America Doesn’t Have an AI Problem. It Has a Competitiveness Problem.

Over the past several weeks, the debate over artificial intelligence has centered on whether America can build enough data centers, generate enough electricity, modernize the electric grid, and protect consumers from higher utility bills.

Those are important debates.

But they are all really the same debate.

America doesn’t have an AI problem. It has a competitiveness problem.

Artificial intelligence has become the latest test of whether the U.S. can still build the infrastructure needed to remain the world’s leading economic and technological power.

Every major AI breakthrough depends on computing power. Computing power depends on data centers. Data centers depend on abundant, reliable electricity. According to the International Energy Agency, electricity demand from data centers is projected to more than double by 2030 to roughly 945 terawatt-hours—more than Japan consumes in an entire year—with artificial intelligence serving as the principal driver of that growth. In the U.S., data centers are expected to account for nearly half of electricity demand growth over the remainder of the decade.

That reality changes the policy conversation.

AI is no longer just a technology issue. It is an energy issue. It is a permitting issue. It is a transmission issue. It is a manufacturing issue. Increasingly, it is a national security issue.

The bottleneck is no longer innovation.

It is execution.

The U.S. continues to lead the world in research, entrepreneurship, and private investment. American companies are investing hundreds of billions of dollars in AI infrastructure. But innovation alone is no longer enough if new power generation, transmission lines, transformers, semiconductor fabrication facilities, and critical mineral supply chains cannot keep pace.

The warning signs are already visible. The International Energy Agency notes that while AI data centers can often be constructed in just a few years, the transmission infrastructure and power generation required to support them frequently take far longer because of permitting hurdles, equipment shortages, and interconnection delays.

The same pattern extends well beyond AI.

The world’s most advanced semiconductors remain heavily concentrated in Taiwan. China dominates the processing of many critical minerals essential to advanced manufacturing and defense technologies. Major energy and transmission projects in the U.S. routinely spend years navigating regulatory approvals before construction even begins.

These are often treated as separate policy debates.

They are not.

They are different expressions of the same challenge: whether the U.S. can build, manufacture, and deploy strategic infrastructure quickly enough to outcompete its rivals.

America’s competitors increasingly understand this. They view energy, manufacturing, supply chains, advanced technology, and national security as parts of a single long-term strategy. Too often, Washington still debates them one committee, one agency, and one permitting process at a time.

That fragmented approach made sense when these issues evolved independently.

It no longer does.

Artificial intelligence is forcing policymakers to confront a broader reality: economic competitiveness cannot be separated from energy policy, industrial capacity, or infrastructure. Leadership in the next generation of technology will depend as much on what America can build as on what America can invent.

The U.S. possesses every advantage needed to lead: world-class universities, abundant natural resources, deep capital markets, innovative companies, and unmatched entrepreneurial talent.

The question is whether our policies can match those strengths.

Winning the AI race will require more than faster algorithms or larger data centers.

It will require rediscovering something America has always done at its best:

Building faster than anyone else.

70+% of the YouTube shorts I see have A.I. markers whether they’re A.I. generated or A.I. enhanced with some softening skin.

Even A.I. business programs (answering phones like pharmacies or initiating sales contacts like scammers) are easily identifiable yet insist they’re real people when it’s painfully obvious that they’re not.

We need a First Amendment law that requires every AI -modified original to show a Government-approved stamp (lower left, perhaps a skull and crossbones) indicating a modification of the original. Even photoshopping, but especially AI.

Your “Woke Class Universities” are a main pillar of your decline.

Wether this started with Frankfurts Schools Adorno entering Columbia University( how much can a single person do) or Rockefeller massive meddling in Ivy Leagues, Fraternities and the education system is up to debate but

in 1914(just one year after being blessed with the FED and IRS) the National Education Association released this statement

“We view with alarm the activities of Carnagie and Rockefeller foundations, agencies in no way responsible to the people(today = NGOs),
in their efforts to control the policies of our state institutions,
to fashion after their conception,
and to standardize(that’s what globalism/communism is actually all about in all domains)our courses of study

Frank:
The 1910 Flexner Report was a much needed kick-in-the-pants to modernize US medical schools, which at the time many were haphazard commercial enterprises of wildly divergent academic value. IMO Flexner was a net plus.
But, recently [past 2 decades?] most med schools, as in most of academia, have become over run with “wokeness” [social justice, diversity, inclusion & equity etc.], gender affirming care for children along with “sex is a spectrum”, and the oppressor/oppressed memes. All to the detriment of patients and the medical profession.

