Europe’s Worst Drought and Heatwave Ever

The media is full of news about the current drought and heatwave in Europe. “Unprecedented” (they love that word), “worst ever“, and so on and endlessly so on.

Europe’s unprecedented early summer heatwave may be responsible for hundreds of excess deaths, according to the head of the World Health Organization (WHO).”BBC

European heatwave is worst ever and impossible without climate crisis, scientists say” – Guardian headline. It goes on to say “The heatwave scorching western Europe is the most severe and widespread ever and is only possible due to the climate crisis driven by fossil fuel burning, scientists have said.“.

Europe’s heatwave is the hottest and most humid ever” – New Scientist article headline (paywalled).

As usual, the media rush to panic the public and are careful not to look for any information that might spoil their story of existential calamity (if it bleeds, it leads).

So – what does history say? I didn’t have to wait long for the answer, thanks to today’s AI-based search engines: 15 seconds.  In 2014, Wetter et al published a paper: The year-long unprecedented European heat and drought of 1540 – a worst case. Admittedly the paper was comparing the megadrought of 1540 with the European and Russian droughts of 2003 and 2010, but it is hard to believe from their description that the current European drought is any worse. It is also very hard to believe that the current European drought is so much worse than the 1540 megadrought that it is evidence of a man-made existential threat. And it is extremely hard to believe that any media outlet has carefully checked the reported 1540 heat and drought against the 2026 heat and drought to make sure that their use of “unprecedented”, “worst ever” etc is accurate.

Wetter et al (2014) is pay-walled by Springer, so I can only quote from the Abstract. OK, it’s not all that long – here is the whole Abstract:

The heat waves of 2003 in Western Europe and 2010 in Russia, commonly labelled as rare climatic anomalies outside of previous experience, are often taken as harbingers of more frequent extremes in the global warming-influenced future. However, a recent reconstruction of spring–summer temperatures for WE resulted in the likelihood of significantly higher temperatures in 1540. In order to check the plausibility of this result we investigated the severity of the 1540 drought by putting forward the argument of the known soil desiccation-temperature feedback. Based on more than 300 first-hand documentary weather report sources originating from an area of 2 to 3 million km2, we show that Europe was affected by an unprecedented 11-month-long Megadrought. The estimated number of precipitation days and precipitation amount for Central and Western Europe in 1540 is significantly lower than the 100-year minima of the instrumental measurement period for spring, summer and autumn. This result is supported by independent documentary evidence about extremely low river flows and Europe-wide wild-, forest- and settlement fires. We found that an event of this severity cannot be simulated by state-of-the-art climate models.

Implicit confirmation of Wetter et al’s findings comes from a perhaps unexpected source – a published criticism of the paper. Alongside the paper are an Erratum and a Commentary. The Erratum is just minor corrections to author details.  The Commentary, though, criticises the paper for not citing an earlier proxy study that identified low precipitation amounts in 1540: “[Wetter et al]‘s conclusion regarding the inability of natural proxy archives to record climate extremes is not defensible“. My thinking is that if they thought the main thrust of the paper was wrong, they would have said so, but all they could claim was that the authors missed a proxy study that confirmed it.

The situation in Europe is pretty bad, and I am sure I speak for everyone in wishing Europe well in what are very challenging conditions. But that is where the climate narrative today is so damaging. Instead of addressing weather/climate rationally, everything bad is blamed on fossil fuels so that politicians continually make bad decisions and resources are diverted away from where they are really needed. As always, climate change alarmism is more damaging than global warming.

You make two very good points worth emphasizing here.

Most important, in today’s AI era ignored or even suppressed ‘facts’ are easy to find and then deploy against those who don’t even try. Your example is the 1540 European drought. As another recent example of this ‘truth’, my comment to the recent ‘endangered potatoes’ post. I already knew the answer to #s 1 and 2, but the rest took about 30 seconds. The India all south of Ukraine also took a simple query reformulation for precise ‘latitude range’ from imprecise ‘latitude’.

Second, one has to read everything very carefully and with sufficient background knowledge—which can be acquired easily via the main point. Here, a paper criticism becomes an implicit conclusion confirmation. My own favorite example is Dessler 2010b, a paper where he concluded by comparing CERES clear sky to all sky that cloud feedback was significantly positive—a finding NASA then amplified. In fact, his key comparison chart was almost a perfect scattergram with an OLS r*2 of 0.02! Statistically proving the opposite of his academic conclusion.

