Portland, OR). You know what the cops call the Max train? A rolling crime wave. Crime has gone up significantly a half mile to either side of the track. The criminals jump on the train, go to a neighborhood, commit crimes then hop the train to ride home again. They are out of their area so nobody recognizes them and there is no vehicle description or license plate to give cops if they are seen. Oh, lets not forget transit was given money to put up security cameras but most those don’t work or were never isntalled.

Don’t worry! as long as we do not need a billion bucks for living. Perhaps you won’t believe me but I knew one of these guys, many years ago, and a few weeks afterwards he was eaten by a crocodile in a southern asia jungle. I think that they just take care of their pennies in case they need some change. If they think they will make the world better, well, that is their illusion. As Paul Brunton’s indian guru said: “Change yourself and the world will change”. If you are unable to change a simple trait of you character how do you dare to change the world?
Well, I concede you that some guys are utterly disgusting and at the same time ridiculously funny like our beloved “Al Baby”, caring so much of destroying the last remnants of knowledge in our kids and grandkids with his Nobel prize science or devilish like old crow Jerry Ravetz, who seeks to delete all archives of knowledge from humanity’s hard disk with his post-normal-virus.

Believe me, just wait 90-100 years, and things, believe me, will be different, so enjoy your life TODAY and let the “serious people” to worry about not so serious matters.
-Increased taxes means higher expenses in salaries.
-Higher salaries means the goods produced becomes more expensive.
-More expensive goods means the customer goes elsewhere.
-This force the investors to get the goods produced in China.
-This creates unemployment.
It is too late then for the politician to promise “more jobs” in the next election.
As usual the tyrants on the left cannot understand what is the cause and what is effect.
That is the great irony of it all.