Every major AI breakthrough depends on computing power.

In the 90s Intel believed increasing processor speed was the key to faster computing power but AMD understood that efficiency for multiple instructions per clock cycle was more scalable.

Right now the belief is that larger data centres are required but at some point people will realise that more efficient processing is the path forward. A human brain runs on about 20W and there are much more efficient mechanisms, such as computing in memory, to train AI models than the brute force way we do it today.

Exactly! And ‘myuser’ should note that none of the big dogs of AI data centers are investing in wind or solar electricity production for their behind-the-meter energy needs. Only reliable, dispatchable sources: natgas & nukes; maybe in near future even a coal plant?
[I seem to recall one AI outfit bought a wind/solar farm but only because it was already tied to the grid so they could add gas turbines without going through the regulatory hurdles (that might take years)]

The US Army plans to install 20 SMRs at 5 major posts around the country, to make sure they have adequate power. I assume they also see the problem.

What was the problem again?

I read two articles this week about Data Centers in my State and both of them committed to building their own power plants and to pay for any and all additional infrastructure required.

President Trump has gotten agreement from the AI promoters to supply their own power so as not to increase local customers bills.

The water issue is easily solved.

The location issue is easily solved. I have two Data Centers located in my area, one about five miles away and one about 10 miles away. They don’t cause me any problems.

So, what was the problem with AI Data Centers again? Chinese propaganda and disinformation? I hear they have a Bot Farm dedicated to it, trying to dupe poor, unsuspecting Americans about AI.

Three observations from someone who has ‘been there and done that’ during previous ‘IT’ iterations of what is now known as the AI buzz.

  1. AI resource needs will rapidly evolve technically to ‘less is more’, as what is now anticipated using current technology simply isn’t sufficiently scalable.
  2. AI is by far not a leading national competitiveness issue. Look at how China built a commanding lead in crucial rare earths while the US slept.
  3. Global competitiveness is very multidimensional. Never as simple as here posited. I give one memorable example from the Japanese motorcycle trade war on Harley Davidson circa 1977 (I was then a junior foot soldier on Harley’s side). Went to Japan for a month to understand the competition. Three memorable lessons. First, their manufacturing quality was far superior. If Harley didn’t fix that, it had no hope. Second, they really were serious. One example. I was granted an interview with Honda senior MC executives, and was allowed to ask ten questions submitted in advance. For the first, my Japanese translator was admonished—that is not exactly what was submitted in English. Let’s go to number two. Third, the whole country supported their MC export industry push. At that time, no Japanese manufacturer made a motorcycle bigger than 750cc. Harley made none less than 750cc. So Japan passed a motorcycle license law requiring that an applicant be able to pick up and remount a spilled motorcycle. Of course, most short stature Japanese could not pick up and remount a spilled big heavy Harley, effectively protecting the Japanese market thru non-tariff discrimination. That fact helped me get Harley five years of Section 301 relief, during which they fixed their manufacturing quality problems.

A major competitive advantage goes to companies that are willing to improve.
W. Edwards Deming was laughed out of U.S. auto manufacturing companies for promoting SPC standards. Management stated that Americans will stick with U.S. brands and the extra cost was not warranted. That mindset didn’t work out well.

I heard a story that Harley’s quality problems were made vividly apparent when they started to test for emissions. They discovered that their bikes needed a complete engine overhaul after only a few thousand miles of running.

The way I see it, the datacenter build out will self regulate. A large portion of the companies pushing for development will fail because they are short-sighted. They are trying to place datacenters in poor locations because the land is cheaper. I believe optional siting would be in an industrial area that has access to water and power with higher noise permissions like around airports. The real estate cost is higher initially but, local communities would be more likely to embrace the development.