I always happy to read more people pointing out inconsistencies with uncertainty!
Dessler is also the lead scientist “proofing” by simulation that the Hunga-Tongo eruption did not cause any significant tropospheric warming, but “forgetting” to point out the many stratospheric changes caused by the volcano that are not considered in this models, not even as potential uncertainty.

There is a mega drought in the US Southwest. Lake Mead is at 23% capacity and falling. This is really serious. The Colorado River Basin supplies water and electricity to about 40 million people and water for agriculture. Hopefully the big El Nino will bring some relief to the region. If there was ever an example of the effects of regional climate change, this is it. The last mega drought was about 1,200 years ago.

False. Lake Mead and Powell water levels are rising year over year since a low in 2022. Every day Hoover and Glen Canyon dams open their sluice gates to generate electricity to feed Southern California and Nevada with cheap, “renewable” power in order to greenwash the total loss from wind and solar.
The reservoirs in the entire Colorado basin could be filled in a short time by reducing electrical generation. They are drained by electrical grid support policy, not by nature or climate change

Hydroelectric production remains consistent regardless of lake level or head pressure.

The normal variation of weather has followed the last three years of increasing precipitation, and this year we’ve enjoyed restoration of our summer monsoon.

Deliberately misleading, false and hysterical claims like Pierce’s are part of the climate cult’s steady propaganda, and should be ignored.

DK has to learn how to read charts as the two lake levels are currently at the lowest levels in the past 5 years, not “rising year over year since a low in 2022.”.

He needs to understand that hydropower is mostly a non-consumptive use—meaning water passes through the turbines to generate power, but it is not physically consumed or removed from the river channel.

All water used for hydro, is then piped elsewhere. Of the roughly 15 million acre-feet ) of water allocated annually from the Colorado River, 20% is split between municipal use and reservoir evaporation. Forage Crops (55%) goes toward growing food for livestock. Alfalfa and hay are the largest consumers, heavily driven by the beef and dairy industries. The other 25% is for Vegetables.

As you say, water from one place flows to another. Pierce’s hysteria is based on Mead water levels. Mead is filled from Powell. Powell is about equal to 2022 August low, after three years of much higher summer levels. The chart for Mead says “Pct of Capacity: 26.78%, 188.76 ft below Full Pool (1229′), and down 14.09 ft from a year ago” It also shows this is normal for August.

Note that in 2022 Powell and Mead were as low or slightly lower in August, and daily electrical generation continued.

Mead and Powell water levels are ruled by hydroelectric generation which remains the same to support California and Nevada baseload.
Rain and snow is increasing year over year. Increases in flash flooding throughout the desert southwest – currently in my part of Southern Arizona, are higher than the last five years. Winter snow pack is increasing throughout the Colorado basin.

Central Arizona and Southern California get drinking and agricultural water from Havasu and taps off just to the North. It is about average over the past 5 years, but stocked from release electrical generation release from Powell and Mead. While there is a lot of variation in weekly lake levels, drinking water supply is still well stocked – and not at all what Pierce claimed was a megadrought.

The hysterical complaint was that Mead was at 23%, this is a couple points off, but it is a dynamic number based on release from Powell. To fix it, simply black out California for a week, let it fill from the Colorado and other sources, and let Arizona and Nevada enjoy our nuclear and coal supplied baseload. This should stop Pierce’s hysterics, or pull his cord.

Added: We’ll see, anyway. Probably this week if inflow to Powell doesn’t make up for the mismanagement of water for eletrical generation, the generators will stop, at Glen Canyon, then perhaps at Hoover. Havasu will remain at usable levels for drinking water, but So. California could get black outs.
But it will be mismanagement and variations in weather, and not climate change.

Inflows to Lake Mead are very low right now. Due to a weak winter snowpack and a long-term regional drought, updates from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation show that inflows are well below normal, pushing the lake’s total capacity down to about 27% and causing water levels to hit historic lows.

The 2025–2026 winter snowpack was the worst on record for the Colorado River Basin.   Arizona, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Nevada, Idaho, and Wyoming all recorded their lowest April 1 Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) since satellite monitoring began in the 1980s.

You still do not get that electrical generation has no impact to overall lake storage levels. You can not just shut off electrical generation and refill the two reservoirs. That water you want to shut off for hydro goes to California, Arizona, and Nevada to support cities and farms water usage. Unless you just want to shut them off also, your plan does not make sense.

