You have to wonder, has Dr. Mann decided to pull a CYA in the face of Climategate, or is he just not cognizant of how ridiculous his statement is in the context of his past behavior?
Since “Climategate” Dr. Michael Mann has been on a nonstop media blitz. It seems he’s given dozens if not hundreds of interviews since the story broke on November 19th. It seem obvious that he’ll talk to anyone in an effort to get his point across. Up until this one interview, the message has been consistent with much of what he’s said and done in the past. That is, until this zinger.
In an interview given to The Morning Call, Dr. Mann was able to alienate both sides of the debate with a single sentence:
“I would call them contrarians or, frankly in some cases, climate change deniers,” he said. “I’m a skeptic. When I see a scientific claim being made, I want to see it subject to scrutiny and validation.”
Climatician, heal thyself. Start with a mirror.
Yet, while saying things like:
“I wish in retrospect I had told him, ‘Hey, you shouldn’t even be thinking about this,’” [reference to deleting emails]
… when his own work is subject to “scrutiny”, he has to resort to FTP data folders labeled “censored“. Look at what happens when that Mann “censored” data is used.

Dr. Mann’s statement with respect to mosquitos especially those (Anopheles) that carry yellow fever and malaria being killed by cold winters- is flat out WRONG. Malaria was epidemic to most states in the US (as well as northern Europe) until the 1940s when the application of DDT and public health efforts eradicated malaria as a significant threat. Six US presidents contracted malaria– our capitol being in Washington was argued against because the area was viewed as a “malarial swamp.” The Anopheles mosquito’s range currently includes vast areas of the US, Canada, northern Europe and Asia. Areas far colder than any winter condition found in PA. Malaria is not a tropical disease – it is confined to the tropics simply due to the tropic’s poverty. If the US returns to a similar financial state malaria will return as well since the mosquito that carries it still thrives here. Dr Mann is disingenuous citing West Nile -it is recent and invasive in origin. There were also apocalyptic claims about West Nile when it was first identified.
What should worry us most: All global warmers/climate changers are all millionaires or billionaires. That is UNJUST!

I am also a sceptic, in that I want to see the evidence and arguments for a claim. And of course this way of thinking also applies to claims in other fields as well as science.
Importantly, scepticism is also independent of the subject matter, so no one person or group can claim “ownership” of this stance.

Did he get paid? Yes
Did he get large research grants? Yes
Did he get interviewed and quoted at length in the MSM? Yes

Has anyone heard this news. Professor James Schneider and a journalist colleague froze to death in the Antarctic. This is an example of scientists underestimating just how cold the Antarctic can get. B)Do these septics(sorry) know ANYTHING about science, or even watch Tv showing Greenland melting into the sea, Kilimanjaro’s glacier disappearing, Animals and insects moving north, icecap shrinking, permafrst melting,(BIG problem that one; Ocean becoming more acidic-(look up what that means), etc. ad infinatum. Heres a comment from a famous old Penn state attendee.
I suggested in a speech off the Penn State Campus, but here in State College, that Penn State sponsor a series of debates on campus with some of the people Dr. Mann has called “contrarians” that are just as decorated as he is as far as academic credentials go ( Dr Roy Spencer, Dr. Richard Lindzen come to mind). As a degreed Penn State meteorologist (1978) I, and many of the alumni and FORMER FACULTY from that era do not buy into the co2 argument beyond a debatable point. If Dr. Mann is so sure, surely he can have “success with honor” as is Penn States motto by vanquishing his foes in debate. As of this writing, I have seen no evidence that any debates are being set up.
Lord Chris Monckton has been after Al Gore for years and of course Gore wants no part of such thing. However the high minded such as Lindzen and Spencer do, and I would certainly hope, Dr. Mann would too, the chance to enlighten the public on this matter in a spirited joust. It would go a long way to informing people and perhaps bringing this into the open where it should be!
It would also help clear the name of the university and make it look to be shining star to those of us
that went there believe it to be. Perhaps I am more emotional, since as a former PSU wrestler, I spilled
blood and sweat there, also.