Straight-line projections by the IEA are just that. SLMs run locally on laptops and mobile phones will turn the LLM-data center model on its head. We probably already have too many data centers relative to future demand.

I’ve been noticing for decades that the ability for the USA to do “big things” has deteriorated. The current poster child is the California high-speed rail boondoggle. But other major projects such as bridges or highways always have cost overruns and take much longer to complete than planned. Military projects are an area I tend to follow and the F-35 and Littoral Combat Ships are examples of long lead times, costs and limited capability. It almost impossible to complete a nuclear power plant in the USA and when it does happen it’s billions upon billions of dollars to completion.

Contrast this to events several decades in the past or going back to the early 1900s. Imagine the US of today trying to build capacity for armaments like in WWII or Hoover Dam, or something really big like the Panama Canal.

Trump is trying to rebuild the U.S. industrial base.

That is one reason he imposes tariffs, to incentivize manufacturers to move their manufacturing facility to the U.S. to avoid the tariffs.

The push for “data centers” all across the horizon, seems a bit like the auto industry from Ford’s first assembly line up until the Depression/WWII. There were thousands of new automobile and component businesses sprouting up across the landscape. Unfortunately, most of them either quickly failed, or slowly died away if not absorbed by the big guys.
The question to me is, ” will the “data centers” suffer the same fate?” Will there be a handful of highly successful mega operations providing most of the AI the world needs, or will there continue to be uncountable smaller, less efficient operations scattered everywhere? History would indicate the former.

No, they do not depend on abundant, reliable electricity. They depend on just enough reliable electricity to run them, neither more nor less, and cooling the same. Some places have those capabilities, some do not, and some could build them. Loudoun County Virginia, for example, is doing quite well with ~250 data centers while getting about half of the County’s income from them. Other counties could do the same but for the hysterical, thoughtless objections created in ignorant minds and transmitted to you quickly and without cost to you by the web.

The datacenter is just one aspect of the ecosystem. Every industrial and personal endeavor depends on abundant, reliable electricity.
Just like you want the lights to go on when you flip the switch, a manufacturer likes their production lines to run when they hit the green button.
As long as the hype for datacenter build out is high, we might as well have the developers build out the power and water infrastucture.

A tool, yes. Better? Perhaps, maybe so.
The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything is 42.
Can any of these AI/Data Centers compute the question? Highly unlikely.

We often hear the old saw about “We have the best Government money can buy, and ours is bought and paid for. A recent discussion with Alter.AI reinforced this, particularly in the area of competitiveness.

I was asking about the fact that regulations appear to be the main restriction to re-developing the US nuclear power industry, and AI agreed. But it was Worse. We settled on greed and corruption as the main issue. like in the case of the Vogtle Power plant that bankrupted the great Westinghouse company.

As a Registered Professional Engineer, I am very familiar with the FEED (FEEED) front end engineering and design effort for a project, AI and I settled on the biggest problem in American competitiveness being the fact that to please the Governor of the state of the proposed project, the management for the planning of any major project choses an EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Design) firm with ties to his major donors. It escalates from there, with the brother of (say, the Attorney General) chosen to work on the eventual project bankruptcy. In between there are Connected construction contractors, suppliers who “know someone,” and any number of people who profit from Change Orders, RAI’s (regulatory delays caused by Requests For Additional Information) and other delaying tactics.

Everything but an effort to provide industry and the population with quick, cheap electrical energy. I have seen the same good-ole-boy networking sabotage or extend and delay and over-budget numerous other projects. Capitalism has been changed from a system to maximize the efficient utilization of resources to game of “make the right people rich.”

We need to change this, even if it amounts to the GOP admitting its complicity.

While I am on board with this guy I view it differently. I don’t see it so much as a competitive problem we can compete with the best of them. Our problem is that our penchant for preserving and exercising our freedom has sometimes enabled even encouraged some to interfere with legal business practices and projects through the court system. Small minorities backed by very wealthy foundations have succeeded in blocking needed and worthwhile projects via sympathetic judges. This is a mistake and an abuse of an otherwise decent judicial system.