Can the climate experts explain why extrapolating weather conditions from an area this size to the whole earth will give a reliable guide for climate predictions? I have Ventusky on my PC and have noticed over the past two months their fortnightly forecasts of rain for Dublin have been regularly incorrect. Their forecasts of rain disappear with the morning dew as it warms up each day.

Color me skeptical when it comes to these claims.

ignoring the fact that Greenland used to be green back then, that China was way warmer

Here in the UK the last major reservoir built was at Carsingham in Derbyshire. It opened in 1991.

A reservoir is currently being built at Havant thicket in Hampshire and is due to be completed by 2029.

The population of the UK was 57.3m in 1991. In July 2026 it was 69,3m

Is there a chance that this is simply because we now have 8 billion people (compared with around 300 million in 1500), all using more water, with many having access to technology? There are also far more people who can not only record increasingly frequent droughts, but do so across a much wider area than was possible in 1500.

Perhaps these climate ‘advisors’, not scientists, as they definitely are not, could explain what the meaning of the inscriptions found on the hunger stones mean? “if you ever find and read this stone, may god help you”. These stones of course are being found at the bottom of todays drought dried river beds throughout Europe. The oldest readable stone was carved in 1616 the rest span over 4 centuries.(for the advisors, that’s 400 years + of serious drought). Stop blaming climate change and start screaming at the politicians to get reservoirs and water purifiers built. The writing is on the, in this case, rock. Heed the words. Todays politicians want a place in history? They will get one.
Absolutely nothing is happening that Sol has not seen before.

Everything suggests that the drought and temperatures of 1540 were absolutely terrifying. One could argue that contemporary events are admittedly less spectacular (it’s not difficult to do better than an eleven-month drought!) but more frequent and earlier. I would respond that, while consulting historical archives can provide us with valuable information about exceptional weather events, they are also highly selective, insofar as, for an event to be recorded, it must have had a significant impact on agriculture, populations, livestock, etc. Much less intense events than the 1540 drought may have occurred without being recorded, because their impacts were not significant enough.

Today, we observe the world from every angle: weather stations, ocean buoys, satellites… Not only is the resolution of the data available to us—from less than two centuries ago (weather stations), to a few decades ago (satellites), to not even thirty years ago (ARGO floats)—incomparable to what can be inferred from proxy-based reconstructions, but the “memory resolution” (the quality of the information we can extract from cross-referenced archives dating back several centuries) must also be taken into account for the reasons mentioned above.
I would tend to stick to several points:

— These intense and closely spaced heat episodes in Europe are probably partly attributable to the colossal decline in atmospheric pollution from sulfur aerosols following the collapse of the USSR and its industries, as well as subsequent initiatives by Western European countries to “clean up” their own emissions, which has the effect of reducing cloud cover and therefore increasing sunshine and, inevitably, producing more warming;

— Urbanization and land use are extremely important factors that have a major influence on local temperatures;

— Obvious lessons could have been learned as early as the 2003 European heatwave; if we had equipped ourselves accordingly (air conditioning), all these deaths in 2026 could have been avoided. But the environmentalists said: repentance and degrowth. If we’re going to go down a religious rabbit hole anyway, we probably would have been cooler within the stone walls of an abbey!

I love this joke. I’ve already read/heard it quite a few times. Not politically correct, obviously. But nothing that is politically correct is funny, and nothing is funny without some basis in reality. And France is right in the thick of it. In Strasbourg (whose Gothic cathedral is an incredible masterpiece), a mosque project is under construction: the largest in Europe! 16,000 square meters when the work is completed. What a source of pride! That’s what I would say if my brain had been washed by left-wing political correctness.

It is hard to get, but if you search you can find pieces of information, try to find graphs how air is pushed up above wind turbines, like over mountains, which causes decrease of temperature, and try to find how air is cooled coming through wind turbine.
What can you find easily is pictures of the fog created behind wind turbines, for that conditions must be just right, that this rather small temperature drop goes under dew point and causes precipitation directly.
But all this is happening also further downwind. It is simple law of conserving energy.

The history of major European droughts truly begins at the end of the 13th century with a period of major climatic transition. A study published in 2020 in the journal Climate of the Past demonstrates that a multiseason drought lasting nearly two years occurred in the Mediterranean between 1302 and 1304, followed by a series of hot and dry summers north of the Alps until 1306. A stable high-pressure system explains this extreme drought, unique to the 13th and 14th centuries, which was correlated with major urban fires, such as the one in Florence in June 1304, when more than 1,700 houses burned down. These events constituted the prelude to what researchers call the “Dantean Anomaly” (1309–1321), a transitional phase between the Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age.

