‘Imagine 2200’: Grist Climate Fiction

From MasterResource

By Robert Bradley Jr.

“I’ll take my chances with energy freedom. I fear the energy dystopia of Climate Big Brother.”

Grist, “an independent nonprofit newsroom that’s spent 25 years telling the truth about our planet,” is now in the climate fiction business. Imagine 2200 is premised on “a core belief: The world we need has to be imagined before it can be built.” Grist’s Image 2200 Creative Manages Tory Stephens continues:

We are living through a moment where the stories being told about the future are shrinking, and the space to imagine something different is being crowded out by fear and despair. Imagine 2200 is an antidote: a global climate-fiction initiative in which writers from more than 90 countries have imagined new futures, shaped by justice and resilience, and informed by the real-world solutions already in motion.

Every story we publish celebrates, uplifts, and radically reimagines the idea of hope. Not the “cross your fingers” kind, but the kind that knows exactly what it’s up against. A clean, green, and just world is not only possible — it’s being written into existence by this community.

Science fiction? That plays into the hands of the ultra-skeptics who reject the causality of CO2 emissions and global warning.

But what to do when climate messaging is in a funk. Stated one activist:

Maybe the problem isn’t climate denial. Maybe it’s climate messaging. We’ve been attempting to scare or shame people into caring, and it’s not effective. Is it time to completely rethink how we talk about climate and sustainability? We’ve spent years trying to influence people through fear, data, and moral urgency. The results? Mixed.

Climate hushing, in fact, defines the issue in the U.S., as shown by the recent election (see Appendix).

It is far better to imagine what year 2200 will look like under a free market, adaptation world. Fossil fuels are still primary, and the anthropogenic warming is either uncontrolled with adaptation or mitigated by new, unimagined technologies. Free markets are wealth-is-health. Real problems inspire solutions.

The second scenario is grim. Energy poverty with poorer populations. And a world where the Climate Police are knocking on the door, checking on your energy usage–and maybe even meat consumption (or taxes could make meat unaffordable).

I’ll take my chances with energy freedom. I fear the energy dystopia of Climate Big Brother.

You know, that’s true. Let’s imagine what the world might look like 174 years from now… Back in the 1950s, people pictured the 21st century with flying cars and all sorts of extraordinary things. Instead, we got Al Gore, Greta Thunberg and prophets of climate doom. No need to wait another century and a half to be disappointed.

Some years ago, the Climate Community determined that the reason folks weren’t signing up for the Grand Solutions was that they just didn’t understand the problem, or it’s severity – it was a messaging problem. This, then opened the troughs to all folks with Communications BAs to jump on the band wagon.

The propaganda machine is in control as evidenced by the midterms. I can’t even fathom the level of stupidity required to elect radical socialists into office. The margins they won by don’t reflect a sane and informed electorate.

Why should we skeptics sacrifice luxuries? We see the alarmists living well, and none of the Dims I know have solar panels. They are hypocrites.

I am reminded of a novel, A Creed for the New Milenium, which assumed Global Cooling was real. It was a horror story.

title is A Creed for the Third Millennium, by Australian author Colleen McCullough. Date: 1985

Plot: Set in a dystopian, ice-age-threatened America in the year 2032, it follows a government official named Dr. Judith Carriol who tries to mold a charismatic psychologist, Joshua Christian, into a New Messiah to give a hopeless population hope.Cool! A.D. 2,032 means we’re almost there. (Prof Isaac Newton gave A.D. 2060 as the correctly calculated End-Date, so Dr. Judith comes close enough for government work.)
Makes [us] nostalgic for the early ’80s:
In those dark times, we were working days and (mostly) nights in a basement laser-laboratory in Ithaca (NY), and living (so-called) right around the corner from Carl Sagan’s mausoleum-inspired home perched High Above Cayuga’s Waters. Thomas Dolby’s She Blinded Me With Science blasting on the lab’s radio.
He (Sagan) of Nuclear-Winter Fame, which was the last gasp of the Ice-Age-Cometh Theory (global cooling). We were doomed by Thermonuclear War (& Fossil Fuels) to End All Life on the Planet … Seems we’ve never got to test properly that fine Hypothesis?
The noble-cause Activists among our lab-mates were circulating petitions against research into Star Wars (ballistic missile defense), but one noticed that our best lab workers were quietly signing contracts to work on the self-same Mega-Project. They went off to Livermore (CA) to build X-ray Lasers and invent laser-driven (thermo)nuclear fusion. Today they’re called Golden Dome and Inertial Confinement Fusion. Hah! Good Times …

These climate commentators can’t get things right five years into the future, let alone almost 175, so if their predictions are greeted with a healthy dose of derision, it should be welcomed. In addition, the climate crisis peddlers are widely suspected of getting generous bribes from left governments and environmental groups to advance their agendas, so no one should take their commentary with much seriousness, if any at all.

The way to get your message across is to tell the truth, don’t try to scare people and know what you are talking about. The other side fails on every count.

174 years – time for three or four world wars before that turns up.