It is crucial to note that the Great Famine of 1315–1321, often confused with a drought, was in fact caused by its exact opposite: incessant torrential rainfall, saturated soils, and prolonged flooding, with the growing seasons preceding the famine years being among the wettest in all of Europe between 1300 and 2012.

In the 14th century, climate variability remained extreme. Between the major episodes mentioned above, French chronicles record other notable droughts, such as that of 1331, when the ground became so hard that it could not be ploughed, or that of the summer of 1334, followed by a very wet winter. The years 1384 and 1392 marked critical points when springs dried up and France’s largest rivers became unnavigable. Toward the end of the century, in 1473, Europe faced what was probably the most widespread and extreme period of heat and drought of the last millennium. This heatwave and drought lasted fourteen months, affecting Western, Central, and Eastern Europe, as well as southern Scandinavia and Ireland. Reports describe four to five months without significant precipitation, and in Dijon, the grape harvest took place as early as August 20. The heat continued from June until December 1, with no cold weather before Candlemas, to the point that a Belgian chronicler described the event as an “unprecedented and abnormal drought that afflicted the entire world.”

The 16th century offers one of the most striking examples of climate variability with the drought of 1540, often described as the “megadrought of the millennium.” This extreme meteorological event, lasting eleven months, created conditions conducive to forest fires and caused rivers to dry up, reducing Lake Constance to a mere puddle. Temperature estimates based on proxy reconstructions (which are known to require considerable caution and should not be treated as indisputable truths, as the MSM often does) suggest that temperatures at the time exceeded 20th-century normal values by 5 to 7 °C, with summers sometimes exceeding 40 °C. The drought began in northern Italy, where there was no rain for nearly 200 consecutive days, and then spread to Germany, Poland, Switzerland, France, and Bohemia. The Rhine, Elbe, and Seine dried up to such an extent that they could be crossed on foot, while the tide in the Thames pushed seawater inland, reversing the direction of the current. In Switzerland, not a single drop of rain fell from March to December, and the Rhine Falls fell silent.

These dramatic events left physical and cultural traces, notably the famous “hunger stones,” or Hungersteine. These rocks deserve particular mention because they constitute striking climate archives carved directly into riverbeds. A hunger stone is a large engraved stone located in the bed of a watercourse, visible only when the water level is very low. This type of hydrological marker is found in Central Europe, particularly along the Elbe in Germany and the Czech Republic, and constitutes a monument commemorating and foretelling the famines brought about by major droughts. Around twenty of these blocks, bearing dates going back to the 15th century, remain along the banks of the Elbe. The oldest inscriptions mention the years 1417, 1473, 1616, 1654, and 1666. The most famous is the one at Děčín in Bohemia, engraved in 1616, which bears the phrase: “If you see me, then weep.” These stones served as warnings to future generations about the collapse of agricultural production.

Beyond these major episodes, European history is dotted with other severe droughts. The 16th century thus saw the summer of 1536 become scorching and extremely dry, with an early grape harvest, and the year 1553, when the heat scorched everything as early as June. The 17th century was marked by the drought of 1632, which lasted from July 12 to September 15, as well as by severe episodes in 1674 and 1684. The years 1705 to 1719 formed a particularly dramatic period, with two successive heatwave summers in 1718 and 1719 in the Paris region, accompanied by swarms of locusts devastating crops as far as Normandy. These two summers caused 700,000 deaths, including 450,000 in 1719 alone, with the victims being primarily infants and children suffering from dysentery. Between 1684 and 1719, a veritable succession of extremely severe droughts affected Paris and Languedoc. In 1726, 1729, and 1731, generally dry years affected the whole of France, and in 1785, a major drought struck Spain, Sicily, and France, coinciding with the eruption of the Icelandic volcano Laki.

In the 19th century, the 1811 drought in Nancy was characterized by intense heat from March to August, and then again until October, depleting springs and streams. The drought of 1817 followed in the wake of the 1815 eruption of Tambora, which caused the “year without a summer” in 1816 and widespread famine. The years 1830, 1842, 1858, 1868, 1875, and 1892–1893 complete the list of major 19th-century droughts documented by the Elbe hunger stones and French climatological archives.

Hi there.. I might sound like a broken record, but any time someone blames antropogenic CO2 for something, I feel the need to express that they can only do so by ignorance..

In this case about the very real and measured effects of the Hunga-Tongo eruption in 2022 increasing the stratospheric water content by about 10%.
There is good measured evidence that much of that water is still present and changed stratospheric currents, affecting both polar vortices and Stratosphere-Troposphere interactions.
This could very well affect European heat waves and clouds, which in turn might have effect on the Pacific and El Nino formation.

Unless that is disproven by facts and not opinions dressing up as models, the reasons for anything in the atmosphere remain basically uncertain..

One reason why the nice summer weather in Europe gets so much traction in the papers is the widespread forest fires raging all over the place. The French firefighting authorities state that (at least) 90% of those in France had human action as cause, through carelessness and deliberately through arson. There have been some 300 people arrested.
In fact, of all the wild fires reported worldwide, only one, in Canada, is reported to have started with an observed natural event, a lightning strike.

I’m in the red zone. This year I have most and best fruits in last 4 years. Plums, Peaches, Cherries, Figs, Currants, Strawberries…
And Grape is best I had in 23 years I’m living in my house.
Yes it was really hot, my last record was 40,3C, this year 42,2C.
As bonus, I don’t need to mow my lawn.

I counted and I found, that typical wind turbine will cool downstream air by 0.05-0,07C. That means earlier condensation of held moisture, which will condense earlier in downstream air. In Europe almost all moisture is coming from West and North West from Atlantic Ocean. By putting around 107 000 wind turbines, mostly on West and North West Europe coast, there is artificial mountain range built, which is stripping moisture from air getting inland.
So far I did not find any attempt to seriously calculate this impact, how much less of water Europe is getting because of wind mills.
And question is not if it is getting less water, but how much less water.

I’m living in rain shadow of hills. They have height around 300m above my level, they are located around 20km from me to west, but this is enough to make my place driest in country.
So what is impact of 300m high wind turbine park?

The WV is not extracted. It does not rain or deposit dew. The WV remains. What is happening is that the lower boundary zone air is mixed by the turbine blades, so that on hot days cooler air above is mixed down to the surface (hence cooler). However at night warmer air above (if a radiation type night) is mixed down from above the inversion making the surface a little warmer. Both are a fairly local effect and very small.

I disagree. We have conservation of energy law. If you take some energy from air, it gets colder, or it is precipitated as some moisture. Simple as that.
It is same law, when you look on solar panels with infra and see that working panels are colder than those which are idle. If you take this 20% of energy in form of electricity from light, it will not convert to heat.

That’s true …… for a closed system (ie adiabatic).
This situation does not lie in a contained “box” however.
Air entrained by the turbine rotors came from outside – air of a different temperature/humidity.
The effect is simply a diabatic* effect……

*an adjective used in physics, thermodynamics, and meteorology that means involving a transfer or exchange of heat between a system and its surroundings

BTW: if what you say were true then air would cool at night as well. It doesn’t; it warms. (IE: a +ve LR is much more likely overnight under surface radiative cooling.

So basically you are saying that turbine in enclosed pipe blowing air will not turn, because there is no thermal layered profile so you will not get any energy from blowed air…

Here in the UK we are enjoying the second hot summer in a row. This is unprecedented…apparently. Needless to say the previous fixation we had regarding the weather has now been repurposed into a fixation with Climate?
Clearly the solution (no pun intended) to this endless dry spell would be to appoint a minister for drought. The last time this was done was in 1976 when a chap called Dennis Howel was appointed at the end of August and the following day it started to rain. It continued raining through till Christmas with all the reservoirs that were supposed to take years to recover from the drought overflowing and threatening floods…
So the moral of the tale is appoint a minister and watch the rains fall. I even have an ideal candidate for the job, someone with well documented evidence/experience of promoting rain. Past PM Rishi Sunak would be perfect for the job, raining on his parade is normal.

There’s a lot of news items in the UK about the low levels of European Rivers particularly the Danube. German WW2 motorcycle and a Wooly Mammoth the latest discoveries. No mention of all the modifications to flow and extraction in the late 20th century it’s all down to climate change.

In England , we had a very wet summer in 2014, large parts of Somerset were severely flooded. I remember in July travelling from Southampton to Dartmouth and having to turn back because flood waters closed the road which was unheard of in Summer . Needless to say climate change got the blame for it.

When dams are removed and no new reservoirs built in order to protect habitat, etc, when uncontrolled immigration increases populations by millions each year and thus increases demand for water, water shortages are inevitable.

Added to this farmers on the Continent in France, Spain have been encouraged – subsidised – to grow crops like avocado, kiwi fruit all of which require large amounts of water. This is to cut down on carbon emissions from shipping them in from where they grow naturally and abundantly.
